Both chemistry and physics classes are well-liked, be- ing highlighted by laboratory periods where many interesting experiments are conducted. For a science major, ninth grade biology is also required. It offers a wide, advanced course of study for the prospective college student or the student especially interested in mathematics. Besides courses in plane geometry and intermediate algebra, classes in trigonometry, advanced algebra, and solid ge- ometry are available. lntermediate algebra may be taken in either one or two terms, while solid geome- try is available only in the spring term. 1+1-:gg Row 1: Miss Muriel Dando, Mrs. Blanche Beers, Mrs. Edith Calvert. The courses offered by our in- dustrial department inelude mach- ine, auto, and woodshop for boys, and beauty culture for girls. Students graduated from these courses face gratifying careers as machinists, auto mechanics, car- penters, painters, and beauticians. We are offered two years of Spanish and three years of French and Latin. Fourth year Latin is also available if enough people wish to continue it. Under our capable teachers many students leave Central speaking French or Spanish Huently, andfor having a good knowledge of Latin. Sophomores study what people all over the world have said and done. In the junior year, the growth of our country and the problems faced by our forefathers are examined. Seniors con- tinue to learn American history, but also study current events. -, . 'I fi ...L W. Not only is it well- stocked with sufticient reference material to satisfy the most studious person, but it also provides a convenient place to study during noon hour and after school. Stud- ents intent on completing a term paper or catching up on world events are greatly aided by our two helpful librarians. The English department, headed by Miss Avis Bal- com, strives to-teach the students the importance of our language in today's world. The sophomore and junior years include the study of short stories, plays, essays, biographies, novels, poetry, grammar, and, composition work. Seniors are offered a choice of general English, dramatics, or advanced literature. A student taking these courses will find they will help prepare him for his future career, by improving his technical English and expanding his literary knowledge. HE LTH Although it is but a one-semester course, the ma- terial which the students cover in our health classes is sufficient to supply them with a lasting knowledge of what makes us tick. Facts concerning both the physical and mental structure of the human body and how to care for it are taught by Miss Anna Bloom and Mr. Joseph Vavra. The class is considered essen- tial to the extent that it is a required subject for graduation' from Central. Miss Anna I. Bloom, Mr. Joseph Vavra Row 1: Mr. Henry Merz, Miss Margaret H. Frear, Miss Nancy Rippon Standing: Mr. Robert A. Deyo THLETIC Athletics are an important part of every school, and Central is no exception. Under the direction of a very capable staff, students at Central are offered an opportunity for participation in innumerable ac- tivities. Among the varsity sports are basketball, football, volleyball, baseball, swimmingj track, and tennis. Those who are not quite ready for the var- sity teams have a chance to improve their skills on 1.V. teams, Students interested in occasional par- ticipation have the advantage of many after-school intramural teams. These sports include touch foot- ball, basketball, swimming, synchronized swimming, ping-pong, junior and senior lifesaving, tumbling and apparatus, and gymnastics. The purpose of Central's athletic program is to encourage sportsmanship while having a wonderful time. ART Our art depart- ment is a store- house of wealth for anyone interested in art. The first course is that of general art: As the name indicates, this course introduces the student to the various types of art and gives him a general appreciation of itz If the student wishes further art training, he may enroll in the second and third year courses. These are more ad- vanced and furnish students with 'T a good background in art. Under the leadership of Miss Grace Hol- , comllltv, this department is really a l wort whi e one. It has aved the road . , for many an art careeriwhy not for M155 Grate Holcomb yours, too? DRI NG Driving, under the able leadership ot Mr. Andrew Harris, has become a very popular course for- Central's seniors. The members of this class meet twice a week for lectures and movies on the fundamentals of driving, and twice a week for actual prac- tice in the driver-training car to develop safe road hab- its. Although driving seems comparatively easy, modern cars and. equipment have made it very complex, These intricacies are dis- cussed and cleared up during Mr. Harris's lecture periods. Even though developing driving skills is very .im- portant, the chief purpose of the driver- training course is to promote safe driving attitudes. Mr. Andrew Harris H0 C Central s home econon1ic's depart- ment, headed by Mrs. Lillian Perkins and Miss Elizabeth Stanford, offers a very complete homemaking program to both boys and girls. Home nursing, child care, etiquette, inter- ior decorating, and good grooming are taken up by both the boys' and girls' home- making departments. However, the boys concentrate more on cooking such things as pizza pies and spaghetti. The excellent equip- ment and