Right: Suzanne Bienvenue is one of many student body members who regularly arrive on campus by bus. 1982 marks the fourth year of free bus service for students living more than one mile from the school. 4 Above: Wally Taylor opts for one of the healthiest and least expensive forms of transit — bicycling! School Days, School Days After three months of freedom, school bells tolled again on September 2, and the 1982 school year was underway. “Back to school” meant returning to the daily grind of alarm clocks and homework, but many students looked forward to a pro- mising new football season, the arrival of class rings, and cat- ching up on all the latest gossip. Left: Chris Dwelle demonstrates what the well-dressed preppy egg baby wore for fall. Caring for egg babies for two days was one of the first assignments of the term in Child Development classes. Below Right: Many Biloxi High students exercised the privilege of driving their own cars to school. In spite of excessive gas costs, it remains the favored form of transportation. 5 Heatwave Thanks to customary high nineties temperatures, the Biloxi School System operated on a half-day basis until September 25. As Biloxi High was one of the few local “air cooled schools, floor fans and water fountains were put to good use during the first sweltering month of the school year. Students welcomed half days as an opportunity to make sum- mer fun last just a big longer, but unfortunate facul- ty members were required to remain in the sizzling classrooms until 4:00 PM every day. Above Left: Muppet Miss Piggy provided the inspira- tion for this entry in the an- nual Gulf Publishing Com- pany Sand Sculpture Con- test. held on September 19. tilled Piggy's Pearl of the Ocean. Above Right: Ron- nie Wilson beams in satisfaction at having a fan all to himself during a par- ticularly warm afternoon. Right Far Right: Cafeteria lunch sales suffered an all- time low during half days. Few students had the ap- petite to down a midday meal whan A lunch started at 10:20 A.M. 6 Above Left: Band member Kim Drummond cools off in sum- mer bare clothes during a break in rehearsal. Above Right: Jeff Scott seeks liquid relief from blistering temperatures. Middle: A two-headed serpent is another example of the fanciful creatures that grew out of the beach at the Sand Sculpture contest. Lower Left: Coach Worthy McClure beats the noon heat with a quick dip in the pool. Lower Right: The final 1:00 PM half-day bell signaled the beginning of after-school prac- tice for Biloxi High athletes. 7 Above Left: Alan Collins splashes between the folds of the pool's protective covering, w hich helps to keep the water at a bearably warm temperature. Above Right: Robin Frey provides encourage- ment for an elementary school girl attempting to stay afloat. Right: This group of Biloxi High boys shows more interest in having those pearly whites captured by the camera than Coach Worthy McClure’s lecture on the perils of horseplay. 8 Left: Riley Butler. Taking the Plunge Biloxi High students are finally beginning to enjoy the benefits of having an Olympic sized swimming pool on the school’s grounds. Although physical education students ap- preciated the advantages of its sparkling blue waters last May, this will be its first full school year of use. Biloxi High students currently giv- ing swimming lessons to elementary school children in our new pool agree that plunging in- to the waves is a welcome alternative to overheated classrooms and a most pleasant way to revive a fading tan. 9 Below: Biloxi High’s majorettes were among the first to spot pedal pushers, making them part of their early morning pep rally uniforms. Changes: On the Local __________Front...________________ Over the course of the summer, many changes took place that would affect the daily lives of Biloxi High students. The school dress code was revised to suit the current fashion scene. As pants went to all lengths, girls were permitted to wear slacks such as knickers or pedal pushers, provided that they covered the knee. In the name of comfort, both the male and female population of Biloxi High were allowed at last to attend class in tank tops. After several years of construction, the widening of Pass Road neared completion. Mississippi was eyed as a likely candidate for a nuclear waste site, and Coastians joined forces in protest. Above Right: Romantic blouses, low-heeled pumps, and newly-authorized knickers made fashion news this fall. Above: A typical sight during the reconstruction of Pass Road. Left: Junior John Gutierrez did his part to help the cause of the anti-nuclear waste movement. Right: This familiar orange sign has been a Pass Road staple for years. 