Hul-a-ba-lu ! Hul-a-ba-lix ! B. C. H. S.! Ninety-six! LL classes have a beginning, and itis sufficient to say that the . origin of Ninety-six is not lost in the darkness of antiquity, T nor is it the growth of yesterday. It is -the steady develop- ment which has at last borne fruit in producing a class which holds the record for its modesty. There is in this class a spirit of kindness, which went forth and organized' the Class of Ninety-seven, and brought them into existence. Yet, they, in their ingratitude, refused the prof- fered kindness, and sent to us a bill for the expenses of their first meeting. I , 'V . , In the making of class history Ninety-six has been most successful, she has proved herself a most generous class. When one cake was stolen, we presented the thief with another. When, after a cordial in- vitation to the home of one of our young junior friends, admittance was forcibly denied us, we repaid the children by entertaining them in royal style, although they wereunbidden guests. The great event of the year was our pilgrimage to the Springs, from which the healing waters flow. This was the time that our mathematical prodigy tried his new theory of putting two qchaperonsy into oneg but, alas! it proved a failure. This was the time when some went to sleep beneath the robes, and our granger boy went to sleep on his desk. Un this same night the Class of Ninety-seven made their lonesome, voyage to The Point, with only one girl in the party, and this one the chaperon. I ' Parties we have had almost too numerous to mention, and the jolly good times enjoyed will never be forgotten. Our first you would have thought the meeting of all the-gods of mythology, and the fair goddesses were so bashful that they blushingly hid their faces. Who will ever forget the noblespirit that inspired the girls to search for the long white robe, and then to decide that he never had one? Who will ever forget how we skated away from Ninety-seven and sped up the Che- nango? Of the fun we had on our excursion down to the farm, of the snakes we saw, of the good things we put away, of the shadows we chased, mistaking them for juniors, -you will never hear, but they are written' among the pleasant memories of our school days. I might relate many other notable things done by this class, but perhaps you are already weary. Remember that, though the course of Ninety-six is FINISHED in the High School, YET it is but BEGINNING in the broad work of life. C I CLASS DAY EXERCISES. Centenary M. E. In Words, deeds, aims, exploits unique, In wisdom rare, which all men seek, In these, in all We excel our neighbors, And boast the fruit of toils and labors. Ancestors bright have we in Ninety-six's class, But all the same they never think our members to surpass You see we're one great prodigy, A And in some way We probably r Will make our name world-wide ere long, To be extolled in speech and song. As juniors, were the foremost class to entertain. As Seniors, all our girls and boys Weill rightly train. We'll sit with eyes upon our books, And at the end with calmest looks Each one an honor high will win, Though custom old shows off but ten. In later years when people from afar shall come And ask their Way to school, then those Whose home Is here, will say, You mean the place Which, through the Ninety-seven race, Has made its name world-wide. A little grimace novv We make, With vviles as sweet as 'lasses, To those with Whom We'll scrap next year, Qur own loved sister classes. Three-minute meetings we'll never hold Longer than half an hour, Nor 'will pins, and mottoes, and ribbons ever ' Cause us to sulk and sour. We're going to be so nice to you, And generous and polite, We'll gush so over your motto, And. never hint it's trite. About your colors, too, you know, E'en if they are alarming, And look like an impressionist fit, - We'll gush more, and say, Charming! Ah! we will be so nice to you, With kindness almost kill yer, Providing you act nice in turn, And don't get too familiar. For 'tis such capers, understand, That'll make us rile and madden, With a great desire to do you all, A fa Chimmie Fadden. I ' There have been many Seides to our school life this year, some fairly Shineqingl, While taken as a' whole they were All bright. We had alvvays noticed Miss Cohoon's taste for architecture, and so We were doubly surprised to find that her preference was for Barnes, instead of our brick structures- Miss Thompson has come to fill her vacancy, and novv let us warn her to be careful lest some fine day as she wanders among the Graves she may get some hard Knoxg every- thing she has may be Stovvellqenj, but she must let these pass and try not to Kerr. Some of our friends have left school, one especially after whom we all Hankferj. But those who are left try to get on as best they can. And Hnally, as We close our school year, we