leadership, combined with a group of really interested students Seatedg Mrs, Lillian Perkins, helps to make homemaking a popular 13 Subject. Row 2: Miss Mildred Morgan, Mrs. Dorothy G. Ramage. Boy, am I hungry! Well, let's go to the cafeteria and get a really good meal. This is a typical conversation in the halls of Central at ll :37 each noon hour. Located on the basement floor, the cafeteria is one of our most popular places. Some bring their own lunch and just buy milk or soup, while others prefer the nutritious and reasonably priced plate lunch. See you in the cafeteria! Custodians Row l: Michael Hudak, William J. Ford, George A. For- SYCY, ThOm3-S C011U6lly, Charles Whitcomb. .Thorough and efficient seem to be the only adjectives capable of describing the work of our custodians. One must realize the full scope of their duties to know the merit that they deserve. Not only must they be responsible for taking care of many emergencies, but they must also clean the building regularly. Our custodians have performed their jobs amaz- ingly wellg let's do our job and appreciate them for it! Other officers were Ruth Sam- uels, Vice-President, Nancy Hankin, Secretary, and Thomas Keating, Treas- urer. It was an active term in which Cen- tral played host to the area schools for the Interscholastic Student Council Con- ference. In addition to holding the regu- lar meetings, it sponsored the traditional series of dances after the games during the basketball season. Also, the super- vision of the showcase window in the main hall was a project of the organiza- tion, The Council upheld the annual tra- dition of holding the popular Papa Cen- tral Day assembly on the day before Thanksgiving vacation. It was featured by a mock G.O. meeting in which the delegates tried to solve the problem of getting Pa Central to attend the Central- UE. game. Several skits were also pre- sented by the more ambitious students. 3 Row 1: Elaine Singer, Frances Snider, Margaret Napier, Nancy McCambridge, George Rosefsky, Ruth Samuels, Gloria H k' M 'ld E l t . , . A I t l ...vw The Panorama newspaper has a new faculty advisor this year, Miss Mary Holleran, who has given fine di- rection and general assistance in publishing the paper four times a term. Also, with the combined efforts of some of our able and spirited Central students, each edition has been filled with a variety of topics, such as sports, editorials, current events, fashions, hobbies, the latest news, information on various careers, and alumni notes. Each week two members of the staff present ar- ticles and pictures for publication on the Sunday Press High School Page. The fall editor, Philip Sharpsteen, and David Colman, the spring editor, deserve a great deal of credit for so capably fulfilling the requirements of their position. They have done an excellent job in maintaining the standards set by their predecessors. Each staH member of the Panorama has a respon- sibility to help make each new issue better than the last. The advertising staff collects advertisements from local businesses. The art staff does the decorative work. The news reporters write concerning assemblies and cur- rent affairs. Features such as Super Senior, Career Corner, Hobby Horse, Fashion Corner, and the In- quirmg Photographer make the paper complete. With all the student participants working hard to set forth an excellent school publication, we have a newspaper of which we can all be proud-the Panorama. This announcement is welcomed by some Centralites as a chance to take part in various group pictures. When the yearbooks appear in June, these same students leaf the pages fever- ishly to see their pictures. To many, this constitutes the Pan Annual, but to the ambitious Pan members of Homeroom 325 it is something much more. These behind-the-scenes- workers choose their theme in October. The layout depart- ment then plans each page. The write-up, art, and picture departments compute the areas of their respective divisions and assign articles, art work, and schedule pictures. The photography staff takes and develops the action shots, the typists take care of the typing requirements, and the busi- ness department manages the indispensable advertisements, pays the inevitable bills, editor-in-chief supervises and handles subscriptions. The everything, straightens out de- tails, and acts as leader in the entire operation. As the work continues, a typical scene finds the photog- raphy editor insisting that 2' 7!8 x 1' 1!8 is just too small for the swimming picture, a girl demanding to know why her write-up can't contain 124 words instead of the assigned 119, and the Pan Annual advisor, Miss Grace Holcomb, vainly calling for attention, causing a casual observer to question the sanity of the inhabitants of 325. As the spring deadline draws near, tension mounts, and everyone rushes to complete last minute details. When the yearbooks are finally handed out in june, the worn-out Pan Staff members breathe a sigh of relief and relax at last. is 14 Avi' . we ,Ready ' ' CWQN 4. First of all, there is the elective course, Public Speaking A and B, taught expertly by Mr. James P. Kavanagh. This fascinating subject improves poise, personality, and diction, and covers all important phases of speech education such as voice, story-telling, declamation, phonetics, public ad- dress, and parliamentary procedure in debate. A unique part of the course is