5!ssissiPPi FREE OF nuclear waste Left: Any male arriving at school in this type of top last year would probably have been sent home. The updated dress code now allows James Allen to wear his muscle shirt in peace. Above Right: Yet another supporter of Citizens Against Nuclear Disposal. 11 Above Left: Lack of financial aid under the Reagan ad- ministration forced students to fine means of paying for their future educations. Business was brisk well through the start of school for Dipper Dan employees Darin Cole, Sheryl Seaton, and Scott Kea. Above Right: Virtually every major fashion magazine ran a feature on the Lady Di cut and how to get it, which just goes to show that senior Linda Cochran was ahead of her time — she's worn her hair in this pretty style for years! Middle: Limited government funding boosted school lunch prices from sixty to ninety cents. Some students preferred to ap- ply the money toward an afternoon snack at McDonald's. Lower Left: Biloxi High's baseball team kept its spirit high despite the strike that crippled major league baseball for the summer. 12 Nationwide Nationwide, President Reagan’s proposed budget cuts made headlines, with financial aid for college students and school lunch programs being slashed. Sports fans mourned the major league baseball strike, which lasted through most of the summer months. Royal romance sparked inter- national interest, as England’s Prince Charles headed for the altar to wed Lady Diana Spencer on July 29. Left: Ronald Reagan with wife Nan- cy in a pre-election appearance at the August 3, 1980. Neshoba County Fair, held in Philadelphia, Mississippi. Left: June 2 elections made Gerald Blessey Biloxi’s first mayor under the city council form of government. Above Right: Reagan onstage with Congressman Trent Lott at the county fair. 13 16 Nell Bishop: A Special Kind of Teacher It has been said that a student is lucky to have had one really good teacher in his or her lifetime. Nell Bishop falls into this category of teachers. She has been a faculty member at Biloxi High for six years, serving as the chair- man of the mathematics department for the last five. Her students describe her as warm, bright, and efficient. She teaches with a rare zeal and serves as a mentor to her many ad- miring students. With this in mind, we, the annual staff, enthusiastically dedicate the 1982 Indian Echo to Ms. Nell Bishop. 18 Biloxi High’s 1981 Homecoming was kicked off with the annual Spirit Week, held on October 12-16. Dress-up days were Tacky Day, Wild West Day, Little Kids Day, Crazy Hat Day, and Indian Spirit Day. The Student Council also spon- sored the annual Spirit Chain Com- petition. Paper chain links in the col- ors red, white, and black were sold for a nickel apiece, with all money raised by the class producing the longest chain to be donated to the class treasury. First place winner was the Senior Class, with the Sophomore and Junior Classes garnering second and third positions. School was dismissed at half-day in preparation for the Homecoming Day festivities, including the tradi- tional Homecoming Parade. A Celebration of Spirit Above Left: Rhomi Tripp and Ann Esposito. Efforts of Many Lenc 76 bright Facets to School Life 77 Biloxi High boasts an amazingly large and versatile staff of faculty members. Many of our seventy-two teachers have had careers as singers, journalists, and military personnel before accepting their present posi- tions. Educational standards have stiffened considerably, as approx- imately 86% of the faculty hold a Masters degree in some form — Masters of Education, Masters of Science, and Masters of Arts, in par- ticular. Although several staff members hail from colleges as far away as Arkansas or Nebraska, an unsurprising 86% have attended col- lege in Mississippi at one time or the other. Of the teachers educated in Mississippi, 76% of them believed in that “Eagle Fever,” having studied at the University of Southern Mississippi. Only William Carey came close in popularity, drawing a relatively small 31%. 