The building is far from beautiful or inspiring, but it suddenly fills with meaning and encompasses a lifetime of memories. His worn copy of Cicero's Orations has been re- placed by a gun, complacent day-dreaming in study hall by tense alertness in a muddy ioxhole, the warm smiles of school friends by the grimness and horror of war. But now Iohnny is home for a brief respite from battle, and in this short time his eyes will drink in the nostalgic sights which mean so much to him. Let us meet Iohnny as he enters the building and escort him through Central's cor- ridors as he relives his carefree school days. The following are the courageous words of one of the greatest men America ever knew, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. They were delivered to the American people as a prayer for our nation on the eve of D-Day, Iune 6, 1944. Ourpresident died for his country on April 12, 1945, but he did not die in vain nor will he be forgotten. His noble deeds and fearless words will always remain an inspiration of hope and faith to the world. The Panorama Annual Board of 1945 is proud to dedicate this book to a great man and a sincere friend of humanity. Almighty God: Our sons, pride of our nation, this day have set upon a mighty en- deavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity. UHGAN TIU SPRING K' ff Harper Artuso Conner The peppiest, noisiest, most talked in and talked about meetings of all school activ- ities are those of General Organization. After terms of rather smooth sailing G. O. was invigorated by a wide-awake, progressive cabinet of officers. The stimulus began in the Fall with Michael Selan as President, Agnes McIntyre as Vice President, and Barbara Corell as Secretary. The highlight of their team was the cele- bration of Papa Central Day held under the auspices of G. O. Teachers taught blue- jeaned, plaid-shirted students. The Court House Square rocked with cheers, and Papa was inaugurated at a dance which enthusiastically climaxed this holiday of Central. Peprallies and dances were used as a means of improving school spirit and pride. With the same goal in mind-that of improving school spirit-Louis Artuso took over in the Spring. His helpmates were Margaret Connor as Vice President and Ioan Harper as Secretary. Louie and his peppy gang of delegates were hosts at a meeting of the triple cities Student Council. Representatives from North, Iohnson City, Vestal and Union Endi- cott were on hand for a business meeting and eats in the school cafeteria. Research, pending a revision of the G. O. constitution was carried on, under the leadership of Mr. William Hogan, faculty advisor. The Fall term of 1944 and the Spring term of l945 were acclaimed as enthusiastic, contro- versial and peppy. General Organization really was Going On. y 1 Ruth O'Conner .. HU UH pg. FALL PRESIDENT ADVISOR , Miss Van Deusen - As the goal is the aim of every football halfback, so is Honor Society the goal for every student at Central. Twice a year this society attempts to select at an installation assembly the cream of the crop of Centralites on the basis of school service, fine arts, athletics, and scholarship. This year's crop was ambitious and busy. With Ruth O'Connor as F all President, Iames Morrison as General Officer, and Rose Mansour as Secretary, the activities under the spon- sorship of Miss Edith VanDeusen were well started when Iames Morrison, President: Philip Sweeney, General Officer: and Marjorie Allen, Secretary: took over in the Spring. The real meat of Honor Society is the Talkey, a newsy paper for alumni in the armed forces. The two editors, Virginia Molessa and Catherine Donnelly, keep our sailors, soldiers, and Marines hep to Central's latest jive. This year the athletic committee is preparing the Five Year Roster of Honor Society members. As according to custom the Society conducted the Honor Graduate Assemblies. The gold key of Honor Society is worn by the thirty-eight present members, as a symbol of gallantry in action in scholarship, athletics, fine arts or service. With editorial department, advertising division and rewrite department all located in 320, the Pan had a noteworthy year. Although two issues were missing in action because of war priorities in the print shop, the photographers finally obtained their darkroom and circulation upped to 1300. The two score and ten staff members were headed by Martin Rinker as Editor-in-chief and backed by Mr. Michael Bochnak as faculty advisor. The business editors were Peggy Treyz and Mary Case. As junior journalists the Pan Newspaper staff had headaches and fun almost simul- taneously. No printer's ink was spilled and the Pan went to press five times this year. TUBE