Vital to the continuance of American culture and security, it reawakens the conviction of the im- portance of freedom as the basis of our civilization, Liberal education is practical in the deepest sense. It is not the foe, but the unpublished ally of technology; and it is constantly affecting every field of human effort. At Harpur, through the interaction of faculty and students, and through social clubs and athletic activities, all can work toward the fulfillment and perfection of their common aim. For the student, the primary truth of liberal education is that he must first be a man, and then choose his profession. The Colonist is a record of this truth in action, ........ Our USG has been the Guiding Light among Harpur students since the days of TCC, This year we of USG have had the privelege of working under the very able Presidency of Jack Sullivan. A successful Retreat was held at the beginning of the year and many good suggestions, such as enlarging our NSA committee, were brought out, During the year the USL- sponsored such very suc- cessful affairs as the Student-Faculty Re- ception, the Mistletoe Ball and the annual Spring Weekend. In carrying out student suggestions, we have been able to extend the library hours and keep the student loungc open seven days a week, Because of the success of the USG's AAUP committee on course evaluation last spring, this program is to be continued this year., We hope that future USG's will be able to enlarge upon this and other programs. NATIONAL STUDENT ASSOCIATION Our campus NSA Committee really came into its own this year. It has been active both on campus and in Regional af- fairs. Harpur again secured a Regional office when Jack Sulli- van was elected Treasurer. The committee, headed by Charlie Lesko, has worked to initiate a lLeadership Training Program on campus and to establish the Student Discount Service inour community, Work oining with others..... e is our motto, but rewards of 1st ROW: Rose Tavino, Arlene Sklar, Charlie Les- satisfaction and gOOd times ko, Bev Cowan, Janet Greenwood. 2nd ROW: Dave make it worth while, Derrick, Joe Brennan, Sylvia Flynn, Evie Heiyen, Ed Sofka, E4 Hider. e R THE COLONIST I'he Colonist has made great strides this year, as we hope to prove by the appearance of this book by June! With our ambitious Editor, Joan Decker, we have put out what we hope will be considered the best book in Harpur's history, Everyone has workedtire- lessly, but special recognition should go to Bill Rincker and his staff who are respons- ible for much of the photography. 1st-Bev Cowan, Cathy Hickey. 2nd- Joe Gabor, Dianne Goundry, Art Skeirik, Mr. Bochnak, Kathy Sedlak, Don Mattis. 3rd- Bob Gallagher, Bernie Mochulski, Joe Man- zik, John Zwierzynski, Ron Letavish, Jim Parsons, Frank Wal, Bill Rincker, Bob Ben- nett, Joan Decker, mediums of self expression .. .. COLONIAL NEWS Attempting to follow suggestions made at the Retreat, the Colonial News included more news stories. This was made possible be- cause of the untiring leadership of Editor Ruth Camp. At mid-term, due to new sug- gestions, we tried to hit a happy medium in news writing, which we hope is satis- factory to all. Attempts have also been made to keep the CN circulation on an even keel. We realize that Harpur's Servicemen enjoy news from home and we have tried to give it to them. More help could be used in this department next year. Putting out a newspaper each week is not an easy job. We believe a special well done should be expressed to each and every member of the CN Staff . . CLARENDON The Clarendon, which is the traditional literary magazine put out by the students, was published last Fall for the first time since 1952, Scripts of all types, ranging from the serious to the fantastic, were submitted to the Editorial Board, headed by our own unpredictable Diane Goundry. Congratula- tions on a wonderful publication! We wish the Clarendon equal success in years to come. DRAGON SOCIETY Bill Hawver, Ruth Camp, Pat Lewis, Ellen Thurston, Mike Senio. Qur Dragon Society is anhonorary society S Yo v we encourage consisting of Juniors and Seniors who have been active in the organizations which make Harpur a lively community rather than justa freed om Of Q pl n ' on place of learning. Students who are able to earn the required number of points and re- ceive their Dragon Society pins should be very proud indeed. GAVEL CLUB The Gavel Cilub under the direction of Pete Zayac has had little to do this year, as peace and harmony have reigned over all. The major job undertaken was the issuance and necessary revision of the rushing regu- lations. We hope that future Gavel Clubs will have as few problems to be solved. 4 n;:; R 1st - Mickey Reynolds, Bev Cowan, Gerry Bakosh, Jean Green, Luther McWherter, 2nd - Jack Sullivan, Joan Decker, Ellen Thurston, Pete Zayac, Ruth Camp, Monica Wyzalik, Dick Reynolds. 3rd - John Zwier- zynski, Jerry Brennen, Frank Fres- sie, Ken Foreman, Joe Chalpin, Bar- ry Benjamin, Joe Manzik, Mike Sulick. 