Th courses are flexible enough to fit the student who is talented, as well as the one of average ability. General Art acquaints the student with many art materials and the great works of artists, past and present. The student's knowledge of the principles of design helps him in choosing his clothes and furnish- ings. There are specialized courses for those who plan a career in advertising, art teaching, costume design, or industrial design. All art students learn to work in a variety of mediums. Among these are water colors, poster paints, pastels, pen and ink, and oils. There are such crafts as modeling, carving, and stencil- ing. At Christmas time the students make decorations for their homes. Under the very able direction of Miss Grace Holcomb, Centralis Art Department is truly an important part of the school. Miss Elizabeth Stanford One of the most interesting, informative and worthwhile classes offered at Central is health, a one semester course required of all students in their junior or senior year. The lively classes in this subject are conducted by Miss Anna Bloom and Mr. Robert Baudendistel. In their classes, Central students acquire sufficient information to give them a lasting knowledge of what makes our body tick. They become acquainted with both the mental and physical structure and function of the human mind and body and how to care for it. Good grooming and healthful nutritional habits are also introduced into the course. Although every student must take this course, there are no regrets, for it enables the student who is aware of good health habits a chance to lead a much happier and more health- ful life. Miss Grace Holcomb HUME ECGNUMICS Hmmmm! What wonderful odors are emanating from the Central High home economics room? It is probably the girls experimenting with some appetizing dish or perhaps the boys trying their masculine hands at some culinary creation, such as pizza pie or spaghetti. Whatever it is, it is certain to be a success under the capable supervision of Miss Elizabeth Stanford, the home economics teacher. This course includes not only how to prepare meals, but also what to prepare, so as to make the meals wholesome and nutritious. Besides cooking, fundamentals of interior decorating, budget planning, child care, good grooming, and etiquette are on the agenda for future homemakers, and a wide variety of useful information is absorbed by the pupils. STANDING: Mr. John Lalley, Mr. Robert Sweeney. HISTURY DEPARTMENT History, a required subject at Central includes the study of both World and American History. A World History course is given to the students in tenth grade, which covers the beginnings of civilization from primitive man, and includes all of his developments and accomplishments. A study of the different countries of Europe, their beginnings and developments, is also made. The Dark Ages, the Renaissance, the Reformation, and the wars of European countries are some of the topics studied. At the end of the year, a regents examination is taken by the students. American History is studied in the junior year. This course is aimed at giving the students a better understanding of their country. The Colonial Period, the America Revolution, the Con- stitution of the United States, and our relations with other countries of the world, are only a few of the various topics studied. A school examination is given at the end of the year. In the first part of the senior year, students complete the study of American History. More emphasis is placed on events which have occurred during the last 50 years. Current events are also topics of discussion. A final review is made, and then the students take a two-year state regents examination. DEPARTMENT The Commercial Department supports a wide held of opportunities for those students who are interested in the business world. Miss Alice Lowry supervises this department. The commercial students have four various branches to select their courses from. These include Secretarial Practice, which differs from the others as it requires shorthand, Oiiice Practice, which is similar to Secretarial Practice, except shorthand is not required, Bookkeep- ing, which trains the pupil for office work, and General Business, which caters to those who have made no specific plans after graduation. Central High is very fortunate to have the valuable equipment with which the students can obtain the practice, essential in their careers. Some rooms are provided with calculators, add- ing machines, electric typewriters, dictaphones, and duplicating machines, while three rooms are completely furnished with typewriters. Not only the students who are looking forward to a business career benefit from the com- mercial course, but also the college-minded students. Central