We at Central are indeed fortunate to have many of this type on our faculty. Since a teacher’s role may at times seem unappreciated, we would like our faculty to know that their untiring efforts on our behalf do not go unrecog¬ nized. Thus, the Panorama Annual Yearbook proudly dedi¬ cates this ’65 edition to the teachers of Central High School. 4 Nothing ever succeeds which exuberant spirits have not helped to produce. — Anthony Ludovici 5 Spirit beareth joy in the hearts of men. — D. The habits and attitudes of today relentlessly pro¬ ject themselves into the habit and behavior of our tomorrows. See to it that reason, will power and integrity are stepping stones to happiness and a bright future.” —Willard C. Hamlin Our Principal, Mr. Hamlin 11 MM Counselors MISS ERMA PRENTICE MR. ERNEST LALLEY 12 MR. JOHN LALLEY In 213, Mr. John Lalley, Executive Assistant to the Principal, directs a well-organized attendance office, contributing much to the over-all improve¬ ment of Central’s student body. In dealing with an individual,’’ Mr. Lalley stated, one should consider his specific problem, give it personal care, and follow-up, at the same time hoping to improve the student’s outlook and his need for a sense of belonging. Once accomplished, he can be channeled to join others in advancing school spirit.” MR. JOSEPH POWERS In a whirlwind of college applications, S. A.T. forms, and program cards, Central’s guidance counselors, Mr. Joseph Powers, Mr. John Brennan, Miss Erma Pren¬ tice, and Mr. Ernest Lalley fulfill their vital duties. The ability of students to heed the call of the future indicates the success of these four advisors. A shining beacon in the darkness of indecision, our advisors light the road toward achieving a profitable and re¬ warding life. By reducing the number of questions about the choice of college or career, Central High School’s guidance counselors perform a great service for the entire student body. MR. However, each purchasing trans¬ action must follow an official procedure. Miss Lela Rogers is bookkeeper for all of Central’s extracurricular accounts. As account clerk, she must have an accurate and up-to-date record for every penny which enters and leaves a club’s treas¬ ury. In addition to daily tabulations, Miss Rogers compiles a total financial report. This semi-annual statement con¬ sists of a fiscal record of all clubs, in¬ cluding the final balance. We deeply regret that she leaves us in June for a well-earned retirement. Miss Rogers’ manner and warm personality will be missed. For her nine years at Central, the faculty and the students thank Miss Rogers for her dedicated service and wish her a rewarding future. In the same way, Central’s General Organization, during its Fall 1964 term, under the guidance of Mr. Robert Hein, faculty ad¬ visor, and the leadership of its officers: president, Michael Costello; vice-president, Joyce Parks; treasurer, Ronald Arias; secretary, Theresa Gentile, has improved our school in many ways. A committee was formed to get a record board for the gym to acknowledge Central’s outstanding athletes’ records. The newly formed Sunshine Committee sent cards to students and teachers who were absent from Central for a long period because of illness. A new trophy case was also purchased by G.O. to house the many trophies won by our school’s outstanding students. A publicity committee was organized to inform the student body of that being accomplished by G.O. At the Southern Tier Conference held at U.E., such topics as Are sororities and fraternities detrimental to school activities?’’, School rival¬ ries”, and The honor system” were discussed. Also, an Exchange Day Program was held where students from Vestal, U.E., Johnson City, Susquehanna Valley, Maine- Endwell, Chenango Valley, and Central were exchanged to get a better picture of life in other schools in the Southern Tier. We proudly salute the representatives who have worked so hard and accomplished so much during G.O.’s Fall 1964 term. General Organization is the student government of Binghamton Central High School. Although the actual business of the organization is carried out by the elected officers and homeroom representatives, every student is a member. Essentially, the purpose of G.O. is to initiate and enact various projects for the betterment of the school and student body. Heading Spring G.O. are President Judson Griffin, Vice-President Linda Rozen, Secretary Alexia Mitrus, and Treasurer Kathleen Madigan, all of whom were elected by the students. Acting as faculty advisor and giving counsel and assistance when needed is Mr. Robert Hein. Activities of General Organization, usually carried on by committees, are often the result of suggestions initiated by both teachers and students. As one of its major projects, G.O. hopes to inaugurate a basic plan for the general improvement of the school’s appearance along with other projects involving students, school, and the community. General Organization, affording invaluable experience in leadership and business procedure, is undoubtedly one of Central’s most rewarding organizations. Row 1: K. Ludy, C. Wood, S. Soldo, S. Central’s Public Speaking Club