78 100 79 100 90 — 80 — 70 — 60 — 50 — 40 — 76% of the faculty attending college in Mississippi were enrolled at the University of Southern Mississippi. 30 — 31% of the faculty attending college in Mississippi were enrolled at William Carey College. keeping It All in the Family Many faculty members are Biloxi High alumni. Teachers Joe Duffie, Gloria Guyton, and Bonnie Hamilton are but a few of the Biloxi High School graduates. Coach Lloyd Seymour played varsity football for the Indians, assistant band director Bruce Garner was voted “Most Talented,” and vocational depart- ment teacher Johnny Conde was chosen “Cutest.” Teaching is a family matter among many staff members. Husband-and-wife teams include Coach Worthy McClure and Sue McClure, and Dr. Olon Ray and Ann Ray; Principal Frank Sabbatini and Coach Joe Sabbatini are brothers; Sherrie Pomierski is the daughter of retired marching band director Prof Marion Carpenter. Faculty members Ruth Bell, Gayle Bentz, Nell Bishop. Kenneth Deere, Frank Sabbatini, Joe Sabbatini, Carol Stewart, and Helen Toms all have children currently attending Biloxi High. 81 Student Council Serves You STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS — Front Row: Karen Bull — Treasurer, Ed Bell Parliamentarian. The team won the Shrimp Bowl, in which they defeated Archbishop Shaw 21-8. The varsity offense was led by the running skills of Jeff Schlosser and Brian Ducksworth. Biloxi High's B-team went undefeated with a 7-0 record and hopes to have a successful season next year as the varsity team. The sophomore team had a record of 5-3-1. Regardless of the win-loss records, all the teams and coaches should be commended for all the hard work and long hours they have put towards the football program at Biloxi High. In their season opener, Biloxi defeated the Harrison Central Red Rebels 27-0. The stingy Indian defense allowed only 117 yards for the Rebels, while the Biloxi offense gained 207 yards. Brian Ducksworth scored the first touchdown on a 6-yard run and led the offense with 80 yards rushing. With 8:33 left in the third quarter, Kevin Burdine passed to Franchot Cannan in the end- zone. On his first touchdown of the night, Charles Perkins ran through the Rebel defense, and Burdine threw to him for the third score. Perkins ran back a punt for 70 yards and the final touchdown. The defensive hero was Jeff Hill, who recovered a fumble and stopped the Red Rebels late in the game to preserve the shutout. Defense was the name of the game as Biloxi roared to a 33-10 victory over Ocean Springs. Ocean Springs had only 17 yards rushing to Biloxi's 299. Ernest Williams, Tommy Hebert, and Bil- ly Page each had interceptions, while Danny Kavanaugh had a fumble recovery. Leading the offense was Brian Ducksworth who rushed for 151 yards and I touchdown. Tailback Jeff Schlosser added 98 yards. Charles Perkins and Tommy Searight had two touchdowns each. Perkins scored on a 35-yard pass from Kevin Burdine. 132 BHS 14 Sophomore Team D'Iberville 14 BHS 8 Moss Point 19 BHS 29 Picayune 0 BHS 14 Moss Point 20 BHS 36 D’Iberville 20 BHS 0 Picayune 17 BHS 20 Moss Point 18 BHS 14 St. Martin 13 BHS 7 Moss Point 6 This year’s sophomore team was led by quarterback Jeff Holloway, who had a fine season passing and scored five touchdowns himself. Other players scoring touchdowns were Sherman Weston, Christopher Surian, Adrian Link, and Tony Hill. Biloxi’s first defeat of the year came at the hands of the Pascagoula Panthers, who won by a score of 24-20. Although Biloxi outrushed Pascagoula 197 yards to 169, they could not put a passing game together. Scoring for Biloxi were Jeff Schlosser on a 1-yard run and Brian Ducksworth’s runs of I and 10 yards. Ducksworth finished the night with 169 yards. Aided by Jeff Schlosser’s two touchdown runs from 1 and 10 yards out, Biloxi was victorious over the Moss Point Tigers, 27-14. Schlosser also had 135 yards rushing, while Brian Ducksworth carried for 57 yards. Ducksworth added a touchdown of his own on a 4-yard carry. The game-winning touchdown came on a 25- yard pass form Kevin Burdine to Charles Perkins. The Biloxi Indians were surprised as Jackson Callaway upset them 20-7. Tailback Jeff Schlosser scored the only touchdown for Biloxi when he sprinted 23 yards for the touchdown late in the first period. Even though the Biloxi offense gained 326 yards to Jackson’s 264, it was not enough to overcome the numerous penalties and fumbles. 