ECHO 198 1 Editor Mary Sumrall Advisor Jane Truax Jiloxi High School Biloxi, Miss. I INDIAN The Log of a Great Voyage All times I have enjoyed Greatly, have suffered greatly; both with those That loved me, and alone; 4 Iam become a name; For always roaming with a hungry heart, Much have I seen and known; cities of men And manners, climates, councils, governments, Myself not least, but honored of them all; And drunk delight of battle with my peers, Iam a part of all that I have met; Yet all experience is an arch wherethrough Gleams that untraveled world whose margin fades Forever and forever when I move. 8 9 And this gray spirit yearning in desire To follow knowledge like a sinking star, Beyond the utmost bound of human thought. 11 There lies the port; the vessel puffs her sail; There gloom the dark, broad, seas. My mariners, Souls that have toiled, and wrought, and thought with me — Come my friends, 'Tis not too late to seek a new world. Push off and sitting well in order smite That sounding furrows; 15 91 . . . for my purpose holds To suit beyond the sunset, and the baths Of all the western stars, until I die. The 1981 Indian Echo is dedicated to Mrs. Hilda Barnes. Mrs. Barnes has been the choir director at Biloxi High School for the past fifteen years. She has brought honor and recognition to Biloxi High School through her direction of the Biloxians concert choir and other choral groups. Under her skillful leadership, the Biloxi- ans have won Superior awards in the district choral com- petition for each of the last thirteen years. Much of this success is due to the feelings of unity and pride that have been instilled in the choir members by the inspiration of Mrs. Barnes. Her leadership and teaching have developed the musical and performing skills of individual choir members resulting in many of them obtaining scholar- ships for further training and providing others a lifetime of joy through music. As we embark on our further voy- age in life, we thank you Mrs. Barnes for the musical background and pride you have given us. is wn S' 1 I w STUDENT HONORS 21 Biloxi’s Homecoming Court consisted of eleven charming maids and their handsome escorts. As of this writing m Febru- ary, 1981, it was still at the number one position below: John Lennon, at far right, with fellow Beatles Paul McCartney. Rtngo Starr, and George Hamson. tn 964. the year the United States was conquered by Beatlemania. John Lennon was killed outside his apartment building in New York Gty on December 8,1980 by an apparently emotionally unstable fan. The firing of four bullets brought an end to the life of one of rock’s most brilliant musicians. At the age of forty, Lennon had spent the past sixteen years shocking, entertaining, and inspiring millions around the world. Teachers’ and students alike at Biloxi High were touched by his celebrated career and tragic murder. His brutal death is a haunting reminder of our society’s many inadequa- cies. One of John’s thousands of admirers who gathered outside the Dakota in the hours that followed his shooting scrawled across the sidewalk John Lennon Will Never Die ” Through the love of his fans, his music, and his dreams, John Lennon will live on for- ever. The group also enjoyed beignets in the French Quarter. Special projects included the selling of Advent Calendars, shown in the picture on this page. They also distributed valentines in French. The Spanish Club has had a busy year in preparation for their trip to Mexico during the spring break. The members have participated in many money-making projects to raise the funds for their trip. The pro- jects included Po-boy sales, bake sales, and a Spanish dinner in which students from other schools also participated. Other activities included a trip to U.S.M. to visit the English Lan- guage Constitution. Each class also made pinatas which added a cosmo- politan note to the festivity of Christmas. Last spring this beverage held a contest to select a Miss Pibb.” The winner had to look like a composite photograph made up of features from a number of different actresses — eyes from one, hair from another, and so forth — and had to be sponsored by an organiza- tion. The Annual Staff entered the picture of Michele shown at right — which Broome Studio kindly made without charge for us — and she was chosen as one of the top ten look-alikes nationally, receiving a cash award of $2000. Thanks to Broome Studio and Mr. Pibb, the Annual now has a celebrity on the Staff. We knew you were gorgeous, Michele, but now it s certified! ATHLETICS 131 Victory Dance for Indians For the Biloxi High Indian Football Team, 1980 was an esciting season dominated by victories over several Mississippi High School teams. A tremen- dous amount of effort and teamwork exhibited by the Indians led to an excellent record of 9 wins and 2 losses for the season. The rivalry between Biloxi and Gulfport goes back for over fifty years, and the Biloxi vs. Gulfportf game is one of the high points of every football season. This year’s game was exciting and full of suspense, the score remain- ing even throughout the game until the fourth quar- ter when Biloxi made a field goal to pull ahead of Gulfport and win the game 24-21. 134 13 MUNIrin X1 home J TAD'uwt 17 OOO v'sno A.. Good-natured teachers and coaches volunteered their services to this activity sponsored by the basketball cheer- leaders. Those who participated emerged with a few sore spots, but all who viewed the game agreed it was one of the more interesting points in spons during 1980-81. Teachers and coaches who took pan in the game were: Mr. Conde, Mr Radich, Mr. Joa- chim, Mr Goodwin, Mr White, Mrs. Pomierski, Coach Allen, Coach Sabbatini, Coach Vliet, Coach Hall, and Coach Ferrill. 151 Volleyball Team Wins District Championship This year’s Biloxi High volleyball team boasts several outstanding achievements. This prominent local citizen and dedicated booster has made time in his busy schedule to attend practically every Indian football game, both at home and away, since 1964. He occasionally has trouble getting on the field because other schools are so aston- ished to find a high school team with its own doctor! Dr. Middleton, with help from other local physicians, gives a physical examination to all students — both boys and girls, junior high and high school — who take pan in any of Biloxi’s many school sports programs. These examinations are given during the last six weeks of summer. Dr. Middleton feels the excellent sports safety record in Biloxi is due to otreful advance screening and to the excellent conditioning and training of the athletes under the guid- ance of their coaches. The new branch of Sports Medicine is one in which Dr. Middle- ton takes great interest, and he regularly attends seminars in this field. He says Women in Sports” is the topic currently receiving the most attention. A graduate of BHS himself, Dr. Middleton spent five years in the Navy, then attendedf Pre-Med at Mississippi Southern and went on to Old Miss. Medical School in Jackson. He was a member of the first four-year class graduated there in 1959. After internship and beginning practice in Shreveport, he returned to Biloxi in 1963 in association with the Trudeau-Bolton Clinic. In 1964 he began help- ing Dr. Hollis, team physician, give physical examinations to the football players. Dr Middleton’s son Bobby and his daughter Dianne graduated from BHS and his daughter Sandra is presently assistant head major- ette at Femwood Jr. High. We appreciate Dr. Middleton’s great con- tribution to sports in Biloxi and we hope to see more of his spirited war dances! 154 Biloxi Senior Is Boxing Star When you watch the boxing bouts leading up to the 1984 Olympics — anu maybe the Olym- pics too — keep an eye out for a familiar face in the ring. Biloxi senior Jerry Goff has been selected for the USA Boxing Team, and just as the Annual was going to press he reported to the USA Box- ing Training Camp in Colorado Springs, Colo- rado for two weeks training. A member of the Gulf Boxing Club, Jerry has been boxing since he was thirteen years old. with 115 bouts experience. Jerry is seventeen years old, 6 feet 2 inches tall, and will compete in the 178 pound, lightheavy weight class. 155 Baseball Team Takes Frist Place in District In the spring of 1980, the Biloxi High baseball team began train- ing under the leadership of a new coach, Henry Wieniewitz. The team got off to a slow start, losing six of the first ten games, but came on strong at the end of the season to finish with an overall record of 15-10. The Biloxi team fared even better within their dis- trict, having a district record of 11-2, and winning the title of 1980 District VIII Champions.