hope that in the future Miss Qstrom will like a certain gentleman's daughters Or-song that Freeman will get his Campbellg that Clinton will have a Stack of good times this summerg that CCDHoXie's army will keep away g that Barrett's Matt ,OI-Iare will continue to thriveg and that Cleveland's adminis- tration will do Moore good in the future than in the past. So finally We'll close, and we'll all agree that: V Of all fine classes in a line, The best this year is Ninety-nine. 1 Bessie I. Howard. Lora H. Hoyt, A Lena Hughston. y Florence Humphrey. C. is undertaken, for this year has been to the Congress one of marked success. It is with satisfaction that the society has witnessed its growth in membership' and intellectual power, under the new consti- tution. We have confined ourselves to practical subjects, believing that our first duty, while in school, is to Er ourselves for citizenship, in order that we may compensate, in a measure, those who support the school -for our benefit. The attendance this year has been remarkably good, lacking at no time the members necessary for a quorum. Vife wish especially to mention the addition of a large number of members during the year, all of whom have, indeed, proved themselves worthvg and the club promises to enter the beginning of next year with a strong organization. THE FRIDAY CLUB. On October 25, 1395, the High School Friday Club was organized, for the purpose of presenting to the minds of its members the stand- ard works of literature. From the start the society has flourished. The works of Hawthorne, Bryant and Lowell, have been taken up and carefully studied, important topics of the day have been deliber- ated, magazine articles have been read, and the foreign and domestic events have been discussed each week. Shakespeares Tczmzzzg' qf Me Shrew was studied in an especially interesting manner, each part being acted by a member of the Club. The aim of the society is to work along the best lines of literature, and so help to produce good speakers and strong thinkers, to accustom its members to the use of the best English in their every-day lives, and abolish the ruinous use of slang. The Club, in its hrst year, has consisted entirely of ninth and tenth grade students, but we hope, in the ensuing year, to include those of all other grades. V C' We wish the greatest success to our fellow societies. LADIEDS' LITERARY CLUB. One of the most successful events of the year was the literary pub- lic given the Friday evening preceding Easter -vacation. The subject of the program was: '1An Evening with Women Authors. V The authors, Longfellow, Wordsworth, Robert Browning, Milton, Dickens Twain Whittier, Mrs. Browning, Shelley, and Burns, have 1 3 ' . . been discussed at the regular Friday afternoon meetings, according to the following program, except once a month, when a debate was held: 1. Roll can. 7- MUSE 2. Minutes. 8. Editorial. 3. Extemporaneous Speeches. 9. Extemporaneous. 4. Character Sketch of Author. io. Recitation, or Magazine Article. 5. Current Events. II. Reading from Author. 6. Narrative, or Abstract. 162. Discussion. mon SCHOOL DEBATING CLUB. The greater number and greater success of the public events held in connection with the literary societies of the School are suggestive of the good that must come from societies of this character, if fostered by the genuine interest and enthusiasm of the members. ' Graduates of a debating or literary society invariably find them- selves much better acquainted with history, literature, politics, etc., and what is more, able intelligently to discuss such subjects, and to clothe their thoughts in choice and grammatical language. To be good conversationalists, lawyers, or successful in business, men must learn to think rapidly and accurately. To the member of a debating club who has treated debating as an art, extemporaneous speaking becomes a habit. Q ' Our debate this year with the Congress, which was the second joint debate and our fourth public debate, was a most successful affair, held before a very large audience. N ' Some months ago we instituted our oratorical contest, to which all students of the School were eligible, in which several students competed. During the year the H. S. D. C. was most enjoyably entertained at the home of Miss Ely, by the Ladies! Literary Society. F THETA SIGMA. s The past year has been one off unusual profit for the Theta Sigma . ' x 'pl . Socletlf. Although at first we ggreatly missed those who had left our ranks, we soon found other meifibers who, at least in part, filled the Yacfmt P19068 The social evenings we have passed with our Alpha Zeta brothers will long be remembered as among the most pleasant in our history. Each member feels that she has gained much of lasting value from the meetings. Our annual convention Wag held at Schenectady in May, and proved a most profitable