this year, under the skillful supervision of the versatile Miss Helen Foley, has achieved unique success. The foremost reason is the new system of organi¬ zation. Rather than being one unified group, the club is an aggre¬ gate of several of Miss Foley’s Public Speaking Classes. Each class has elected its own officers. A different chairman presides Debate Students! Do you enjoy a good fight? Do you crave con¬ flict? Rush to room 2 every Wednesday for excitement and con¬ flict galore (verbal conflict), that is. Here meets the Debate Club, one of Central’s more thought- provoking organizations. Members, led by President Andrea Bach and Secretary Margaret Keane, assemble each week to discuss the pros and cons of pertinent topics, both current and past. Under the supervision of Mr. Willard Glasgow, the club instills in its members basic techniques and the art of logical over the class each day. The club strives to improve members’ ability in participating in group discussions, preparing and delivering various types of speeches, and many other aspects of a practical nature in oral communication with others. Club thinking, an increasingly important ability in today’s complex ' world. In order to become a full-fledged member, one must participate in a qualifying debate. Members debate among themselves. They also debate interscholastically on the local television program, STETA. Debate Club invites the student body to come to room 2 to enjoy hearing these lively discussions. Row J: F. Gordon, M. Art Club Just as Italy was the art and cultural center of Europe during the Renaissance, Room 325 is the art and cultural center of Central where all her creative artists congregate. Under the guidance of their faculty advisor, Mrs. Borth¬ wick, and their officers, President Nancy Stocks, Vice- President Martha Night, Secretary Karen Chapman, and Treasurer Ann Slavit, these artistic students have added a note of beauty to Central’s hallowed halls with their numerous posters and creative decore. A Christmas bazaar was held in the library where baked goods, candles, and Christmas decorations were sold. The money raised from the bazaar and from the sales of Christmas candy and peanut brittle was used to help defray expenses for the members’ one-day trip to New York City. A book on Renaissance art was also donated to the school library by the Art Club. 45 Row 1: (Left to right) M. Hranek, A. Mitrus, D. Goodwin, K. Hallett, D. Goldstein, Mr. A. Bernstein, Advisor; L. I knew, as I looked into the window of 202, that an era had suddenly ended. A yearbook, of course, is a living annual of a period. The yearbook of 1965 is such an annual, for it links a phase in our lives, a phase that can never be re-lived except through the pages of our yearbook. What was the center of that era that so hur¬ riedly swept by? Many things contribute to a period and make it worth remembering. Our yearbook is such an instrument, and we, its authors, were the heart of this era. We were the creative Lost-Youth” of that private little age. I fancied myself sitting in the staff room of Vanity Fair, you know. We had great fun and talked of olden times. We seemed to dress in terribly striking outfits. Everybody was happy in 202. This atmosphere lent the room a spirit and an aura that no other room, club or office had. Per¬ haps I am prejudiced, but this is the way I remember it. Linda Rozen, our guiding goddess, was the most even- tempered, beautiful, and level-headed editor I had ever seen. She would tilt her head to the left or right and quietly demand either this or that. Then she would smile. It was a remarkably wise method of telling a staff member yes” or no”. My memory does not tell me too much of Tom Muller. (He was one of Linda’s demi-gods.) I do remember he smiled exactly like Clark Gable. David Goldstein was the other assistant editor. As I re¬ call, he was too, too smart and grinned at simply every¬ thing, rather like an ancient llama. Kathy Hallett always raved, Very busy, Michael!” How¬ ever, she was interested and that’s putting it mildly. Kathy was Chip and Dale to me ... I can’t remember which one or both. Edie Davenport and Lynne Spector were 46 remarkably efficient, for they handled business matters with the ease of an intricate IBM computer. David Goodwin was a reincarnation of an eighteenth century cynic. I always pictured him flitting about Ver¬ sailles with Voltaire. (Wouldn’t they have made an aristo¬ cratic pair?) Before a picture was taken, he’d say: Well, this will surely not come out!” But it always did—and very well too. Now, Ardyce Lingoski—there was a girl with a name. For weeks I thought her name was Artist. Artist!” Mr. Bernstein would call her and I’d think: Must be a family name. Why isn’t she on the art staff?” At any rate, the girl punched and pounded her typewriter through num¬ erous classic articles by the write-up staff. I often wondered if she took Knox gelatin to strengthen her nails. Alexia Mitrus cavorted with Marge Hranek. What humor they both had! Alexy (as I called her) was Clara Barton and Marge, Jenny Lind. Marge poured over every write-up carefully. Alexia made comments about the write-ups and Marge made