Pages are enlarged, quotations are omitted, a section for informal snapshots of students and teachers has been contributed, and material from the sophomores accepted. All these changes are blended to follow the general theme of Phases of School Life. Hoping and knowing that all of you will find some matter of interest within the contents of this book, we challenge you to turn this page. , i L CC im!! Jim dog is dead-theylre saying so He's nicely boxed and left beneath A rosebush. Suddenly I know A large contempt for death, Those gay bones resting Calm and shriven Ashes of roses? Ten to one All up and down the hills of heaven Rabbits are on the run! I'll wager, if I died tonight And halting by the river's rim A bit bewildered at my plight Should call, Here, jim! Here jim! Yelping with glory, glad and rough He'd hustle down the other side And soon I'd feel a warm red scuff Towing me through the tide. Author Unknown. Administration a--hh DANIEL J. The girls had an outstanding disadvantage: they had no adequate gym of their own, room 13 being too small to be used for anything except practice games. They had to cram in games at odd hours and on unex- pected days when the boys' gym was vacant, or sup- posedly vacant. It was a hard fight, but one team, No. 3, finally won out. Here are the teams in the order of their final scores: Team 6, team 5, team 1, team 4, team 2, and last but scarcely least, team 3, whose players were as follows: Center-Twila Peterson Side-center-Nancy McEwan ForwardsfNatalie Pierce, captain: Ellen Mae Mar- tin, Irene Stankiewicz Guards-Irene Gilewski, Mary Serbonick The girls who are to receive awards in basketball are as follows: Center-Twila Peterson Side-center-Nancy McEwan Forwards-Irene Sevara, Pauline Stasukevich Guards-Mary Serbonick, Margaret Jankovic Manager-Dora jean Wahl March 21, the winning afternoon team played the winning morning team and lost by a narrow margin after four thrilling quarters. BASEBALL PAT THOMAS Baseball simply isn't a nine-inning game when the Sophomore girls get hold of it. Well, then, what is it? you ask. Actually it is a combination of a dancing class and a track team. Why? you ask, shouldnt it be the regulation game? To this question we give the impudent answer: 'iHow should we know? Heavens knows Miss Wilbur tries. She simply can't keep the girls from doubling up when Nancy Randall does her version of the Russian Bear in the middle of a mud puddle or when Beverly Nyman goes home all wet. We haven't seen her since and anyone who has might drop us a line and tell us how she is drying out. Anyone seeing Marge jankovic trot around the bases would think that she were trying out for the one- mile trot. Anyway, Marge needn't worry about not getting to the base on time because she slugs the balls so hard that the girls have to look hard before they spot the ball. Ann Pasquale alias joe DiMaggio, alias i'Flash, wouldn't be very much help to the man who runs the track team. We are afraid she would walk away with all his prizes. There are numerous other funny occurrences on every Tuesday and Thursday from nine toieleven, when it isn't raining, and we cordially invite anyone to come out and watch us. v ::::::::::':::::::::::: A::: ROBINSON PHARMACY EXCHANGE STREET AT HAWLEY Free Delivery on Purchases of 551 or over Preffriptiofz Service Spend a Pleasant Evening at HAPPY HOUR MINIATURE GOLF COURSE Shuffle Board Skeet Ball Shoot A Light CONKLIN ROAD B. Hockey, played under the direction of Miss Hazel Wilbur, was a new sport to many of the participants, who soon found it was a fast, exciting game which they delighted in playing. Of course, hockey was not without its humorous moments. The teams, which had been chosen at the beginning of the season, were active rivals and many a girl found her embarrassing moment, when, full of team spirit, she overplayed an important shot. Then, too, there was the muddy day, when more than one girl slipped and fell, providing a comical spectacle for her teammates. As the season wore on, the girls of the hockey squad thought more and more often about the hockey letters to be awarded at the season's close. Those who proved worthy of awards were: Jeanne Crossett, Dorothea Kniffen, Frances Larrabee, Mary Lewis, Ellen Mae Martin, Geraldine Murphy, Natalie Pierce, Mary Sullivan, Patricia Thomas, Jane Titus and Dora jean Wahl. The hockey season was closed with a banquet which members of the Sophomore, junior and Senior squads attended. All who had participated were regret- ful that the season had ended, but determined to join the hockey players the next year, for another fun-packed season. TO A SOPHOMORE He who knows not and knows not that he knows not: He is a fool-shun him. He who knows not and knows that he knows not: He is a child-teach him. He who knows and knows not that he knows: He is asleepgwake him. He who knows and knows that he knows: He is wise-follow him. So runs an old Arabian proverb, handed down from ancient times. In the not so ancient times of a few decades ago this saying was applied to those of the rank of freshman, sophomore, junior and senior, respectively. You sophomores, therefore, know not and know that you know not, you are children and are to be taught. Well, if you want to learn you have surely come to the right place. In fact, you won't be able to help acquiring a little knowledge whether you want to or not. We're not going to tell you to make the best of the opportunities offered you, for you have been hearing that all your lives. Nevertheless, it is a good idea. Do some work, enough to keep your teachers happy, have some fun, but not so much that you raise their wrath. Follow this formula and you and Central will get along all right. Mary Grow and Jane Roberts started their set on court two. It was a fast set and the two were quite evenly matched. They welcomed the few helpful hints given them by Miss Wilbilr. After a hard battle jane finally won, but Mary was a good loser as are all the girls who play tennis on one of the four Central afternoon teams. Mary's second game was played with Gladys Mur- ray. The score got up to 5 all in games and because it is a rule with the school teams that only one, instead of the ordinary two, games can be played when each girl has five games the girls played only one more. Mary won this game by a lucky net ball when the score was 30-40, Mary's favor. Altogether, Mary had played ten games. In other words she had, during a period of six weeks, played every girl on her team. She had won eight of the games and was therefore going to be one of the four on her team to play the best four players on the other teams and the six who came out in the finals would be the ones to receive emblems providing their attendance was good.
