This Hjump' from the ceremony of graduation to induc- tion is probably the most important step in the lives of these 1943 Graduates. Already many of January 1943 Grad- uates have started their training for warfare...Now many more plunge into this great state of confusion to defend certain rights and privileges. On the far-flung battlefields, the boys will always remember their experiences at Central...and when they are granted a furlough...we know that they will come back to visit their Alma Mater...an Alma Mater that meant so much in the guidance of their destiny. For they realize that it was here, at Central, that they were taught fair play, team work in getting along with their fellow men, discipline, perseverance, self-reliance, admiration for their superiors, and respect for competition. All of these things are con- tributions to the formation of their character and person- ality, which mean so much now and in later life. These Graduates can never forget Central, even in a fast-changing world. They will always respect and honor it, not just as an institution of learning, but as the builder of their lives. The Panorama Annual of 1943 so dedicates its theme, nSchool Lifen, to the students of the future, that they, too, may be as courageous in heart as those past UCentral- itesn, who gallantly went forth to war in 1917-18 to defend world democracy, and those present 1943 fellows, who will soon fight to preserve and protect world peace. man' u ,iw ,H M jf, 'Ay . s Alma Mater KBy C. During the fall term with Mike Foley as President and Voula Vassos and Olga Krch as Vice President and Secretary, and under the guidance of Mr. Ho- gan, semi weekly meet- irmgs W9I'9 Yield for accomplishing necessary tasks as well as insti- tuting many fine poli- cies. The spring term, with Bill Behan as Pres- ident, and Virginia Lyon and Virginia Molessa as Vice-President and Sec- retary, has shown Gener- al Organization attempt- ing to better the stan- dards of the school. Petitions were filed concerning the school ink and its quality, also concerning soap and hot water in the showers for after school athle- tics. The General Or- ganization of the spring term also started plans for more school corridor dances which had in re- cent terms been discon- tinued. Every term the General Organization undertakes to better the conditions in Central and to keep them up to as high a standard as possible by watching not only the important mat- ters but also the small often overlooked inci- dentals. The initials of Gen- eral Organization really spell the policy of that group. G0...ln the last two terms, General Or- ganization has really gone to town in its ef- fort to perform not only the duties required of it but also to exercise a wholesome and helpful influence for all mem- bers of the student body. Don't be alarmed, it's not a conquering German Army entering to loot our fair city Cand it never will bel. It's only 48 members of Central's Band showing us the result of much time put in practice, the expert leadership of Leo Lynch, and the cooperation of all concerned. Or it might be the 45 well-trained members of the Orchestra filing in to take their places, ready for a concert. The band was right in there pitching for every football game last yearg in pep assemblies, formations and maneuvers during the half. This doesn't mean the extent of the Band's repertoire is Plow down the field to the goalpost and the like. Quite the contrary. The band has played in parades for service men and the dedication service of the Honor Roll for World War II. They par- ticipated in the Exchange Club program at the Kalurah Temple and in the Navy Day Parade. April 16th marked the date of WRed, White, and Blue Harmonyn the successful joint program with the West Junior Band and Orchestra. The Orchestra has put its talents to use in furnishing music for many of Mr. Titus' plays and by playing for Commencement, Baccalaureate Exercises, and other school functions. Grchestra Festival Chorus come LET Us sms 'Sometimes I wonder why I spend a lonely night ...... ' That's right! It's the lilting strains of 'Stardust' coming from room 320. Mr. Walley and his 'Stardust Choir' are at it again, tuning up for one of those Spring concerts. Do you remember the wierd effect produced by that Easter number 'Listen to the Lambs'? If not, maybe you'll recall how your heart skipped a beat when you heard the choir's thrilling arrangement of 'Ode to America.' But May 14th was really a night to remember. Helen Tappan, LaVerne Whitman, George Rogers, Genevieve Adomaitis, Bob Deyo, Conrad Sterns, Ellis Tarches, Marceil Dorsey, and Ethel Mae Barker are some of the soloists who interpreted the glorious music of George Gershwin and Victor Herbert. The brilliant costuming and spec- tacular music must have made some impression on you. Another star attraction of the Spring Revue was the Girl's Trio. We'll be looking forward to hearing their harmonious voices next year. Yes, the Choir's reputation soared high in 1943 as they sang their way to glory. Although the Choir seemed