comments about the drawings. These were moments of their riotous humor. I think Marge invented the term ' Bod’. Both girls wore wonderful scarves with flowers all over them. Marge usually wore hers around her neck. Alexia may have worn hers in a number of places. She had a flair for fashion! Jean Borelli was lay-out editor. She not only was very pretty but talented, too. Her type of work was very much in vogue at the time, favored by the Borthwick School of Design. But most of all—I remember Mama. Not Mama, but Papa. I mean Mr. Bernstein, in this case. He was to me, not the corpulent, austere, condescending one, but the all¬ knowing idol, instead. Mr. Bernstein was ever-patient. And so kind too. I can almost taste those hard, many- colored candies he’d dole out every so often. I l iked butterscotch best. I remember so much about that room and those people that made it live. I remember our view of Main Street (Neisner’s, Acme, Ward’s, Trinity Memorial Church), our funny sayings on the blackboard, our laugh¬ ter, and our serious moments of hushed tones. I remem¬ ber the pink lipstick of our girls, those black knit-stockings, and those huge ribbons. I remember the madras shirts Richard Blumm and Ellen Rappaport sell yearbooks at the Hostess Desk. and the fact that pants were getting a little looser around the hip. I remember the bangs on the boys—those vulgar foppish locks that were so popular. I remember the girls’ flip hair-dos too and those long, to-the-eyebrow bangs of theirs. We talked of Goldwater, pop art, the Rolling Stones and G.T.O.’s. We created from all these varied elements; we wrote of the day and drew of the day and we photo¬ graphed those fortunate ones who were a part of our period. We preserved this nostagia ... we made a yearbook. Mike Butler works on a poster for the subscription campaign. Homeroom 202 47 Row 1: C. de Laurentis, M. Juriga, L. Rozen, E. Rappaport, L. That’s where Lit Club, the home of literary giants, convenes each Tuesday afternoon. Heated dis¬ cussions prevail when topics varying from circus life to devil worship are carried on among the thirty members. Using the club’s book, American Short Stories, as the basis for this term, the discussion leader guides, questions and provokes, or uses any other means to inspire members to utilize our great American tradition, freedom of speech. When the members are not involved in profound literary debacles, they organize bake sales, donate books to the school library, and plan charitable projects for Christmas and Easter. Qualifications for joining Lit Club require strong convictions and an equally strong voice to be heard. ' Sponsored by Mr. Alfred Tonolo, the purpose of the club is not only to effect a greater proficiency of the Spanish language upon its members, but also to increase knowledge of such facets of Spanish and Latin-Ameri- can culture as history, topography, customs, and artistic expression. 48 This year we are delighted to have with us Roberto Bedatou, an exchange student from Argentina. Roberto speaks Spanish so fluently that he was unanimously elected honorary president of the group. One stipulation for joining this club is some knowledge and interest in Spanish. Band 51 Foreign Exchange Students A bright, courteous, but shy neighbor from below the equator entered Central through the Rotary Club in 1965. He is Roberto Bedatou from Bolivar, Argentina. When he first arrived, he spoke no English. How¬ ever, since then, he has become a good conversationalist and has made numerous friends. While attending Central, he took business management, English, public speaking, and Spanish. At home, he enjoyed horseback riding, swimming and dances. Here he also enjoyed movies and dances. Because there were many things to learn” and that it was an ideal way to compare and contrast two countries, Roberto found his stay stimulating. Roberto liked everyone at Central, teachers and students alike, who in turn, enjoyed his visit equally as much. Roberto Bedatou The other night at a jet-set discotheque, Soile Joatinen, the exciting blonde from Finland, jumped to her feet and warbled the entire chorus from Finlandia”. This patriotic incident is only common-place to those who know Soile. When not jetting to and from the hinterland, Soile drapes herself in Valkyrie out-fits and gives violin concerts to the crown heads of Europe. Having an affinity for piano, Soile sometimes gives breath¬ taking recitals in Vienna, Luxembourg, and Central’s auditorium. On her recent trip to the States, she entered into my educational phase”—as she calls it, and now has become a true Centralite. Soile Joatinen Gabriel Sanchez, a pleasantly reserved sixteen-year old from Bogota, Columbia, was the guest of John Sebesta this past year from November through January. Although, technically speaking, he was here on his summer vacation, via the International Fellowship program, he attended classes as every other Centralite. In Bogota he attended a Catholic private school for boys; therefore, English, Spanish, public speaking, and business management classes were a new experience for him. Besides a lively in¬ terest in science, Gabriel proved to be very active in