133 On a wet field, the Gulfport Admirals defeated Biloxi 9-0. The Indians could gain only 106 yards. They fumbled twice and were intercepted three times. The game was uneventful, except, of course, for Gulfport fans. Brian Ducksworth had 37 yards rushing. Biloxi won its fourth game by defeating Picayune 16-14 before a homecoming crowd. Jeff Schlosser ran 65 yards on 18 carries. The leading rusher was Brian Ducksworth with 84 yards. Biloxi's first touchdown came on a 1-yard sneak by Kevin Burdine. Richard Hunt added a 31-yard field goal late' in the third period. The final score came when Larry Byrd rambled 44 yards for a touchdown. Jeff Holloway recovered a kick. Safety Billy Page had an interception. The defense held Picayune to 174 yards to Biloxi's 274 yards. 134 Outstanding Players Receive Recognition Upper Left: Junior football players that went to Biloxi Regional Medical Center to give candy canes to the children at Christmas. The Biloxi offense at- tained 330 yards to Meridian's 101. Kevin Burdine had his best game, com- pleting 10 of 18 passes for 151 yards and one touchdown. Both the offense and the defense put on a good performance. Biloxi lost its final game of the regular season to North Natchez, 26- 14. Biloxi's first touchdown was on a pass from Kevin Burdine to Franchot Canaan. Jeff Schlosser had a touchdown on a 9-yard run, and also finished the game with 120 yards. Many students have discovered that this maddening little toy really can be done! Whether they read the solution in one of the many “how to” books currently on the market, or figured it out on their own remains to be seen. What could possibly be next? Above: One of many variations on the Rubik’s original. Above: The fast selling novelty in its basic form. Because more and more jobs are demanding com- puter expertise, the computer science class, taught by Mrs. Susan Barnes, has become one of the most sought after one- semester courses on campus. Students who create programs for school computers agree that the class is a most interesting alternative to Biloxi High’s stan- dard curriculum. College bound seniors Roger Joyner and Terry Dougharty pick up computer skills that will likely prove valuable in their future careers. Many big attractions, from Lawrence Welk to Journey, have appeared at the coliseum in past years. Re- cent local concerts have included Pat Benatar, Foreigner, Kenny Rogers, Van Halen, and the Commodores. Stu- dent attendance is large, as is evident by the flock of con- cert shirts seen on campus following a performance. Above Left, Right: The Foreigner concert was uneventful, but at Pat Bcnatar’s Coastal appearance, a pre-concert bomb threat demanded temporary evacuation of the coliseum. In addition to their in- volvement in school- sponsored organizations, many students chose to join one of Biloxi’s four social clubs — Phi Kappa, Bonnie Debs, Debuteens, or Junior Miss. Clubs membership is much sought after, as is evidenced by the pitiful herd of pledges, who forsake con- versation, shampoo, and coordinating clothes for a period of one week in hopes of becoming associated with a local group. “Going Greek” obviously isn’t for everyone, but it does offer a sense of belonging and an opportunity to develop lasting friendships. 201 John Mundy Chris Murphy Steve Narbo Charles Nelson James Ness David New Thom Newman Ha Nguyen Minh Nguyen Xuyen Nguyen Mike Nieberlein Cathy Nix Bobby Ochoa David Odom Jeff Olesen Patti O’Neil Steve Pace Tommy Pantelias Zzzzzzzz Sleeping has been traditionally considered a pet pastime of teens, but part-time jobs, ac- tive social schedules, and heavy course loads often interferred with getting in those crucial eight hours. In a most unusual trend, the explosive rebirth of interest in the Ivy League look is heading into its second fashion season. Rather than opting for the wildest, most flamboyant look possible, as was the style in the sixties and early seventies, Biloxi High students live in such preppy must-haves as Izods, top-siders, and oxford shirts that could just have easily been the cornerstones of Mummy and Daddy’s high school wardrobes. Preppy clothes must