McNeely is a man who has recognized this day as a time for action. Returning to Biola in January '69 after a three year absence of service as Chaplain in the Naval Reserves, Dr. McNeely has again become a vital part of the Biola faculty. His concern for Biola stu- dents is readily evident in his chapel sessions as well as in his own classes. His spiritual guidance and instruction are invaluable and have been given always in the spirit of love. It is this concern and love which has made Dr. McNeely a real friend and advisor to Biola students. Moving from Goodland, Kansas at eight years of age, Dr. McNeely came with his family to Long Beach, Cali- fornia, where he later graduated from Long Beach Poly High School. Soon after graduating from Westmont Col- lege, Dr. McNeely married Jean Paton Graham. The McNeelys then moved to Dallas, Texas, where he con- tinued his studies at Dallas Theological Seminary. After several moves involving work as a youth pastor and teaching at the Mid-West Bible Institute, Dr. McNeely, his wife, and their children, Dennis, Kathy, and Mike, came to Long Beach. In 1959 he began teaching at Biola as Assistant Professor of Bible, receiving his doctorate from Dallas Theological Seminary four years later. After serving as Chaplain under Destroyer Squadron 21, Dr. McNeely returned to Biola. There is much evidence of Dr. McNeely's true concern about young people today other than his teaching and guidance at Biola. Last summer, Dr. McNeely spent twelve days traveling over 3000 miles on bus as camp speaker for Summer Travel Camp '69. The camping idea was totally new and involved about forty teenagers from three Orange County churches. As Dr. McNeely took the campers through the Book of Acts, their lives were found- ed more deeply in Christ. With Dr. Mac's guidance, the campers not only studied Acts, but also discussed such subjects as Knowing God's Will for My Life, methods of witnessing, and various other religious beliefs, all accord- ing to what God's Word says concerning each topic. After camp was over, Dr. McNeely opened up his home for a reunion of the campers where they could discuss their growth and experiences together. This year Dr. McNeely is advisor to Sigma Tau Chi, a newly-founded service club for veterans in school. His firsthand knowledge of life in the armed forces makes this position all the more appreciated by club members. It is this deep caring and involvement with young peo- ple which lias made Dr. Richard McNeely a man of the times, a man of action. The B team placed first in its division, and the A team brought home second place honors. The A team was defeated by La Verne whom they later defeated twice. In regular season play the A team did not lose a match. They successfully defeated Cal Lutheran. Pomona, Whittier, La Verne, Wfestmont, and Occidental. The A team's unde- feated season left them in first place in their leagueg E.C.C.S.C.C. This first place finish en- titled the women to play in a post-season tourna- ment against the I5 learns of larger schools. Both A and B teams at Biola are young and looking forward to another successful season next year. Players on the A team include Becky Graves, Sharon Haag, Flo Eheling, Terry Williams, Susie Moyens. First of all, they aimed to develop meaningful friend- ships with each other and thus en- able the strengthening of their Christian lives through the help of their friends. The second goal was to reach out into areas which are often neglected. The activities for the year included weekly meetings and share times, weekly visits to a nearby convales- cent hospital, contributions to a needy family at Christmas time, do- nations and a musical program for a children's home, weekend retreat, participation in homecoming, and several other small projects and parties. The club was established for the purpose of fulfilling a need for stronger Christian fellowship and definite outreach. It has seen the beginning of this fulfillment. The ultimate goal of the club was to be everlastingly effec- tive in the service for Christ by soliciting, encouraging, and snatching from the very flames whomsoever the Lord has call- ed for active duty in His army as His Ambassadors. A secon- dary goal of the club was to provide fellowship, encourage- ment, opportunity for spiritual growth and a bond of love for its members, those to whom its message is directed, and the world we live in. The gospel team informed Christians throughout the Los Angeles area of the universal Christ and His work in the universe. The team, and club, also visited non-Christian