Have you ever known that the winds sometimes mourn And the sea rises high 'neath a storm blackened sky ii Did you ever float in a quaint wooden boat Thru the starry delight a mid-summer's night? Did you ever ride on mn oncoming tide W'ith an 001' dipping down with a weird rythmic sound? Have you ever yet seen a sea gull careen As it dips to the blue with the sun shining thru? Did you ever stand with a net in your hand A Quietly waiting the break that the mullet will make? Did you ever swim with fervor and vim From the shore to the bar, or the beacons afar That shine in the night with a red warning light? HaN'z'e you ever seen found an old Indian mlound W'here brave Indian Reds hid told arrowheads? Did you ever see our Dlagnolia tree With white buds agleam like the haze of a dream? I-Iave you ever heard our sublime woodlands bird? It is of these things that the big, blue Gulf sings Here they did thrill the wandering ddberville TVhen. from lands of old into this land of gold, He came to our shore which was unknown before. In September, 1912, this famous Senior class began its interesting school career at Howard No. I, with Mr. Linfield as Superintendent and Miss Hall as Principal. The members of the class were: Ura Cazeaux, the class tlapper, Elizabeth Joullian, the elass's jolliest girl, XVilhelmina Keller, Biloxi's future trained nurse, May Good man, the chatterbox, Abbie llarkness, our dear peaeemaker, Marion Hogan, our future Constance Talmadgegn Ida XVhite, one of our artists, Irish Hogan, our quarter-back, Maleolm flower, the expert lford cranker, Andy Bernieh, his mother's pride and joy, l'larl Knox, the peppiest boy of our el:1ss, and Roy Astleford, the famous critic. All were well behaved that first year, and were promoted to the the second grade. Andy began his devilment that second year and has improved in that line ever since. llelen Morrison, the most innocent of our elass, then joined us. The third year passed without any additions to the class, but lioy Astleford de- cided he needed a change for his health, and left us to go to West lrlnd. At this time one year was added to the sehool term, and to straighten matters, the fourth grade was called the fifth. At the end of the fifth year we decided we had outgrown the little tots and tra.us- fe1'red to the Central School. Our class was there increased by: Katheryn Slay, a future housewife, lsabee Stewart, a peroxide blond, Laurie VVilkes and Marguerite Hass, our cheer leaders, lillen Cannette, our comedian, Louis Clark, a Parisian mod- el, Beatrice Muenier, the heart-breaker, Hilda I,nnd,a 1 the.f ture Mary Piekford, Eunice Bilbo, a future lawyer, Myrtle Ewing, oiiixr'2iEfi'l!rice lZill'dQ Brie Price, the Sheik of VVest Beachgi' Ralph McGlanghlin, W'illiam Roof, two of the most depend- able boys in High School, Louis 'Witter and Hoy Astleford, our best talkers and ad- visors. Being in a new sehool with Mr. Koeher as Superintendent, the whole class did good wo-rk and was promoted to the seventh grade. We were there joined by Julia Bass, Mildred Izard, .lane Roof, and Edward Brady. YVe began our eighth grade with only one new member, Steve Himself. This year seemed very long as we were all anxious to get into the High School. VVe finally succeeded in getting the seventy-five per cent which entitled us to enter the coveted domain. Mr. Kocher left us this year and was succeeded by Mr. Bennett. Yve then thought ourselves grown up and very important, but the SophsH soon impressed on us that we were only green Freshies. This year the little group that had been following us so long and patiently decided they would do so no longer and skipped the eighth grade to join us. These were: Olga Swetman, our fascinating mermaid, Alma Parker, stenographer, Thelma Parker, a future teacher, Anna May Bowen, Vinnette Philbrick and Eleanor VVheeler, future chorus girls and artists models. Other members were: Elyria Latimer, the noted flirt, Lucille Meeks, so quiet and demure, Frances Randall, a wizard in bookkeeping, Maud Mugnier, every- body's friend, Lazaro Lopez, Mama's boy. By this time our class numbered forty- four. Soon after we became Freshmen, we organized our class, which was very un- usual since we were the first Freshmen to do this. Wle also formed a Literary So- iciety and divided the class into two sides, the Howard and Linfield. Many interest- ing debates were earried on between these two societies. ,A Page 34 Beacon Glow 1924 U kr -3 ' -igiii A-Z-P it i-give-, - P 'P sa T I X OHS , i . . As Sophs we didn't feel nite so green, but realized we had more responsi- bilities. At this stage of our school career Mutt and Jeif, who are better known as Harold lVolcott and Thad Bryan, entered our class. And still they came: Charles Broad QSpark Plugj our football center, and Marjorie Payne, who always plays the game. Medals were offered to the pupil in each -class who attained the highest average. Lucille Meeks received the one awarded to the Sophomores.. Then came our Junior year when the