sports, disclosing that he liked golf, soccer, swimming, water skiing, and baseball. He also admitted that he likes dancing, but not the twist.” In answer to the standard question of how he liked the United States, Gabriel enthusiastically replied, Very much!” t Gabriel Sanchez Paresis 52 Varsity Choir Row 1: D. The choir, which has performed at school functions and before local civic groups, merits unusually high praise. Central is indeed proud of these girls and boys who make such beautiful music together. Dramatics Club This year our theatrically inclined students satisfied their soaring talents in two school productions. In the fall, a revue of several familiar television programs was presented. The scripts, which were written by students, came to life when the faculty appeared on Central’s s tage. The major spring production was the musical, The Sound of Music. Here we saw the students joining together in festive song and dramatic action. Aside from the work involved in these performances, the students also found time to indulge themselves in typical high school fashion. At times, they almost seemed to forget their advisor’s (Miss Helen Foley) dictum: All fun and no play infuriates me!” This venerable lady of the theater was often seen with Mr. Thomas Clune, who undertook the mus¬ ical direction. Together they worked miracles with cast and crew in preparation for the big night. Membership is comprised of students who volunteer their study hall time to assist several departments of the school. Under the able supervision of Mrs. Florence Houpis, members are as¬ signed to such places as the offices, the library, the bookroom, the gym, and the clinic. Occasionally, teachers also take advantage of this service. The nature of this service varies from running errands to performing clerical work. Mrs. Nellie Cartwright, Central’s nurse, heads these future Clara Bartons and Albert Schweitzers! Our chapter of the Red Cross has conducted several drives: a membership drive, candy and bake sales; all this hard work was carried on to support the purchase of new; partition curtains for the clinic as well as the purchase of joke books and personal kits to hospital patients.. This benevolent and most active of Central’s organizations brings joy to the entire staff. We salute you! C{ Block B members: Bill Mares, Ed Petras (vice-president), and Jerry Smith (president). MR. ALAN CAVE Block B” The Block B” Club is certainly representative of Cen¬ tral’s male athletes under the strong leadership of Mr. Allan Cave. Membership is attained when a student earns a letter competing in a varsity sport. Members are expected to maintain such standards as character, integrity, and good sportsmanship. Led by their capable leaders, Mrs. Lillian Nezelek and Miss Margaret Frear, these mem¬ bers serve to demonstrate in gym classes the athletic prowess gained from energetic training. These girls can be easily recognized by their striking white uniforms. 61 Key Club David Goldstein is vice-president and Tom Muller is presi¬ dent. Industry is the order of the day for Central’s Key Club. Its membership works to promote school spirit, with efforts like revival of the ancient tradition of the Key Club Sweetheart, and novation and revamping of other old cus¬ toms. Besides developing all kinds of spirit, these young men distribute programs at the football games, write and pro¬ vide for the publication of our priceless handbooks, partici¬ pate in car washes for charitable organizations such as the United Fund and the fight against leukemia, and even grant overseas aid! They also operate hat-checks and re¬ freshment stands at the shool dances. Key Club is affiliated with Kiwanis International. Row 1: D. Wales, B. joggerst, D. Roberts, T. Goosley, R. Ayres, T. As a result of the efforts of screaming editors, roving photographers, and frantic reporters, Pan News is published monthly each term. School events, information about ca¬ reers, and interviews with outstanding seniors appear under the auspices of our school newspaper. The creativity and versatility of our gifted students are displayed in poems and short stories. Girls’ and boys’ sports sections make known all the news in and around the gym and the results of all inter-scho¬ lastic competition. A focal point of Pan News is the Pa Central” column, devoted to the random observations of life at Central, both aptly and amusingly expressed by its author. Another feature is Frankly Speaking,” which con¬ sists of letters to the editor. Inquiring Photographer” offers answers to specific questions of current interest from typical Centralites. These articles and others bring to reality Pan’s nickname, The Voice of Central”. Written and edited by the energetic staff, the paper is available to stu¬ dents for 15c. The nerve center of Pan News is 220, which enjoys the distinction of being the only homeroom in Central with a lettered door. There, aspiring young journalists strive to meet the problems of gathering all the news that’s fit to print.” However, their task is lightened by the unfaltering wisdom and wit of Miss Mary Holleran. From celebrating Shakespeare’s birthday to entertaining Nigerian visitors, Pan