The industrial department or Central, located on the ground floor, gives many young people the vocational training neces- sary for securing a job soon after graduation. Courses in machine, auto, metal, and woodshop for the boys are taught by capable instructors. For those girls who wish to become beauticians, excellent courses in beauty culture are offered. Upon graduation these students are qualified to enter the industrial world and fill roles of usefulness. - J x 'lIi'.3Z.'I'7 f HQ Z 1 Q Industrial In our times when math and science are being stressed, Binghamton Central's Mathematics Department, under the lead- ership of Mrs. Blanche Beers, is meeting the challenge. This program offers an ex- tensive course of study for the prospec- tive scientist or technician. Since mathe- matics is now even more important in our modern-day life, many students take ad- vantage of this nne department' and major in math. The program .offers courses in plane geometry, trigonometry, and ad- vanced algebra. Intermediate algebra is offered in either one or two terms, and solid geometry is offered each spring term. Richard Hartigan, The English department stresses the im- portance of knowing our language. Along with compositions, grammar, and vocabulary development, a study of plays, essays, short stories, and poetry is made by sophomores and juniors. Advanced Literature or General English is offered to seniors. This spring something new was added. Dramatics may now be taken as an elective in addition to the regular English course. Upon graduation a student will find a knowledge of English invaluable to him. F iiilalx Eifihii f . - r . All of the students at Central have at some time or another benefited from the use of the school library. Such a facility close at hand furnishes students with an opportunity to gain useful information for their school sub- jects. If at lunch time a pupil must study for an afternoon class, the library provides a quiet place for work. During the first week of school, sophomores are taught how to use the library correctly. Courses are avail- able in chemistry and physics, these classes are highlighted by laboratory periods in which many fascinating experiments are performed. Under the able direction of Miss Katharine Miller this course covers typing, shorthand, business law, business arithmetic, bookkeep- ing, business machines, and other es- sential knowledge needed commer- cially. In addition to students entering business, those pupils who plan to enter college will find typing and shorthand very helpful. A special course in typing is offered to those not registered in the commercial courses. Because of the expert train- ing, Central students fmd excellent opportunities in the business world.
