MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT: The year 1959-60 at Harpur is the year of the big change. For the first time plans for the future of Harpur College actually began to influence the lives of our students and faculty. This year we have 300, then 450 students living in the residence halls in Vestal, in the beautiful rooms completely surrounded by the inconveniences of continued construction. This year we have a wonderful gymmasium as large as the total of all the classrooms and laboratories on the Endicott campus. This year we have four buses making 30 round trips per day for the seven mile distance, with all meals, even including Sunday morning breakfast for the energetic, served in the old cafeteria in East Hall in Endicott. In all this apparent confusion is it possible to do as good a job in the basic preparation of Harpur students as we have done in the past and as we expect to do in the future? The answer is YES. There is no confusion in the minds of the faculty about the quality of work required. There is no confusion in the minds of the students. In fact academic work is superior to any other time in our history, student activity in clubs and sports is on a good basis, friendships are being made personal and professional growth are all about us. The Class of 1959 has experienced three years of the old, and one year of the transition. Next year there will be more in Vestal and less in Endicott. The year after we should all be in Vestal. But it will still be the Harpur you know when you seek out the kernel inside the imposing new shell. .. s Glenn G. Bartle, President
