Major General Organization proj- ects included a campaign to bolster student sportmanship, plans to start a Russian Club, the sale of yearbooks by G.O. representatives, a stricter G.O. attendance rule, a new way of electing G.O. representatives, the sending of delegates to the Student Government local conference and the Elk's Club Leadership Contest meeting. With a deafening clang of the Key Club bell, Central's most active service organization comes to order in room 21 each Wednesday' noon. Above the clamor of numerous private conversations, President Don Muller, aided by Mr. Goosely as faculty advisor and Vice-President Steve Abramson, Secretary Dave Moyer, and Treasurer Mike Melamed, usually manages to see that concession stands and coat checks are manned, football programs are sold, or the annual car wash is carried out, the proceeds going to such services as the student hand book and special projects. 28 vw W 'WW x 15 if-k y-J RADIO CLUB J. This is the resting place of all weary Pan Annual editors and a share of their respective staffs. This year Jane Grace and Ed Lieberman took over as co- editors and masterminds of the group. Layout Editor, Carol Borelli, Art Editor, Mandy Conklin, Write- Up Editor, Mary Multer, and Typing Editor, Liz Borovicka usually are seen in a huddle planning in- dividual yearbook pages, attempting to add new elements of imagination and interest, and mainly trying to meet the deadlines. Senior Achievements Editor, Jean Gordon, Senior Photo Editor, Steve Barron, and Photography Editor, Bill Bloomquist, can be found in the deluge of candid shots, formal photos, and achievement sheets that would support any bonfire for weeks. Alone in the corner is Business and Advertising Editor, Ed Tanenhaus, desperately trying to make ends meet and sending out threatening notices to those who have procrastinated in seeking ads. At the front desk is the faculty advisor, Mr. Abraham Bernstein, who keeps the Annual running as smoothly as possible and adds an element of humor to the staff. Together this group puts out your annual yearbook, always looking for improvement . . . and, of course, customers. Pep Club, advised by Miss Rose Marie Torto and under the leadership of Lesley ja- rema, President, Rhonda Min- colla, Vice-President, Terry Romagnoli, Secretary, Kathy Kane, Treasurer, and Ellen Byrnes, Attendance Officer, has done much during the past year to serve B.C.H.S. and to spark school spirit. Pep Rallies have come alive through the efforts of the members, who now sport Pep Club Badges and pinnies in the school colors. A Christmas sale of ribbons and bows has enabled the organ- ization to help needy families experience a joyful holiday. Central High truly is justified in boasting of contributions to morale by its spirited and active Pep Club. U Row 1: R. Walker, L. Blandford, C. Ryan, B. Silvanic, K. Kane, Treasurer, T. PUBLIC W The newly organized Public Speaking Club, under the ad- visorship of Miss Helen Foley, has been a great asset to its members. Past activities have included reports on potential colleges and assumption of publicity for the play 'Brigadoonf' Lesley jarema, Carol Marble, Kathy Kane, and Michael Cur- rent have served as president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer of the club. . The thespians among us at Central High find gratification for their talents by joining Cen- tral's Dramatics Club, which is supervised by Miss Helen Foley and governed by officers Michael Current CPresidentj, Mickey Morris fVice-Presiclentj, Mary Beth Hoban fSecretaryj, and Lesley jarema QTreasurerj. This year's Dramatic's Club sponsored Brigadoon, one of the largest musicals ever presented at Cen- tral. Peter Rafuse, Mary Reed, and Marilyn Grunert took the lead roles, Eric Joh was stage manager. A professional pro- duction of the musical was care- fully observed by the members of Dramatics Club when they journeyed to New York City to see a stage production on February 1 of this year. Curtain fApologies to Shake- spearej Yes, comrades, that's what goes on the second and fourth Monday of every month in the school term. The members of Honor Society must have a 4.0 average besides being all-round students. You find Honor So- ciety members ushering at assemblies, sitting at the information desk fMain corridorj, and assisting in the cafeteria. Not only do they run assemblies for honor graduates and induct new members, they also assist at Convocation Awards and graduation, sponsoring several awards. This year, the Constitution was amended by the Society's members. Each term a member welcomes the 10B's and discusses scholarship with them. And you can bet your last doubloon that it's an honor to be in Honor Society. 