4th - Jay Levitt, Ray Ballard, Charlie Lesko, Tom O'Brien, George Dewan, Howard Goldson. COLONIAL PLAYERS S R e T Under the expert direction of Wayne Farrow, the Colonial Players chalked up two more hits this year. An addition was made in the form of a 25 charge to students, in order to bolster our small and sagging budget. With this addition we hope to put on an even bigger and better Spring Review, Arrange- ments are already under way and, as usual, things are going to be done early and orderly this year!! they have the time of their lives. . ... E . 3 RADIO The old Radio Workshop of a few years back was dusted off and put back into action this year with the addition of an interested group from Champlain. The sccond year at Harpur found the sophomores assumingincreas- ing responsibility and providing the frosh with the benefits of their experience, Their victory over the freshmen in the annual Frosh-Soph battle was one of the first indications of their worth, Their planning and leadership helped ease the confusion of the first year students during those early days in September, Much of their success can be attributed to the excellent quality-of their class officers. to new spheres of association..... With the season half over the record showed 2 wins and 6 loses. The win-loss account does not give the real picture as several of the games were dropped by a very small margin. To the Green and White Colonials the school is much indebted. through physical coordination 1st ROW: Mirone Klysh, Jake Meade, Frank Di- Graci, Dick Reynolds, Ken Goldberg. 2nd ROW: Coach Natale, Joe Robilotto, Skip Reynolds, Frank Byrne, Earle White and Tony Vetrano. Cross-Country is a sport that has not received its fair share of recognition by the public that it rightly deserves. The men of the Cross-Country team never know what it is to have a meet called off because of bad weather. They run in cold weather, in snow storms, in driving rain and sometimes they are blessed with fair weather. The team met in five dual meets -- winning 1 and dropping 4. The team dropped two very close matches which might have gone the other way had good fortune been shining a little more brightly. The cross-country men completed their season at Buffalo where they finished third'in the 4th Annual New York State Collegiate Field and Track Association Meet which was held even though a severe snow storm was in progress. 43 Spring 1954 saw the return to action of the Harpur College track team, After a 2 year absence from the sport, Coach Carolan is developing a track nucleus which is composed mainly of the fall cross-country team. The team is concentrating on relay and medley events. The track team opened its 1954 season by sending a squad to represent Harpur College in the famous Penn Relays. The track program this spring is to be held in conjunction with local high schools, in order to add to the attractiveness of both school programs. Welcome back, track development of skills ... 1st ROW: Jim Parsons, Chuck Rideout, Henry John- son, Ken Franklin. 2nd ROW: Coach Natale, George Gifford, Charlie Keane, Joe NeJame, Frank Byrne, Dick Fox. TENNIS The tennis team for 1954 begins its season with the knowledge that they will have a real task if they are to live up to their 1953 record - undefeated in 7 matches. The team has shaped up to be one of great promise, with a very strong nuc- leus left from last year's squad and with the addition of two new men from Cham- plain College. The 1954 team should be another winning squad. The schedule for the coming year consists of several schools who gave the Harpur College Netmen some very tough competition. In order for the team to come out victorious, it will need the best from each individual and a know- ledge that the student body is behind them. GOLF TEAM Under the capable direction of Coach John -Budd, the 1954 edition of the Harpur College golf team went into action. The team consisted of several returning veterans, plus the addition of several new golfers. A rough nine matches comprised the golf squad schedule for 1954, but the boys on the greens always came through for the green and white of Harpur College. Harpur College says hats off to the 1954 team. 1st ROW: Joe Nestor, Don Strope, Earle White. 2nd ROW: Joe Delmar, Ray Romankiewicz, Coach John Budd, Marsh Swartwood. INTRAMURALS In order that more students might be able to participate more fully in ath- letics, Harpur College has devised a program of intramurals that runs from football in the Fall to basketball in the Winter, and baseball in the Spring. The school has been particularly fortunate in having the facilities of the Endicott Boys Club for a co-recreational period that allows both the boys and the girls the opportunity to relax their minds from the rigors of classroom work and the opportunity to develop their sense of group play. by teamwork ... LU R the JUNIORS approach Fhe Junior class is very small this year as compared with the Senior, Sophomore and Fresh- headed man classes. It 1s by an energetic and personable President, Ken Forman, who is a transfer from our late sister College -- Cham- plain.
