I QI Barbara Levene, Joan Stocking, Habla Ud. Espanol? Caesar lives again! and Diana Sall say, Oui nous parlons le francais. AWWA... One of the greatest barriers that must be broken through in a world striving for peace is that of language. Knowledge of foreign languages is a very important unifying factor. The modern language department at Binghamton Central High School, under the direction of Miss Loretta Murphy, offers courses in both French and Spanish. Latin is given as an ancient lan- guage as it provides pupils a distinct advantage in preparing for the study of a foreign language. These courses not only teach students to read, write, and speak other languages, but also help them to understand our fellowmen. Much time is spent stressing in each course that lan- guage's place in current affairs. The backgrounds and history of the countries where the lan- guages are spoken and the customs of the people who live there are also studied, Letters from foreign pen pals, newspapers from other countries, outside reading, plays and conversations in class, pictures of famous art works of these countries, and records of their music are all used as a supplement to the regular textbooks, to obtain this end, Although he may not realize it while still in school, in the future the student will be grateful for the background his study of foreign languages has given him, In this ever-shrinking world of ours today, it is imperative that we learn to communicate in at least one foreign tongue. That today's citizens understand the people who speak these lan- guages is even more important, Therefore, we urge you, the student, to take advantage of this opportunity to study a foreign language.
