Mr. Helfer has proven himself extremely capable in carrying out the numerous duties which his post entails. One of Mr. Helfer's major responsibilities is that of making certain that the Binghamton schools meet the standards required by New York State. They must 'prepare students properly for entrance into college and the business or industrial World. Mr. Helfer fully understands the problems of students, teachers, and par- ents. He has done much to better our schools and to develop them into the vital, respected institutions of which our community is so proud. 6 Z The pupils of Binghamton Central High School are very fortunate in having Mr. Springmann at the head of their school. Mr. Edward T. Springinann, a graduate of Albany State Teachers College, Sees to it in every way possible that we get a well rounded education. He is help- ful and understanding to every student. He is not only ready to help pupils with their education but is present at every basketball and football game, cheering Central on to victory. He also trans- ports the Cheerleaders to some of the games. The students of Central High are very grateful to Mr. Springmann for doing such a tine job. 7 r Counselors 8 Left to right: Mrs. Mary Brown, Miss Lela nl. Odoooooooo Qqcoooooo oqooooooo 000000 A7 Mrs. Houpis Secretaries An indispensable part of Central is the very capable secretarial staff which attends to the clerical work connected with running the school. This means answering phones, printing the daily bulletin and special notices, handling all correspondence, ordering supplies, and running the bookroom. Work in the main office is competently handled by Mrs. Edna Mc- Davitt, Mrs. Jennie Herrick, and Mrs. Mar- jorie Hebbard. The secretaries in the coun- selors' offices are Mrs. Florence Houpis and Miss Margaret Linehan. Attendance records are taken care of by Miss Catherine Keenan and Mrs. Mary Brown. The health room is under the supervision of Mrs. Mary Donahue. Mrs. Genevieve Driscoll has charge of the bookroom, while our school accountant, Miss Lela Rogers, keeps our finances straight. The history department headed by Miss Mary Gillespie strives to acquaint us with the peoples and cultures of the world, and to teach us the duties of responsible citi- zens in a democratic society. Sophomores study world history, while in the junior and senior years students trace the growth and development of our own country. Seniors pursue current events in our own country in addition to completing their study of American history. Il Cl V I 1 r '-ii' Q Knowledge of foreign lan- guages is becoming more essen- tial every day. To cope with this need Central offers modern languages such as French and Spanish. Latin is also taught to the students. Under the direc- tion of Miss Loretta Murphy these language classes not only teach the native tongue, but also stress the history, back- ground, customs, and current aifairs of the country. To be- come better acquainted with the language which is being studied, outside reading, oral plays, and conversations are frequently used. lt is of great advantage to all pupils to take at least one foreign language. 1- -l A ., . sl l Seated: Miss Ethel Houck, Mrs. Mary Petro, Miss Mary Hinckley, Mrs. Constance Flanni- gan, Miss Helen Foley. Standing: Mr. Abraham Bernstein, Miss Mary Holleran, Mr. john Moore, Miss Avis Balcom, Miss Helen Cusick, Mr. 1. Richard Hartigan, The English department stresses the im- portance of knowing our language. Along with compositions, grammar, and vocabulary development, a study of plays, essays, short stories, and poetry is made by sophomores and juniors. Advanced Literature or General English is offered to seniors. This spring something new was added. Dramatics may now be taken as an elective in addition to the regular English course. Upon graduation a student will find a knowledge of English invaluable to him. F iiilalx Eifihii f . - r . All of the students at Central have at some time or another benefited from the use of the school library. Such a facility close at hand furnishes students with an opportunity to gain useful information for their school sub- jects. If at lunch time a pupil must study for an afternoon class, the library provides a quiet place for work. During the first week of school, sophomores are taught how to use the library correctly. However, when any student needs aid in locating materials, Miss Sara Burns and Mrs. Doris New- comb are always ready to help out. Miss Sara P. Burns, Mrs. Doris Newcomb Mathematics Mrs. Blanche Beers, Mr. John Gable, Miss Muriel Dando, Mrs. Edith Cal- vert, Mr. William Hogan, Miss Virginia johnson. The industrial department or Central, located on the ground floor, gives many young people the vocational training neces- sary for securing a job soon after graduation. Courses in machine, auto, metal, and woodshop for the boys are taught by capable instructors. For those girls who wish to become beauticians, excellent courses in beauty culture are offered. Upon graduation these students are qualified to enter the industrial world and fill roles of usefulness. - J x 'lIi'.3Z.'I'7 f HQ Z 1 Q Industrial In our times when math and science are being stressed, Binghamton Central's Mathematics Department, under the lead- ership of Mrs. Blanche Beers, is meeting the challenge. This program offers an ex- tensive course of study for the prospec- tive