LIBRA LI Message from the Editor: The old adage that one picture is worth a thousand words is in my opinion quite correct. The format of The 1963 Colonist has basically followed this adage. The best copy cannot take the place of, or even do justice to, + a meaningful picture. I hope you feel, as I do, that the pictures speak for themselves. It is a member of the National Student Association and of the New York State Confed- eration of Student Governments. USG coordinates all- campus activities and campus student organizations. Tra- ditionally, its officers have been elected by the student body in the spring, and its members-at-large have been elected by the four classes in the fall. The representatives and officers meet regularly to discuss student affairs and arrange for investigation of student problems. They also sponsor Winter Weekend, Spring Weekend, and the Soph-Frosh Struggle. Finally, they act as the voice of the student body and communicate to the Faculty, Adminis- tration, and Public, student opinions, suggestions, and grivv;mcvs. 70 In the past year, USG has initiated a Fall Weekend and because of its success, will continue to sponsor the Weekend. and handled by appropriate USG committees, and miscella- Library cafeteria problems have been neous grievances have been discussed and remedied by the Suggestion and Grievance Committee. USG has con- tinued to work with the Dean's Commission for Reorgan- izing Student Government Structure. Most of USG's at- tention has been given to planning for the Trimester system. Besides instructing the Dean's Commission repre- sentatives, it set up a USG Committee on Trimester to discuss the many problems of adjustment that USG will face in the coming year and to offer concrete program suggestions to USG and the Dean's Commission. Mur- ov N anll ol g A Year Of Mixed Reactions It was a year of mixed reactions for the sports-minded Harpurite. Emotions ran the gamut from surprise to joy to disappointment, and the sections for the sports year, provided a ray of hope spelled POTEN- TTAL for next year. The Cross Country team opened the year for the fan and set the stage for the ensuing action. The harriers compiled a 35 record and were most impressive in a triangular meet, defeating both Union and ONeon- ta. As the harriers opened their season, the soccer team prepared to take the field, and before they left it, they had left rays of hope all over the campus. In their third game they defeated Hobart 31 for their first victory first victory ever and promptly followed it up with a vie- tory over a strong Geneseo squad, Playing inspired soccer, and showing promise for the future, the booters came on strong to wind up with a 3392 mark, and junior Ron Burnett made history with an Honorable Mention on the All-State team. December marked the lid-lifters for both the mermen and the cagers. The swimmers were dunked by R.P.I., but the basketball squad edged Hobart in a squeaker. The loss seemed to stifle the swimmers, as they lost their next four in a row. However, and happily, the mixed atmos- phere took over here too, and the mermen reeled off four straight wins to post a 45 season record. The last meet marked the departure of co- captains Madell and Selsby from the Harpur swimming scene, and both left with a poolful of records to their credit. Meanwhile, the cagers were following in the swimmers' wake. The scoring power of Mickey Greenberg and the sharp rebounding of Bobby Loomis could not make up for a constant cold eye from the floor for the team as a whole. Near the end of the campaign, the boys found them- selves, much to the fans' delight, and finished with a string of wins and a 610 record. Highlighting the mixed season were Greenberg's scoring and playmaking, Loomis' rebounding and offensive work, Schneider's vast improvement, and steady clutch work by Freedus and Moynihan. Co-captains Greenberg and Loomis will be missed sorely. Both closed out their illustrious varsity careers with flourishes. Mickey became Har- purs third cager to hit 1,000 points in a varsity career, and also the first to hit 400 points in one season. Adding to his scoring laurels was a 45 point performance, breaking the one game high of 39, in a contest that will not be an easy one to forget. Bob finished with his highest year- ly total, constantly out-rebounding taller men, and was a delight to watch on the hardwood. The teams all showed promising under-classmen, and the mixed sea- sons of all four of them left high hopes in the minds of Harpur's rabid fans, along with hints of better things to come in the not-too-distant fu- ture. 94 SWIMMING SCORES Harpur Opposition ........... o o ks 63 St. Bonaventure .......... . 28 57 ........ emeniaie 2L 8D . 36 58 27 68 .................. 48 47 ................ 62 28 .................. 63 32 Left to right: Seated: P.