offers the regular typing course or else a special course for seniors. The student taking this receives no grade or credits but is aided in typing research papers, which are required in twelfth grade literature class. f 1 . Central's course of study is well-rounded to include all phases of English. In all classes we learn to appreciate the great beauty and wisdom of some of our finest literature, past and present. This includes the reading of short stories, plays, novels, essays, poetry, and biographies. Twelfth grade Literature is a course especially designed to cover these lields. The sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are taking General English also have the opportunity of studying the extreme importance of a broad and effective vocabulary and ac- quire a solid foundation in the application and use of English grammar, spelling and composi- tion. A special course in Dramatics is offered to those students who are interested in acting, directing, and costume design. The English Department, headed by Miss Avis Balcom, strives to teach students a love and respect for the English language. We are deeply indebted to our capable English teaching staff for giving us an excellent and informative introduction to this invaluable course. As bread is the staff of life, so English is the stat? of our education. . 0 eovle E.xerciS25 tis 1 is wGYr P . h md' 411195 Q Ererndlw gram Hee l3 IRST ROW: Miss Muriel Dando, Mrs. Blanche Beers, Mrs. Edith Calvert, lr. This program of mathematical study pre- pares a student for higher education. The courses offered are plane and solid geometry, the latter of which is taught in the Spring term, advanced and intermediate algebra, which can be taken for one or two terms depending upon the student, and trigonometry. The department offers courses such as trig and solid geometry to the stu- dent who requests this higher type of math. The purpose of these courses is to give the above-average student a chance to acquire additional knowledge. Central High stu- dents should feel privileged to have such a fine Math Department. 2HL5+30,. SCIENCE The science courses at Central, which are electives, attract a large number of students. The two courses which are of- fered are Modern Chemistry and Physics. These are usually taken in the junior and senior years. Besides receiving instruction in regular classes, the students also enjoy laboratory periods. There, they can experiment with different substances and receive first-hand knowledge as a result of their discoveries. This year a modern Physics laboratory was built with many conveniences. Among its new devices was a panel installed by Westinghouse, which can change AC to DC current. The Science Department is headed by Mr. Donald Roehm, who is affectionately known as Doc Roehm to his students. we LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT FIRST ROW: Mrs. Edna G. Hinds, Mrs. Ruth A. Lowe, Miss Rera B. Taylor. SECOND ROW: Mr. J. Richard Harfigan, Mrs. Gina Moore, Mr. John R. Lannon. ABSENT: Miss Loretta Murphy. For students who would like to visit far- away places, Central High offers a foreign language program which is very adequate. Under the direction of Miss Loretta Mur- phy, three years of French and two years of Spanish are taught. Both follow the same pattern. As it is necessary to speak these for- eign languages fluently, conversations are held, and plays are staged. At various times throughout the school year the students learn French or Spanish folk-songs and Christmas Carols. To understand why certain conditions exist in the respective countries, the histories and the geographies are studied by means of maps, outside reading, and elementary history books. During the hrst year, the student is introduced to the grammar of his subject and the pronunciation of the langauge. In the sec- ond and third years, the main concentration is given to oral reading of French or Spanish books. Dictations are read in class so that the student may recognize spoken French or Spanish. Latin is one of the.most valuable subjects a student can take. It provides him with a Hrm foundation of any foreign language and also with English. Furthermore, through studying Latin, a student learns how to ex- press himself well. Knowledge of this lan- guage is accomplished while reading about Caesar and Cicero, and while studying the grammar. ,A f A if ml f '51, -Q51 Q 5-S. 0 '- i 'L-5 ... N ,, Q, S A. Those who are know that the fine staff makes up tempting lunches for the students who wish to buy their lunch. lf you ever forget your lunch-stop in for sandwiches, salads, or a hot plate, which are sold at very reasonable prices. Many students also benefit by using the cafeteria as a noon study hall, while others prefer to use