AV AVAVAVAY . TAVAVATAVAVAV - VAVAVAVAVAVAVAVA 'A-A'A'A'A'A'A'A'l-z W Colonist TO THE SENIORS... The 1959 COLONIST is dedicated to those whose future will determine the future of Harpur College . . . MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT: The year 1959-60 at Harpur is the year of the big change. For the first time plans for the future of Harpur College actually began to influence the lives of our students and faculty. This year we have 300, then 450 students living in the residence halls in Vestal, in the beautiful rooms completely surrounded by the inconveniences of continued construction. This year we have a wonderful gymmasium as large as the total of all the classrooms and laboratories on the Endicott campus. This year we have four buses making 30 round trips per day for the seven mile distance, with all meals, even including Sunday morning breakfast for the energetic, served in the old cafeteria in East Hall in Endicott. In all this apparent confusion is it possible to do as good a job in the basic preparation of Harpur students as we have done in the past and as we expect to do in the future? The answer is YES. There is no confusion in the minds of the faculty about the quality of work required. There is no confusion in the minds of the students. In fact academic work is superior to any other time in our history, student activity in clubs and sports is on a good basis, friendships are being made personal and professional growth are all about us. The Class of 1959 has experienced three years of the old, and one year of the transition. Next year there will be more in Vestal and less in Endicott. The year after we should all be in Vestal. But it will still be the Harpur you know when you seek out the kernel inside the imposing new shell. .. s Glenn G. Bartle, President COLONIST STAFF EDITORIN-CHIEF .. Al Coen MANAGING EDITOR . Ulmer Peter VanderLinde Laurence Webster Silvio Zenone 112 A liberal education is achieved by a guided study of man's entire gamut of knowledge, as contrasted with the pursuit of a single branch of knowledge which has a specific application. Today, through the influence of the age in which we live, specialized bodies of knowledge expand and cleave, in a process not unlike the fission of micro- scopic organisms, into the new and even more specialized fields, which again expand, through research, and again split. Thus, in this type of intellectual climate, the only method of acquiring proficiency and the only method of in- creasing still further our knowledge, is through specialization. A specialized education, however, does not necessarily include the funda- mentals required for an increased sensitivity, a broadened understanding of the factors underlying human experience, a spiritual and moral sense the elements which, in the final analysis, are the essence of the knowledge needed for preserving the human pattern. Specialized education may produce nothing more than an individual highly skilled in his chosen field, but one perhaps unaware of the role of man. We believe that in order to develop ones full potential one must have a broad educational background before proceeding into a specific field of specialization . . . RICHARD D. With the season about to open, Jim Higgins. last season's top pointmaker suffered : deep charley horse in his leg and missed the first five games. To open and dedicate our gymnasium to intercollegiate competition, four teams engaged in a two-night Bas- kethall Weekend. Dr. Bartle awarded the Most Valuable Player Cup to Dave Bourns of Wooster. Harpur lost both its games that opening weekend. However, the Colonials put three frosh on show, all to very good advantage. As the first semester ended. seven games had been played. Review of action: The opening game of the big weekend saw Wooster of Ohio put on a tremendous exhibition of race horse basketball, swamping Hamilton. Vin Coyle hit for 26 that night for Hamilton. The second game saw the Hobart Statesmen take the measure of Harpus. For Harpur, 6-3 Jim Davis, 6-4 Tom Kirk and 5-10 Tony Cerasaro all made their first collegiate appearances. Meanwhile Steve Kucera, Steve Baker, Bob Griffis and Bob Thompson were plugging for their positions in the absence of Higgins. Steve Baker had 15 as Harpw lost, 58-44. Wooster won 78-48. The next night Hobart won again. this time over Hamilton, 68-57. Harpur was soundly trounced by the Scotties of Wooster, 95-53, Steve Kucera leading with 10 points, Wooster was the outstanding team, usually employing two five man units to outrun their opponent. It worked. One week later as part of Harpur's Winter Weekend, the Maritime College Privateers traveled to our gym from Fort Schuyler for an exciting overtime battle. the Harpur team winning, 63-60. Jim Davis sparkled with 15 and Steve Kucera continued his improvement with a dozen plus one markers. The very next week, Harpur left home soil for two battles upstate. They faced the Oneonta State Red Dra- sons. Coach Hal Chase's outfit at the time was the highest scoring small college in the country and they proved it with a 99-50 win over the visitors. Personal fouls caused the early loss of Davis and Kirk, Carl Zymet lead- ing the scoring with 12 and Baker with 11. Utica's Pioneers, only two days later took the Colonial's measure, 61-50, although Steve Kucera once again led the scoring with 13. And again it was personal fouls that made the loss a tough one. After nearly a month lay-off for the Christmas holidays; the Harpur quintet returned to action against Hart- wick. in Oneonta. The Warriors proved effective in the early minutes. rolling out to an 18-1 lead. From then on it was even. the Hartwick unit winning, 87-60. Jim Higgins return to action was dearly noticeable as he hit 21 points, and Jim Davis tossed in 17 for his personal high. The semester ended happily for the Green-and-White as they upped their home mark to 2 and 2 against the Geneseo State Teachers; 65-62, Higgins leading the way with 16. Jim Davis' last minute picture jump shot iced the decision for the Colonials. 117 GAMES Harpur Opponent Score 14 Hobart 55 55 Wooster 95 63 Maritime 60 59 Oneonta 99 50 Utica 61 60 Haxtwick 87 65 Geneseo 62 First Semester Results Won 2 Maritime, Geneseo Lost 5 Hobart, Wooster, Utica, Hartwick. The Senior Circuit, composed of the social clubs: LT.K.. S.0.5. Goliards, Adelphi, Baccacia, Dionysians. and service club A.P.O. and the Independents composed the league. The action was hectic and exciting and the schedule brought LT.K. and Goliards to battle as undefeated teams in the final week of play. After regulation play and two periods of overtime, the score was deadlocked. In a sudden death overtime, Al Pelliciotti of the Goliards scored on a jump shot to give them a 4240 win and the first-half erown. Second half play was still to remain. Meanwhile. South Corridor Two and West Corridor Three battled for the Rafuse Hall title with West prevailing. The anticipated dorm-social club game was never played due to the Frosh heavy academic schedule. The Goliards won by a forfeit. 123 The Colonist Staff would like to thank its advisor, Dr. Rodney Ketcham. for his help in making this book a reality. 124 ACTIVITI Wake up!