members display that selfsame spirit and ingenuity which help make Pan Neivs an outstanding paper. Editor-in-chief .... This year Honor Society once again rendered valuable service to Central. Under the direction of Miss Elizabeth Prior, many activities were organized. Members tutored students, maintained hostess desk duties, and supervised in the cafeteria during noon hours. Another service of this society was ushering during two Awards convocations, two commencements, all regular assemblies, and the Night of Music” program. Honor Society also staged two Honor Graduate assemblies and their receptions, as well as two induction assemblies and receptions for its own new mem¬ bers. In January and June, Honor Society awards were pre¬ sented to the outstanding graduates in the fields of fine arts, industrial arts, and homemaking. A new feature, added to the already wide scope of activities of this society, was the participation in an area conference of the National Honor Society. J. Shorter, President; E. Skepticism was revealed in the minds of many because this was Central’s first year in cross-country competition. Once the sea¬ son commenced, this attitude changed. Coached by Mr. John Sasinek, the mem¬ bers of the team displayed their abilities to the utmost in competing with area schools. Central was undefeated in dual and tri¬ angular meets and placed fourth in the sec¬ tional cross-country championships. Paul Breslin, one team captain, placed seventh in a field of ovar one hundred at the sectionals. Paul’s achievement enables him to compete later in the intersectionals or state cross¬ country meet. Team effort is the key to victory in cross¬ country competition. Congratulations to the team for a speedy finale! Row 1: R. Costello, R. Roseman, P. Lott, J. Griffin, J. Berry, T. Meade, P. High school amateur wrestling emphasizes skill, agility, and strength. Under the direction of Mr. Kenneth Vann and Mr. Richard Rush, Central’s wrestlers have undergone a series of fundamental training. The amateur wrestling program involves thirteen weight classes ranging from 98 pounds to unlimited, offering wrestling opportunities to boys of all sizes. Before each inter-scholastic match, preliminary matches are held to deter¬ mine which boys will wrestle on the junior varsity and the varsity squads. The winner of each of these contests wrestles on the varsity, while the next best wrestles on the junior varsity. A freshman, sophomore, or junior may be a J.V. wrestler, whereas the varsity wrestler may be any of these or a senior. With the introduction of wrestling, B.C.H.S. has pur¬ chased a striking blue and white wrestling mat on which is pictured the Central High Bulldog. Involving just as much practice as basketball and football, wrestling is an equally exciting sport to watch. With the advent of the swim season came a new coach, Mr. William Yelverton, and a new manager, Bill Myers. The notion that this would be a building year for the team was demolished by the sheer determination and stamina dis- playd by the boys as they won close meet after close meet. From the beginning the aquatic spotlight centered on Tom Meade and Bill Mares. Meade especially highlighted the season by relentlessly slash¬ ing city records and ably re¬ presenting Central in the East¬ ern Scholastic Swimming Championship. With the departure of Meade and Mares, future B.C.H.S. swim teams will be dependent upon the sopho¬ mores and juniors of this year’s squad. Alan Cave and the Cavemen” bounded through ano¬ ther successful season to win the Eastern Division of the Southern Tier Conference Title. Despite the loss of last year’s graduates, the B.C.H.S. basketball team per¬ formed well. Coach Cave was armed with the five C’s: Callahan, Chanecka, Costello, Campbell, and Cicak. Walt Callahan and Steve Chanecka were the board men,” both con¬ tributing points to Central’s talley, while A1 Campbell s jump shot and versatility also greatly aided the team. The use of artistic ball handling to foil opponents was Mike Costello’s trademark. Ed Waples’ patented jump” shot reverberated the courts until mid-term graduation. Albany’s refusal to allow Waples to finish the season was a blow to both our offense and defense. The Junior Varsity team was coached by Daniel Wat¬ kins. As soon as the first resplendent blades of grass appear so too, do our golfers. All through the spring they engage in what they term an athletic splendor on the grass,” which indeed, it is once the season is in full swing,” there is no stopping them. Coach Lovuolo provides for the instruction and incen¬ tive, while the golfers provide the enthusiasm and skill. Together they refute the common belief that golf is just a simple matter of hitting a little white ball into a hole with a stick. Our varsity golfers aptly prove the opposite: that golf is. one of the most difficult sports to play, but when executed properly (namely, when a player reaches that perfection of physical dexterity, accompanied by grace and a keen sense of accuracy, it makes golf an art as well as a sport. It was recently noted, by a popular magazine, that tennis has become the game to America’s present generation. That