it to sit and converse with friends. The one place at Central everyone appreciates is our cafeteria. Have you ever wondered who diligently keeps our school spotless? Ever wondered who daily sweeps the floors after careless students who drop paper? All the credit must go to one group-our custodians. They do everything for us, from filling inkwells and filing locks off lockers that wonft open, to mowing the lawn and keeping the grounds picked up. Early in the morning they come to open the school doors and get the building heated. This friendly group also takes care of our scattered belongings such as boots, books, coats, hats, scarves, and jewelry. Many thanks are in order for the eflicient custodians who help to make our building a pleasant place. CAFETERIA CUSTUDIANS s 'X K. x ,IV ft 1 1 Y x Mr. Andrew Harris DRIVING Driving, now under the able leadership of Mr. Andrew Harris and Mr. Gerald Dischinger, has become a very popular course for all Centralites. The members of this class meet twice a week for lecture periods and movies on the fundamentals of driving, and twice a week for actual practice in the driver train- ing car. The lectures are under the direction of Mr. Dischinger, and the actual driving is taught by both men. The intricacies are discussed and cleared up during Mr. Dischinger's lecture periods. Although driving today seems comparatively easy, modern cars and equipment have made it very complex. Even though developing driving skills is very important, the main idea is to develop safe driving attitudes. ' , 'FVWIV Mechanisms of machinery Who has the Toni? You S22 - - - The Industrial Depart- ment of Central High School, located on the ground lloor, gives many young people the training necessary for securing a job soon after graduation. The courses offered by our Industrial Department include machine, auto, and electric shops for boys, and beauty culture for girls, all, taught by very capable in- structors. Upon graduation these students are qualified to enter the industrial world and fill roles of usefulness. QQEQ GENERAL URGANI ATIUN Under the capable leadership of David Gouldin, presidentg Margaret Turner, vice-presidentg Sharon Gardner, treasurer, and Susan Campbell, secretary, the Fall term of General Organization has been very active in managing many Central High affairs. With Mr. John Gable as its advisor, the Council, composed of delegates from every homeroom, met on alternate Monday afternoons to plan such things as the Papa Central Dance after the Central-U. E. football game. Delegates had charge of selling football tickets in their homerooms. G. O. also had charge of decorating the Christmas tree, traditionally placed in the main hall. Perhaps its most important duty was the management of Central's financial affairs and in the presentation of paid assemblies. FIRST ROW: Mary Pholen, Linda Smith, Joanne Liciandrello, Alline Clark. Issued four times a term, the Pan News covers every phase of student and faculty life at Central. Miss Mary Holleran, faculty advisor, helped keep the staff's spirits high with her cheerful enthusiasm. Miss Holleran certainly deserves a great deal of credit for all the hours of her own time which she spent throughout the year, helping the editors meet their deadlines. Editor-in-chief for the year was Rosemary Petrick, who often burned the midnight oil to make each month's issue a success. Her tasks also included the layout of the paper and the writing of editorials. Susan Campbell was the feature editor. She took care of the special interviews with people such as the Four Freshmen, Dick Deacon, the actor, and the former Lord Mayor of Dublin, Mr. Robert Briscoe-all of which appeared as features in The Pan this year. Her department also took care of Inquiring Photographer, Alum Notes, Super Seniors, Career Corner, Class Will, and Class Prophecy. Mary Meagher, our efficient news editor this year, headed a staff of busy Centralites. Mary saw to it that each new happening in the school was written up and presented to the student body in the form of news articles. In charge of the advertisements, which help to finance the paper, was Ira Levine. Ira and his energetic staff were kept busy each month solicit- ing ads. This experience cultivated in all mem- bers of the staff salesmanship and ability to per- suade. Girls' sports were reported in the Fall by Margaret Turner, and by Nancy Kudgus in the Spring. These girls also wrote the Sports Low- down Column. Boys' sports editor was James Cusick, who did an excellent job covering Central's varsity, junior varsity, and intramural sports. Jim also entertained us with his column, Sports High- lights. Mary Ann McConnell, circulation manager, had the duty of seeing that the paper was adver- tised throughout the school