May their spirits light the path ahead. A decade has passed since then, a time in which the light of their spirit has shone on the near fulfillment of their vision. Harpur College has become an institution of high academic merit, the cultural and intellectual center of the community. The college has preserved the tradition of the liberal arts, encouraging her students to pursue a course, not always smooth, which leads, not necessarily to a set of absolute answers, but rather to the difficult task of asking a meaningful question. This, the scholar's right and duty to inquire, is the cornerstone of academic freedom. Such has been Harpur's achievement in the past years. Now, as a member of the State University of New York, also celebrating its tenth anniversary, Harpur College stands on the path, lit now not only by the spirit of the past, but by the hope of the future. We, in nineteen fifty-eight, present this tenth Colonist as a record of the decade of the Colonists publication, as a commentary on twelve years of Harpur's life, and we hope, as a promise for the path ahead. WRIGHT OH BFBKHU The vear opened auspiciously with a mass demonstration on the new campus. I+Tw The age of the machine finally came to Harpur while people watched breathlessly The shock of the hordes of new freshmen was too greal, and rioting was rampant . . . a special U.S.G. trouble-shooter was called in to evaluate the situ- ation and offer some constructive criticism and responsible comment on the new aspect of co-curricular activity, however, despite these efforts. another demonstration was held . . . WHICH ended . . . with dire consequences. a new law was established, how- ever, and the insurgent freshmen were brought to a swift and terrible justice. Peace was restored and the idyllic days of fall settled on Harpur. The daily packet boat from civili- zation brought news of an unhappy world, but Harpurites saw their domain through eyes blinded by tears of happiness and so all was calm, New leaders were chosen and one of the two or three fol- lowers discovered that Harpur had 8 heen invaded . elaborate precautions and defensive systems were erected to repell the invader. but alas, to no avail . . . The Snow Queen arrived but snow didn't, Some were not too worried about this. but the snow queen commit- tee stood around and wondered what to do. Finally they decided to wait, Suddenly, however, winter de- scended upon the little world of Harpur with a wet thud o :! AA il and the glnrinua season of winter sports began. the one on the right is a winter sport. Thus began that gay. mad round of social activity which has made Harpur the so- cial center of the Triple Cities. Dances were danced, Dragons were created, and a . . . student-faculty relations were at their warmest . . . While this was going on the fac- ulty got even warmer Our glorious leader was so impressed by this attitude of social activity and mirth, that he called in a well-known impressionist painter to capture the im- mortal moments on can- vas . . . and here is the result. and people had parties in blurry barns and musty cellars. But it all had to end. and donning their leiderhoesen, all of Harpur gathered together amid expressions of mixed emotion and joined in a concert and offered themselves forever to the service of Bacchus or perhaps more appropriately, Dionysius. While theses devotions were going on, the new Gymnasium rose looking like an IBM plant from out of the golden sunrise. The new semester arrived and some were gone. General mourning was declared and silence was heard in the land . . . with a great stamping of feet 3 and wild cheering the new freshmen came to Harpur. Soon, everyone had settled down for a long winter's nap and so things went on at Harpur, people did things and more things. It still snowed but everyone kept on dancing and crowning queens and more queens. Dr. Gruber finally made it and while he did, the dorm maid- ens maintained their usual orderly and studious life with the Ilu.x.m The girls began the attack and the Arab situation got progressively worse l K f r'- B Eaf but most people ignored it. .,.. P e People kept right on dancing and observing the usual so- cial amenities and dreaming fond dreams and hoping fond hopes with heads held high. The poet said that when she comes he'd know but most of the other people didn't know or care and so the year went on with the end coming into view. The future was as yet a bunch of balloons to be burst. People got together to talk aboul it and things remained, as IN THE BEGINNING, much the same until THE END ZHZ2unnEsrOmREmTZ2 G THE FRESHMAN CLASS. . . It is a matter of policy and purpose. A publisher must know the readers he serves . . . and give them everything he has got. For 54 years the publishers of The Binghamton Press have held steadfast to this staunch principle. Result? A reader-faith, a reader-belief, unmatched by few other newspapers. And this confidence, respect, prestige, has given The Press a degree of influence outstanding among newspapers of the nation. Perhaps that is why Time Magazine, in a recent issue, said that the Binghamton Press was the best small city newspaper in the United States.