to take the limelight this year, Festival Chorus cannot be snubbed altogether. Last Fall they played a big part in the Combined Concert with North High. They showed their patriotic spirit in such songs as 'Wings Over Amer- ica' and 'I Am An American'. Everyone remarked about how splen- didly the Chorus sang the French Christmas Carol. But wait! They're not through singing yet. Don't forget that near the end of June, Festival Chorus puts on a program of their own. Festival Chorus had an active program of music this year and they really enjoyed it. Now, this isn't the start of a leng- thy advertisement, it's merely your introduction to a few of the accom- plishments of the Girl's Fife and Drum Corps, newly organized last term and rapidly gaining in prestige ever since. Vou'll remember their drills exe- cuted in pep assemblies and at foot- ball games and the formations made with the band at those same games. The Corps also played in the Navy Q- H Day men Parade, in the selective service 's parades, in the Court House dedication service of the plaque for World War ll veterans, and in the recent Bond Drive Parade. Dur- ing the NRed, White, and Blue Par- monyn presentation at West Junior April 16, the Fife and Drum Corps did the best drumming of its short career. lt was really worth praise and guarantees a lengthy career of success. There are 28 girls in this branch of our musician's union. We like tO hear them play, and they do look nice in their uniforms! A FORWARD FOR SERVICE What is the Red Cross doing at Central? That's a big question with a big answer. All the work this year has been centered around war activities. -Central came out on top in the Roll Call drive this year with S126. -The Red Cross delegates collected money for articles to be packed in kit bags for the service men. -The soldiers at Camp Upton, N. Y. station hospital greatly acknow- ledged our school for answering their call for Christmas Cards to send. -Twenty girls from Central, inter- ested in Red Cross work, have volun- teered for canteen service. presented a play entitled 'Safety in the Homeu, written by Malcolm Waite, for the city-wide council. All in all, the Red Cross Council is a very important delegation, which is doing everything in their effort for our country and our school! l 1 - , we .ft S t a g e C r e w THE MAN BEHIND THE BLACKOUT Just as the army needs its maintenance crew to furnish sup- plies and keep in the groove...so Central needs the stage crew to keep things jivin'! Although their work is behind the scenes and the players get the applause they are no less an essential element in the successful performances we have enjoyed this year. Under the leadership of Jim Case, the Stage Crew has worked hard to produce Central's top plays, Excursion and 'The Little Foxes'. These plays could not have been produced successfully without the beautiful stage sets and efficient planning done by the Crew and Mr. Titus. Also, these ambitious boys are present at all of our assemblies, working hard to make them perfect as far as production is concerned. All hail the unsung heroes behind the scenes...our efficient Stage Crew. Dradmatics Club no ww 4-M THE FIRST SPEAKER To speak or not to speak Cwith apologies to Mr. Shakespearel. That was the question put be- fore the B.C.H.S. stu- dents by the Lyon-weeks Speaking Contest. Eight courageous centralites.. Ginny Lyon, Jackie Bol- ton, Minnette Unger, Mary Troy, Ruth Tanen- haus,Tom Behan, Ed Craw- ford, Malc Waite, Harold Wolfe, Henry Tompkins... volunteered to display their oratorical talents. The rest of us just re- laxed, never giving it another thought until the day of the contest arrived. I wonder how many of us realize what the contestants were do- ing, meanwhile. First, suitable sel- ections had to be found. And, to rind a suitable selection is harder than finding the proverbial needle in a haystack.H And, that's not all... the fun is just start- ing, as, after they de- cide what to talk about, they have to memorize it Then having learned what they're going to say they have to learn how to say it. So, the next time the Lyon-Weeks Contest rolls around, and as we sink lazily into our assembly seats, let's just stop and think of what they are going through, and give them credit for what they've done... THE JUDGES DECISION Spring, ah me, 'tis here once more and with it comes each year... well, what does come with spring?...Crocuses, and spring fever?...Well yes, but that's not ex- actly what we mean. An acts ivity of the club is the making of posters for all large assembly programs. Their other activities during the last two terms have been wood carving, photo coloring, linoleum block printing, and making large drawings to dec- orate the soldiers' barracks and hospitals. An assembly program was produced during the spring term on nArt for Victoryn. Members of the club worked in collaboration with the stage crew and choir and drew, in full view of the audience, various posters pore traying our duties in the war effort. The Arts and Crafts Club has done much to help produce