we LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT FIRST ROW: Mrs. Edna G. Hinds, Mrs. Ruth A. Lowe, Miss Rera B. Taylor. SECOND ROW: Mr. J. Richard Harfigan, Mrs. Gina Moore, Mr. John R. Lannon. ABSENT: Miss Loretta Murphy. For students who would like to visit far- away places, Central High offers a foreign language program which is very adequate. Under the direction of Miss Loretta Mur- phy, three years of French and two years of Spanish are taught. Both follow the same pattern. As it is necessary to speak these for- eign languages fluently, conversations are held, and plays are staged. At various times throughout the school year the students learn French or Spanish folk-songs and Christmas Carols. To understand why certain conditions exist in the respective countries, the histories and the geographies are studied by means of maps, outside reading, and elementary history books. During the hrst year, the student is introduced to the grammar of his subject and the pronunciation of the langauge. In the sec- ond and third years, the main concentration is given to oral reading of French or Spanish books. Dictations are read in class so that the student may recognize spoken French or Spanish. Latin is one of the.most valuable subjects a student can take. It provides him with a Hrm foundation of any foreign language and also with English. Furthermore, through studying Latin, a student learns how to ex- press himself well. Knowledge of this lan- guage is accomplished while reading about Caesar and Cicero, and while studying the grammar.

MATHEMATICS The Math Department, headed by Mrs. Blanche Beers, offers a varied curriculum. This program of mathematical study pre- pares a student for higher education. The courses offered are plane and solid geometry, the latter of which is taught in the Spring term, advanced and intermediate algebra, which can be taken for one or two terms depending upon the student, and trigonometry. The department offers courses such as trig and solid geometry to the stu- dent who requests this higher type of math. The purpose of these courses is to give the above-average student a chance to acquire additional knowledge. Central High stu- dents should feel privileged to have such a fine Math Department. 2HL5+30,. SCIENCE The science courses at Central, which are electives, attract a large number of students. The two courses which are of- fered are Modern Chemistry and Physics. These are usually taken in the junior and senior years. Besides receiving instruction in regular classes, the students also enjoy laboratory periods. There, they can experiment with different substances and receive first-hand knowledge as a result of their discoveries. This year a modern Physics laboratory was built with many conveniences. Among its new devices was a panel installed by Westinghouse, which can change AC to DC current. The Science Department is headed by Mr. Donald Roehm, who is affectionately known as Doc Roehm to his students.