girls began to blossom into young woman-- hood, and the boys assumed the attitude of real men. The new members of this class were: Ruby Trochesset, the blushing co-edg Freda Schwartz, the noted Vamipg Fiacro Betaneourt, the Spanish cavalier, Elmer Gay, a long Yankee from Illinois, and lValker Brown, the ladies' man. Soon after becoming Juniors we called a class meet- ing and elected the following officers: Elizabeth Joullian, President, Laurie WVilkes, Vice-Presidentg Marguerite Hass, Treasurer, and Maud Mugnier, Secretary. Old rose and silver were chosen for the class colors. During this year the class gave a play entitled Prof. Pepp and with the proceeds bought books for the library. As it was the custom at the close of the session, we entertained the Seniors with a 'fFare- well Banquetn and dance. VVe ended our Junior year by acting as ushers for the graduating class of '23. ' At last we became Seniors l How proud we felt to think that we were the first and most important class of B. H. S. This year we welcomed into our class: Hazel Allen, a graduate of Temming High School, Mamie Payne, from S. C. G., Robert Taylor and Carlyce YVard. Mr. Bennet left us in our Junior year and was succeeded by Mr. .M ay. During our Senior year we had a number of socials which were very much en- j oyed. Our Athletic Director, Mr. Penglase, offered a banner to the class first at- taining one hundred percent miembership in the Athletic Association, and we won the banner. YVe proved ourselves exceptionally progressive by being the first e-lass of Biloxi High to edit an annual. The following staff was appointed: Lucille Meeks and YVilliarn Roof, Editor and Assistant Editor, respectively, and Malcolm Clower and Steve Gorenflo, Business Managers. Thirteen capable assistants were also chosen to hclp them with their work. - You have just heard the history of our class through the past and present. Truly only a dream, but a dream of our class of 'Q-14. I was standing by the River Future. Suddenly a canoe came drifting past. I rom the depths of the great sea came a melodions sound and there, to my surprise, sat Nlyrtlcxliwinglplaying a violin. Near her was her romantic lover, ErictfI'rig:. They passed on and I listened for the music. It never came again, and the beautiful waters l'llilllQl'iI to a mountain ol' rainbow colors with a glistening top. These were school pals ol' mine on their honeymoon trip. Then Venice, the land of waters! A minstrel on the silvery lakes, played music that touched the hearts and souls of men. VVhen the boat came by, I saw my class mate of by-gone days, lhlilllllolhlllgllligfi playing on her banjo, and by her side, was Iioln-rtb'I':1ylor. The minstrcl passed on. I lingered on an ovcrlianging gallery, and suddenly my imagination took me on and I drifted into the eozicst bungalow in the world. then peeped in at the window and saw, seated by the piano singing, prgtty I,ouis Clark. She ceased playing and looked into the eyes of her lmsband, Clugjlcs Broad, I could not stay longer. .lust as he brought his lips to hers, my dream vanished and I was alone. . MI wandered away and paused in front of a movie stlpdio, in Hollywood. I saw an actress, beautiful, indeed, she was my friend Katherine She came into the scene whgre a handsome Prince Charming awaited her. He was my old friend Fiacrro Betancourt, now the celebrated Rudolph. I smiled, but the vision faded. I came now upon an artist's studio. Genius-tipped were the fingers that held the brush. The artist turned, and I saw the clear-cut features of Idaflv-Qte. But she vanished, and now I entered into another dream. ilu Sitting before me was Elizabeth Joullian-L the authoress, writing a story of ro- mance among the hills of Kentucky. She looked up at me and smiled, and as I watched her further, she faded away. My lovely vision having ended. I came into a deep woods. The birds were sing- ing gaily. the gentle west wind rustled the leaves, and I skipped across the wav. I Ilt'!l1'CI,f0UIIStCl7S in the distance. I waited but the curtain went down. I wandered into a theatre where a great picture was being shown. A talented, graceful brunette portrayed l1er vampish powers. Yes, it was a great picture?-'As I looked more closely at the star, I realized that she was no other than Julia 335. The end was near and the hero came into the picture. He was Carlyce SVall, the fascinating friend of our school days. How I envied Julia! The next scene was located in Nice and Elie pianist plgyed French music? I looked towards tl1e orchestra and saw Andy lxrnich, Beatrice Sleunier and Mildiled Izard engaged as musicians. How near Monte Carlo were these former Biloxians! The scene changed. There stood the most picturesque little home. I drew aside the curtains and peeped in. There, to my surprise, was May Gbddmg busily writ- ing. I wanted to stay but alas, my dream was gone and I was standing by the R,i,ver Future. O, how beautiful sounded the rippling waves! As I gazed, suddenly, out of the depths of nowhere