Along with the long hours spent practicing for their precision halftimes, these girls spent much of their extra time planning and completing various projects. These projects included a candy sale, bakesales, concessions, dances, a spring style show, preparing treats for the teachers, and selling promoters of school spirit. Posters and banners made by the majorettes decorated the halls before every sports event. Sponsor Mrs. Betty Nesbit, the leaders, the managers, and the rest of the corps worked together to make the 1968-69 school year a successful and rewarding one. As in the past years, the Westward staff has, surmounting, extreme difficulties, produced an annual. We are sure that as of now, the reader has noticed that there is a cover and contents. Carrying on the tradition of past WEST- WARD staffs, the hallowed room of 123 during fifth period vibrated with the sound of laughing voices, regular gossip, and the demanding voice of Mr. Roger Megerth, the adviser, heard above the roaring din. Some new and inexperienced teachers have prob- ably thought this room during fifth period to be a corrective class for retarded chil- dren, while in reality the staff has been anxiously discussing the merits of the past year's book. The WESTWARD staff is sure that the reader has recognized the new ideas of this book. A new cover, new layout, an extended iden- tification of pictures, and a new organiza- tion of sections, are just a few of the changes. Realistically, the '68-69' Westward is a $9,000 a year business, not child's play, and the people of this organization try to put their all into it. Industrial Site 1968 Bear Gridiron The loss of most of the previous season's Golden Bear starters—including super-star quarterback Gary Fox and end Ken Hustad—forced Head Coach Walt Laird into a difficult building season for 1968. Only eight lettermen returned, and to complicate matters, a multitude of injuries plagued the Bears all season. After disappointing losses in their first two games, the Bears suddenly seemed to pull themselves together and reeled off three consecutive victories, upsetting Kalispell, out-figthing Helena, and trouncing Great Falls Central. But as more injuries set in, the rest of the season was one long disappointment with the Bears unable to come up with the backfield speed needed for a balanced attack. Bright spots in the Bear's lineup were quarterback Greg Todd, who claimed the Big-Ten passing yardage title; Bernie Quilico, an offensive and defensive pass-grabbing threat; Dean Sankovitch, rugged defensive guard, Mick Kratovil, defensive end, and diminutive Kevin Bochy, an effective scatback. Sankovich won a Lee Newspaper All-State first team berth, while Quilico and Kratovil garnered second team posi- tions. Both Quilico and Bochy were named to the Billings Gazette All-City team. 122 Bears Struggle to 3-7 Record THE BEARS.