scientist or technician. Since mathe- matics is now even more important in our modern-day life, many students take ad- vantage of this nne department' and major in math. The program .offers courses in plane geometry, trigonometry, and ad- vanced algebra. Intermediate algebra is offered in either one or two terms, and solid geometry is offered each spring term. In health classes taught by Miss Anna Bloom and Mr. loseph Vavra, students learn the physical and psycho- logical functions of the mind and body. They also become acquainted with good grooming and nutritional habits. Each student is required to study healthg since it is important to everybody, no one regrets this. If a 'student knows this sub- ject well, he can live a much happier and healthier life. Miss Grace Holcomb Drivin .. ua-sf Miss Elizabeth Stanford, Mrs. Lillian Perkins. Central High's Art Department offers a storehouse of wealth to anyone interested in an art career. The first course, general art, in- troduces the student to all phases of art. A stu- dent wishing further in- struction may enroll in costume, advertising, de- sign, or any other ad- vanced course. The en- tire art department is under Miss Grace Hol- comb's capable instruc- tion. One of the easiest and most convenient ways to get places is by driving. However, in order to drive, one must have a license. Central offers a very thorough course in driving which is ably taught bv Mr, Andrew Harris, The main aim of this course is to help stu- dents become safe and more skillful drivers. Everyone taking a home economics course benefits from it. Central students are offered the chance to participate in an up-to-date homemak- ing program. Future homemakers learn how to plan and prepare nu- tritious meals, as well as fundamentals of interior decorating, p 1 a n n i n g budgets, etiquette, child care and good grooming. Male students may also take this course, but they concentrate mainly on cookery. Cafeteria Row 1: Mrs. Euleta Hayes, Mrs. Reva Andrews, Mrs. Margaret Williams. Row 2: Miss Mildred Morgan, Mrs. Dorothy Ramage. Most of the students at Central never stop to think about who is responsible for the cleanliness of the school building. The persons who keep the bells ringing, ink- wells filled, floors swept, lawn mowed, and the grounds picked up are the custodians. They open the school early every morning, and attend to heating the building, in the evening, they close the school. Many thanks to the efficient custodian crew for their excellent and Centralites all agree that when it comes to good eating and a pleasant atmosphere, our cafeteria can't be beaten. Here a full course meal is oFfered each day including milk, a main dish, a vegetable, and dessert. Many a la carte dishes are also available, such as salads, soup, sandwiches, and ice cream. If they wish, students may bring their own lunches and purchase only milk. Many thanks are due the cafe- teria staff for providing the student body with such tasty and enjoyable meals, and for making lunchtime so pleasant an interval between morning and after- noon classes. ustodians Bottom: Mr. William Ford, Mr. Thomas Connelly, Mr. Paul A. G.O. was responsible for securing permission to have the Vestal football pep rally, and was in charge of the burning of the U.E. tiger before the Central- U.E. game. The Council upheld the annual tradition of the Papa Central Assembly on the day before Thanksgiving vacation. During the fall term both Science Club and Pep Club presented revised constitutions to G.O., request- ing the right to give awards towards Honor Society to their members. These were voted upon and passed. Besides all this, G.O. sponsored the dances after the football and basketball games. The highlight of this feature was the Victory Dance afterlthe North- Central football game. One of the most eagerly awaited assemblies at Central is the election of General Organization of- ficers. Everyone enjoys the speeches given on behalf of each candidate. The winners of the spring elec- tion were: Joseph Mankus, president, Patricia Den- niston, vice-president, Kathleen Rozmerski, secre- tary, and Gary Wilson, treasurer. Each of these officers received an award for school service. The faculty advisor of G.O. was Mr. john Gable. This February for the first time G.O. sponsored a King and Queen Dance. F all During the Fall term the Panorama newspaper did an es- pecially fine job of covering school events and activities: Under the guidance of Philip Pavlik, its editor-in-chief, and Miss Mary Holleran, its faculty advisor, the Panorama staff produced four excellent issues sparkling with originality and filled with a variety of topics: fashions, sports, feature columns, hobbies, alumni notes, editorials and current events. Sunday Press editors, jac- queline Twining and Teresann joseph, deserve a great deal of praise for representing our school so well on the Sunday Press high school page. Pan members devote much time to work on the paper. However, the many enriching experiences and personal satis- faction which they derive, more than compensate for the hours given to the task. The Fall staff proved exceptionally capable and was in no small way responsible for the paper's success. Editors included Bonnie Levene, news editor, Sharon Donnelly, feature editorg Carolyn Wernz, art editor, Lee Wagener and Patricia Denniston, sports editors, and Ann