and that all home- rooms, advertisers, and other schools received papers. Art work in the Pan News was the work of the students themselves. Margaret West headed the art staff in the Spring and Fall. Nancy McCambridge, advertising layout edi- tor, made sure that all ads were neatly arranged, and sometimes Nancy had to write ads herself. Fred Moriarity's Notes on Jazz, endeared to every Centralite a little boy name 'fSam who represented jazz. Dick Matties entertained us throughout the year with his informative column, Pa Central Sezf, The photography in this year's Pan News was exceptional. We were fortunate to have David Gitlitz as our photography editor during both the Fall and Spring. Much credit should be given to the typing staff, headed by Joyce Struck, and our enterpris- ing business manager, Teresann Joseph. These girls really outdid themselves. Whether planning a career in journalism or not, experience on a paper like The Pan devel- opes initiative and creative ability, which will prove valuable to all, no matter what their plans are for the future. Very few stu- dents realize the amount of work and time spent throughout the whole year to produce our fine yearbooks. The capable editor-in-chief of this year's Annual is Cornelia Lacey. It is her responsi- bility to see that the various departments of the Annual are fulfilling their obligations. Patricia O'Neil, in charge of the write-ups, sees that arti- cles are assigned and completed at the appointed time. The typing editor is Johanna Bender, who AM-Wei. sees that all the articles are typed accurately. Each page is skillfully arranged by the lay-out editor, Susan Buckley. The picture editors, Pamela Rogers and Kathy Bender, see that group pictures, action shots, and senior pictures are taken. Robert Timson is in charge of the art work. One of the most necessary activities at Central is the Student Staff, which is composed of students who devote one period each day to assist the teachers, counselors, and other various department heads who are constantly kept busy. These students perform miscellaneous jobs, some of which are running er- rands, correcting papers, taking care of the hostess desk, and helping in the li- brary. All of these tasks would otherwise consume much of the faculty members' time. In order to become eligible for a Student Staff position, the student must till an application blank, and should have passing grades in order to devote the time necessary to be a good Student Staff member. The students who are finally selected are directed by Mrs. Houpis. Under her capable leadership, the mem- bers go about their work zealously and enthusiastically and have a friendly and lively spirit while on the job. This is very encouraging to the other students, because it makes them want to become a part of this organization. Participa- tion for two terms enables a student to receive an award towards Honor Society. STUDENT STAFF All in a day's work One of the most active and worthy organizations at Binghamton Central High is the world-wide Junior Red Cross. This organization's main purpose is to help less fortunate people. This active group, now under the leadership of Miss Reta Taylor, sponsors an annual Red Cross Drive, which proved to be very successful again this year as in previous years. Each semester new oliicers are elected. As a club project, the students have knitted an afghan which was sent to a nearby-veterans' hospital. As another project, this organization gave a turkey to a local family for a Thanksgiving Day dinner. This year they had two projects The 'e '9 under way. The first was the decoration ge e' Y of a Christmas tree at Halem's Nursing Home. Here the name of each member was taped on a Christmas ball and hung on the tree. The second was the decora- H tion of a Christmas tree at the Broome County Hospital on upper Front Street. This is truly an organization which should be commended for brin in s irit and cheer to people who are Eessgfoliftu- JUN' S nate than ourselves. As their officers the members of the band chose Terry Cribbs, president, Fred Moriarity, vice-president, Pat Carvalho, Karen Smith, and Dorothy Susko, librarians, and Duane Grippen, social chairman. During football season, the band performed half-time shows at all games. Several different shows were presented by the band with collegiate know-how. At the North-Central game, the band took all the fans on an excursion to Recreation Park. The trip included a ride on the see-saw and a slide, with the color guards doing the sliding. The band formed an ice cream cone and sang the Ice Cream Song. The finale was a ride on the merry-go-round. Spectators at the Vestal game were delighted with the presentation, Visit to Paris. The band went into formations such as