internationals and testified to them of the love of Jesus. One of thc events that marked the success of the club was the International Banquet, featuring Bill Bright, to over 800 participants. The club's outreach successes amounted to what they did only because of God's goodness. Realizing this, club members consistently attended the Bible and pray- er sessions beseeching God for His guid- ance. Club socials, ranging from an interna- tional costume party to a beach party, evidenced the club as a spiritual and social unit. Thus, it was a Year of New Beginnings, slated towards and promis- ing a bright future! F Debate Team Communicates Current Issues Spry practices his speech before the Debate Team. Recognizing that according to I Corinthians 6:20, we should use every part of our bodies to give glory to God, the women of Biola were presented with activities that would be recreationally relaxing and physically re- warding. Every Thursday evening the Biola gym- nasium saw women participating in vol- leyball, basketball, tumbling and gymnas- tics, or badminton. Other features on the WRA calendar were Christmas carolling and the party at Dr. Sutherland's home, the annual Alumni Basketball game, the Second Annual Easter Egg Hunt, and the Spring Awards Banquet. After a very bad start, the Biolans played better ball toward the end of the season where there was an ac- cumulation of home games. Biola beat Stanislaus State 88-83, lost to Azusa Pacific 110-75, edged Cal Baptist 68-66, beat Cal Lutheran Qfor only the second time in Biola historyj 71-62, defeated La Verne 98-89 and gave Westmont a real scare at Biola before losing 80-69. Sharon Haag and Karen Larsen pro- vided bench strength. The team began their season by wallop- ing U. C. Riverside 64-25. There is a great deal of activism which merely spins wheels, characterizing revolt against everything and everybody with no constructive program of its own. Too many young people are willing to tear down but offer no evidence of programs for rebuilding. Action or activism has characterized this year, 1969-70, at Biola. Great ac- tivity in the life of the student body has been obvious, reaching out more personal- ly to touch the lives of young and old alike. It is refreshing to note activism on the part of Christian young people mani- festing itself in a far different but more effective manner-the sincere desire to implement the things they believe and put into practice these beliefs in their daily lives. This is activism with a purpose- a goal! The Christian Service outreach of Biola has extended far and wide with appreciably greater effectiveness than ever before. VVe are assured the work which you as seniors began and worked so diligently for will be sustained. Your zeal and testimony as Christian leaders and upperclassmen have spurred your colleagues to bigger and better things for the Lord. We believe that time is short, the re- turn of the Lord is near. Times like these- is time for actionl' because . . . the day is far spent, the night is at hand when no man can workfl As the AL lengthening shadows deepen, we must work extra hard to get the job done ,ere the Lord returns. May the Lord's mighty hand be upon each of you in years to come as you find His special area of service for your life. Cordially yours in Christ, S. H. Sutherland, President ni t A .. .'.-. . -. This fact became especially evident as the staff tried to capture most of it with a few pictures and a little ink. All of the excitement and enthusiasm of one year ago turned to frenzy and inevitable disappointments as the year progressed, but now all that is left is a warm, quiet feeling and a book full of pictures and memories. A well-earned thank you to the entire 'fcrew who had a part in the production of this book. And a special thanks to: Peggy Sanders-for doing my dirty work and putting up with me as my Associate Editorg Robert Flynt and John Dudeck-for thousands of pictures and much patienceg Mark Mosier-for being my trusty Business Manager and faithful encouragerg The Chimes-for use of photographers, photos and paper cutterg Rand Bates-for seal on page lg Frank Zamora-for much advice, cover design and division pagesg Jerry Pevehouse-for senior portraits and color on page 25 Hubbell Publishing Co.-for much encouragement and Fine serviceg Nancy, Jeri, Sandy, Jerry, the C.E. Bunch and all the rest who kept me from losing my mind! The 1970 BIOLAN is an achievement - to be liked by some, not so liked by others. But either wayfthis book will always stand in my mind as a proof of the never-ending grace and power of God.
