BINGHAMTON CENTRAL HIGH SCHOCDL Binghamton, New York Life Begins At Central If WLIFE BEGINS AT CENTRALH could be put into production, one would see the trials and thrills of Central students. The excitement of their first day and establishing themselves in the new atmosphere of respons- ibility would probably be the first scene. The following acts and scenes would include all the studying and activities that Centralites enter into. Within these spacious halls, we have found a change in our out- look of life in general. We no longer are relying on other people's thoughts, but have learned to think for ourselves. We realize that in our hands lies the care of the future and we are preparing to face the challenges that will confront us. So much happens in our three years of high school that Father Time is unkind to make the years slip by so rapidly. The sad but inspiring day of commencement comes all too soon for most of us. The opportunities offered to the students today far exceed those presented when the school first opened. We have music, art, dramatics, athletics, journalism and literature at our finger-tips. All we must do is show the effort and school spirit that must prevail to carry on these activities.. The ease and calmness with which we carry on our duties has amazed people of the Wolder generationn to such an extent that they openly ask what they teach us nnowadays'. We can only credit it to the fact that we are brought up under a Democratic system which gives each student a chance and right to say and carry out his own opin- ions. We are not run like Robots under a superior hand as the children of Hitler. We have our Bill of Rights...our independence...the privilege of living our own lives as we wish. These things must we fight for to preserve for all people. Therefore we cannot forget the boys who have gone from these cor- ridors to play their part on another stage, a.stage of war and bloodshed. These sons of Central are gallantly fighting to preserve our right to attend a public school and learn to live our Democratic way of life. Sixteen Central youths have already given their lives and these we shall not forget. We shall get revenge on our enemies and are now trying to arm ourselves with an education to overcome less educated nations. God bless these loyal countrymen who are dying that Democracy may live on forever. In the pages to follow, the Panorama Annual Board of 1944 will endeavor to draw aside the curtain and present a passing review of this year at Central. We hope that you will take your mind away from the wor1d's strife for awhile and relax in the memories of your life at Central. W mechcate . . . Just as the theatre cannot forget a great actor, so a school cannot forget an outstanding character whose untiring and inspiring personality lingers long in the memories of our Alma Mater. We, the Panorama Annual Board of 1944, dedicate this book to such a person, Mr. Carl L. Titus. Because of his laudable direction of many school plays, his capable assistance in all school assemblies, his un- forgettable teachings and aid in English, and his quick smile and ever-ready word of advice or cheer, Mr. Titus will long be remembered as a loyal servant to Central and a sincere friend of all Centralites. Besides the presidents the secretaries were Dorothy Donnelly and Margaret Churchg General Officers, Edward Nosewicz and Margaret Kelly. Honor Society sponsored four im- pressive assemblies during the yearg two for the in- stallation of the new membena An atmosphere of suspense prevails in the audience that day for the new members are always taken by surprise. The other two assemblies were to honor the Honor Graduates. The members made sure that everyone received the awards they had earned and even tried to get Governor Dewey as a guest speaker through the pull of 'Best Citizen' Collins. Of course, the 'Talkey' was the newest addition to Honor Society's activities. Miss VanDeusen is rather proud of her group, and she should be. Honor Society is a society to be honored. Centralites buy a copy to read the who's, what's, and wherefore's of Central High. nHot On Your Tracksw and 'Central Bulldogn were some of the most popular attractions of the year plus the edi- torials, features, sports, and news stories. The biggest feature item was the decision of the Pan poll that King Bing still rules the world of Crooners. Plenty of changes and traditions were broken during the year. The biggest change was the departing of Lloyd Hartman for Uncle Sam's Navy and being capably succeeded by Michael Bochnak. Another was the appointment of a Junior A as editorial editor during the fall term and the appointment of two girls as associate-editors for the spring term. Game!D. They were on hand for our pep rallies, and as always, under the direction of our effervescent Mr. Lynch. We rather take the band for granted, until we realize just how far we would get Cor wouldn't get!D without our band during the football sea- son. We certainly need their presence when we wish to thunder out with the Fight Song, or any of those other well-known football songs. A singular honor was bestowed upon the band on March 27th, when they were asked to play at the Presentation of the Army- Navy WE' to Ansco Company. Altogether, they have done a fine job the entire year, and we have every right to be proud of the Central band. ' SPURRING ON THE VICTORY , JMX? 2amzfmsfmsswaawsmzuvz'1mmammaemlwQf5a QtmLW we'wwM fmfwwM-YM--- pQgg g? j5qfIgF KKQQ J 'E 1iq215 'TH EY su ALLN VJE,5l1USIC Ever since the organization of the Fife and Drum Corps in the fall of 1941 by Mrs. Henry Merz, it has had a full membership of girls who have taken the time to drill and practice and make Central proud of them. We associate them mainly with the foot- ball season, for it is then that we hear them drilling on-the lot on Front Street, and certainly it is then when all eyes are turned their way as they smartly march across the field in their white uniforms, and boots. They'd make a fine impression on any- one, and we're proud they belong to Central. So, our hats off to you, Fife and Drum Corps! 