Think not, gentle reader, in this book' to find Thoughts ot great importance from a mighty mind. Seek not twixt its covers much food for the brain D For a search in that line would be quite in vain In this little volume few things wise are said, All the reading matter is for fun instead. Save when We've attempted Without meter, without rhyme To tell what's been accomplished in one short year's time, Much We are indebted to those Who'Ve lent a hand To keep this book from perishing quite hopeless on the strand Many could We mention whose kindly Willing aid All our trials and burdens has much lighter made. May fair smiling fortune all their Ways attend And their lives be happy and peaceful to the end. Thus the High School Annual Without more ado Makes its sixth appearance. Kindly read it through. If the jokes are pointless, if the jests are lame, A If the puns are punless and the roasts are tame, If the entire booklet be notlextra good, Remember. as you read it, We've done the best we could. Farewell to our friends and farewell to our foes, Farewell, dear old school, with your joys and your woes, Farewell, Noughty Nought, and farewell, Noughty One, We're going to leave for our work now is done. No more shall we sit crowded three in a seat Through the winter's sharp cold and the summer's fierce heat N o more shall we march out- at night and at noon To that dear old piano's melodious tune. . No more must we grub' over Virgil and Burke, Or sweat over German' and French like a Turk, Still we can not suppress just one parting sigh As we leave now forever old Binghamton. High. When at last age has bowed us, and years dimmed our sight' We'll recall its old mem'ries with heartfelt delight, ' The sleighrides, receptions, the dances and scraps, The good times we've had as well as mishaps. ,So in leaving the school that its mem'ries be bright, We will bear with us hence neither malice nor spitef' '-We'll forgive the small juniors for all they have done .Since the little ones did it for nothing but fun. - We wish them success when as seniors they'll try A To keep up the standing of famous old High. May their efforts be crowned with joy and with praise And joy and good fortune attend all their ways. The school room is hushed, not a breath stirs the curtain strings as they hang lazily pendant before the wide open windowsg the sun from a cloud- less sky sends down its lustrous beams, flooding the room with its golden radiance. At length a tiny cloud appears on the far off horizon, and a gentle breeze steals softly through the windows and swings slowly the cur- tain strings and as it grows in strength, a soothing murmur like gentle Summer breezes sighing through the pines, comes from the West side of the study room. And ever as the wind increases the murmur swells until the room is filled with the lovely sound. We cease to, study and listen spell- bound to the beauteous harmonies, From whence this melodious strain? Is it the gentle Zephyr touching with her delicate fingers the golden strings of some sweet voiced Arolian Aarp? Is it some minstrel fairy drawing the fender melodies from his silvery lute?-No, dear reader, it isn't. It's noth- mg but the West wind rustling through Rose's whiskers. a 0 TWO. nv FRESHMAN CLASSES. N ow the year has fied and idle hopes have crumbled into dust, Or by winging upward have grown great and things in which we trust. Through the grade the class has passed, to the higher from the low, With a steady onward motion like a mighty river's flow. In the dreamy inner feeling hope and love pass in on high, And the charming idle fancies, gently live or sadly die. I As the everwidening ripples formed by pebbles as they sank, Grew fainter, softer, smoother, till they reached the river's bank. So do deeds performed in secret by love and kindness, all in part, Grow softer, dearer, purer, till they touch the doer's heart. Shall the Satan-moved sceptic, cast his wile, and use his art, Till he has with doubting spoiled thy tender loving heart? Shall such doubt and avarice and beastly hate so change thy whole, That thou wilt forget thy maker, worship self, and lose thy soul? The soul has lived forever, since the soul will never end, With duration was it formed and with all future will it blend. As without an ear to listen no sound would ever be, So without our souls and God, all future time would never be. 'Tis proclaimed by raging tempests and the wisperings of the trees, And announced by vague conceptive depths of dark blue swaying seas. Dying, dying, we are dying, sigh the winds adown the slopes, Dying, dying, we are dying, mourn our weakened, trampled hopes. Growing, growing, we are growing, chirp the young birds in their nest, Growing, growing, we are growing, all the youthful minds attest. Knowledge heeds not bribings, pleadings, patient labor she demands, But each grain that knowledge pays us, helps to widen wisdom's strands. Of all ihe graces fairly tested, honor has the truest ring, Beauty fades, and hopes desert us, and we feel the changes' sting. I-lope will lead us on to glory but despair will bring us woe. Hope will tempt us to the better but despair will make us low. Days of labor, days of pleasure, striving onward from the past, Each has still a slight remembrance: something done that's sure to last. Kindness is so frail a virtue that we often pass it by, But we reap a fuller harvest if its presence we discry. Patient labor, loving kindness, will most surely win success, And the day that has the cloud-vail has for us some kind caress. Ages are but fleeting seconds in the endless chain of time. Spend thy priceless moments wisely, use them toward some hope sublime Are we lost, then? Look behind us. There the dead and dying years Are the milestones of the pathway of our hopes, our joys, our fears. And the pathway of the future, bright with light, and smooth and fair. But a mist hangs just before. We cannot see what's waiting there. As the rising sun in gladness, tinges faint the eastern sky, As the swans sing songs of wonders of the future as they die, As the noisy brooklet everwidening flows onward to the sea, As the holy inspired prophets chant to earth what they foresee, As all of these betoken greater wonders yet to pass I So do school days tell of wonders in the future of the class. 