Mr Helfer The power behind the scenes in the Bing hamton school system is Superintendent of Schools Martin A Helfer Although the stu dents do not see him everyday as they do their teachers and principal his influence is strongly felt within the schools Mr. Helfer understands fully the problems of students teachers and parents. His own sons keep him well in touch with the activities in the schools. Part of Mr. Helfer's job is the task of running the Binghamton schools in such away that they meet the standards required by New York State, and also prepare students to enter college in the business or industrial world. As New York State and Binghamton rank above the average this is a high goal, Mr. Helfer's record since he has been our Superintendent of Schools shows him to be an honest capable and intelligent leader of the principals and teacners who guide the minds of the children of today the citizens of to- morrow. Mr Springmann There must always be a captain at the helm of 1 boat Just as there must be a principal at thc head of the faculty and students in a high school of Central High School and the very cooperative understanding and intelligent leader of the student body Central s principal like most others in his field of work takes a great deal of interest in the stu- dent scholastic average. Beyond the call of duty Mr. Springmann gives his time and energy to supervise and attend extra-curricular activities in which the students of Central High are participat- in . He traveled to Norwich when Central s Debate Club met that of Norwich High School in inter- school debate. When speeches are being given in local and nation wide contests Mr. Springmann listens judges and advises all those who compete for the prize. If the basketball or football team travels to another city to rival for a victory he is the faculty member who travels along listening to the school cheers on the crowded bus. This is his free time and doesn t enter in to his official duties as principal. Yet Mr. Springmann finds time to listen to a student preparing for college and will advise and counsel him to make the proper decision. When he passes someone in the hall he always finds a minute or two to stop and ask how the student is get- ting along. This is his job as principal of Central High but none could handle it with as wise and steady a hand as our present principal--Mr. Ed- ward T. Springmann. Page F1 e 0 0 0 ' - ' - Mr. Edward T.