T T FF SSIST With a birthday cake with only two candles in order, Student Staff Assistants are showing themselves to be up and at em. With Mr. William Bush as advisor, the three score members are growing up to their name filling in any leak or crack vital to the life of the school. All Student Staffites possess report cards and scholastic records that show nothing less than an S average. However, they must have other talents-hospitality as a hostess. a loud voice and an assuming manner in a noon study hall, nimble fingers in the art room, typing and filing ability in the counselor's offices, and inclination toward math in Mrs. Coffman's office, and sympathetic charm in the clinic. By giving one period a day-or four hours a week in service to Centralites, the Staff Assistants receive an award for one year's service. During the fall term Mary Meagher served as President and Ruth O'Connor worked as Historian. These officers were supplanted by Patricia Riley as President and Agnes McIntyre as Historian in the Spring term. Looking forward to its 3rd anniversary, the Student Staff Assistants, have the gratification of serving the school and stimulating school spirit above and beyond the call of duty. BAD Mr. Leo L clfs blue and white garbed bunch have ushed more footballs over the oal YU P 9 line, warmed more feet, and raised more spirits at football games than could the combined efforts of the backs, electric heaters, and a generous numerical edge over the opponent. At pep rallies and parades the Binghamton Central Band has heightened enthusiasm and school spirit in the same manner. The fancy stepping and twirling of Majorette, Norene Deemer, enhanced the performance of the organization when they formed the anchor at the U. E. game. The annual band concert in May featured a medley from Ok1ahoma which was received enthusiastically. Working with the drum corps during the football season, the band did itself, the school, and the team proud. - 1 DRUM CORPS When the eyes of football enthusiasts were not on the game, it was the drum corp that received the admiring gaze of the spectators. Led by Agnes McIntyre, the girls, twirling batons, beating drums, and playing fifes, made the saddest game less sad, the successful game more successful. Monica Semanek paraded as Drum Sergeant, while Leona Dobesh was head of the fife section, wearing white satin dresses trimmed with gold. Mr. Leo Lunch directed this spirited gang. The orchestra, also under the leadership of Mr. Lynch, played at the dramatics club presentations of Harriet and The Fighting Littles. ORCI lla QTRA 1 As. Webzfw ag.. DRAMATIC S CLUB The spotlight of attention is rightly focused on Dramatics Club. With faces animated with stage make-up, frowning over script lines, flushed with hard work and ultimate success, club members have wrought two plays before the Centralite audience, Harriet and The Fighting Littles. With a regime in the fall consisting of Philip Sweeney as President and Agnes Mclntyre as Secretary, the club presented Harriet with Vivian Mellor in the title role. Under the able direction of Mr. Carl Titus, Harriet was worthy production of the club. In contrast to the seriousness of Harriet , the club presented a hilarious comedy in the Spring term entitled The Fighting Littles. After the resignation of Mr. Titus, Mrs. Margaret Hasen- pflug took charge, refereed the Fighting Littles, and directed a success. Officers during the Spring term were Douglas Shirley as President, Iohn Gorton as Vice President, and Pat Hogarbohne as Secretary. All credit for these two fine presentations does not go to merely the club, cast, and direction. The men behind the men in front of the curtain are deserving of praise. The Stage Crew, with Charles Doerner as chief, created the sets and suffered a thousand headaches before the plays could be presented. Thus to the combined efforts of the Dramatics Club and the Stage Crew we give a verbal applause for a curtain call. ' STAGE CREVV Ale faecal!! nawowi mameah in Me . . Q-K. -fade, QM- so' Q21 ilgalh .6600 Maddell DISINCER-CHURCH CONTEST Last fall the Ciceros and Demosthenesf' of Central exhibited their talent in the annual Lyons Weeks Public Speaking Contest for boys. First prize was presented to Robert Dennis while the second and third prizes went to Douglas Shirley and Kenneth Bayne respectively. Ioseph Cleary and Basil Bohovesky also took part. In the Disinger Church contest held each spring five girls took part proving to possess fully as much talent as the boys. Valuable experience in the art of public speaking is gained from these annual contests. Who is next to try his voice? 