it seemed, there came shouts of victory. Some one was having fun. I looked around, and when I turned my face to the river, it was gone. In its place stood a grandstand. However, the roar of laughter and cheers ceased not. A suffrlagette meeting was in progresil VVho w-ere the fair suffragettes? My eyes searched the crowd and I saw Marguerite Hass and I.au1je:jjllg,:gs. I always thought they would be training directoresses and sure enough, they were getting votes for women. The noisy crowd and the grandstand became a mist on the horizon of a dream. Ilnstead of being by the River Future I was in the midst of a debutante party. Elyriagljatimg-1: wore the coronal of popularity. She was very much feted and her suitors Were numerous. She saw me among the others and came to greet me, but I could not wait. Fate seemed to draw me out of the door arid in the hallway I,saw J' . . 4' . ' our charming claisgnatesz Freda..ScdwaQz smiling at Louis Witter, and Jane Rgof talking to Edward Brady. Ham and Mgilnie, with handsome suitors, were strolling across the floor. The social whirl was claiming many it seemed. I heard a train in the distance and my fairyland of fancy beckoned me on. I went and as I heard the train, I saw that a honeymoon trip was just beginning. I lgfgsed at the blushing bride and saw that she was our witty classmate, Ellen CQ- nette. Near her stood her husband, Lawrence Romeo. The pretty bridesmaids were Frances Randall, Ura Cafbgfitix and RubyfTroclg-gsset. I found myself behind a screen 1 .J V... Ifarewelll The train left town and I went back to seek fu1'ther adventure. I landed Jn dear old Biloxii There among the teachers, I saw my beloved friends, Hazel,Alhrn and Helen bforriscm. They were so deeply interested in their work that they did not see me. I puzzled over the idea--are you Seniors of today like those . , 4 of ,213 Next, I went in lVoolworth's buildings, and my, but that elevator didisgo fast. On the very last floor, I found seated at a desk my old school friend, Alma Parker. How surprised I was to find the words Private Detective on her desk. She was very busy so I did 11ot stay longsq l urther on, I saw Vinnette Philbriek, now an attorney and counselor at law. I ean't remember how I got there but I next found myself on a well-known avenue in New York. I rang the door bell of a beautiful mansion, and a butler admitted me into a drawing room. There I saw a darling little boy and his mother. They re- sembled eaeh other and I thought and thought who it might be. Then suddenly I membered it was my old pal, Maricmxllogzm. She smiled at me as she used to, but no sooner had she smiled than my fairland of fancy called 1110 forth. 6 1 Next, I was in a newspaper ofIiee. Hard at work and sweet. as ever, was Isabee Stewart., She was workin f as bookkee mer and stenofvra iher and was she told me D 7 9 6 7 W earning fifty dollars a week. Her business manager was Steve Gorenflo of whom I caught just a glimpse before I was called forth. This time I went down to the River Future. It was sunset and twilight was near at hand. The outline of the rocks against the sky andi the many figures moving to and fro made me think of Galveston, the coast city. I looked toward a place where expert swimmers were racing for a championship. The race was soon over and the winner was lifted toitlye diving board. I at once recognized him to be my old bashful classmate, Thad Bryan. He was beaming with pride at the medal he wore. ' The skies darkened and I went to sleep on the banks of the River Future. As I dreamed, I saw 21 boys, high school, in Uvihicli John Hogiin was athlegc director. He wasuog the football field teaching Mae Clgwer, lValkgr Brown, Earl knox and Ralph McGlaughli1r how to play football. He saw me and I ran to nieethim but as my hand touched his, he was gone. I sat down by the banks of the River Future and peeped into the waters. There as I looked into the depths, I saw a dancer of grace, such as nelver was seen before. I could hardly believe my eyes for the dancer was dear little Olga Svifetrnadn. I beckoned to her, but she smiled and ran away. P Next I was walking down the streets of London. It was very crowded and so foggy that I could not recognize anyone who- passed me. A little boy wasdselling newspapers and I bought one. O-11 the headlines I read: Senator VVilliam Roof Elected by Large Majority. How great! The president of our Senior class now the President of tl1e United States. I walked down the street and thought I wg ld indulge in a show. There to my astonishment I saw my old class clown, Haro VVokott. He was the comedian and was gaining shrills of laughter from thefiaudience by his funny actions. I started to go but my attention was drawn to a noisy assembly Biyone of the downtogn apartments. In the midst were Eleanoli' Iwlieeler, Hilda Luilday and Eunice Bilbo. They were discussing the theory of tl1e evolution of mankind. I was about to join in the talk when I awoke from my visit to Dreamland. The even- ing sun was sinking in the west and the sunset turned tl1e blue waters to gold. I was resting by tl1e side of a beautiful lake. It was only a dream-a dream on a glorious evening in May. Starting off by defeating Ver- 'AA-gd rina High of New Orleans we continued our success de- feating Gulfport High, our Sweetest Rivals, 38-0. 