Opportunity Day, wherein the motivation for speaking is developed by opportunity rather than by requirement. A second phase is the five official contests open to Centralites. After the foot- ball season, their attention turns to concert music, and the march- ing band transforms into a concert band. The main events in the spring term are the annual band contest at Ithaca and the Night of Music, a combined effort of the band, both choirs, and the or- chestra. The first step is to choose the selections which will be played at the two events. Then, for the next five months, the band practices Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday noons to perfect the numbers. In the first week in May, the band journeys to the contest at Ithaca College, a well-known music school..The band, directed by Mr. Shitfrin, then performs for the judges, who grade the performance as they see nt. The mark has usually been a high A or sometimes a B. The members often present solos or ensembles before the judges who in turn rate them. Students find great enjoyment in taking part in this organization, which offers awards for Honor Society. FOOTB LL Central's varsity football team should be very strong next year, judging from the ex- cellent performance of our junior varsity foot- ball team this year. Of the total number of games played, the Central Bullpups lost only one, an exciting contest with Elmira Free Academy, in which the final score read El- mira-21, Central-20. In league play, the team, coached by Mr. Frank LoVuolo, was' unde- feated. Their schedule included games against Vestal C27-75, Johnson City C27-75, Chenango Valley C26-135, Union-Endicott C35-125, Greene C27-125, and North C40-125. This string of victories was marred only by the one-point loss to EFA C20-211. During the regular season of seven games, the boys scored a total of 202 points, with an average of 29 points per game. They completed 30 touch- downs, with an average of 4 per game. 1 In League play, the boys scored 129 points, averaging 32 points per game, and made 19 .L touchdowns, averaging 5 each game. Seventeen of the season's touchdowns were made from scrimmage, 6 from passes, 4 as the result of intercepted passes, 2 from punt re- turns, and 1 from a kickoff return, for a grand total of 30 touchdowns. Although each touchdown is the result of teamwork and cooperation, the boy actually scoring' the points deserves special recognition. The season's touchdowns were scored by Rich- ard Colangelo C10 touchdownsj, David Tay- lor UD, Stewart Walls C6D, Barry Schumann C3D, David Gouldin CZD, Robert Kurey CU, and John Hagopian CU. BASKETBALL 89 This year's Junior Varsity basketball team, the Southern Tier Conference Champions, was coached by Mr. Alan Cave, a former Central basketball star. There were many reasons why the team had such a successful season. First of all, it had a good coach who was able to keep the spirit of the players high. He was well liked and the boys played hard to win for him. Another reason for the teanfs success was that they had a good bench. There was a large squad with many top-notch players--so many that there was no regular starting live. A third reason, perhaps the most import- ant, was that the J.V.'s displayed excel- lent team work. They worked together splendidly, all scoring equally well. The high scorers usually had 15 points, while the others were close behind. During the first half of the season, the home court was a jinx. The Scranton game went into overtime, while the game with I.C. went into double overtime. In both cases, Central managed to come out on top. In the j.C. game, Eugene Augus- tine made the winning basket. With a 13-0 record, and leading the Eastern Division, we played the Western Division leader, Ithaca, which was also undefeated. This game was our first loss. After coming home, the team clinched the Eastern Division championship, but then dropped two games. Luckily, they were back on their feet for the champion- ship game with Ithaca. This time Central did the slaughtering. This made us the Southern Tier Champions. Congratula- tions for a fine season! This year intramural wrestling was added to the other eight intramural activities offered to boys at Central. Since there were not enough boys to complete a var- sity wrestling team, the sport was confined to an intra- mural basis, and they engaged in no interscholastic com- petition. The group, under the direction of Mr. Robert Deyo, learned the fundamentals of holds, escapes and tim- ing of matches. Our school has available both capable in- struction and ample equipment, and it is hoped that -the wrestling team of next year will be even better. 132, WRESTLI G Row 1: William Marean, Garreth Gobel. The season opened with easy wins over Auburn C64-131, New Hartford C65-125, St. Francis C70-71, and Scranton Central C47-303. Although Wyoming Seminary gave the Bullfish a harder time, we came out on ton with a score of 47-30. At Colgate in the relay competition we again placed first. Our next meets were with Rome Free Academy C58-191, Baldwinsville Q61-161, Scranton Tech. C70-72, and Peekskill C47-30j. Fi- nally, we routed North C61-16D. Our ace diver, George CSonnyJ Hetrick, finished the season undefeated. Congratulations to a great team and their fine coach, Mr. Henry Merz! Go! 