The nineteen forty-eight Colonist was dedicated to those whose quiet inspiration caused a college to be built, who captured a vision! May their spirits light the path ahead. A decade has passed since then, a time in which the light of their spirit has shone on the near fulfillment of their vision. Harpur College has become an institution of high academic merit, the cultural and intellectual center of the community. The college has preserved the tradition of the liberal arts, encouraging her students to pursue a course, not always smooth, which leads, not necessarily to a set of absolute answers, but rather to the difficult task of asking a meaningful question. This, the scholar's right and duty to inquire, is the cornerstone of academic freedom. Such has been Harpur's achievement in the past years. Now, as a member of the State University of New York, also celebrating its tenth anniversary, Harpur College stands on the path, lit now not only by the spirit of the past, but by the hope of the future. We, in nineteen fifty-eight, present this tenth Colonist as a record of the decade of the Colonists publication, as a commentary on twelve years of Harpur's life, and we hope, as a promise for the path ahead. The Editor Endicott, New York Nineteen Hundred Fifty-eight.
