where he also studied for his M. S. While at the Hoosier College , Gene gained much valuable coaching experience as head trainer of the Indiana Hockey team during his senior year. He also served as the assistant trainer of the football and track squads for three years at this same school. Before starting his coaching career, Welborii en- listed in the Navy in 1942 and was discharged three years later after reaching the rank of Chief Phar- macist. In view of all the handicaps that he has en- countered, Gene Welborn has really done a com- mendable jobi at Triple Cities College. These handi- caps include, especially, lack of proper training fa- cilities and even lack of sites to play home varsity games, and then lack of adequate manpower, which is to be expected in a school of such recent origin. In the two years that Welborn has held his posi- tion he has managed to give the college a well- rounded athletic program. He initiated very success- ful intramural softball, basketball and football leagues to provide all students with much needed recreation. As he gets more and more assistance in the coaching department, the college can expect much better athletic results. COACH GENE WELBORN Une of the busiest men at Triple Cities College today is Gene Welborii. Besides having the full-time job as director of athletics, Welborn spends a good part of the winter months as the head coach for the Varsity and junior Varsity Basketball Squads. Most of his time in the spring is taken up as the mentor of the Green and White Diamondeers. He devoles his spare time to instructing in Physical Education. Mr. Welborn received his appointment in May and assumed his many and varied duties here at Triple Cities in july of 1947. Mr. Wfelborn, a man from the mid-west, was a graduate of Anderson High School. He attained his B. S. in Physical Education from Indiana University

Frances Kozlowski, Beatrice Thorson, Edythe Scales, Patricia Lamb, Barbara Meaker, janet Forbes. CHEERLEADERS With only Edythe Scales, Pat Lamb, and Barb Rood returning from last year's group, it was neces- sary to hold several weeks of spirited tryouts in order to complete a squad of seven feminine cheerleaders, Fran Kozlowski, Bea Thorson, Barbara Meaker, and janet Forbes were the new members of the squad. Ediei' Scales was elected captain of the group. This year the cheerleading squad literally started from scratch . All of the old cheers were aban- doned and some excellent new ones worked out. The fight song written by Mrs. Hopkins-Moses and set to music by Howard Evans, still remains TCC's number one pep tune. The cheerleading squad has come a long way from the one which was formed in December 1945. It has become indispensible at the basketball games and with the cooperation of the student body, has done a fine job of arousing school spirit and interest in the athletic events at TCC. Faculty advisors to this group are Miss Plankin- ton and Mr. Battaglini.