42 HO GR SOCIETY l Rau' 1: C. Marble, M. Multer, V. Griffith, L. Walter, P. Lampman, J. Grace, B. Lakin, P. O'Connor. Centralis Bulldogs, under Coach Deyo and' Assist ant Coach Tino, suffered one of their few losing seasons. The usual downfalls- I only three returning lettermen, penalties, fumbles, and interceptions-seemingly over A powered the team's will to win. The most memorable plays of the year wer john Bess's 87 yard kick-off return against Oneonta and Lou Zajicek's electrifyin, 81 yard dash against Vestal. Unlike the Varsity, the Junior Varsity teamls attack, directed by Mr. Frank LuVuol4 and Mr. john Lalley, led the Bullpups to an undefeated season and the conferenc championship. Mr. LuVuolo will replace, as head coach, Mr. Bud Deyo, who resignet before the last game of the season. The student body at Central High wishes t4 express its thanks to Mr. Deyo for his many years of devoted service. SWIMMING Central's swim team, coached by Mr. Henry Merz, had another swift-paced season, winning swim meets and perform- ing major surgery on the record books. jim McHugh, in the 100 yard breaststroke, and Bob Cook, fifty yard free-stylist, each broke records repeatedly. Final alterations on the books were: Bob Cook, 50 yard freestyle-school and city-24.1 seconds, pool-24.3 seconds. Jim McHugh, 100 yard breast- stroke--school and city-1:07.6g pool-1 minute, 9.4 seconds. Bob Butler, 100 yard butterfly-school and cif- -1:02.7. Nelson, McHugh, Les Major, Cook-200 yard medley relay-school and city-1:53.0. Cook and McHugh also set records in the Sectionals at Harpur College. In praising his Merzmen, Coach Merz commented, The boys all worked so hard, that the records had to fall. Ithaca was the only team to place a blemish on Central's record by beating our swimmers during the regular season and in the Sectionals. On the other hand, we sunk North three times. Yes, the season was a splashing success! BOWLING The varsity and junior varsity bowling teams rolled to another victorious season. Under the capable guidance of Mr. Gerry Dischinger, the Varsity pinned a 12-12 record, the third best in the conference. The junior Varsity placed second in their league with a respectable 14-10 record.. Gary Doolittle, Ed Tanenhaus, Cal Pettie, Dick Zwierzynski, and Tony Valada represented our team at the sectionals on March 23. This year's highlight was a post-season Bowling Banquet featuring the prominent Triple Cities bowling star, Phil Cleary. VOLLEYBALL Central's 1963 volleyball team, under the guidance of Mr. Bud Deyo, won 6 games, including a satisfying victory over North. The boys thoroughly confused the referees with their spectacular array of newly-invented shots. Notably ingenious were john Wales, Lou Levene, Ron Stirpe, George Roberts, Bruce Vogt, and Rick Gebler. 50 PORTS PICTURE BASKETBALL The varsity basketball team of 1962-63 was one of the real standouts in Central's sports program. The height of Tom Debnar, and Bob Mambo Quarterman, plus the agility of Coach Allan Cave's ball handlers, led by Don Andrejko, proved too much for Central's opposition. Central demonstrated this in its opener against Seton as Bob Quarterman compiled a career high of 27 points. The Varsity then defeated Maine-Endwell, Elmira Free Academy, Johnson City, Union-Endicott, Elmira South Side, Chenango Valley, and Vestal by comfortable margins. However, our winning ways were halted in back-to-back games with North and Ithaca. It was in the Ithaca contest that January grads Tom Debnar, with a game high of 22, Bob Congdon, and jim Phalen made their last appearances as Cavemen. Our strong bench, led by Fred Meagher, Rick Halter, and joe Gueindon, efficiently filled the vacated starting positions. The last game, a sixth consecutive win and a 60-58 squeaker over North, clinched the Triple Cities League Championship and the Eastern Division of the Southern Tier Conference. Upon the final buzzer, the team jubilantly raised Coach Cave to its shoulders. In recognition of his consistently excellent playing, Bob Quarterman was placed on the All-Star teams of both leagues. joe Tino's junior varsity team was not far behind the varsity's fine record. Led by Mike Sheehan, Chris Hartung, Joe Dolan, and Bart Henke, the Bullpups compiled an overall 10-6 record. TENNIS From time to time during the fair weather months, from March to june, Central's future Don Budges and Rod Lavers, could be seen at Recreation Park. Coached by Gerry Dischenger, the tennis team