They have something to add, he says, and we have something to offer. Dickinson College members will be given priovity at social functions, and in any credit and non-credit courses that the Col- lege may initiate. This serrester. for example, Dickinson College students tak- ing American Government will view a series of films, followed . hy discussions with faculty. They wili have the chance to answer alternative questions on the final exam. i My, Paul Smith, Master of Dickinson College has expros- sed the desire to continue ex- perimentation within the cur- vicwium. He helieves that with- in collegiate structure, it will UCTURE be easier for students to ini- tiate new courses or course changes with faculty and depart- mental co-operation. It is hoped, for example, that faculty Fel- lows, will be able to expand their courses to include com- munity action and research, when appropriate. Under the terms of the Dick- inson College Constitution, mul- tiples of seventy-five members outside residence halls, or at least 107, thereof, are entitled te one representative. Enough students have signed up within the last week so that off-campus members will probably elect an additional representative to the Dickinson College Council. New members must be approved by a two-thirds vote of the Coun- cil. Off-campus members will have the same rights and privi- leges as resident members, and they will be eligible to serve on the committees of the Col- lege: Xcademie, Social Judici- Continued on Page 5 Right to Pers CKINSON DOORS CLOSED pen House Policies Lett to Dorms i Doors Close oposal Passes; ses Innovation 1al Privacy Cited Three Dickinson D Try 24 Hr. TrEE N SV SRS David' That the tradition of Stepping-on-the Coat? is a sacred and aweful tradition has by now been accepted by all of the diverse peoples of the Southern Tier. However, recent research has shown that the ceremony has the profoundest of religious import, and is deeply connected, not only with rhg crea- tion of Harpur but with the nature of the city of Binghamton. I have recently found this Biblical frag- ment which seems to me to be conclusive proof of the aweful past of Stepping-on-the-Coat. And there were a people that knew not of God's name, nor knew they of spring. Ar 1 these people lived on the banks of the Chenango and on the Southern Tier, in the City of Binghamton, which men knew as The Plattsburg of the South. And the people of Binghamton were wicked in the eyes of the Lord. For they had forgotten the harp and the psalm, they had forgotten good taste and the beauties of unaging intellect, but instead did they listen liscentiously to wicked music and base thoughts. And wanton was their love of Liberace and Lawrence Welk, and wanton was their love of Herman Wouk. And the people of Binghamton were they veritable Goliaths ameng Phillistines, and were they dangerous and warlike too, and many were the thousands their warrior-attorney had slain with the mind of an ass. And in every area did they for- sake the ways of the Lord. And God saw that the wickedness of Binghamton was great and that the thoughts of their hearts were always towards evil and it grieved the Lord that He had made the city. And the Lord said, I will smite Binghamton from the face of the earth, for it repenteth Me that I have made it. But Lawrence of Krestle found grace in the eyes of the Lord. And God said unto Lawrence, The end of the Triple Cities is upon thee. But make thee an ark of culture, and make it of brick; and dorms make thee in the ark, and call it Harpur. And the ark it was ugly, it was exceedingly ugly, yea in all creation was there no rival for it in things vile to look at. And the Lord said, Behold I, even I, can take no more of Binghamton, and I shall bring a winter that will destroy all of the crass and the vulgar, and wherever there is the breath of stupidity, yea that too shall die. But with thee Lawrence I make a convenant, and with every living thing of flesh will I keep in your ark of Harpur so that beauty and variation shall not die from the Southern Tier. And Lawrence took several of all living things. And took he from the plains of New York City the wild Bronx Jew. And the wild Bronx Jew did take poorly to captivity and he pined away in a great meeting room of the ark and took he nothing into him but grass. And took he also several of the upstate primitives, terrified little things whom the Lord had called, The beasts who are burdensome. And took he several of all the beasts of the field