game of aristocrats (it was first played at Versailles during the reign of Louis XVI) is presently enjoying the same popularity it did when a majority group in France took that old-stand-by the Tennis Court Oath. Tennis now ranks above football, accord¬ ing to those survey-taking magazines, in popular¬ ity. A young thing of sixteen will now invite the Tennis Captain, rather than the Football captain to her orgy. And where else can shy sophomore girls get a gander at a hirsute knee? A tennis court has so much to offer! Our own Racket Club led boundingly on by the ever cheered-at Mr. Disinger. Here at Cen¬ tral, on the Susquehana, ' tennis is pursued eager¬ ly by our elite sports-lovers, those of the Racket Club who cheer, on to victory you racket-eers.!” 83 Track As the rubber-soled, spiked track shoes raced toward the finish line, Central was proud that for the first time in fifteen years a home track meet was being held at MacArthur field. Whether it was pole vaulting, jumping hurdles, throwing the shot put or the discus, or just running, Central was out there fighting. From April 27 to the intersectionals at Cornell on June 12, our team, inspired by its coach, Mr. Allen Cave, produced an admirable record. Now the finish line is reached, the dusty track shoes are taken off, but they will run again to victory with others filling them. Row 1: A. Cave, Coach, R. Arias, J. Sebesta, N. Maragus, J. Steed, J. Among the outstanding players was cat¬ cher Jerry Smith. Mike Sheehan also drew attention to himself for his excel¬ lent hitting and pitching ability. An¬ other scene-stealer was Kurt Rorick, who proved to be the team’s number one outfielder. Certainly, the coach, Mr. Robert Sweeney, deserves much credit. It was he who contended with the problems of rebuilding the pitching staff and filling six vacated positions, all of which contributed to the success of the team. Front Row: A. Marcello, J. Urban, G. Mr. Eugene Flood, Faculty Manager of Athletics 87 tktUt 88 INTRAMURALS 89 Boys’ Intramurals Central’s male student body responds enthusiastically to intramural sports. Participants compete in a diversi¬ fied program. Intramural sports include basketball, touch football, bowling, badminton, ping-pong, shuffle-board, and vol¬ leyball. Teams, organized on a grade basis, are sub¬ mitted to the gym teachers for approval. The noon hour is set aside for participation in competitive games. A final championship game between the top two teams at each grade level terminates the season of a sport. Stu¬ dents receive points for playing. Additional points are given to all members of the winning team. Besides, coveted trophies are awarded to those who have compiled the largest number of points for their team. The intramural program at Central, open to anyone who wishes to join, develops good sportsmanship and athletic ability. Through a variety of seasonal sports, these boys enjoy keen rivalry. The ability of each entering member is not questioned, thus permitting all to partake In the general spirit of gymnastics. 91 Girls’ Intramurals 92 Abandoning all thoughts, quizzes, and textbooks of a typically hectic day at 3:30, Central’s girl athletes run to the gym to engage in an in¬ tramural program. A busy schedule, under the supervision of Mrs. Lillian Nezelek and Miss Margaret Frear, offers our stalwart athletes fun and physical fitness in volleyball, basketball, hockey, gym¬ nastics, and ' ' slim-nastics”. Also, aquatic-minded students turn to life¬ saving, synchronized and free swim. In either case, the girls display a great amount of stamina and enthusiasm. The female athletes who show excellence in a particular sport are chosen to represent Central at sports day and play day competitions. During these contests, our girls demonstrate agility, skill, sportsman¬ ship, and school spirit—qualities encouraged by Central’s intramurals. 93 Row 1: L. Kozuboski, D. Caganek, N. Spencer, J. After fifteen hours of training in Central’s pool, girls under sixteen receive their Junior Lifesaving Badge while older girls train for seventeen hours. Upon completion of a two-hour written examination and a practi¬ cal examination in the water, successful candidates are eligible to become Senior Life Savers. Tbe students learn the various rescue techniques such as approaches to a drowning victim, release of holds, methods of carrying victims to land, and resuscitation, as well as many other facets of personal water safety. The lifesaving course • definitely improves swimming habits and em¬ phasizes the need for taking safety precautions at all times. Life Saving Row 1: Miss Frear, J. Stevenson, R. Conant, L. Schiller 95 CLASSES SOPHOMORE CLASS Laboring up to Central’s third floor, one can find a covey of the youngest set to arrive here. Slightly bewildered, anxious, yet brave and eager, they represent the unutterably and unquestionably naivete of youthful verdancy the Sophomore B”. To them, precise floor locations of library, cafeteria, and classrooms, represent a phantasmagorial struggle equal to the problem of an Urban Renewal expert searching for new and better routes up, around, and down Main Street at 6:00 P.M. Irked by such harassment, these