TEACHERS’ FAVORITE QUOTES (Learning) is the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honor trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then — to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Quote from The Once And Future King from Mrs. Foley Life i:. - . 'ou; we peel it off one layer at a time, . . s we cry. Mrs. Waite Those '.emember the past are con- demned :o rep.It. Mr. Young It’s crackers to slip a rozen and snide. Mr. Welchlin Fire in your eyes! Miss Spaulding Faith is the substance of things hoped for — the evidence of things not seen. Mr. Smith God made the angels to show him splendor — as he made animals for innocence and plants for their simplicity. But man he made to serve Him wittily, in the tangle of his mind. Mr. Shikany Nobody cared enough to write a book about it. Mrs. Roland I didn’t hear you! Mr. Reed If you don’t have a dream, how you gonna have a dream come true? Mr. Porter Never negotiate out of fear . . . but . . . never fear to negotiate. Mr. Paterson There is always a method in my madness. Mr. Morris Judge not lest ye be judged. Mr. Denning No person is too big to be courteous, but many are too small. Mr. Wohler I never met a meal I didn’t like. Mr. Dundas To fail is not to have tried. ALEJANDRO WOODMAN I was born August 14, 1 965, in Piura, Peru, and I still live in small town where are 300,000 people. The first business there is farm and ranch. This town is 5° (geographic) from the Equator and be- cause of that, I can say I have summer all year. The coldest temperature is 55° F and in the summer, is 100° F or more (36°C). My family has ten members: parents (Dad Mom), four sisters, and four brothers (including me). The way of the life in Peru is so different. I have to be 18 years old to drive, and also that is our drinking age. Another different thing I have is many very good friends there. I thank the kids here, but I think here I have made many more good friends. Very good for only six months. The school there starts into the first week of April and finishes in December before Christmas, and then is when the summer begins; I used to go to the beach where I played soccer, volleyball, cannoe, sailing at the afternoon time. That is one place I won’t forget ever because that is a very special place which is called Colan, and the other place I will not forget is called Billings; this is another so special place. Alejandro calls this the “Frontera . viox:! - na en Yellow stone Park.” In Peru I play soccer, basketball, racquetball and run. I knew about AFS in June, 19 82, and after one year I knew I would come to Billings, MT. I thought I would go to some very cold state, but now I know the people here can change the temperature with their hearts. When I came here I never was nervous; I think this sounds unusual, but that is the truth. The only thing I don't know is how am I going to feel when I have to leave Billings and go back to Peru where I will not have place to go skiing. That is the new sport I have learned, and I like it. About West High I can say: it is a different school and probably has the same kind of life than the rest of the schools of U.S.A. but anyways, this was the first school I have attended in the U.S.A. and I think that is why I won’t forget this school and the teachers either. Alejandro and his American family. MIGUEL AGUIRRE The year is almost gone and now is time for the reflec- tions. I come from a city, Bilbac, Spain, that has one million and a half inhabitants so when I knew that I was com- ing to a city of the size of Billings I didn’t know what was going to happen. Now I can say that I’ve really enjoyed this time and that I am thankful to all those people who have spent some time with me. I’ve lifted from a simple smile in the corridor to my time with cross country or the night that I was King. 1’ am going to remember for a long time the black and jrAd., tIn shy in Montana, and all these things that make Billings look so great as it does. Thanks for your time and perhaps someday we will be able to see each other again. Miguel Miguel's Spanish family. Miguel and American family at Yellowstone Park. Miguel poses surrounded by snow covered hills at Yel lowstone. Park. AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE INNOCENTS ABROAD: I spent my summer in Wagga Wagga Austra- lia. Wagga Wagga is a small town of 40,000. It is mainly an agricultural town with sheep be- ing the main product. My father, Phil, was an exonomic teacher. My mother, Ilza, moved from Germany when she was a teenager. I also had a little brother, Jimmy. While I was in Australia, I learned a lot about the Aussie country. I also learned