'I' RACK This year's track team, although hindered by the fact that all the meets were away from home Cbecause of the new highway run- ning through MacArthur Fieldj, did as Well, it not better, than last year. Mr. Henry Merz, the team coach, depended a great deal upon William Harrison, Freeman Hightower, James Finch, Marcello Tino, George Lutzic, Roman Utyro, Michael Bedosky, and Joseph DeDio, all of whom were on the team last year. The first official meet was on May first, but early in April, the boys began to meet in the gym where they did calisthenics and other exercises designed to keep them in condition. When the weather was better, they worked out in the parking lot and still later, used what is left of MacArthur Field. Occasionally they ran from Central to Recreation Park. The track and field events which our team participated in in- cluded the high jump, the broad jump, pole vaulting, the shot put, discus throwing, hurdles, running the mile, running for 880, 440, 220, and 100 yards. Characteristics of Central High's track team were excellent sportsmanship, good team work, and hard work. fm 'H Row l: Freeman Hightower, Gerald Carey, Robert Wagener, Richard Lynn George Lutzic, William Harrison, David Metz, Robert Brick. Later in the season varsity practice was held daily at Recreation Park, where all Centralls home games were played. The season consisted of twelve games which were played against North, johnson City, Vestal, Union-Endicott, Cortland, Ithaca, Elmira South Side, and Elmira Free Academy. Although Central was unfortunate in losing Donald Campos, David Davenport, William Hallahan, Paul Mc- Carthy, Joseph McCormack, Michael Soperak, and Thomas Murray, part of last year's varsity returned for the 1957 season. This group was comprised of John Grace, joseph Mankus, James Vaughn, john Sullivan, Albert Drucker, and Lawrence Gaffney. Many other boys also showed promise of becoming assets to the team, The J.V.'s, who practiced daily at Ansco Field, played a schedule of about ten games against North, Johnson City, Union-Endicott, and Vestal. BOWLING One of the most interesting sports available to the Central students is bowling. The boys' bowling team meets every Monday afternoon at the Laurel Bowlodrome. The var- sity team consists of john Hrn- cirik, John Cannon, Thomas Hmurcik, Richard Moore, Ronald Simkulet, Richard Nemconsky, and James Mahaney. The j.V. team includes George Shea, Fred Heypek, Thomas Crandell, Mar- vin Frey, John Tyler, Ronald Burke and Roger Winters. Our team which consists mostly of sophomores, com- petes with teams from John- son City, Union-Endicott, Vestal, and North every Monday, either at home or away. Many thanks to Mr. Frank Clark for his kind cooperation in supervising the boys' bowling team. Central's volleyball team, under the leadership of Coach John Lalley, finished its season undefeated. In league play, the team has won both the conference and sectional championships every year since 1951. Volleyball, which is becoming increas- ingly popular, stresses teamwork, coopera- tion, and good sportsmanship. This cer- tainly seems to describe Central's boys, who have kept our volleyball teams on top for six years. ULLE YBALL TENN s ln late April the boy's tennis team began its season. This year matches with Ithaca, North, Norwich, and Oneonta were included. Although the team lost Daniel Kane and Christopher Demtrak, two lettermen who had been sectional champions for the last three years, Leon- ard Clune and joseph Hester, returning lettermen, were there to take their places along with Charles and Roger Wales, Bruce Bateman and David Tomik. However the returning members of last year's team provided an experienced group with which this year's team could start. About ninety boys engaged in foul shooting. Again this year there was an inter-class swim meet with approximately thirty-five participants. To encourage boys to go out for the intramural sports a point system is used. At the end of each year Block B Club gives trophies to the three boys having the greatest number of points. To become a member, girls are required to pass a physical endurance test and a written test on the rules and regulations of different sports. They also must have earned a minor letter. The officers this year were Marcia Payne, Presidentg Pa- tricia Hawley, Vice-President, and Linda Malmros, Secre- tary-Treasurer. , Ht the beginning of the fall term the girls traveled to Endicott, where they tied with U-E in a soccer game. Later. they played against U-E girls in two exciting volleyball games which ended in a victory for Central. In March they played ,basketball against North. This group has many plans for expanding their activities next year. G. A. A. This year a new program of gymnastics was introduced by Miss Rippon. This consists of a series of exer- cises and routines set to music, producing a synchronized effect. The swimming pool was very popular this year. Many girls earned their junior and senior lifesaving Red Cross cards, and worked hard to prove their ability. The girls also participated in a synchronized swim- ming program under the direction of Mrs. Lydia Hanlon. These girls worked hard at practice twice a week, and presented a show at the end of the year. These Centralites had a very successful season in baseball, basketball, and tennis. They learned the rules and regulations of the games through the Referee Clinic, a group formed to teach girls how to referee, officiate, and keep score at the games.
