SUNY Binghamton 1978 Excellence at a Moderate Cost: As a parl of the State University of New York sys- tem, SUNY Binghamton can maintain in- tellectual excellence while keeping tui- tion in the moderate range. The Univer- sity's strong teaching staff a faculty as remarkable as that at some prestigious private schools contributes to the high admissions standards. In a recent year, nearly 78 of the entering freshman rank- ed in the top 109 of their high school graduating classes. i H' T - . . - I F - i Reprinted from the Profile in-Depth on SUNY Binghamton Barron's Educational Series, Inc,, 1975, 1974, 1972 by permission of the publisher $150.4 e b Dear ones, never blame anyone or anything. I imagine you'll make numerous dis- coveries aboul yourselves after you leave this University. Sure to be among those discoveries is the feeling that your years here were a priceless in- vestment, the building of a solid foun- dation for your lives. Another discovery you'll make will be of the new relationship you'll have with SUNY-Bighamton as an alumnus. With your degree, you become our representative to the world at large, and a testament to the quality and vitality of this University, In addition, I think you'll find, your future concerns as graduates will be an outgrowth of those you had as a stu- dent: a mix of personal achievement and a desire to improve the commu- nity and society in which we live. I hope you look forward to a lifetime of learning, for which your experience at SUNY-Binghamton was a beginning. My best wishes to the class of 78 for successful, satisfying lives. Clifford D. Bartle, the found- ing president and guiding hand of Harpur Col- lege. A man of great dedication to the principle of public higher education and a tireless worker where the insitution was concerned, he com- bined many rare qualities as a scientist and a humanist. He never lost sight of his goal of building a unique liberal arts college of high standards with a superior faculty. Concern for the local community was foremost in his thinking as he moved the college from the small private sector into the State System. His interest and involvement with the college did not cease afler his retirement, and his gifts of wisdom and hu- mor were greatly appreciated by his successors. The vision and foresight of Glenn G. Bartle are embodied in the contemporary success of SUNY- Binghamton and its educational mission. Clifford D. Clark President SUNYBinghamton Q 71v D . T T I Ry - SOCCER Injuries Keep Colonials Out of Playoffs The SUNY-Binghamton soccer team struggled to a 8 I record this past fall, failing to enter a post-season tournament for the first time in the last six years. The team was plagued by an inconsistent offense and a defense that surrendered goals at inopportune mo- ments in key matches, Injuries that rendered some key players inoperable for all or significant parts of the schedule also hurt the team in terms of developing continuity throughout the schedule. Individual standouts for the team included junior college transfer Jim Porter who led the team's offense with five goals and five assists during the season. Junior Errol Jaufman also played well in the midfield and back for the Colonials while third year starter Bill Ginther also enjoyed a good year. Freshmen Shashi Roy and Mike Simpson were important new additions to the team with Roy selected as the team's most improved player for the 1977 season. Highlights of the season were well-played matches against Hartwick and Cornell both of which reached the NCAA New York final and a strong 2-0 win over Cortland, a team that reached the NY, N.J. NCAA final. With only two seniors leaving the team and fewer injuries, Bingham- ton will hopefully return to its position as one of the State's best Division Il soccer teams. The High Paint leam award was given to SUNY-B, at the Broome C.C. Ken Levey, Larry Madiefsky and Glenn Mclver were named to the All Tournament Team with Mclver being named the tourney's Most Valuable Player. Mac's 16th point in the Alfred win allowed him to pass the 1,000 point career scoring mark The Colonials were then hit with a rash of serious player injuries, to add to the loss of star shooting guard Rick Rochon before the season The most recent loss of Glenn Mclver due to academic ineligibility really hurt the Colonials. They are still very much alive in the conference race for first place, though, which would mean an NCAA post-season tourna ment bid.