and of the peoples of the earth so that only the crass would die out, And the Lord gave unto Harpur food and drink, the distribution of which He, in His wisdom, con- cessioned to A.R.A. Slater. But the food was bitter and sickened some, and life on the ark was hard. And the winter lasted it 16 years, and all the culture which the Lord despised died from t.lhe'che of Binghamton, and Liberace came no more and there was no more music, and Norman Vincent Peale spoke no more, and there was no more thought. And the snow prevailed and Lawrence only remained alive and they that were with him in the ark. And then the Lord became assuaged and the winter stopped. And Lawrence sent a dove out of the ark, and sent he students to live off campus, and they became fruitful and multiplied. And the Lord said to Lawrence, who was now in his eight hundred and sixty year, 'Yea, here is my sign that shall never destroy Binghamton again, or at least in the forseeable future. And Lawrence looked up to the heavens and saw a coat-that coat, the stepping coat, my brethren. And the Lord said, Whenever there is winter shall send my coat and you shall step on it and that shall be my sign that there again will be spring and happiness and that the earth shall be plentiful with grass. And the Lord said, Yea, shall you make a holy rite of the sign, and shall you appeint a high- priest, and have a yearly ceremony, and you shall call the day, Stepping-on-the-coat-day, and you shall keep it holy and cut classes. And God saw what He had done, and saw that it was good, or at any rate mediocre, and bade his children live in peace. Philly Joe's President Dearing, Dean Belniak, Dean Gordon, Department heads, Heads of the Departments, honored guests, representatives of the media, members of the faculty, faculty members, fellow students and friends. We are here today to celebrate an occasion of great importance to you all. It is a time of rebirth, a time of new awakening, when flowers emerge from the dead soil and bodies emerge from beneath the heavy layers of winter clothing. A miracle has occurred and we are in the midst of it. Look around you, you can see that it is trueonce again affer the winter of our discontent there is, once more, there is grass on the Harpur campus. For this is Stepping-on-the-Coat, the time to cast off the shackles of old man winter and greet the virgin spring. In the past great scholars have' traced the ceremony through its literary history. Today, I would like to try to discover the origins of our rite in similar ceremonies of the past. Norman O. Brown suggests the entymological aproach and this is the method that I will employ. Perhaps the earliest known ceremony in our country is the Arthurian rite celebrating the spring. After long winters in Camelot, when bathing was impossible, the lords and ladies would immerse them- selves in the ritual outdoor bath. This is the famous Stepping-in-the-Moat ceremony of legend. Other scholars argue for the Indian strongu'lofion cults as our ancestors, the dread Stepping-on- the Throat ceremony. More recently, a theory has emerged that today's ceremony began during the Serbo-Croatian war, when the Serbs' official policy of aggression was called Stepping-on-the-Croat. Let us not forget the sodomic rites of the North Owego natives of slipping in goat, or the cere- 'mony of the ltalian immigrants of Stepping- -off-the-Boat. And how can any survey be complete without mentioning the N.Y. Times crosword puzzle of April 11, 1956-you all remember I'm sure the day- crushing testicles, abbr. the answer Stepping-on-the- Scroat. Last month, Dr. Pricsislk Wezardinik in his 3 page pamphlet; 'A Complete Survey of Polish History, Literature, and Culture, exposed the connection between our ceremony today and the Polish spring festival as an error by the translators themselves Polish. Instead of Wshklyuk, stepping, Rydlwcz or the Grblynceeech-coat, the true ceremony was Wsklyuk, stepping, Rydlwcz-on the Grblyneeech-garbage well, don't look at me, it's their ceremony. Personally, I feel that the only true ancestor of today's festivities is the famous stepping on the coat ceremony performed by Queen Elizabeth and Sir Walter Raleigh. In any case, spring has come, my friends, the weather is warm to stay. Cast off your coats and step upon them, and in doing so revel in your archetypes, your ancestors, whoever they may be and step and the world steps with you. for youth services winnie the pooh Al AY Q O fi s GOLIARDS Ed AveryPres.