4, l I ww, mepwwowq .... DEBATE CLUB ART Cl .UB Centra1's Art Club is not very large but it is quality, rather than quantity, which matters most. And the members do have quality! Under the able lead- ership of faculty advisor Grace Hol- comb, the girls and boys paint, draw, and sculpture for their own pleasure and instruction. They are available to the Red Cross and to all the school or- ganizations for making posters. These scenic effects you have seen in the Lit Club assembly are the work of Art Club. So, if you want to see a talented bunch of gals and fellas and maybe have your portrait painted or a poster made, go to 325 on a Wednesday night. There you will see the Art Club of Central High. As the most argumentative organization in school, Debate Club has made the student body feel the force of its verbal battles. With the school population in the front line in assembly, this club verbally fought on the question of lower- ing the voting age. Mrs. Alice Vergason, faculty advisor, encouraged the debaters, and got them in training for their bout before the Civic Club, against North- High March 21. De- baters were Leonard Glass, Sonia Ne- Iame, and Louis Artuso. The controver- sial topic in this struggle was, Peace- time Compulsory Military Training. The twenty-five Debate Club mem- bers elected Louis Artuso to serve as President, and Ellis Tarsches to act as Secretary. Plans are already being made to increase the number of de- bates next year, and to present an ex- citing battle of wits and words. .wmzwq .... LITERARY CLUB The bright bunch of book beavers formally known as Literary Club boast of the liveliest faculty advisor in school, Miss Constance Gantley. The annual Luncheon highlighted the administra- tion of Virginia Molessa in the Fall. Under the Presidential command of Monica Semanek, initiation was held at Iean Titchener's, and the traditional Sandwich Sale was held in Central's Corridors. On April 22, Lit club pre- sented an assembly program honoring great works of literature, illustrated by tableauxs and dramatic scenes from great books. Although all thirty-five members of this club belong to the fairer sex, appli- cations for membership were made by fellows this year! Although no decision has been made concerning these re- quests, selection of new members on a competitive basis will continue to take place biannually for girls. The energetic fall plans of Literary Club afforded the members much fun carrying them out in the Spring. The Bookworms had a busy season. Summa Cum Laude should follow the name of the Red Cross Council of Central in 1945. With the most success- ful membership drive in history 131451 under their belts, the council, under the presidencies of Carol Dickson and Donald Sukloff, plunged into a sea of other activities and drives ranging from a collection of penwipers and playing cards to a collection of unbreakable ash trays for veterans of the war. Miss Avis Balcom has directed pro- ceedings from headquarters in Room 202. The forty-three members have kept up with the best literature by the prep- aration of comic scrap books of Blondie and Mutt and left for mili- tary hospitals. In keeping with the times, the Bed Cross Council has tried to get things done with the fastest and the mostest. RED CROSS GERMAN CI .UB Although their interpretation of Blondie in idiomatic German is not their only attri- bute to fame, it is perhaps their most novel one. Every other Wednesday members of German Club converse, sing, read, play cards, listen to native phonograph records with no English words spoken. This club has another novel aspect. Iohn Gorton presides over meetings as the only two-term president in its history. Other officers are George Carmen, who like the Presi- dent has held office for two terms, Mary Case who carries on as secretary and Darwin Willard who acts as treasurer. Miss Ann Meyer is advisor. When reminded of their Christmas party, club members affectionately hum Stille Nacht and Du Du liegst mir im Herzen which they sang at this affair. The season was terminated by a pleasurable spring outing. With their interpretation of Blondie already famous in Central, the club also features Lebkuchen as a specialty that will tease the appetite as well as the German Accent. CHOIR alfedpearfnmnylrafqaqfnauadin.. FESTIVAL CHORUS If singing is any indication of happiness, Mr. Ray Hartley worked with the happiest bunch of people in school. Room 320 was transformed into a haven of harmony with the Festival Chorus and Choir very much in evidence there every day during the Sth and 7th periods. The result of this harmonious singing attitude of the choir and chorus was Sweet- hearts. Presented on the 17th and 18th of May, Victor Herbert's operetta starred, as candidates for operatic fame, Doris Deyo, Anita