'THE SONG 0F THE ARTIST' This isn't an egg Kas Q 0 it probably looks like? but a penguin. How- ever, don't be too dis- couraged because Cen- tral does have some fine art students and you can find them on Thursday nights in Art Club. The members are always busy making pos- ters for the nPann, or a school play, or var- ious contests for art students. There were many blue ribbons given to Central students for the recent art contest at McLean's...we beat North by a long shot. Their work is often admired in the show case by the less fortunate. Maybe some of us should join the Arts and Crafts Club Cunder the able direction of Miss Holcombj and learn to distinguish with a brush the difference between an egg and a penguin. 'THEY KHEH HHAT THEY HANTED' WGood Afternoon, Ladies'...and the Central, North High Debate Clubs were again paying their annual visit to the Binghamton Civic Club. This year Debate Club was under the direction of Mrs. Alice Ver- gason. Instead of the annual debate, the two squads put on a symposium on the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, The prize was equally divided between the two schools. The members of the club donated the money to Dramatics Club with the latter putting it to their own use. All members had fun collabor- ating on the debate but were glad when the nknee-shakingn was over and they could say...0Good Night, Ladies'. 'THE PLAY'S THE THING' The main undertaking of Dramatics Club each year is the production of two plays. This year the club has brought to Central's stage the merry little folk-play 'Papa Is Alln - a comedy about the quaint Pennsylvania Dutch people. WHeaven Can Waitn, based on the motion picture 'Here Comes Mr. Jordan' was chosen as the spring production. Few of us will ever forget Clark Hunger- ford's portrayal of the lovable pugilist, Joe Pendleton...purp1e shorts and all. Working hand in hand with the Dramatics Club is the stage crew. These boys, under the leadership of Dick Valley and Bruce Mack, are responsible for erecting the stage sets. Without these boys' untiring efforts the plays could not have been so successfully staged. The Stage Crew is always on hand to prepare the stage for all types of assemblies. . That minute comes, and after much knee-shaking, it is over with. Now to await the decision of the judges. They announce the winners for the Lyon-Weeks public speaking contest. lst-Louis Artuso, 2nd-Robert Dennis, and 3rd Douglas Shirley. Irving Rothe and Benjamin Horowitch had also given fine speeches. This same procedure is enacted at the Disinger-Church contest in the Spring when five girls participate. Each must give a selection of her own choice and then for the news of the winners. It's fun to win but the losers are good sports and had fun speaking. 'WHEN LADIES MEET' Here we have the Literary Club of Central High...comprised of Junior and Senior girls...faculty adviser-Miss Constance Gantley... Main purpose, to increase knowledge concerning the current best sellers as well as the outstanding classics ...Other undertakings...sandwich sales, annual banquet, lending library, from which the girls may borrow the most popular books ofthe day...Our hats off to Lit Club for their splendid assembly program presenting tableaux of famous lit- erary works. 'THEY SHALL NOT DIE' This has been a busy year for the Red Cross - devoting most of their time in work for the service men. Officers for the year... Activities of the year...Roll Call Drive... knitting, sewing, collecting needles and yarn for Senior Red Cross... helping to send Songbooks to sol- diers in hospitals...Members made a pretty spectacle marching in the Memorial Day assembly...They serve. 'I HEAR VOICES' 'A STUDY IN FRENCH' Strains of WStille Nacht' seep under the door of 319A...someone is having plenty of fun...AH!...it's German Club's Christmas party... highlight of Fall term...There were card games and many Songs in German too...Fa1l officers: President, Richard Valleyg Vice President, Marlin Marting Secretary, Mary Palmatier, and Treasurer, Irving Rothe...Spring term presented skits in German...even one of Blondie's leap year adventures...games in German are exciting and good prac- tice too...say the Spring officers.. Mary Palmatier, Peter Crossley, Donna Newton, and Douglas Shirley... German is lots of fun when German Club meets. Ever played Bingo in French... join the Le Cercle Francais and join the fun...main purpose of club: practice French and learn more about France...an informal discussion is carried on in French ...roll call is answered to by French proverbs...members present skits and games in French...even puppet shows...Officers for the two terms were-Presidents: Reva Moore and Jean Schaeferg Vice-presi- dents: Jean Schaefer and Mike Tashiang Secretaries: Charles Seidenburg and Mabel Benderg Trea- surers: Mabel Bender and Mary Kenyon. Have you seen any of these nFrenchiesW around? la:ena.wsa,1m, 'AS YOU LIKE IT' The Dom Econ Club really whips up something good every other Thursday evening whether 1t's a cake or just plain fun...open to all Centralite girls...sponsored by the Homemaking Department... adviser Mrs. Ruth S. Tanner. Pur- pose...to combine business and pleasure in a way profitable to both the members and service or- ganizations as the Red Cross... meetings rotate between a social and business gathering...Delegates from Club attended Zone meeting of National Home Economics clubs... Lovena Philan, a Centralite, elected President of thls organization... A fine democratic club for girls interested in social club with a set purpose. 