FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS I wasn't disappointed when I arrived in Billings because 1 found it to be a very pretty town. It is different from Cairo since it is smaller, but I don't mind. I enjoyed the snow and skiing, although it was very cold. 1 also enjoyed the food and MTV. Everybody was very friendly and nice, and that is probably what I will miss the most, the hospitality of the people. School was very exciting, and 1 liked the activities, which we don't have back in Egypt, and all my teachers were very helpful. The mountains are beautiful, and the landscape is different from that in my country. My family only consists of four; my parents, a 13-year-old brother, and myself. In Egypt I attend an English school, which is one of the most famous in Cairo. In the states I live with the KeTker family, and it is a big change since there are seven of us, but I enjoy and regard them as my own family. I am in gratitude to everyone 1 have met and who made me feel at home and will always miss them a lot. Whatever I am doing, a part of me will forever belong back in Billings, my home town in the United States. -Mohamed Khalifa AFS l UPPER RIGHT, CLOCKWISE: Our hearty, transplanted v Montanans pose for a shot in the cold: Tomoaki Abe, Jari Melart, and Mohamad Khalifa. The first one is reading and hearing. I took it before last year. That was very hard for me. And the second one is a personal interview in Tokyo. That was so fun. We stayed there for four days and during that time we had volleyball games and a talent show. The third one is a papers inspection. I got a paper about my host family in last April. I was so excited when I learned I could go to the U.S. We had an orientation in May and talked about life in another country. And we left for the U.S. on July 23. It took one year from the time I took the first test until I was actually here. When we arrived in the U.S., we stayed at Stanford University in San Francisco. At that time, there were many Japanese around me. Then, after four days, I came to Billings, Montana. That was a very hot day. Everything was different from Japan. There is no Japanese, no Japanese language, no Japanese food. But I didn't miss Japan because there are lots of new things: MTV, homecoming, Twirp, Pepsi, JC Penney, Northwestern Bank, etc. I spent my summer vacation and we went to Salt Lake City by car. It took 12 hours. I felt U.S. August 29, school started, but it was hard for me to learn anything, especially American literature and American government. Teachers speak just English. I went to see my first football game. And after the game we had a dance. My Japanese school doesn't have any dances, so I was very happy. And American students have two holidays in a week; we have just one. I like American teachers because they are very friendly. My Japanese teachers always say to us Study! Learn! I am missing fishes. -Tomoaki Abe AFS When I arrived here in Billings it was a small shock because the landscape looked so different compared to Finland's terrain, but when I saw your great mountains, I felt happy that I was here. I really like to ski, so it was a big relief to notice that I would be able to ski here. American lifestyle is quite different that I am used to in Fin- land. People are really outgoing and friendly here. Your TV and radio are both better than ours in Finland, I think. And the food! I am sure that is one thing I am going to miss when I go back to Finland. It is really good. The transportation is sometimes a problem here because I don't have a driver's license yet. I hope things will get easier when I get my license. My family back in Finland consists of father, mother, and two twenty-year-old brothers. Both brothers of mine are now in the army, and I have to go there too after my graduation. So far everything has gone really well, and I have enjoyed my stay here. I like my host family, which doesn't include any children, but my host parents are pretty young, so I can do lots of things with them. 1 am glad that I can stay here at West High because the girls are pretty, and the teachers are nice. -Jari Melart AFS 117 BEARS GO ABROAD UPPER LEFT, CLOCKWISE: Jocelyn, what are you doing inside that pencil? Jocelyn's host mother (Lillian) and two brothers (Karsten and Pcder). Michelle Agosto's host family outside the Grand Place in Brussels (Frans, France, and Jean). My summer in Sonderborg, Denmark, was pretty much a rockin' time. I didn t have a typical AFS experience, since my host family was somewhat unusual. I lived with a sing e 32-year-old woman and her three sons, aged 5, 5, and 6. Denmark proved to be a beautifu country with exceedingly friendly people. During my stay, 5 went to the beach, saw t e