a great deal about America and how foreigners perceive it. Aus- tralia is a very sportsminded country, and I was fortunate to- participate in many Aussie sports such as: Australian Rules football, rugby and cricket. During my three months in Australia, I learned a great deal. I am great- ful of my experience and feel that my love for America has increased because of it. Jeff Mackay Oi! My summer in Espirito Santo do Pinhal, Brazil, was one I will never forget. My family was great, and it consisted of two sisters (Ara- lucia and Aratlena) and one brother (Adatto). They were all around my age, so we got along perfectly! I had about 25 cousins, aunts and uncles that all lived in my city of 40,000 peo- ple , so I learned Portugese well. I also learned how to accept the customs of another country. They love to eat, sleep a lot, and party late! Those were only a part of the real meaning of going on AFS, though. It made me realize the importance of friendship and taught me to express myself as an individual representing the U.S. The memories of Brazil will stay in my mind as fond reminders of a wonderful summer! Chow! Ann Wilkinson The time I spent in Aachen last summer was the best two months I have ever experienced. Aachen, a city of 250,000 inhabitants which sits on the borders of Belgium, the Nether- lands, and West Germany, was Charlemagne’s favorite city and is the place of his burial. Aachen's Kaiser Dome houses Charlemagne's throne and treasures, and it is one of the more popular cathedrals of the German people. During my stay in Germany, I learned more about Germany’s culture, values, and people than a tourist ever could. Struggling with a foreign language and culture without the presence of my American family and friends taught me that I can make it on my own when I need to. I wish everyone could have an exper- ience like that of my AFS summer in Aachen. Penni and her German family. Penni Kolpin WEST-ERNERS IN FARAWAY PLACES Robert’s family in Buscoldo, Italy. I’m happy to sa • that AFS has given me one of the most valuable eoiperit es in my life. I spent a year learning how to live in another culture. It was a year full of challenges, changes and most of all good times. Living in another country taught me a lot about myself as well as other people. Chile is a small country but it has some of the friendliest people I've ever met. I think the har- dest part of the entire year was leaving everybody I had grown so close to during the year. A part of my stayed behind with all those people who mean so very much to me. I spent the best year of my life in that skinny little country I had scarcely heard of before last year. I dream of going back there someday. You know, doing some- thing like this makes one realize how many people there are in the world to get to know. How many potential friends one has. My AFS expereince has given me a new meaning to the word friendship. Ciao! I spent my AFS summer on a small farm in a little village called Buscoldo in Northern Italy. My family's name is Lodi Rizzini. My father spent most of the time teaching me the ways of farming in Italy. My brother (1 5 years) and my sister (1 7 years) spent their time teaching me Italian and introducing me to the 3,000 inhabitants of Bus- coldo. I learned enough Italian to communicate wherever I went. I toured all Northern Italy and even toured all of Switzerland with my cousin Franco Bigi. I had a very hard time getting along with my family because they were always too busy to be with me. So I moved about four blocks away to live with my cousin and his wife. Franco and Man- vela Bigi. Life in Italy is basically laid back and slow. They are very warm peopleand love to talk to anyone about everything. Even though I had prob- lems with my family, I had the best time of my life. I had never dreamed about going to another coun- try and learning so much about their people, their culture, and their customs. This experience will stay with me forever and someday very soon I am going to go back. I am very thankful to the AFS chapter in West High for my experience. IT WON’T MEAN A THING TO ME IF I GO THERE ALONE. THEY PROMISED US WE’D HAVE A CHANCE; THAT’S ALL WE’RE HOPING FOR. IF WE MAKE ALL THE RIGHT MOVES, WE CAN SHOW THEM HOW THERE’S NO WAY WE CAN LOSE — IF WE MAKE ALL THE RIGHT MOVES. I LOOK BEYOND THESE SMALL TOWN STREETS AND SEE THE WORLD OUT THERE. ANYONE CAN FIND THEIR ROAD, IF THEY ONLY DARE. THERE’S MORE FOR US THAN GIVING IN AND ONLY GETTING BY. THEY SAY WE'RE GOING TO SINK OR SWIM, BUT WE INTEND TO FLY! IF WE MAKE ALL THE RIGHT MOVES WE CAN SHOW THEM HOW. THERE’S NO WAY WE CAN LOSE, IF WE MAKE ALL THE RIGHT MOVES.