the Eiffel Tower, a French taxicab and the Arc de Triomphe while they played appropriate songs with each of these. Le fin was performed in a circle with the French can-can being done by the drum major- ettes and the color guards twirling hula hoops. One of the other delightful shows was the Holiday in Mexico. In order to give such en- joyable entertainment, band members worked hard during noon hour and after school, march- ing and practicing on the field. The band played at pep rallies at the Court- house after the games and led the student body down Court Street on Thanksgiving Eve, the night of the tiger-hanging. The band also was on hand for our pep assemblies-to aid the cheer- leaders and to add to the pre-game excitement and school spirit. After football season, members prepared for a more serious vein of music as they entered the concert season. They took part in the NYSSMA State Contest and upheld their A6 rating. VARSITY CHUIR The Varsity Choir is one of Central's most active and well known organiza- tions. There are always a great number of students auditioning to fill the vacan- cies of graduating students, but only the best are given the opportunity of join- ing our famous choir. This proves the very high caliber of talent which is used. The sixty-five members, under the direc- tion of Mr. Thomas Clune, are often giving concerts for various service clubs of this area. In our most successful musical, f'Carousel, the entire choir actively participated to make it a most memorable event. Each Christmas their beautiful caroling is heard in the halls, this is one of the most wonderful tradi- tions Central has. This past year their activities included televising and broad- casting carols on one of our local sta- tions. Singing at graduation each term is one of the things which makes it a memorable occasion for each graduate. Practicing seventh period every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, they perfect many difficult and beautiful pieces. The group elects its own oiiicers each semester. Through the fine spirit and talent of this group, Central is truly well repre- sented. One of Binghamton Central High Sch0o1's most encountered before he was married. Vivian Thompson J unauuancs aus O rf prominent clubs is Dramatics Club. On Wednesday afternoons in Room 1, under the able leadership of Miss Helen Foley, members can be seen learning the 'gtricks of the trade. They are not only instructed on acting, but also on make-up, scenery, and back-stage production. Formed to pro- mote and strengthen school spirit, Pep Club cer- tainly sparks a great deal of lively enthusiasm into our athletic contests. Members try to reach their goal by selling blue and white shakers at football games, and by choosing certain members to dress in the bulldog costume. Pep Club also has formed a card section, giving quite a boost to Central's spirit at games, since it is the only one -and certainly a good one-in this area. The girls also traditionally present the mock football game skit before the North-Central game, as well as promoting the success of color day. Gay no- tices of approaching sports events are put on studyhall blackboards by Pep Clubbers to encour- age Centralites to attend the games and support the teams. Before the U.-E. football game, Pep Club, together with G. O., sponsors a night pep rally, complete with the hanging of the tiger to signify the slaughter of U.-E.'s team the next morning. During the Christmas season, as part of their charity project, the club delivers baskets of food to needy families in the area. Under the supervision of Mrs. Dorothy Hamilton, the 97 members are headed by oilicers who are elected at the beginning of each term. Pep Clubbers, under a newly devised point system, are working hard to maintain high school spirit here at Cen- tral and to encourage the students to cheer vigor- ously our teams to victory. They have been most successful in achieving their goal. PEP CLUB At last, our awards! Congratulations to all the new officers ' A , F, ? , Q53 fi? QE? JUNICR SCIENCE CLUB The principal objective of Central's Junior Science Club is to further interest in science and the everyday applications of scientific knowledge. One of the chief sources of information in the club is lectures. The members have been both enter- tained and informed by the many talks which they have heard this year on such subjects as photogra- phy, astronomy, and satellites. They also have taken a number of tours through local places of interest and have seen iilms on several phases of science. The members are advised by Mr. Robert Baudendistel, the club's faculty sponsor. SENICR SCIENCE CLUB Here at Central High our students are given an excellent opportunity to exercise their scientific ambitions