CAUGHT STANDING IN THE REIGN Victory In The Midst of Defeat. Homecoming night was the perfect representation of the entire football season. Hopes of victory were washed away in a downpour of rain. Students witnessed yet another defeat, this time at the hands of Hattiesburg, in a long string of disappointments. The brightest spot of the dark night came before the opening kickoff. Fifteen shadowy figures made their way across the field, led by their escorts. Despite the continuous drizzle of rain which left their flowing dresses flapping at their sides, they managed to keep their heads held high. Smiling brightest on that long night was Nanette Travis, who was crowned Homecoming Queen 1986. Nanette, accompanied by her escort, James Hartley, was presented a sparkling diadem and red roses as signs of royalty. Chosen Maid of Honor was Shelli Gary, who was escorted by John Znachko. The fifteen maids were chosen by the football team. The new queen and her entourage did not allow their spirits to be dampened by the rainy defeat. They served to bolster the entire student body on a night which would have otherwise been viewed as a dismal failure. Each and every student was able to hold his head high along with his queen in the face of bitter disappointment and say, WE GO WHERE OUR DREAMS TAKE US. James Herring.