queen, visited the discos, spent a weekend at a motorcycle gang convention, and went to Legoland. In reflection, I would have to say that this past summer was the highlight of my life. I would definitely recommend international travel to anybody with the money, the guts to master a language barrier, and the desire to learn. Vi ses i Sonderborg. Mojn, Jocelyn Pihlaja I spent a fantastic summer in Feleurus, Belgium, a small village about 35 km south of Brussels. My host family was great; I had a mom (Jean), a dad (Frans), and an eighteen-year- old sister (France). I not only became a member of their fam- ily, but I was spoiled rotten! Although Belgium is a tiny country, it has a lot to offer. Its history is rich, and I explored many ancient cathedrals, castles, and monestaries. It is also a country with lot of natural beauty. I enjoyed hiking, biking, swimming, and waterskiing. My sister and I spent almost every minute of every day together. We visited her friends, shopped, and went to parties. One of my favorite experiences was when we went to a 13-hour rock concert with 66,000 other people! I was also lucky to travel to a number of other countries. I visited France, Spain, Germany, and Luxembourg. It amazed me that I could cross three countries quicker than I can cross Montana! My summer in Belgium was very special, even better than I had expected. I made a lot of friends and gained a whole new family. I learned so much! I visited new countries and saw different cultures, and I learned a new language. Most of all, I learned about people. I've discovered that although people may seem different because they live thousands of miles apart, eat different foods, speak different languages, and wear differ- ent clothes, they are much the same inside. Michelle Agosto 118 PORTUGAL, DENMARK, BELGIUM, SPAIN My summer in Portugal was an experience of a lifetime. My family was wonderful and made every day enjoyable and interesting. I had two sisters, Marie Joao and Ana Carla, and became very close to them. We lived in Vale de Cambra, a town of about 6,000 people. I enjoyed traveling around Portugal, visiting their cities, castles, and, of course, their many beaches. I also had a good time learning the Portuguese language and customs. Portuguese people are extremely friendly; they like to eat, drink green wine, stay up late, and laugh. Although : hope to return someday soon, I found the most difficult part of my summer was leaving Vale de Cambra. I doubt that there ever would have been a chance for me to cxperienc Hie in a country such as Portugal had it not been for AF5. I am deeply grateful for i' • opportunity 1 had to make new friends and to gain an extra family and countrv. Ate man ha. My summer in Beire (navarra) Spain is something I will remem- ber for the rest of my life. My family was very kind, understanding, and made sure I was happy all the time. Beire is a small town of about 400 people, which to me is an advantage because I was able to meet everyone. They accepted me right away and treated me as though I always had lived there. I had six brothers and sisters and a lot of relatives so I was never lonely, and they did their best to teach me Castellano and their culture. I learned to accept new and different customs as well as growing to love my new family and making new friends. The hardest part of my trip was saying good-bye to the people and country. I will never forget them or my AFS experience. Karen Davies DOING A GREAT JOB-LATIN CLUB LATIN CLUB. ROW ONE: Jennifer Streeter, Marvin Cunningham, Nicky Maurantonio, Kirsten Crippen, Jamie Hogue. The win over Hellgate, however, was forfeited because of an ineligible player. After losing a close game to Great Falls High, the Bears lost again to powerhouse CMR. After dropping an- other close one to Butte and then to Helena Capital, the Bears rebounded with a victory over Helena High and a 40-0 shutout over Bozeman. In that game, quarterback John Zuklic, the leading passer in the state, set a school record with twelve passing TD's. West's young girls team did not place high in the standings, but Kathie Jahr tied for sixth with a 375 total. Senior John McCalla and Freshman Mike McClintock battled to a third in boys dou- bles. West girls, first place winners at the Billings Invi- tational, Great Falls Invita- tional, and Eastern Division- al, slipped to a third-place bronze after three straight team titles in 1982-84. Senior Heather Ridle led the team with a third in girls singles, with Senior Leigh Hebert and frosh Melinda Wilson adding a third in girls doubles. Boze- man finished first and Mis- soula Hellgate second in the girls team race. Tony and Heather were nominated at the end of the season for the Prince All-American team.