gathering. We hope that in the near future we may have the pleasure of entertaining our sisters in Binghamton. The first bereavement since our organization came to us this vear in the death of Miss Mesick, of the Beta Chapter. Though the death of this bright and beloved sister saddened us for a time, it has drawn us closer together, and made us feel that we are united in sorrow as well as in pleasure. Althmlgh not Satifmed, We leave our year's work hopefully, planning much for the future, and determined to make t.he Theta Sigma society beloved by its members and respected in the community. ALPHA. ZETA. T At the beginning of the school year the membership ofthe Gamma Chapter was only six. Since then eleven students have been received into the chapter. Throughout the whole year the regular meetings have been made exceedingly interesting by the attendance ofa large number of honorary members. The sixth anniversary of our chapter was observed December oth. An excellent literary and musical program marked the occasion. During the winter the members enjoyed a sleighride to the home of one of their brothers. ' The annual convention was held at Rochester, April 16 and 17. At this-gathering Gamma was represented' by three of its members. It Was there decided to hold the next conventionat Binghamton. It is the desire and hope of every local A. Z. man that this be made the most successful as well as the most enjoyable convention that Alpha Zeta has ever held. T Qur annual banquet will be held at Hotel Bennett, june 19. AGASSIZ ASSOCIATION. JOHN BURROUGHS CHAPTER. The first year of the Agassiz Association has been a most success- ful one. At the first of the year it was deemed best to broaden the work, and to take in other branches of science besides photography. Accordingly, it was decided to change the old Camera Club into a chap- ter of the Agassiz Association. Meetings have been held this year in the laboratory every Monday afternoon at four o'clock. The programs have consisted of the read- ing of Scientific papers, experiments, and occasional lectures and lantern-slide exhibitions. The important event of the year in this society was the pub- lic entertainment given on the evening of April 24. The program was most successfully carried out. t l 895 FOOTBALL TEAM ATHLETICS. At the end of this school year will close the most successful year in athletics the High School has ever seen. Through the enthusiasm and earnest efforts of the students of former years, athletics have come to be recognized here in a just and deserved manner. There is now in connection with the School an athletic association, and athletics of all kinds are under the management of this club. During the past year the club has been reorganized, a new constitution adopted, and the association put on a much stronger foundation than before. The officers were elected in accordancewith the new consti- tution as follows: President, Joseph Hickey, Vice-President, john O. McCall, Secretary, james Q. Gulnac, Treasurer Elliott Marean. In the future it is hoped that this will be made the largest and most successful club in the School. Our Football Team, last fall, did excellent work, and are deserving of much praise. T They started at the beginning of. the season with the darkest prospects, but, nevertheless, they finished in a most praise- worthy manner. During the season they played nine games, losing four, tying one, and winning four, not a very bad record, considering the teams with which they played. Next season is looked forward to with the keenest interest by all the students. Then, for the first time, a team will be organized com- posed wholly of High School students, and there is no doubt but that the team will'be as strong as any in its line. - Early in the spring an athletic team was placed in the gymnasium of the Binghamton Athletic Association, and another in that of the Young Men's Christian Association. Although these teams did not do as well as they might have done, yet through them has been accom- plished what has long been desired, that of placing track athletics in the School on ag firm foundation. On May 9 was held our second annual field day, this was a success in every way, large delegations coming from Syracuse, Cortland and Keystone Academy, to participate in the games A handsome silver cup was offered as a prize to the team winning the greatest number of points, and costly medals and merchandise were given as first and second prizes. The cup was won by Syracuse, excellent work, how- ever, being done by our boys, and their standing shows that they are to be relied upon in the future. A On june 6 a team, under the direction of Captain- Nlfeed, was sent to Buffalo, to represent the B. C. H. S. at the. annual interscholastic meet, and, in every way and manner, they did justice and honor to the School. Athletics are