Jarvis, Katherine Truesdell, and Mary Peck, advertising editors. Spring Centralites are indeed fortunate in having for their studen voice a newspaper as fine as the Panorama. The'paper,,under th very capable guidance of Miss Mary Holleran, is published fou times each term. During the spring term Bonnie Levene served as editor-in chief. She was ably assisted by her editors and staff. Thanksrt their combined efforts the Pan achieved -an exceptionally hig degree of excellence, and was again acclaimed one of the bes high school newspapers in this area. The Panorama covers every phase of Central's life. The new staff reports on all school activities, assemblies, club project: and coming events, while the feature staff is responsible for th many columns and various feature articles found throughot the paper. All art work appearing in the paper is done by the ai group. Both the girls' and boys' sports pages are prepared' ll the sports staffs. Advertisements from local business establisl ments are solicited by the advertising committee. Pan members take great pride in the newspaper,-Ldevoting.muc time and effort to their work. One of the busiest organizations in this school is Student Staff. It is a group of stu- dents who give up one period a day to serve as'staiT assistants. They are assigned to teach- ers, assisting them in many time-consuming tasks that the faculty would ordinarily have to do. These include filing information, check- ing papers, recording marks, running errands and greeting visitors to the school. Anyone who has a study hall every day may join this valuable school organization. Participation for two terms enables a student to receive an award towards Honor Society. 67 From the first crisp school days in the fall to the hot bright days of early June, members of the Pan Annual staff are kept constantly at work preparing Central's fine yearbook. Room 325 proves a scene of continual bustle and activity as the editors go about their business under the watchful eye of Miss Grace Hogomb, faculty adviior of the dParii Annual. d utting out a year ook is in ee an enormous un ertaking. AP A- There are numerous small details to be attended to, and coopera- tion and organization are a must if the project is to result in success. The theme, which is kept secret until the Pan Annual comes out in June, is determined by the editors in October. Following this decision the lay-out department undertakes the difficult and demanding task of planning and co-ordinating each page. The photography staff goes to work taking and developing the many required action shots, while the business department solicits advertisements, handles subscriptions, and manages financial affairs. The write-up staff assigns all articles to be written, while the art staff is responsible for the large amount of decorative work which fills the pages of the yearbook. The picture staff schedules all school organization pictures, while the typing staff types all articles. Joan Space, this year's editor-in-chief, heads the Pan Annual group, supervising all phases of this work. The pictures on the study hall blackboards were drawn by the members. An- other important function was that of helping the art department 'by tiling pic- tures, sorting art materials, keeping paint-sets filled, and doing other odd jobs. These were efhciently carried out by presidents Betsy Ross ffallj and Sally Clark Cspringj, under the direc- tion of Miss Grace Hol--k comb. Key Club Key Club is without a doubt one of Central's most active service organiza- tions. This group is sponsored by Ki- wanis International and supervised .by Mr. Bernstein. One of the chief func- tions of Key'Club is the operation of the coat check-room. Money raised from the various activities is used to benefit the school-for example, tinancing the pro- gram of speakers on various vocations who are brought to our school. It not only performed for the Honor So- ciety and Honor Graduate assemblies, but also played at both the january and june commencement exercises. The orchestra joined with the choir and band to present Central's annual Night of Music. In May this group participated for the first time in the orchestra contest held in Binghamton. These musicians devote much time to their organization. They rehearse three times a week in class, while full rehearsal is held at noon each Mon- day and Wednesday. However the hard work and effort which Central- ites put into this organization is well worthwhile. With a love and appreci- ation of music and a desire to ac- complish their very best, they have attained a high degree of proficiency, and have afforded much pleasure to their listeners. This year, under the very capa- ble leadership of Mr. Bernard Shiffrin, the band outdid itself, surpassing even it own outstanding record. During the fall term the marching band accompanied our football team to every game, performing pre-game and half-time shows. Following the football season, the concert band commenced rehearsals. In February the band presented an assembly at West junior High School, and in May it collaborated with Central's two choirs and the orchestra to produce the highly successful 'Night of Music. Also in May the band participated in the New York State Band Contest held in Bing- 1amton. It is small wonder that band members derive so. 