in their own organization-Science Club. This group, under the capable direction of Mrs. Mary Petro, advisor, carries on many activities, the highlight event being an annual trip. This year the group went to New York City. Of course, the club cannot carry. on extensive experiments, but it does serve as a stimulus in order that the members may read and study more thor- oughly the topics brought up at the meetings. Though off to a bad start this year by losing the first two swim meets, they got back in the groove and have shown their might by going on to victory for the completion of the season. Ably coached by Mr. Merz and with Co-Captains Dick Helfer and Bob Brick, these boys have shown their skill in such strokes as the butter- fly, breast stroke, back stroke, diving, and of course freestyle. Several of our boys have broken records and, even better, broken their own. Two of these are Bob Brick and Ralph Kaye. While everyone is home eating or watching TV, the swim team is diligently practicing for their next meet. The team became television stars on Jim Adlesoifs sports program. On' this show, films and personal interviews with the boys were presented. Al- though this hard-working squad isn't as loyally supported as the other high-ranking spectator events here at Central are, these Head ,im ambitious boys have helped to keep up Central's well known reputation in sports. Mr. Henry Merz, who has been coaching our track team for 24 successful years, did another fine job this season. Besides competing with ditlicult opponents, this year's team had other obstacles to face. Since MacArthur Field was severed by the highway a few years ago, it was not completely adequate for daily practice and meets. Therefore, the team practiced in Central's gym, in the parking lot, and at Recreation Park. All of their meets had to be held at unfamiliar tracks. Also, since track has not been publicized as much as some of the other sports, it was very hard to encourage enough students to attend the various events. Events this year included the mile run, 220 yard dash, 440 yard dash, 880 yard dash, 180 yard hurdles, discus throw, shot put, high jump, broad jump, and pole vault. Awards were presented to those students who, in the opinion of the coach, contributed the most to this sport, according to their points earned, attendance at the practices, and the value of Qggh their services. The number of awards given was left to the discretion of the coach. Q . 2 V ,,.. ..- T..-fr -W . The all-American thirst for a good game can be quenched by watching our boys play home games at George F. Johnson Park. The teams start practice after March 2 in the gym but play outdoors as soon as weather permits. Although many Varsity men were lost through graduation, the Bulldogs still had a win- ning season. Returning lettermen are Dick Bot- nick, Dick Fahrenz, John Fish, Al Gillis, Tom Vill, and John Whalen. The J. Central's volleyball team, under the able and excellent leadership of Mr. John Lalley, worked extremely hard this year to keep up their past undefeated record. From December until March these boys displayed their outstanding teamwork at their weekly games. The entire squad consisted of about 30 well trained players, including four spikers and two setters for each team. Congratulations are indeed in order for the spikers and setters', who have carried the school name and tradition to greater heights than even before. The prime ingredients of any cham- pionship team are certainly present in this vic- torious group. Clear thinking, fine sportsman- ship, and honest effort have been combined to produce this corps of loyal Centralites. A Ny 4 2 X' iff! i ' . . g Q81--me -.. . , . P' 'mv :G ....3.4 .1 fi' .. UUWLING Bowling is a sport which is growing ever more popular among both older and young peo- ple. Central is proud to be able to answer this demand by providing a Varsity and a Junior Varsity bowling team. The Varsity bowling team, under the capa- ble direction of Mr. Frank Clark, had a very successful season. This year, Ron Simkulet and Richard Lesay led the team as top men. The league, which is composed of five teams, includes Chenango Valley, Union-Endi- cott, Vestal Central, North High, and Johnson City. Among last year's bowlers who returned again are Richard Moore, Ron Simkulet, and Ronald Burke. Many new faces also appeared on the team and often helped to lead Central on to victory. Our Junior Varsity team, also under Mr. Clark's leadership, also had a fine season this year. Mike Cooper and Gary Vanderhaar have the highest averages on this team. Bowlers also include George Shay, John Christian, Robert Kocan, Barry Kolfman, Robert Zeminek, and David Sedor. With the successful record of this Junior Varsity team, we are all looking