netted many victories. Several lettermen back from the highly successful 1962 season were: George Tate, Bob Ingells, joe Keane, and Perry Winston. BASEBALL The problem facing varsity baseball Coach Robert Sweeney this spring was that of building a winning squad with only three returning starters, Iohn Swistovich, Jim Demtrack, and Rick Halter. Last year's team completed its season in second place in the Triple Cities and Southern Conference with a fine 10-3 record. Center of interest last year was the performance of Robin Gardner, who pitched four complete games before giving up his first earned run. The word from Robin is that he's now with the Minnesota Twins' organization, having received a 310,000 bonus. Another recent Central standout, jim Greblick, led his Midwestern minor league in home runs and batting as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates' farm system. We can only wish Coach Sweeney and j.V. Coach David Stark much success in recruiting other promising prospects. GOLF Although the golf team lost three of its big starters from the 1962 conference championship team, the varsity found no trouble in assemblying an excellent starting five. Gary Goldstein, Pete Klingman, and Gene Kudges proved to be three of the top golfers in the Triple Cities area. Last year Central was the only team to have two home courses, Vestal Hills and Ely Park. This year, however, the golfers entertained most of their opponents at Vestal Hills alone. TRACK As a fitting climax to a long and grueling season, last year's track team sent Lou Zajicek, Dick Gillespie, Dick Tuttle, and john Sierzant to the State Sectionals at Schenectady. Under Coach Allan Cave, this season's track team produced even better results in both track and field events. We hope that the returning men in ,64, such as Dave Mack and Barry Winnick, will surpass the year's performance. 5I AR ITY FOOTBALL Row 1: P. Crunk, D. Kovae, J. Gulino, L. Zajicek, T. Lawrence, D. MCKn1Ior TWIRLERS Crisp new uniforms and straw hats added a spark to the Colorguard and Twirling squads as they performed proudly in the season's football games, parades, and competition. New routines included a Brigadoon sketch complete with flaming batons and Scottish dance. Kathi Chanecka, Mary Reed, and Karen Coen acted as captain, co-captain, and treasurer of the Colorguards. Nancy Merz and Pat Flanagan led the Twirlers. With pa- tience, humor, and sportsmanship, they brave na- ture's elements and the large, sometimes unruly crowds to keep the spark of school spirit alive. Liz Borovicka and Arlene Skala took charge as captain and co-captain during the football season, Carol Borelli and Ellen Byrnes led the cheers at basket- ball games. The squad's wide range of activities included dance sponsorships, the Southern Tier Cheerleading Competition, the cheerleading clinic, and the cheer- leading camp, attended by Liz Borovicka and Carol Borelli. A tip of the hat goes also to- the Junior Varsity cheerleaders, led by captain Pat Filan and co-captain Penny Stevenson. These girls offer important sup- port at Central's j.V. games. Mrs. Lillian Nezelek, capable advisor of both squads, acknowledges the girls' skill and effort by a system of well-earned award. W, Hn fV-- I Q f is f if f 1 SENIORS While walking up Main Street after the dance last Saturday night, I hap- pened to strike up a conversation with my neighborhood cronies. The talk drifted to our recent graduating class, famous for its humorous members, its own choir, and such notorious notables as jim Phalen. Yes, it seems such a short time ago that the walls of good old room 105 resounded with Noel and Silent Night. Even on Prom night, the self- styled Mitch Millers got in a tune or two. Remember the Prom? Even though our spirits were down after losing to North, we managed to crowd St. Mary's Hall for a wonderful Prom. And, hey, speaking of basketball, how about our two mid-year hoop stars, Tom Debnar and Bob Congdon. Tom was second string, S.T.C., and Bob received honorable mention. The last I heard, Deb was entertaining one or two very interested college delegates. Also, how about some of those nicknames we dug up like Cassanova Loco fSteve Laukoj and Dungi fBob Congdon . . . origin unstatedj. Remember the faculty massacre of such names as Spagnoletti, McConegly, and Aquiviva? There were light spots, too, like the great comedy team of Klink and Alexander, immortal for its antics in second period English and sixth period Physics. Gee, I'll never forget that Happy Physics Party . . . Our class also left an indelible mark on Harpur College. While