When they played I’d sing along; it made me smile. Those were such happy times, and not so long ago how I wondered where they d gone. But they’re back again, just like a long lost friend — all the songs I loved so well. When they get to the part where he’s breaking her heart, it can really make me cry — just like before. It’s yesterday once more. Lookin’ back on how it was in years gone by and the good times that I had makes today seem rather sad. So much has changed. It was songs of love that I would sing to them, and I’d memorize each word. Those old melodies still sound so good to me as they melt the years away. All my best memories come back clearly to me. Some can even make me cry, just like before. It’s yesterday once more. The Carpenters UPPER LEFT, CLOCKWISE: Mike Conrad and Kim Faerber enjoying a football game. Not only did I meet a lot of wonderful people, but I also had the opportunity to learn about the life and culture of the U.S. as a real Ameri- can and not as a tourist. Belgium is a very small country, so coming here was as enormous change, but it was easy to adapt myself because I was sur- rounded by loving people. I want to thank all my friends ana especially the Eames family for making this year so special to me. — Ilse FOREIGN AFS. STANDING: Aki Kupiainen, Flavio Albornoz. SITTING: Ilse Fimmers i 134 EXCHANGE STUDENTS After I got over the first problems of the language barrier and getting ac- quainted, I began to make observations about what was going on around me. Being an outsider and hav- ing something to compare my observations to, I learned American-style quickly. I learned that American food is actually Mexican or Italian or Eng- lish or Scandinavian food (with the exception of tur- key), but I suppose that is what the U.S. is: many dif- ferent nationalities mixed AKIKUPIAINEN FINLAND m a big, big pan. I learned that school is more than only a studying place; it is also a centre where most also a centre where most activities have concentrat- ed, and that school lunch is the same as in Finland — inedible. But I also learned that there are things in the U.S. that are different, too. For example, money seems to be the most im- portant thing in Ameri- cans' lives; friends are chosen by wealth, a per- son's reputation depends on wealth, and everything is measured by wealth. However, as I see it, the youth may be changing — this attitude seems to be strong among adults, but weakening among young- sters. FLAVIO ALBORNOZ CHILE — Aki Chile is a small country in population, but big in size. It is located in the bottom of South America. The standard of living is really the same as in Montana, with the same cars, and machines in general. I can say Montana rminds me of my country in many aspects. For instance, the way people live, the friendliness of the people, the nice places we have in the mountains for fishing and hunting, and the principle economic resources — mining copper and agriculture. Also I would not be honest if I didn't say I miss my country, but also I have to say Montana is my second home. Ever and forever I am going to be thankful to Montana and the people living here, and always a piece of my heart is going to be here. — Flavio 135 ASSORTED GOODIES THIS PAGE. Unfortunately, this impressive record fell just short of getting them into post-season play. Although the team did not compete for a championship, it did set five new records over the course of the season. Running back Rob Meidinger set two new individual rushing records while the team set new records for average yards per game, 299 (the old record 265), most yards offensively in one game 398 (the old record was 396), and finally Chris Dreiling booted a 69 yard punt, believed to be the longest ever for the Bears. The highlight of the season came when West outlasted cross town rivals Senior High with a 30-23 victory, keeping the Bears the best in Billings for another year. West won on a complete effort by both the offense and defense. With eight minutes left and West trailing 23- 22, the Bears recovered a fumble on the Bronc’s 47-yard line. With- in five plays the Bears scored and managed to hang on for the win. This victory put the Bears one up on the overall record between the two teams with 11 wins for the Bears, 10 for the Broncs and one tie. ROW TWO: Jim Gappa, Mike Moore, Adam Kim- met, John Chamberlain, Dan Ken- nedy. This year's West boys’ swim team was hampered by a poor turnout. Eight boys came out at the begin- ning of the season and only five finished it. But those who endured the long, hard months of practice did represent West High well at the state meet, placing a respect- able seventh out of fifteen. Fine talent was spread out among the team, with Senior and Jeff Giese, who placed fifth in the backstroke and sixth in the butterfly, leading the way. Jim Gappa was third in the freestyle and fourth in the in- dividual medley. UPPER RIGHT, CLOCKWISE: “How much farther do I have to go? “Last one in is a rotten egg! “Now all the way back?! They ended the season with a rather disappointing 7-13 record. The Bears tended to get too far down in the first half of a game, leaving the gap too wide to close during the second half when the team usually played better basketball. The clock ran out on the Bears during the Divisional tournament as they fell victim for a third time to a number-one-ranked Bronc team and was eliminated from the tournament by losing a heartbreaker to CMR. Kerry Wahl, Eric Bjorgum, Leif Welhaven, and Jason Wolff all had an exceptional season, turning in some fine individual performances. The team roster was made up of mostly underclassmen show- ing only four seniors: Craig VanLuchene, Chris Dreiling, Eric Bjorgum, and Kerry Wahl. With almost the entire varsity team returning the Bears are looking for a better season next year. MORE JV VARSITY ACTION CLOCKWISE. HHGINNING U 'I'HH IUCIIT: The team shot. BOYS TO 4TH AT STATE The West Boy’s gymnastics team had a surprisingly good season with three seniors, four juniors, and four sophomores. The young team coached by Steve Handley and Tom Teagarden just kept getting better with experience as the season progressed. The astounding team perfected their performances to unexpectedly win the Divisional meet, but finished a disappointing fourth at State. The State meet, however, was very close as 2nd, 3rd, and 4th places were separated by only 1.5 points. Individual gymnasts Byron LaRue, Bill Royer, and Steve Henneford all did quite well, bringing in twelve top-ten finishes. 216 GOLDEN GIRLS SETTLE Injuries before state took their toll as it cost the Golden Girl gym- nasts the state title. Although one of the top performers, Bonnie Par- man, was out of action, they did the best they could with what hey had to secure second place. You wake me up and time has slipped away. And suddenly, it's hard to find the memories you left behind. Remember? Do you remember the laughter and the tears, the shadows of misty yesterday? The good times and the bad you’ve seen and all the others in be- tween. Remember? Do you remember the times of you life? Reach back for the joy and the sorrow, put them away in your mind, for memories are time that you borrow to spend when you get to tomorrow. Here comes the setting sun, the seasons are pass- ing one by one, so gather moments while you may. Collect the dreams you dream today. Remember? Will you remember the times of your life?