Shahinian, lack Flynn, and Eugene Krause. Although Sweethearts was the highlight of the year's work, festival chorus and choir were on tune for their 3rd Annual Concert at Christmas Time and for the Assembly Sing held April llth. Under the guidance of Mrs. Ruth Tan- ner, Central Dom Econ Club carries on as a member of a state-wide Economic Club organization. Girls interested in cooking, sewing, aiding the Red Cross. and in any sort of social undertaking might be typical of the sort of girl that belongs to this club. Alert and ambitious, the club has prospered under the cabinet of officers with Irene Kulik as President, Pauline Beagle as Vice President, Nancy Sweeney as Secretary, and Dorothy Balkas as Treasurer. Featured this year was a party for the ladies at Fairview Home, and a Christmas party for club members. For a baby club in respect to age, Dom Econ Club is getting well in the swing of things. CIRI, RESERVES The youngest of all of Central's or- ganizations is in the first stages of de- velopment. With Miss Margaret Taylor and Miss Violet Caganek as sponsors, the two-score members are being well taken care of in their weekly meeting. Although Girl Reserves are merely in the teething stage, their aims in life are well outlined. A development of the personality and character, encouraged by community and school service through social contacts and activities is their goal. In the fall of 1944, Central High's pigskin was once again toted out on the gridiron, and the school commenced its seventy-ninth sports year. Under the capable guidance of Coach Henry Merz, a fighting eleven was pulled together from the students who were left after the draft boards finished their job. The '44 season produced its thrills, victories, defeats, and heroes of the gridiron. Iim Agatheas, the '43 substitute who led Central to the school's first victory over U. E. in fourteen years, was back, holding a permanent seat in the backfield. Placed beside him was a newcomer to football, a student who was to be- come a myth in the Triple Cities, Vince Iackson. Also holding backfield positions were Bill Kurey and Pete Smyk. Forming the line which started out weak and which ended as a formidable defensive and offensive string were lVIike Ziac, Sam Ruffo, George Doyle, Pint Parsons, Iohn Babicek, Ioe Hamdan, and Tom Muscatello. The first string played remarkable ball throughout the season. But, they also had the support of 1500 students and a second and third string of fifty players. Substitutes who starred on the field were Bill Marusich, who scored the winning touchdown against I. C., Yatcha Kerstein, Harvey Smith, Gus Pap- pastrat, and Ross Peduto. When the season ended, three defeats, two ties, and two victories were chalked up in the annals of Central history. But, we must not forget the spectacular runs made by Vince Iackson-the eighty-six yard runback against North High for a touch- down: the fifty-one yard runback against U. E. which almost resulted in another B. C. H. S. victory? and the eighteen points scored by the Mercury of Central. In the U. E. game. Agatheas carried the pigskin from the 13 to the three yard stripe in two downs after lack- son's fifty-one yard run. Kurey gained a few inches on the next play: then, on the fourth down, Iinx Agatheas faded back to pass to Jackson but the pass was incomplete. The ball was given to U. E. and Central's last opportunity for victory was gone. Spunky loe Ham- dan, injured seriously in the U. E. game will be remembered for being the only Triple Cities' lineman to score a touchdown. After the '44 season ended, an all Triple Cities Football team was chosen by the four Triple Cities' coaches. And that's what the Blue and White quintet did to the tune of 682 points against 518 for its opponents. Central's cagers this year won ten out of eighteen games, and in doing so took third place in the Triple Cities Basket- ball League. Many of the games lost by the hoopsters were close. This year, the school had several outstanding court champions. They were Bill Kurey, George Doyle, Ted Stacey and Frank Bezek. The season was temporarily interrupted when on Ianuary 23, all school sports were cancelled until forty-four missing football jerseys were returned. A Vigilante Committee was formed by George Doyle, Bill Kurey, Chuck BeGell, and Pint Parsons. Immediately the four rounded up the jerseys. But, in that time a basketball and bowling game were cancelled. When the basketball season ended, the coaches picked a first and second All-Tourney team. George Doyle made the first team, and Ted Stacy, Frank Bezek, and Iim Morrison made the second team. Thus, the Bulldogs won four out of ten positions on the two teams. JAYVEES ip, ,,..