sophomores plod onward, however, fearful to inquire of a more sophis¬ ticated student, the sophomore A,” Oh, where is that place I’m searching?” Other problems beset these fledglings. They center, around the necessity of establishing new friendships, form¬ ing an acquaintaince with 213 and 214, enduring strength and time filling out innumerable copies of program cards, etc; and last but not least, setting up rapport with their teachers. Yet, it is from them that Central’s future exalted Super Seniors emerge. Hail to thee, Sophomore B”! JUNIOR CLASS The typical Central High junior leads an active, interest¬ ing life. Congregating areas for some juniors before 8:30 A.M. and 1:00 P.M. seem to be centered around the drink¬ ing fountains, while others prefer the stairways and lockers. A leisurely pace is maintained until just a moment before the bells ring. It is the juniors who hold the five-second homeroom-dash record which enables them to cruise the halls until approximately 8:29! Their position in high school is really envious. Why? They have already passed the sophomore stage, (no longer ending up in the pool when looking for the counselor’s office.) Able to look forward to an approaching glorious senior year, Central’s juniors are known to be spirited, studious, and industrious. They are actively associated with many of our extra¬ curricular organizations. Indeed Central’s juniors are a distinct credit to the school. 96 Row 1: C. Gadue, L. MacClary, B. Paddock, L. Bolten, F. Yet, anxiety accompanied a true desire to learn. However, it was not long before the sophomore slump arrived in the form of a geometry course which has puzzled mathematicians throughout the ages. Finally, after seven or eight terms of this subject, most of them caught on. That tenth year was filled with introductions to the untouchables” around school who were better known as seniors. Little did they know that someday they would meet the very same test. Gradually they joined school clubs, activities, and ath¬ letics, and decided that this place was not so bad after all. Two terms slipped by. But before entering the ranks of the junior class, the group glanced back in time to recall the memories of their sophomore year, because that was the year that was! 1963 brought more security, yet bold reality to the eyes of Central’s juniors. These students were now assum¬ ing posts in student government, becoming active club members, and avid fans at athletic events. Reality came with facing the fact that the Main Street Universiy would not win the Southern Tier Conference championship, but satisfaction was close at hand with a basketball crown. College catalogues tumbled from lockers as they planned ahead for the application season. The junior year tested the true academic ability and will power to study because it was probably the hardest and most important as far as colleges were concerned. But one day the world seemed to stand still. All of America wept and nations paid tribute. The President of 106 E. Isaacson, Girls’ Sergeant at Arms; N. Merz, Vice President; C. Eldred, President; D. Nider, Girls ' Treasurer; E. Robinson, Boys’ Treasurer; Not pictured: B. Berry, Secretary; E. Petras, Boys’ Sergeant at Arms. the United States was dead. Shocked students on the go everywhere paused to eulogize the young Martyr—father image of so many teens. In history class it was difficult enough to comprehend the reasons for assassinations of Presidents in the past. For the incredible event to occur in our very own lifetime caused a striking setback. Participa¬ tion, responsibility, achievement, disillusionment, tragedy, and encouragement were all a part of that eleventh year. For the junior class, that was the year that was! A new year, the final year, loomed ahead. The very same students who had been so unappreciated such a short time ago now assumed school leadership. They had matured. They were ready to carry personal and group responsibilities. Many decided which college they wished to attend, although it is unfortunate for the students that some of the colleges were not of the same mind. Those who preferred to take the responsibility of a job journeyed to the employment office to begin their life’s work. They realized that their high school record would reflect on the quality of work they produce. Applications, college boards scholarship forms, and interviews preoccupied many seniors. Graduation pictures, notables, class officers, Senior Day, and midnight cram¬ ming sessions were steps leading to the same door. Before that door could be opened, there had to be a key. I would like to present a key to every graduate in order that each boy and girl can open his door to the future. Each key is different in that the notches profile each individual’s character. Success may have 156 meanings within this class alone. Success may mean an achieved goal, security, power, or prosperity. Above all, success is happi¬ ness. I hope that my fellow graduates, as well as their parents and future graduates, recall bright memories of the past three years, because those were the years that were! Class Scientist: Gail Shulman 127 A1 Penna, President In spite of