'SONS 0F FUN' Meeting is called to order by President Charles Crockett with Vice-President, Douglas Shirleyg Secretary, David Cohneg and Treas- urer, Norman Skeirik on hand...the purpose is reviewed...to create, maintain, and extend throughout the schools and communities, a better standard of Christian character... to encourage clean living, clean speech, clean athletics, and clean scholarsh1p...the members are ex- perts at swimming, bowling, ping- pong, handball, pool, and paddle- ball. The Y.M. makes a good head- quarters for all sports...More fun is had when the Southern Tier Hi-Y Council comes around to its quar- terly meetings...Some were priv- iliged to attend the Eastern New York State conference. Mr. Heagy should be proud of his group because Central is. Emilia P JW y , -, if J,, Gvlkw H 'LIFE WITH FATHER' The sound of merry voices...the lilting rhythm of a gay tune...the full, rich swell of harmonic chords...a sudden burst of laughter...that is what we mean by nLIFE WITH FATHERW, in this case, nPopH Hartley. WPopW has been with our A Capella Choir and Festival Chorus for just one year and has already performed,miracles, the main one being the production of the comic opera HErminieN. NPopN worked hard directing everything from the graceful dancing of the Gavotte to the actual singing. Even now the strains of NAh! When Love Was Youngw are hummed in Central's halls. Although WErminieW took up most of Pop's time, he still had time to lead the Choir in singing 'Mairzy Doatsn for the Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs. And we can't forget the joint concert with North during the Christmas festivities. Yes, the Music department has been plenty busy this year. Let's give a hearty applause to HPopn. WTo serve and assist the staff in the activities of the school and to maintain a high standard of voluntary student service' is the creed and object of this newest organization in our school. Under the direction of Mr. Bush with President David Harper and Secretary Marlin Martin, this group is making an earnest effort to serve Central and Centralites. The 53 members are 'busy beesn around Cen- tral. You can find them helping in every phase of school work: cleaning in the art room, usher- ing at assemblies, helping in the typing rooms, assisting in the clinic, supervising noon hour activities and acting as hosts or hostesses of the school. All this represents the sacrifice of leisure time to voluntary service for their Alma Mater. The armband designates about four hours weekly devoted to school and this work is rewarded with a service award at the close of the year. The boys had been playing good ball all season but there was some element lacking...something wasn't clicking...the team had gone down in defeat to Onondaga Va1ley...6-O...Johnson City...33-0... Norwich...19-0...Ithaca...18-6...North 14-12...and Johnson City again...20-0...In between these games they had managed to take one game away from North High by a score of 6-0...All these demoralizing games however were before the day of November 25th...It was on this same day by our calendar that 11 football players from B.C.H.S. filed into North High Stadium followed closely by some 1500 rooters who had come to witness the Annual Turkey Day Classic...the players took the field and soon the opening kickoff came...in a short time the first period had ended...the score 0-0...then the second period began and this period too ended 0-0...the third period opened and closed with those same figures 0-O...However, as one looked at the white scoreboard at the end of the fourth period a tint of blue seemed to have blended with the white...the scoreboard read CENTRAL- 6 U. E.-OOOOOOO. It had taken thirteen years of defeat and ties to finally beat this team from Union Endicott, but the team of 1943 had proved it could be done...The game was over and Central had turned back the tornado...And so it was on this same November 25th that these same 11 players filed out of the same stadium with a smile of victory on their faces...then on to the courthouse for a pep rally...next the snake dance down the middle of Court Street... First Central had turned back the mythical tornado...now they were turning back the traffic...but then, who wouldn't stop after they had heard that Central had beaten U. With only one letterman returning from last year's squad, the quintet was built around Davison and Ed. Nosewicz but the departure of these two for the armed services and the loss of Andy Dino disrupted the set up of the squad. After being settled again, we find that Currey, Surin, Stacey, Agatheas and others of the squad were playing great ball. The Blue and White played their home games at Daniel Dickinson court. They met the opposition of the Triple Cities, with the exception of Union Endicott, with fair success. The majority of their losses showed a difference of one or two points. This itself tells to some extent the great fight they put up against stronger teams. Central was asked to the Little Falls tourna- ment but declined the bid in order that they might participate in the Broome County sectionals.