gaining interest, not only among the great body of students, but among the citizens as well. Inthe years to come we hope to see the standing of the School, in this line, at the head, and with the assistance of the scholars and their friends this can be accomplished. r .izEm,RifL :asap iii 2 I I 'M 'A . , 1,ye-- - - fiyv, A g i-Lg y cgi -A A j k oi., ' .V i,f , - .,g' wg i 1 f f p 1 at Wi i f fy Q W 17 f f f in if, , . f 7- mp' i ,I M, fp. t 'W :ff W W fa- 'ff 'I -f fi '. -- . .1 mf, ,ZZ W EZ' .g For f r' if i ii ff i i f lf V X lj f fi f W if Ji ig f , il ' ' 'f Q! fs ff'zWff'6 :Fifi if ' ,, 1 ZW B i 524' J iff' so W if c lil' ,M mf if o A M - 11' 1 ' ' l i , A4560 S' 'U ig fffifflfgf' Ai! The opening of the Barlow School of Industrial Arts, in connec- tion with the High School, in September, will be an event of far- reaching consequence in the educational history of Binghamton. It is now recognized by all educational authorities that a wisely arranged course in manual training contributes very largely to the intellectual and moral development of the young, and has the additional advantage of giving a good preparation for entering into the varied vocations Of practical life. Many pupils who do not show any taste for book knowl- edge succeed well in the line of the mechanical and industrial arts, and it is for this class of pupils that the Barlow School is especially adapted- The world is beginning to recognize the fact that skill in manual occu- l9H'CiO11S demands a high order of brain power, and that those habits Of accuracy developed in such a course of training as the Barlow SC11001 will provide, are as necessary as those habits of precision acquired in litgraldf and Seientific studies. Whetliei' the pupil expects to earn his hvmg by manual labor or not, the training which he will receive in the K Barlow School will be of the very highest value when Carfied into other lines of work. g A 'I The work will be so arranged that pupils in the regular courses Of the High School can take some of the courses in the Barlow School. For those who wish to enter only the Industrial School the courses will be so planned as to occupy all their time. In general, the WC-,fk Wm consist of English, the elements of constructive geometry, drawing, wood-working, iron-working, and the like. The courses in drawing will prepare pupils for further work in drafting, architecture, and en- gineering. In short, the courses will be so arranged as to fit boys and girls for specific trades and occupations, and at the same time to give them wider views, more facile power, and a broader culture than the mere learning of a trade in the usual way can give. The founder of the Barlow School of Industrial Arts needs no grander monument than the institution itself. I THE FOUNDER OF THE BARLOW SCHOOL S OF INDUSTRIAL ARTS. 'As people become more familiar with the design of the Barlow School of Industrial Arts, there is a desire to know something of the lifefhistory of the man whose munificence has brought such a school within reach of every boy and girl in our city. Allan Barlow was born in Windham, in I8IO, and passed his boy- hood on a farm, a large part of which was uncleared. Up to the age of ten years he had but little schooling, but during the next five years he attended a district school. He learned' readily, and at the age of sixteen he began teaching in a country school. having among his pupils some of his former schoolmates. Feeling the need of more advanced training, he spent two years in Philips Academy, Andover, where he received an excellent equipment for the work of life. .After teaching for several years, he went into business. Some notion of the primitive character of the life of this period of his career may be had in the statement, that after his marriage he cut, hewed and dragged logs from his father's farm ten milesaway, and built a house of three rooms. Growing tired of the confinement of a business life, he learned the carpenters' trade, at which he worked for 310 per month. In 1849 he caught the gold fever, and was soon in California seek- ing his fortune. y After working for some time as a carpenter, he began prospecting for gold, and was fortunate enough to find several valuable nuggets, one of which was worth ilE1,2oo. He spent four years in Cali- fornia, and then returned to his former home with 353,000 as the result of his search for gold. In 1853 he came to Broome County, where he spenththe rest of his life working at the carpenters' trade, clerking in a drug store, and dealing in real estate. He clerked iifteen years for Erastus Ross. At one time he held the office of U. S. Guager. . Mr. Barlow died in Binghamton in 1894, leaving property worth nearly 3f51oo,ooo as an endowment for the Barlow School of Industrial Arts, an institution which will exercise an untold iniiuence for good in this