be useful as well as cute, and come in a wide variety of key col- ors, including khaki, navy blue, hot pink, and lime green. Not only do preppy clothes have the advantage of wearing well and looking great, they are up to the minute any year. Excellent! Left: Robbie Miles, in the look that only a preppy could love. Students giving blood were required to be at least seventeen years old and weigh 100 pounds. Thirty-three potential donors were turned away due to medical problems. Nonetheless, “Be nice to me, I gave blood today” stickers were seen all over school throughout the day, with Biloxi High students having rallied to donate a total of sixty-nine pints. Erratic weather changes are a part of the day-to-day existence on the Gulf Coast, and such changes are as plentiful as they are un- predictable. Temperatures might mandate short sleeve shirts one day, and sweaters and jackets the next. Thick fog and 100% humidity are not at all uncommon, nor is a rain spell that might last for weeks. The majority of Biloxi High students agree that mild winters and warm summer days are just ideal for life on the Coast, but even the most ardent beach bums yearn for an occa- sional snowfall. Above: Thanks to one of Mother Nature’s quirks, soggy Indians battled the Gulfport Ad- mirals in ankle-deep mud. Not even the persistent downpouring of rain could dampen the loyalty of Biloxi’s fans despite the subsequent 9-0 loss. Lees, Levis, Chic, and Gloria Vanderbilt jeans were student body favorites, but Calvin Kleins were the top choice on campus. What came between many students and their Calvins was a lot of money — about forty-five dollars, to be ex- act — but the combination of good looks and good fit proved irresistible. Jeans with that familiar red and white label could be spotted by the dozens in the halls of Biloxi High. For the last two years, the Daily Herald has published a supplementary to the Tuesday evening paper titled Under the Gap. Written for pupils in grades one through twelve, the paper is produced by high school teens across the Coast. Any event of importance to students finds its way into the Gap, as well as puzzles, record charts, and reviews. Two Biloxi High students are currently staff members of the Gap; senior Roger Stewart serves as a reporter, and sophomore Pam Crotwell is a photographer. Gap staff members battle many of the same problems that plage Herald workers, having to contend with out-of-focus pictures, teletype computers that “eat” stories, and the ever-present deadlines. 215 L. Most students have become accustomed to the twosomes with the tongue-twistingly similar names, but faculty members still struggle to distinguish between the seemingly identical students. Anyone well acquainted with twins has no trouble separating the brothers or sisters, as most twins develop highly individualistic personalities, but school records frequently become crossed. The primary reason expressed for getting these jobs is to increase money for social ac- tivities such as dating, movies, etc. Wages range from $1.80 to $4.10 per hour, but no matter what the going rate is, it is never enough as far as the employees are concerned. Most students agree that their jobs did not interfere with schoolwork as long as working hours stayed under thirty hours per week, but the irony of it all is that although jobs have indeed increased spending money, they have, in fact, decreased time for active social lives. The striking good looks of many Biloxi High teens have prompted photographers to preserve those pretty faces, and their likenesses can be found on display in camera shops throughout the Gulf Coast. Inflation, unemployment, and assassination attempts were on the rise, much to the distress of President Reagan’s newly empowered administra- tion. Having bounced back from a bullet wound inflicted in a March, 1981 attack, Reagan faced a troubled staff, with Richard Allen’s questioned bribe accep- tance from Japanese reporters, and budget director David Stockman’s blunt confes- sion that “No one really knows what is go- ing on with all of these numbers.” But some good news was welcomed in, as James Brady slowly recovered, Sandra Day O’Connor was appointed as the first female Supreme Court Justice, and the Prince and Princess of Wales awaited the arrival of their royal heir. Talent