11'e lost to Laurel High 2+-0. VVe defeated Gulfport again 39-0. Then lost to Hattiesburg by the score of 12-6. Poplarville the invincible, unconquered and otherwise reputable football warriors, led by their coach Goat', Hale, was the next victim of Biloxi Higlfs Yellow Jackets, losing by a score of 12-0. This was a big day for Biloxi as Poplarville had not been defeated for a season and a half. 4 Page 72 L 1 Q A . f i Ljyvpc Q Q1 Lkfk., Nffg- fc. Then on Turkey Day, the Yellow Jackets played their last game for Biloxi. Our opponent, Barton High School of Mobile, Alabama, were the champions of Alabama for that season. This was the best game of the year. Bar- ton kicked oil' to us. After an exchange of punts we advanced the ball to drop kick- ing distance and Eikle, our left-half, sent a perfect one from the twenty-five yard line. Barton matched our drop kick with a place kick in the first part of the second quarter. lVe scored a touchdown in the third quarter but failed to kick goal. T Then a very unusual thing happened, Captain VVill Kennedy intercepted a pass in the middle of the field in the closing seconds of play, resulting in a 50-yard 1'un and touchdown. This was Captain Kennedy's last year and his last game and was a fitting climax to the season of 1922. Thus Biloxi High defeated the champions of Alabama by a score of 15-3. Tujaque, our star quarter-back, was a unanimous selection for the All-State High School team. Bernich, our left tackle, also earned a place on the mythical eleven. There were several who received honorable mentioning, these being Kennedy, Dowling, and Collins. In December the Biloxi business men tendered the football team and Coach X Penglase a banquet at the Biloxi Hotel. Each member of the team received a gold football with his name and position engraved upon it, under which was Miss. Coast Champions 1922 The team in turn gave Coach Penglase a gold football in ap- f n preciation for the untiring efforts that he showed in de- veloping the best and most successful team Biloxi has ever rx F had. Even then our schedule called forth the best teams of J Q Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana. ' 5 Our season was marred by disagreeable and rainy weather and due to the fact that our team was light Qaverage 1-MU, we were greatly handicapped. Biloxi High 5,66 1 gl has always gone down Hghting which proved to be the ease this year. Olne thing we Q lid that last year's team failed to do was to hold Laurel's same 1922 team to a lone ouehdown. Another instance of our fighting spirit was brought out in the Hatties-- Q burg game when we scored by bringing the ball the length of the field in the last quar- ter with the score of 42-6 against us, Mattina carrying the ball over. This was only the si. li? second time up to date that Hattiesburg was scored on that season. 'We did not have much sueeess when one considers the results, but with the disadvantages our team had to buck against, we should be satisfied. Captain-elect, John Banks, one of the most dependable as well as proficient players on the team, has been elected to lead the Biloxi Yellow Jackets of '2-11. . f J-Lg' SCHEDULE 1923 l if Il i ', f 3 3 Biloxi 19 .... .... Not only did she put out a good team this year, but she has'also aroused interest in her physical education classes. She has taught them pretty drills and dances, taken them on hikes, and has planned and carried out many other interesting affairs for them. In return for these many kindnesses she has won the love and respect of all who know her. Miss Dacey is interested in all school activities, and one of the biggest things she has done is to put on a Stunt Night for the benefit of the annual. This is the first affair of this kind ever had in Biloxi High and you may be sure it was a huge success. Every one will remember it as one of the most enjoyable entertainments of the year, and we all hope Miss Dacey will continue her success throughout the coming years. Once upon an evening dreary, when my lessons made me weary, And the thoughts of love and romance held me tight. In a chair of spring and willow, with my head upon a pillow I indulged in love and romrance half the night. 'Tis a shame indeed, I muttered 'Tis a shame and is not right. But the morrow brought me sadness, when it would have me gladness If I'd studied every lesson as before. Every teacher gave me zero, while I dreamed on ofniy hero, And my mother hearid about it as before. Now my books theygiiy beside me And there's nothiingto betide me So I study evermore. - -LOUISE SWETMAN. f ,I X J jrfe J r ya X 'fl' 6' vo ' ' ' 'l X , 4 f -ffl ' Page 83 , f J I ,QE Sf v-1 V .J M . .5 'iiimcon fiiiuw 1924 , ,ff- ' - if ..