the Advanced Study Group, with such students as Dick Berry and Dan Petras amazed the profs with their brain matter, Eric Joh and the other delegates to the Model U.N. Assembly made William Jennings Bryan sound like Harpo Marx. With graduation day coming up, some of our more restless fellow students began to throw parties resembling the Roman Arena at cleanup time. With a slate of student-elects like Phalen, Gillespie, Romano, Buchsbaum, Howard, Knapik, and Hathaway directing our political functions, we had no reason to anticipate a rocky termination of our high school careers. Our class also managed to pass on a sum of money as a gift to the school. There was a cloud in our sunny skies though: the tragic deaths of Arnold Lacey, Gary Lipshutz, and Richard Bobal in an auto accident. We dedicated a great part of our award and graduation exercises to their memories, and Honor Society presented a plaque inscribed with their names in fond com- memoration of its deceased members. Finally came Convocation Day and Graduation Night. John O'Brien of I.B.M. presented the uspeech of the day, followed by Mr. Helfer's presen- tation of awards. Some time later we walked out of B.C.H.S., many bound for college, others for work, and some who would return to P.G. The spirit of our school followed us then and will remain with us wherever we journey. 74 PRESIDENT james Phalen SENIOI OFI JA Ui i BoYs' SERGEANT-AT-ARMS I Barry Buchsbaum VICE-PRESIDENT Richard Gillespie I ASS SERS Y I963 SECRETARY Linda Romano GIRLS' SERGEANT-AT-ARMS Kathleen Knapik BOYS' TREASURER Norman Howard GIRLS' TREASURER Nancy Hathaway DOUGLAS ATKINSON Doug Industrial Management Day 1413 Commencement Usher 141, Courre: College. Remember the june graduating class and its eternal pursuit of knowledge? The bi-weekly trek to Harpur College was made by many of the class scholars. This Advanced Study Group offered a taste of everything from philosophy to the unique cafeteria cuisine. The annual Model U.N. Assembly found Mr. Shriber and a shady looking group comprised of Mike Current, Don Muller, Les Major, Lou Levene, Dave Moyer, joan Walls, Mary Multer and Val Griffith representing every faction from the Secretary General to the United States and Congo in long, but colorful, session. Honor Society inducted over forty from the class, giving the traditional recognition for their academic efforts. In addition to the customary services these members augmented the Society's constitution. And fun? There was plenty of it in i63. The cast parties of 'iBrigadoon became notorious along with Paul Goldwin, Pan Annual threw a Christmas party in 202 and introduced the coffee break to the Iowa Tests, the first Hnmmkab ceremony took place in the mobbed school cafeteria as a foreign Christmas carol sing echoed from its walls, and, above all, was the Senior Prom which undoubtedly tilted the earth's axis a bit. And how this class combined work and pleasure! Many long hours were spent and grey hairs earned by Mr. Clune and Miss Foley in the pro- duction of the smash hit, Brigadoon. Five new class stars: Mary Reed, Len Dorfman, Marilyn Grunert, Peter Rafuse, and, of course, jim Stevens-the BCHS answer to Shelley Berman, were introduced. Ability ran high in the june class, Bill Bloomquist was Merit Scholarship finalist, many members of the class received Regent Scholarships, Kathy Doyle, Alexandra Matiss, Sally Sheehan, and Peggy Sullivan won blue ribbons and keys in the Art Scholarship Contest, and fifteen able minds entered the Math Contest. Very worthy of mention are the rugged class athletes who enhanced our football, basketball, tennis, and baseball teams., Class additions to the school ranged from the Russian Club, under the able Mr. Moore, to the less known but elite Varsity Choir Folder Club and the Black Shamrocks of Israel, a unique offshoot of Brigadoon. Pete Nelson, president, Lou Zajicek, vice-president, Carol Borelli, secretary, john Swistovich, boys' treasurer, Mary Reed, girls' treasurer, Al Marean, boys' sergeant-at-arms, and Laurie Lawson, girls' sergeant-at-arms, were the officers elect. And, of course, there was the Society for the Eradication of Dogma-Birds led by Ed Tanenhaus, Ed Lieberman, and Wm. Bloomquist. Each of these clubs led the class through numerous activities. Countless are the memories of 1963: Mr. Vavra's physics class which implanted the wisdom of so many laws , Mme. Hind's French class which n'a pas su grand 'chose' as it gagged on paint fumes in 301, and Mrs. Moore's chansons and round table discussions were just a few of them. Yes, 1963 was a golden year.