abounded in 1982 in the music business, with such reliable entertainers as Billy Joel, Olivia Newton-John, and the Rolling Stones topping the charts. Diana Ross and REO Speedwagon made com- ebacks, with newcomers Rick Springfield, Sheena Easton, the Go-Go’s, Billy Squier exploding on to the music scene. Biloxi High had its own share of musical talent, with singers Wally Taylor, Lorena Bon- nett, and Suzy Deere garnering the highest awards in the Biloxians-Phillips College Talent Search. Senior Sheryl Seaton, crowned Sweetheart Queen” performed “You Needed Me on her violin in the talent division of hte contest. Blockbuster hits such as “Bette Davis Eyes,” “Endless Love,” “Physical, and “Arthur’s Theme,” all made it to the top positions of the charts, as did the movies that many of the songs came from. Box of- fice reports were dismal on the whole, but we thrilled to such fantasies as Superman , Raiders of the Lost Art, Tarzan, Ar- thur. and Time Bandits. 250 251 A grab-bag of the events of 1982.. . winners . . deaths . . disasters . . cheers . . chills. . trends . . Former Biloxi High students Roger Smith and Chip Auburn. Goodbye. fellows .. . 1 252 Tragedy played a hand in the deaths of the famous and not-so-famous people this past year. Singer songwriter Harry Chapin died in an auto wreck; Egyptian President Anwar Sadat was murdered in open fire; beautiful actress Natalie Wood drowned; comedian Paul Lynde and rock legend Bill Haley suffered heart attacks. We said our personal farewells to two former Biloxi High students. Annual staff member Chip Auburn, Class of 1980, died from a brain tumor less than two years after leaving Biloxi High; Roger “Scotty Smith was killed in an automobile accident in Gautier two months prior to his 1981 graduation. In an attempt to avoid such future tragedies, fifty Biloxi High School seniors participated in a mock disaster drill to test emergency services in the local area. The “Disaster” occurred after an imaginary track and field meet held at the Lee Street stadium. An explosion resulted in the in- juries to the students, including shock, burns, protruding bones, and concussions. Having already received make-up jobs prior to the alarm, the victims' injuries were evaluated for seriousness, and the students were rushed to local hospitals for treatment. Students headed to the hospitals again, when the Biloxi High Football team visited the shut-ins at Biloxi Regional Medical Center. The team came equipped with clowns, balloons, candy, presents, and of course, a Santa Claus, to spread the good cheer of the chilly season. 253 However, the real chills of winter came several weeks after Christmas. Temperatures on the Coast dropped to the teens as Mississippi, as well as the rest of the nation, experienced the worst cold wave in decades. Iced-over bridges kept many students home, and the dangerous conditions forced repeated cancella- tion of classes. As always, the zaniest changes of the year came about on the fashion scene. Buccaneer blouses, culottes, and designer anything livened up the closets full of basic preppy clothing acquired in 1980-81. Metallics added glitz to the olive drab and camouflage fabrics seen everywhere, in the form of purses, belts, ballet flats, and leaf earrings. Costume looks became fun in the form of pants in all lengths and styles, with such fanciful touches as side slits, cropped to mid-calf, and gathered to a v-yoked waistband. The sixties and early seventies came back in full force in the form of minis, ankle- high, flat heeled boots, and head- bands knotted across the forehead. “Whimsical” was the word for 1981-82’s amusements. “Pac Man Fever,” paying homage to the favorite electronic past time, that in- spired its spin-off “Ms. Pac Man, was a hit novelty song. Brooke Shields reigned yet another year as the Queen of Cover Girls, and General Hospital’s Luke and Laura were tops in the newlywed depart- ment. Enthusiasm for frequent cor- respondence with college pals wanted as postal rates climbed, with the 15 and 18 cent stamps both giving way to the C series costing 20 cents per lick. Jogging togs were sought out for their practicality as well as their popular looks, as body-conscious types finished off their 1982 look with a pair of Nikes sporting that familiar side swoosh. 254 So this hus 982! 255 260 Abbcnantc.
