This year something new was added to the Biloxi High School campus in the shape of snappy blue uniforms, as the Air Force Jun- ior Reserve Officers Training Corps made its debut. Headed by Lt. Col. Thomas Varble (Ret.), this new program offers citizenship training for the aerospace age. Members study many interesting topics, such as Pioneers of Flight, Aircraft of Today, Aerospace Environment, Space Travel, and Leadership Education. Courses help to build character and give the student the chance to be responsible for himself and others. Students also learn drill and mil- itary bearing. Cculptoi of Btg Rei Ucmmi In the BHS lobby stands a unique Indian statue which was presented to the Biloxi High School Indian Bond by its sculptor, Roy Ben Bridwell. Bridwell was presented a plaque of apprecia- tion from Band and Band Boosters by Director Earl Blessey at the ceremony dedicating the Indian on November 7, 1979. BIG RED is 10 feet tall and was carved with a chain saw out of a 400- year-old pecan tree, cut down to make room for the Harrison County 2nd Judi- cial District Courthouse in Biloxi in the mid-1960’s. The ceremony was filmed by WLOX-TV and the Annual's ubiqui- tous photographers. The Association consists of all the athletic coaches in Mississippi. Coach Allen was given the award for his outstanding work with the 1 978-79 track team. Two other coaches from Biloxi High have received the award. Coach Joe Sabbatini, BHS Athletic director, won the award in 1971. Frank Sabbatini, BHS Princi- pal, won the award in 1974. An interesting note is that Frank Sabbatini taught Coach Allen in high school. Coach Allen has been coaching for 8 years. He spent 1 Vi years at Hattiesburg and came to Biloxi in 1972. When Coach Allen was asked how he felt about the award, he said, “It is a great honor and it is a privilege to work at Biloxi High. The student body and faculty are excellent and the athletic program is the best any- where.” The 78-79 Track team backed his statement very clearly. They came in first in the Coastal Zone Big 8 Track Meet, second in the District Meet, and third in the Big 8 Meet. Congratulations Coach Allen for a job well done! 150 151 52 1979-80 CROSS COUNTRY TEAM — First Row: Paul McNeil, Kurt Wimmer, Steve Bogrod, Tony Virgilio, Keith Kantock, Panda Endns, Sharon Tompson.