many doubts, near-failing grades, teachers’ criticisms, and other deterring factors, our mammoth class of over 300 people will manage to graduate from Central this June. We are even so distinguished as to have a National Merit finalist, Rosemary O’Neil, in our midst, as well as many Letter of Commendation winners. The ranks of Honor Society were swollen with our members including the first juniors to be admitted. The guiding lights of the organization included the following: David Goldstein, president; A1 Penna, vice-president; Nancy Jo White, general officer; and Lois Kaminsky, secretary. This year Central sent twelve eager debaters to the Youth Forum at Harpur. Tom Berry, Paul Breslin, Sue Folejewski, David Goldstein, Judd Griffin, Peggy Keane, Joanne Martin, Jeff Mullens, Tom Muller, Janis Paushter, Dale Thomas, and Dorothy Triffo ably represented their Alma Mater while they proposed solutions to the world’s problems. Several outstanding athletes at Central have done much to bring recognition to our school in sports circles. 128 Paul Breslin is generally acknowledged to be the” Central track hero, although Mr. Sasinek’s new breed, the cross¬ country runners, covered themselves with glory this year. Another star athlete, Tom Meade, industriously set about breaking every swimming record in sight. Once again our basketball team proved to be one of the best around the area. Mike Costello was the dynamic ball handler of the team. Unfortunately graduation will usurp Mike Sheehan and Bart Henke. Cheering both bas¬ ketball and football teams on to victory were the varsity cheerleaders Janie Berka, Mary Berry, Linda Brown, Mar¬ sha Brown, Jean Howard, and Kathy Vavra. These many events were chronicled by the two great literary publications of Central, the Panorama Annual and the Pan News”. The yearbook under the editorship of Linda Rozen, and co-editor’s assistant, David Goldstein and Tom Muller, carried on the traditional contest for under the leadership of editor Steve Frolow. And, once journalistic supremacy with the newspaper, which was more, the custom of interchangeable photographers was observed being chased down the halls by various staff editors of both publications. Another esteemed literary organization in Central, Lit Club, reviewed American short stories, and inevitably discovered the wonderful possibilities of some other study in literature. Musically speaking, Central had a prosperous year. The orchestra, which is losing such virtuosos as Sue Fole- jewski, the concert mistress, plus Chris Gruber, Carol Van Wormer, Coretha Van Why, Carmen Swoffer, and Mary Lou Triffo, took honors in the annual orchestra contest. The band, too, is relinquishing many distinguished members, among them Eric Waters, drum major, Rhoda Azersky, Dale Thomas, Lou Sebesta, and Frank Iacovazzi. Varsity Choir must also lose seniors like Pat Valada, Edie Davenport, Sally Griffiths, and Frank Orzelek. 1965 was a political bonanza for our class. Such worthy public servants as Mike Costello and Judd Griffin cap¬ tured the presidency of G.O. in the fall and spring terms, respectively. Other political offices that were occupied by members of our class were Vice-President, Linda Rozen; Secretary, Alexia Mitrus; and Treasurer, Kate Madigan. Key Club continued its valuable service to the school under the leadership of Tom Muller. Members Ron Arias, Craig Singer, Jeff Mullens, Kenny Cohn, Mark Kaufman, Chris Grubei, Jeff Bernstein, and David Gold¬ stein will prove to be a distinct loss to the club. This was the year that was: the year Miss Holleran’s tests became even more unpredictable; the year Mr. Sasinek put trivial” little things on his tests; the year that Mr. Vavra assured his classes that physics was the best course you ’ll ever take;” the year that Mr. Shriber gave one of his students a 100” on the history Regents; the year that Mrs. Nezelek urged her girls on to victory with the cry, C’mon, you retards!”; the year the AGIC book cost seven dollars. Folk music was very big at Central, the leading ex¬ ponents of it being Alex Huppe and Sally Griffiths. Beatlemania also swept a large part of the student body, as evidenced by suspicious hair-dos sported by some of the boys (and girls, too). Undoubtedly, the three years we’ve spent at Central will be remembered by most of us. We took the bad with the good, the disappointing with the exhilarating. There are people and places we will cherish; some things that we will regret. Still, we have all undergone a kind of metamorphosis that has made us older and, we hope, wiser. Some of us will go on to college; others of us will go out into the workday world; some of us may remain undecided. But all of us will occasionally and even fondly glance back at our Central years and find a lasting satis¬ faction in what we have accomplished. Linda Brown, Secretary; Cathy Vavra, Girls’ Sergeant-at-arms; Ginny Bliss, Vice-President; A1 Penna, President; Joe Keery, Boys’ Treasurer; Lori Schwab, Girls’ Treasurer, Paul Breslin, Boys’ Sergeant-at-arms. 129 PATRICIA ABBOTT Patti” Red Cross Alternate (4); Course: Commercial; My Favorite Teacher: Mr. Brooks: He is easy to get along with and a lot of fun.
