S 9 i have a photograph: preserve your memories; they’re all that’s left you. — paul simon _ Y £ 'fcB 2- Ore? at e 16 17 (VCUM! 19 High school is an agglomeration of things from life. Sure, it is desks, books, and homework — and sometimes, when the buzzer rings and students file out mechanically, it seems like prison. High school is time-consuming; in fact, about 29% of one’s time. But school is also a collection of people. Not just a special breed either. It’s got football captains right along side of debaters; it’s got a lot of hair on one head and not so much on another; it’s got school-spirited yellers and some who aren't. It’s got students who like to sing and some who like to march. There are bitter feelings between some kids, for one reason or another. Justification is not needed — but a certain degree of maturity is. School has sneers, smiles, dedication and apathy. It has tedious work; and, now and then, some pretty good moments. It has honesty and frankness, cheating and conceit. High school is a society in which people can learn to accept hypocrisy, responsibility, and the opinions of others; to do the best with an unwanted situation. High school is an epitome of most everything to be encountered. It lasts from August until June. And if one is lucky, one goes there for three years. It adds up to a big part of one’s teenage years and an even bigger part of one’s maturing. To preserve its memories is to preserve a vital period in a life. For high school is an engraving of life’s offerings on mind and soul. 20 ■over troubled 1 i i c i p the spirit parade A homecoming parade — though it may seem trivial, or routine, or blasb,— owns a place in the pages of a year- book. In 1971, October hosted the affair; that sunny au- tumn afternoon, downtown Billings echoed with the ex- citement of the colorful floats and the spirited cheers.4 Later, the Bears triumphed over Great Falls Central. The day concluded with the crowning of King Butch Petty and Queen Jo Selvig (opposite, lower left). 24 25 billings west excels: pillow talk! Once again Director Mr. Richard Lee, Technical Director Mr. Lowell Bush- nell, and their crew of dramatists at- tempted and succeeded to produce the 1971 fall production. Pillow Talk was seen in West High’s auditorium on the 19th and 20th of November. Many students, on and off the stage, participated in making Pillow Talk a success. With the help of Corby Skin- ner, student director, Karen Berger, Stage Manager, and the students in stage crew and props, and costumes and makeup, Pillow Talk will go down in West High’s history of golden greats. Stagecraft made the sets for Pillow Talk, the vari- ety show, Key to the World, and Pyg- malion. The class also did all of the lighting for the chorus, band, and or- chestra concerts, and for the various groups that rented the stage. Instruc- tor is Mr. Lowell Bushnell. STAGECRAFT. Sponsored by Mrs. Betty Nesbit, and assisted by Mr. Charles Nesbit, they worked hard during the summer months to prepare for football halftimes. Then, with the start of school, they performed at nearly all home Bear games, and, in addition, at the M.S.U. game. They also marched in the W-Day parade. Later they performed at home basketball games, divisional tournament, and state tournament. When these girls were not practicing for halftime performances, they were busy raising money for new uniforms, for “miscellaneous expenses,” and for “that one special trip — in this case, to Spokane, Washington, in May, for the Lilac Festival. Not all out-of-class efforts were directed to making money, however. During the holiday season these girls donated baskets of food to the needy, held their annual Christmas breakfast, and prepared “Christmas goodies for the teachers. In the spring they not only modeled for the local Bridal Boutique but also put on a style show of their own, “Spring Into Fashion. In other words, always busy, loyal to Bear Spirit, proud, they were, once again, a tremendous plus for Billings West High. It shows that the keys of talent, beauty, wisdom, money, and travel are not the keys that open the world. Pat Scott, a scrubwoman in mime, tries to become a part of the world. She tries to conform with the people of each era to become a part of the world. She fails and is ignored and rejected. Finally, in the 1970’s, Pat is presented with the key of love, the key that opens the door to the world. The generation of the ’70's has found the key . and the only way to keep it is by passing it on. FAR LEFT: With rose in hand, Stevie Pust sings a melody of love. Extra-curricular activities include: a color guard, drill team, rifle team, visits to service installations such as Malmstrom AFB, camping and hiking trips, visits to Naval installations such as Navy boot” camp in San Diego, flights in Naval air- craft, cruises on Naval vessels, the unit’s own indoctrination boot camp on the Boulder River, and special social activities such as the yearly Naval Cadet Ball. Trying to diminish the student body’s apathy, the Council proposed voter registration, a two-party system, a method to impeach the irresponsible representatives, and held a work- shop to guide the Student Council representatives. Unity was stressed through a W-Day parade and a fair pep assem- bly schedule recognizing many different school organiza- tions. A cooperative relationship in Intra-City Student Coun- cil led to the Billings high schools participating in Exchange Day programs, a joint talent assembly, and the Billings Youth Week. A respectable relationship tied West High to many community groups through the Christmas Food Drive, and the new innovations that Student Council accomplished were the establishment of a strong budget, a Cub cheerlead- er program, an activity sign fund, and a new trophy case. In October West hosted the Eastern District FTA Convention, which attracted students from three neigh- boring cities as well as local chapters. Members also partici- pated in a debate on ungraded classroom teaching at East- ern Montana College. In addition, plans for classroom ob- serving were also completed. Through DECA, the Distributive Educational Clubs of America, members learned more about the business world. They also ran the school supply store at West. Future Homemakers of America kept quite busy this year with many money-making projects. They sponsored a paper drive in the fall. At Christmas they sponsored a gift-wrapping at K-Mart. Also, bake sales were held at school for Hallow- een and Valentine's Day. The money received from these projects was used mainly to send delegates to two FHA Conventions. ABOVE, RIGHT. Under the leadership of President Layne Tippets, Vice-President Brent Hergenraeder, Sec- retary-Treasurer Mitch Durand, and Sergeant-at-Arms Bryon Hustad, the club raised money to purchase blazers for the athletic teams. The highlight of the year was when the club succeeded in renewing the faculty basketball game series. Girls' Varsity Club, the female version of Letterman's Club, achieved its main goal for the 71-72 school year: the promotion of girls' athletics. These spiffy-looking jock- ettes slaved many nights, making carmel apples, selling concessions, and pushing balloons. They also sold West High T-shirts in the fall. All profits from the various proj- ects went toward the purchase of competition tops for the Girls’ Cross Country team, additional blazers, and the scholarship fund. At the state cross country meet held in Great Falls Octo- ber 23, West finally climbed to the top. The victory was the first for the West cross country team in the history of the state meet. Doherty alone, of course, did not insure the vic- tory.
