The program is one of only seventeen in the world to achieve honor unit three years in a row. The unit has also won the state championship for Drill Team and Color Guard. Lt. Col. Varble received an M.A. from Pepperdme University. He served his country in Vietnam as a pilot from July 1968 to August 1969. His activities also include work with the Boy Scouts, the Toastmasters, and the PTA. Lt. Col. Music is as much a part of teenage life as going out and being with friends. Tunes can be heard blaring from car stereos on back campus both before and after school. It is a constant battle to see who can own the loudest car stereo system. The kinds of music that students listen to are as diverse as their personalities. Some enjoy the hard rock music of names such as Van Halen, Ratt, Quiet Riot, Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, and Ozzy Osbourne. Others prefer New Wave bands such as The Smiths, New Order, UB 40, U2, the Pet Shop Boys, the Violent Femmes, Depeche Mode, The Cure, and OMD. Still other teens enjoy a relatively new form of music called Christian Rock. Stand-outs in this field are Amy Grant, Carmen, and Striper. Groups like Run-DMC have also made their mark at Biloxi High. Being a part of the South, Biloxi teens also have country fans among them. Names of artists include Alabama. Willie Nelson. Hank Williams Jr., and the Judds. Music from the sixties experienced a revival this year. The Beatles made a hit with their re-release of Twist and Shout. The single caused interest among an age group formerly not very familiar with the Beatles. Another group making a comeback was the Monkees. Some of the original members met again to record a new single, That Was Then, This Is Now, and to make a reunion tour. Students flock to record stores to buy the latest hits that they may hear on the radio or see on the still-popular MTV. Teens in Biloxi also have many chances to see their favorite groups in concert at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum, which attracts many top recording stars. If the coliseum does not offer enough, there are many choices a short drive away. Groups appear in New Orleans at UNO Lakefront and at the Superdome. Groups also perform in Mobile and Pensacola. Music is a major part of the academic life at Biloxi High School. These programs allow the students to understand what goes into the music that they listen to every day. Teens listen to a very diverse range of music Just some of these are represented here. Randy Jones mixes music with studying Although Walkmans are outlawed on campus, many try to sneak by so that they can listen to tunes
