.wmzwq .... LITERARY CLUB The bright bunch of book beavers formally known as Literary Club boast of the liveliest faculty advisor in school, Miss Constance Gantley. The annual Luncheon highlighted the administra- tion of Virginia Molessa in the Fall. Under the Presidential command of Monica Semanek, initiation was held at Iean Titchener's, and the traditional Sandwich Sale was held in Central's Corridors. On April 22, Lit club pre- sented an assembly program honoring great works of literature, illustrated by tableauxs and dramatic scenes from great books. Although all thirty-five members of this club belong to the fairer sex, appli- cations for membership were made by fellows this year! Although no decision has been made concerning these re- quests, selection of new members on a competitive basis will continue to take place biannually for girls. The energetic fall plans of Literary Club afforded the members much fun carrying them out in the Spring. The Bookworms had a busy season. Summa Cum Laude should follow the name of the Red Cross Council of Central in 1945. With the most success- ful membership drive in history 131451 under their belts, the council, under the presidencies of Carol Dickson and Donald Sukloff, plunged into a sea of other activities and drives ranging from a collection of penwipers and playing cards to a collection of unbreakable ash trays for veterans of the war. Miss Avis Balcom has directed pro- ceedings from headquarters in Room 202. The forty-three members have kept up with the best literature by the prep- aration of comic scrap books of Blondie and Mutt and left for mili- tary hospitals. In keeping with the times, the Bed Cross Council has tried to get things done with the fastest and the mostest. RED CROSS

I ww, mepwwowq .... DEBATE CLUB ART Cl .UB Centra1's Art Club is not very large but it is quality, rather than quantity, which matters most. And the members do have quality! Under the able lead- ership of faculty advisor Grace Hol- comb, the girls and boys paint, draw, and sculpture for their own pleasure and instruction. They are available to the Red Cross and to all the school or- ganizations for making posters. These scenic effects you have seen in the Lit Club assembly are the work of Art Club. So, if you want to see a talented bunch of gals and fellas and maybe have your portrait painted or a poster made, go to 325 on a Wednesday night. There you will see the Art Club of Central High. As the most argumentative organization in school, Debate Club has made the student body feel the force of its verbal battles. With the school population in the front line in assembly, this club verbally fought on the question of lower- ing the voting age. Mrs. Alice Vergason, faculty advisor, encouraged the debaters, and got them in training for their bout before the Civic Club, against North- High March 21. De- baters were Leonard Glass, Sonia Ne- Iame, and Louis Artuso. The controver- sial topic in this struggle was, Peace- time Compulsory Military Training. The twenty-five Debate Club mem- bers elected Louis Artuso to serve as President, and Ellis Tarsches to act as Secretary. Plans are already being made to increase the number of de- bates next year, and to present an ex- citing battle of wits and words.

GERMAN CI .UB Although their interpretation of Blondie in idiomatic German is not their only attri- bute to fame, it is perhaps their most novel one. Every other Wednesday members of German Club converse, sing, read, play cards, listen to native phonograph records with no English words spoken. This club has another novel aspect. Iohn Gorton presides over meetings as the only two-term president in its history. Other officers are George Carmen, who like the Presi- dent has held office for two terms, Mary Case who carries on as secretary and Darwin Willard who acts as treasurer. Miss Ann Meyer is advisor. When reminded of their Christmas party, club members affectionately hum Stille Nacht and Du Du liegst mir im Herzen which they sang at this affair. The season was terminated by a pleasurable spring outing. With their interpretation of Blondie already famous in Central, the club also features Lebkuchen as a specialty that will tease the appetite as well as the German Accent. CHOIR