our fine assemblies. LET US CONSIDER P-RaE-S-F-N-T-I-N-G Debate Club and advisor Mr. Lloyd Hartman. OUR PROGRAM FOR TODAY Formed of a group of junior and senior girls who are in- terested in reading and in- creasing their knowledge concerning the newest, popular novels as well as the famous classics...but all education and no play makes Mary a dull girl...and it is under the latter category that Lit Club proudly presents its assembly programs. Remember the mur- der?...and those sandwich sales, typically Lit Club... not too literary we admit, but a super way to make money to keep up our subscription to the NBook of the Month Clubu.. In our meetings every Thursday afternoon in 201, each girl answers roll call with a quo- tation of her choice...the rest of the meeting is devoted to planned programs...Lit Club has its own Hborrowing li- brary' from which the members can lease the current best sellers...We always have loads of fun, needless to say, es- pecially at our picnic in June which annually rounds out the year's activities. Central dropped its first game to Onondaga Valley, but then proceeded to bring back five straight victories before the fateful U. E. game. Falling down in the path of the onrushing Bulldogs were Ithaca High, Norwich, Johnson City, North High, Johnson City again, in that order. Outstanding among the Saturday afternoon heroes were John Mikolasko, John Pandish, Allan Cave and Joe Taylor, all of whom made the Triple-Cities All-Star team. Incidentally, Steve Muska and Chuck Ketchoyian, who played steady games throughout the sea- son received honorableimention for the same team. Perhaps the most thrilling game of the year involved the Centralads and their cousins from the Northern section of town, the North High Indians. The wild and wooley clash with the Toma- hawking tots, was nip and tuck all of the way, with the Bulldogs scoring the one and only touchdown of the day in the last five minutes, thus winning 6-0. John Pandish spent the afternoon open- ing up holes in Red line, but even with his ardent work touchdowns were scarcer than rubber tires and it took a long drive to get the ball into North territory. A beautiful pass, Taylor to Cave, brought the pigskin to the 'three' stripe and from there Allan plunged over for the score. After they took over Johnson City twice, by virtue of great play by Cerretani, Cave, Ziac and Mikolasko, among others, the Bulldogs were all set to take over Union Endicott but once again the U. E. Tiger stole some of the spotlight from the U. S. Turkey on Thanksgiving day and put the Bulldogs in reverse to a tune of 19-O. Chanecka, who was rated by an upstate coach as the 'best all around player he has seen in fourteen years', was again chosen as the NAll tournament centeru. Intra-mural basket- ball had its place on Central's sports calen- cmr this year, when, under the direction of Coach Merz, a 13 team league was formed. Each team played five games and at the end of the season the 4 top teams participated in the play-offs. The uDodgersU a team composed of John- ny Hayko, Bill Metrus, Charlie Ketchoyian, Joe Wychules, Joe Luchansky, John Atwater Ccoachb, finally won. Under Coach John Guley, the Junior Var- sity basketball quin- tet played a 15 game schedule, winning and losing games. The J. V.'s played in a league similar to the Varsity's organization, the Triple Cities con- ference. 12 games were scheduled with Triple Cities teams, while three 'outside' games were also listed. In these last three, the little Blue trounced Windsor twice and Oxford once. Varsity f ,pw ,W rv K f,4r-nr, AV' ',2 fr2 f? QE K Q! THE GLURY OF DEMOCRACY THE sacrifices that are needed in order to Win the war are apparent to us all. The Treasury's appeals to buy War Bonds, the Government's pleas to conserve gas and rubber, the economies required to avoid inffation, the necessity of rationing many essential commodities-all these have become vital in the minds of our people. Necessity has awakened us, not only to the size of the task before us, but to the fact that our future as a nation is at stake, and in characteristic fashion we-zz!! are responding. Uur hearts speak, our purses are open Wide, and regardless of creed, or color, or political convictions, our honest differences of opinion are being dissi- pated before the issue that confronts us. This is the glory of democracy: that a man may think as he Will, speak as he Will, Vote as he Will, and worship God in his own Way, yet in the hour of peril to the State, that which is for the greatest good of all is not only his most compelling thought but the strongest prompting of his heart. In that hour his thought is no longer of himself but of his country, and it is as though his soul Were crying out those memorable words of Plato: ccMan was not born for himself alone but for his country. , l'residen BUY WAR BONDS lN'lil'liNfXllONll lilbllxll H MXLlll'Xl QORlORLX'lll0Xf Congratulations l I'hGd'l' of CENTRAL HIGH EN DICOTT JOHNSON RETAIL STORES CONGRATULATIONS Cu am, ,Al AND HAPPY LAN DIN GS TO THE 1943 GRADUATES OF B.