'V S fm 14? OUR SOC IETIES. ALPHA ZETA.. p A As the succeeding years in the history of Alpha Zeta have eclipsed every previous achievement- so has the year 1898-9 exceeded all. The menbership of the active chapter has during the present year, been increased to fifteen, and throughout this time the meetings have been largely attended by both active and honoraries, to whom, they have been a source of much pleasure and profit. A , During the year Gamma has frequently been entertained by Theta Sigma and has also enjoyed numerous other social events. The anniversary of the founding of a Chapter of Alpha Zeta in Binghamton was celebrated at the home of Louis Clinton where a very pleasant evening was spent, attended by about forty actives and honoraries. The Annual Banquet, another of the chapter's social functions, was held at the Hotel Arlington during Easter vacation. A number of honor- aries were present as well as mem bers of the Faculty. ' During the past year our honorary members have been a source of much assistance to the active chapter, and although seven of the actives have completed their courses this year, yet the friends of Gamma may rest assured that the fraternal spirit rests in competent and willing hands. . THETA SIGMA. Gamma Chapter of the Theta Sigma Society began work this year with an active membership of nineteen. Since then the list has increased to twenty-six. 'In the work of the last year We have nothing to regret. Our motto has been Work before Play, and the evenings have been proitably as well as pleasantly spent. Several. times have our sisters thrown their doors hospitably open and entertained us royally. Not least among these are Grace Benson, Sara Whitney and Rena Truman. However, we are not alone indebted to our sisters, but also to Mr. Jack Phelps, who delight- fully entertained us at his beautiful home on Main street. One of the most prominent of our jollities was the Christmas dance given in honor. of our beloved honora.ries. In the future our annual banquet and sleigh-ride to House's Hill loom up before us. With much regret the Seniors leave dear cld Theta Sigma and the evenings spent with our Alpha Zeta brothers and Lambda Sigma friends will always be remembered. xlfllkuwt as Hgh home, , Ztxbennhmf Misha, l .g,h,mmm 1 with ne r-mi'-il 'Wh Dur- u.'E:a1qg,g,Y.l x'r1Fmmm Q -ilillimtuedl 'l2'3ltlhi5yw,i 'nik l I l 7 VE ...--vfjli ,,,,, ai 'Q :fans my 'x 1 2 e ul ful 'ff' 3 Tay nv' 1, udp inf? . l 1.-H' l .,. V ,. vm DEBATING CLUB. Once more it becomes the duty of some one to take up the pen and in a few words give a brief account of the High School Debating Club during its past year. This club, as you already know. is one of the oldest and best organizations of the High School. Its enrollment is large and applications for membership are many. During the winter very interesting debates have been held at the regular meetings and all thefprincipal questions of the day have been discussed. The members have gained much in extemp- oraneous speaking and in the ability to express themselves readily from the fioor. On the night of jan. 6, 1899, We entered into a joint debate with the Riley Business College and in this We were beaten. Though the Riley men were somewhat older and more experienced We feel that the Debating Club maintained their record and made a hard ight. P . A On june zo, 1899, the annual battle with our rival, Congress, will take place. Last year we were victorious and we hope for the results this time. During the spring months the club has held no meetings, feeling that all interest should' be turned towards athletics. And so another successful year has drawn to a close and whenfall comes again the Debating Club will be found in its old place in the ranks of the Binghamton Central High School. ' FRIDAY GLUB. 9 During the past year the club has spent a very enjoyable as well as an instructive time. Different authors have been studied and especialattention has been given to Kipling, Field and Burns. p The teachers that have given us brief talks are ,,Prof. Landon, Miss Webster, Miss Osgood, -Miss Rowell and Miss Carolyne 3Baovvn. The members of thepclub have given some excellent debates., ipr' some prepared and some extemporaneous. They have passed many pleasant' hours with the different, societies, and feel thatthe members of allare close friends. , I The second ,annual banquet and reception, was held Friday evening, Nov. 25, 1898, at the home of Miss BlancheGardiner., Nearly, the entire club were present and the banquetproved a great, success. The menu deserved much credit, being in the form of a gastronomic drama, while toasts and music helped the time to pass all too swiftly. ' Many of 'the older members have left school, but new ones have entered. A large number graduate this year and although the Club will miss them much when they leave the High School, it has still left sufficient energetic members to take their places and go on in the work begun. LITERARY CLUB. The books studied by the Literary Club this year have been those of modern authors. Is for Albright and also for ape They differ but little in action and shape Two Apt Questions The Quality of Mercy Is not Strainedf' Our very great success is largely due to the fact that the quality of every line of goods we handle is just what Shakespeare said about mercy, It is twice blestg it blesses him that gives and him that takes. Our departments appear to the best advantage to buyers who have carefully inspected them, and who then make comparisons, when the decided superiority of our goods is plainly manifest. , 6' A Delicate Thought is a Flower of- the Mind. 1 Time goes on. Artemus Ward says, 'tis a Way time has, and yet the sandy hour glass runs not so rapidly but that human skill and in- genuity keep well apace with it. Time is no laggard, but man's ability is greatg ever experimenting, ever striving after something new. We are no exception to this rule, always ready to add some worthy new- ness to our long lines of perfect goods. In no department is this more noticeable than in our silk stock, where everything is of the newest and most advanced ideas of production. Sisson Brothers Welden.