forward to seeing many of these bowlers on next year's Varsity bowling team. 102 FIRST ROW: Mr. Henry Merz, Ted Alexander, Mike Smllnak, David Mason, Edward Sleeper, Mr. Robert Deyo. This not only includes swimming well, but also the knowledge of how to approach and help drowning victims. For this reason, Central presents lifesaving courses for both boy and girl students. The boys' instruction is capably presented by Mr. Merz. In order to qualify for this course one must be 16 years old or a junior in high school, have the ability to swim one-fourth of a mile, tread water for three minutes, swim three body lengths under water, and have some knowl- edge of the use of various stroks. The boys meet three times a week for in- struction. A typical lesson includes an oral quiz ceeding night, a land demonstration of what is to be done in the pool, and finally the actual practice in the water. They also watch special movies donated by the Red Cross. When the course is completed, the boys will know what to do for a struggling victim, plus useful information about handling small craft. Upon passing the course, the boys receive emblems which can be worn on bathing suits. ui: 6. -. They had a good reason for strenuous practice because the teams they played against were North, Elmira Free Academy, Elmira South Side, Oneonta, Ithaca, and Norwich. BLUCK-8-CLUB Block B Club is becoming increasingly active under the capable leadership of Mr. Henry Merz, who is the adult advisor. Boys who have earned a varsity letter in some sport, including football, track, baseball, golf, basketball, swimming, tennis, and bowling are eligible for membership. These boys are pro- ficient in one or in several sports and have taken an active part in our wide athletic pro- gram. On the agenda for this school year were two successful fund-raising dances in the Fall and Spring terms, and a trip for the J. V. foot- ball team to the Syracuse-Boston game at Syracuse, with Block B helping to defray the expenses. This club offers awards, based on a point system, to all boys participating in the noon intramural sports program. The points accumulated through the year are to- taled, and trophies are awarded for first place, second place, and third place. This year the club donated to the school a plaque on which the name of the boy most valuable to Central in the eight major sports will be engraved each year. GIRLS' ATHLETIC A550614 Tl0N The Girls' Athletic Association at Central consists of a group of about 30 girls who are under the direction of Miss Margaret Frear and Mrs. Kaye Russell. They meet everv other Thursday noon in the gym to plan dillerent sport events. To belong to this organization, a girl lirst has to take a written test on the rules of dif- ferent sports. If she passes this, then she takes a physical test which means doing push- ups, hand ball feats, and other endurance skills to see how much strength she has. Other than these tests, a girl must possess at least one minor sports award before she is a real mem- ber of G. A. A. This year G. A. A. sponsored a dance after a basketball game, and a volleyball play day in which girls from Central, Johnson City, Union-Endicott, Vestal, and Chenango Valley participated. A plan was also put into action whereby girls from these same schools were able to use Central's pool Monday nights after school. The girls certainly enjoyed an exciting and prosperous year. 1 l GIRLS' INTRAMURAI. SPURTS Almost any night after school one is likely to find a crowd of girls playing an intramural sport. They not only have fun and learn good sportsmanship, but they are also building up points toward an athletic award. When a girl receives 16 points, she becomes eligible for an award. From fall to spring Central girls can participate in sports such as hockey, soccer, volleyball, basketball, tumbling, softball, tennis, badminton, synchronized swim and life saving. The capable super- visors for Girls, Intramurals are Miss Margaret Frear and Mrs. Kaye Russell. ARCHERY FIRST ROW: Evelyn Gladd, Faye Goga, Patricia D0ll0hU9r Diane Stanek, Mary Ann Finch. CULUR GUARDS TWIRLERS Our school's excellent baton twirlers demonstrate their ability at all our football games. They lead our band and the color guards onto the football field in their gay costumes. After school this group practices often to perfect their routines. Janice Peterson, the head of the twirlers, has come out on top at many national baton twirling contests. These girls are always a welcome sight at our games. The color guards march ahead of our band at football games carrying the flags of our school and of our country. This cheerful marching group may be seen during even the coldest weather. Hurrah for the girls who guard our colors, blue and white!