'nuch pleasure from this organization and are so proud io be a part of it. A gf ? '? Q - , ' 1, H'- MX fu, ., . ' 2. This re- markable team was coached by Mr. Robert Bud Deyo who certainly deserves great credit for such an outstanding record. Nearly all of Central's games were char- acterized by little action on Central's part in the Hrst half, while in the second half, no time was lost collecting the points. This made the games even more exciting than usual. Central's team could not have succeeded without the work of its invincible line. Line Coach john Lalley did an excellent jobIof training these players. Central's average per game was 30 points, while they held their opponents to an average of 7.75 points per game. These boys maintained high academic standings in addition to devoting many hours to football. Out of 35 players a substantial number were honor students. During the sea- son our team was also complimented on the fine sportsmanship displayed in the games. 80 Central Z6-North Central 27-E.F.A. Central 19-Vestal Central 41-U.E. Their schedule included games against johnson City 120-127, Windsor Q39-OD, Elmira South Side C54-OD, Union Endicott 125-OJ. The two games they lost were against Vestal C0-75 and North C13-195. During the season they scored a total of 151 points, while they held their opponents to 38 points. For this season they scored 23 touchdowns, Thirteen of these . . were made from scrimmage, tive from passes, three as a the result of intercepted passes, one from a kick-off return, and one from a punt return. The team began practice in early April. The boys first per- formed calisthentics ond other exercises in the gym. Because MacArthur Field has been severed by the new highway the boys once again lacked adequate space and were forced to hold all meets away at Vestal, Elmira, johnson City, and Union Endicott. Life Saving As in past years the boys senior life saving course offered at Central received a large and enthusiastic turnout. ln- structed by Coach Henry Merz, the boys Worked out twice a week, receiving a thorough grounding in all life saving skills, including the handling of small craft and the use of various life saving devices. Those who passed the final prac- tical and written tests received their well earned badges. Tennis, anyone? Central High certainly answered that call. Prospects for coach john Gi1ley's Bulldog tennis squad proved extremely good. Their returning lettermen included Bruce Bateman, Dave Tomik, Roger and Charles Wales, john Ship- tenko, jim Cusick, Bob Gahagan, and Ciar- rett McCutchan, Practice and games were held at Recreation Park. Their matches were against Oneonta, Norwich, Ithaca, North, Elmira Free Academy, and Elmira South Side. Bottom: james Chalmers, Bruce Bateman, Coach Henry Merz, Robert Gahagan, james Gilroy. They are coached by Mr. Frank Clark, who also teaches mechanical drawing here at Cen- tral. He reports that of all the boys on each of the six teams ftive boys per team plus extrasj, Ronnie Simkulet, who aver- ages one hundred seventy-one, and Rich- ard Nemconsky, bowling one hundred sixty-nine, chalked up the highest scores. Other participants averaged between one hundrd fifty and one hundred sixty. So come on out for bowling, you athletic boys l Golf is offered every April. Although as many as fifteen or twenty boys may turn out, they are eliminated un- til only the best remain. Central High's home course is at Ely Park. Our golf schedule included tourna- ments with Union Endicott, Iohnson City, Chenango Val- ley, Notre Dame of Elmira, Ithaca, Waverly, and Cort- land. Mr. Frank LoVuolo, who was coach, was very pleased that the new boys iad scores in the 70's. Ron Simkulet, Dave Cohen, Ira Levine, Mike Husar, and Gary Ellis returned to the squad from last year. This season certainly brought vic- :ory to Central! Varsit Volleyball The Central Volleyball Team, under the able and excellent leadership of Mr. john Lalley, really worked hard this year to keep up their Fine record of eight successive undefeated seasons. From December to March these boys could .be found in the gym practicing every night after school. They displayed their outstanding teamwork at their weekly games. The entire squad con- sisted of about twenty well trained players including four spikers and two setters for each team. Varsity letters were awarded to most of the volley- ball champs. To become a member, a girl must have one minor sports letter and must pass a physical en- durance and a written test on sports rules. This year G.A.A. sponsored an invita- tional basketball meet for all the area high schools, and members sold tickets for the annual synchronized swim show. The 'presidents were Margaret Napier Cfallj and Sharon Russell fspringj.. it ,, fig ti, .rj , if 4 , a i i tt r 96 4 3- sei . .W Girls, Intramurals Under the supervision of Miss Margaret Frear and Mrs. Kaye Russell, the girls' intramural sports program is arranged each year. During the fall months the girls play hockey, soccer, and volleyball, which are followed by basketball. Baseball is also a favorite sport. This is played in the spring of the year. Every year a synchronized swim class is started. Here the girls learn how to perform gracefully in the water and how to swim to music. Along with synchronized swim, there are junior and senior life saving classes. By maintaining perfect attendance in these sports, girls are able to earn points toward awards.