community. Mr. Barlow was a man of great energy, strict integrity and a ine sense of honor. Remembering his early struggles, he resolved to de- vote his energies to the accumulation of a fortune with which to found a school that would train boys and girls to earn an honest living. That he did not fail in his noble purpose is attested by the fact that the School of Industrial Arts stands ready to receive without money and without price any boy or girl desiring to take advantage of the opportunity it offers. Such men as Allan Barlow are benefactors of the noblest type. - i it if: A . ' I 15 f ' J I 5' Xiu 7f! -K ,gg , I 1 I I 1 I 1 1 fox 1' is -I' 1 if lm? gg! ti AVIS f f llivfb K 'gilxxli 'X sw . The city of Binghamton contains one of the most interesting antiques which ever existed. It is placed, for some unknown reason, on the rostrum in the High School. Nevertheless, it is considered so valuable that, although it is trampled by the feet of -the students, no broom has ever been allowed to dehle it, and it is so old that the Board of Education dare not entrust it to the tender mercies of the carpet- cleaner. Its value is somewhat impaired by the fact that a rent has been made in it, through the carelessness of some thoughtless students. Also, because of the fact that it is so liable to tear, it has been deemed unwise to take it up permanently. And thus it seems that this antique will come to its end through old age, coupled with constant use, much as the old suspension bridge. However, any person desiring to obtam this valuable article, can probably purchase it for a reasonable price. p w A FABLE. However, no one questioned the wisdom of his action, and affairs soon jogged on at their accustomed pace. IMMORAL.-Keep your jaws cool in summer and warm in winter, in order that they may be worked to the best advantage at all times. STILL ANOTHER. The High School has a Mrs. Lamb, Q She keeps things white as snow, And when she comes with broom and pan, The students have to go. She happened in too soon one day, Which was against the rule, It made the youngsters laugh and play, s When she braced into school. And so she turned the scholars out, But still they lingered near, And j ollied up with laugh and shout A Till Frederick did appear. T . HENRY STURGES ELY. PROSCRIPTIONS OF IVIARIUS AND SULLA. QACCORDING TO A HISTORY STUDENTJ Marius was the official Roman' druggist and soda-water dealer. He put up prescriptions for the noble only, and charged ten cents for ice- cream soda. Well, Sulla dropped in one day for a little nip, and because Marius didn't have a three hundred and fifty dollar license, he had him arrested. Then he quietly stepped behind the counter, and Pllf 6219 license in the window. He did a rushing business and put UP fflghtl' P1'GSC1'iptions the first day. Une of the most important educational factorsffor such it may be called-in Binghamton, is T he flame Magazzhe. Although published primarily in the interests of commercial travelers, its reading matter is by no means confined to the interests of this one class. On the con- trary, its stai'I of contributors includes many of the brightest and ablest writers of the day, and its contents are noteworthy for high lit- erary value. Its illustrations, both in quality and copiousness, rank well among our national magazines. In typographical appearance it is excellent. Its circulation is national, and Binghamton is fortunate in possessing a means by which her name is so widely carried throughout America. V The magazine has received high praise from prominent writers and periodicals, among many others, Gen, Lew Wallace, Ella Wheeler Wilcox, Dr. Lewis Swift, and the New York T zmes, the Melbourne lAustralial T fezfzxeler, the Philadelphia Record, and the New York Press. These are but a few from the avalanche of commendations. Said Gen. Lew Wallace some months ago: The last number of your magazine was excellent. If you can keep that pace, it is bound to go up into the leaders. It is generally acknowledged that his prophecy has now been fulfilled. The editor, Mr. William Mill- Butler, is to be congratulated upon the success which the magazine has achieved under his direction. T he Holzze ilfezgazzhe is published by the Commercial Travelers' Home Association of America, and toward the Commercial Travelers' Home, which that organization is erecting, goes every dollar of prolit realized from the publication. l 1 fi i'T7d gli AWN I up I o I 'lf -2255 X D ff ff i Q lf , 6 - I L,,.. .'.L--1 ' i ' INIS i In ' I Hills, McLean 6: Haskins INVITE INSPECTION OF THEIR LARGE ASSORTMENT OF , Q - M ER DRESS oooo Silks, Parasols, Wraps, Jackets, Kid Gloves, Fans, Laces, Hosiery, Ribbons, Dress Trimmings, Shirt Waists, Ready:Made Suits, Fancy Goods, Perfumes, , Handkerchiefs, Muslin Underwear, Corsets, Child: ren's and Infants' Ready:Made Wear, Summer lflil: linery, Etc.
