The play was directed by Mrs. Trudi Downer and student director Betty Jean Morrison. The story takes place in the bachelor apartment of Alan Baker (Gordon Quick), a 33 year old playboy. Life for Alan is disrupted when Buddy (Steve Holmes), his younger brother, moves in with him. Mrs. Baker (Lisa Lombardy) is upset by this arrange- ment. Mr. Baker (Don Phillips) fears that Buddy will follow in the footsteps of Alan. Connie Dayton (Katie Schwidde) and Peggy Evans (Denise Pollack), friends of the bachelors, are also involved in this comedy. 14 Above. Buddy listens to his mother's advice. To the right. Mr. Baker has a fatherly chat with Buddy. The Young and Old Invade the Halls of Billings Senior Parents who were able to get to their child's room on time listen as the teacher explain his class and what will be done during the current school year. On the first day of school, the bewildered sophomores are directed to their rooms by the pros---Senior Counselors. Ugh! School!” replies one student to his friend. My last year. It seemed like it would never get here, ” sighs a Senior. These were just a few of the things that were heard in the halls of Senior when it opened its doors to students, new and returning, on August 31, 1970. The sophomores and new students reported at 8:30 in the morning and the re- turning juniors and seniors reported back at 1:00 that afternoon. The halls of Billings Senior were invaded again on October 29, 1970, by the parents of our students, many of whom were former BSH students themselves. The parents attended an assembly in the auditorium at 7:00, then went from the various classrooms from 7:30 till 9:00. At 9:00, parents went to the cafeteria for refresh- ments. 17 Those Were the Days The Z-Club presented its annual A.F.S. Follies, November 17-18, in Senior High's auditorium. The theme for this year’s Follies was Those Were The Days. The money raised went to the Ameri- can Field Service Program. The Oldies Act covering the 1920's opened the pro- gram with a Can-Can Dance routine performed by the Junior Majorettes. Following the Oldies Act was the Middle Act, covering the 1930’s and 1940’s, which included a skit on foreign cooking by the A. F.S. students. The last act was the Modern Era covering the area through the 1960’s. The program ended with the grand finale with the whole cast singing Those Were The Days. At left are Janice Gissler and Bonnie Anderson watching the new fashions. Hard work on the part of Senior High's and West High’s Student Councils paid off when word was received from the School Board of District 2 on February 17 regarding the abolishment of the hair and dress code. The board’s statement compli- mented the students for their responsible attitude which makes us believe that the dress of our stu- dents, perhaps, could be, and should be, left to the good taste and discretion of them and their parents. The board maintained the right, both legal and ethical, to reconsider the policy decision at any time. 41 in a s' Upper left; President Steve Coring addresses Student Council. Upper right: Harvey Mundford lectures Student Coun- cil on the uses of money to be contributed to Handi- capped. The Billings Senior High Student Council took large responsibil- ity during the 1970-1971 school year, in administrative func- tions and policy making. Students have discovered that the orderly method of voicing their opinions is to go through the Student Council and the Council Executive Board. Principle achievements during this year were meetings on student hair and dress codes with the school board, and the Council began a Humanities film series to increase student interest. A tentative project being worked on by the Council is the contribution of $625. 00 to the center for Handicapped at Eastern to buy equip- ment. The responsibilities of handling day to day business and carry- ing out executive duties falls on the members of the Student Council Executive Board. The Executive Board considers student proposals before presenting them to the Student Council for final approval. Also, the execution of established policies is up to the Board. Board members for this year include: President Steve Corning; Vice President Leslie Blair; Secretary Candi Fox; Treasurer Jack Gorton; Seniors: Bob Hill, Kate Cranston, Jill Haver land; Juniors: Andy Ole ott, Cindy Lehman, Kermit Hummel; Sophomores: Tim Cranston, Jeannie Bohlinger, John Lynn. Mr. Glynn is consulted for any problems that might arise. 1970 KYOTE Named All-State. .. Yearbook Renamed Bronc This year the annual staff felt a need for a change to a more appropriate name for the year- book. A contest was conducted and Patsy Walters won with the name ’’Bronc. They often times drew applause for their snappy, pre- cision routines from a standing crowd. The majorettes, to make money, sponsored such projects as a dance and a spring fash- ion show. With the money they made, they bought new uniforms. Sponsor, Mrs. Moselle Paulson, the leaders, managers, and the entire corps worked to- gether to make the 1970-1971 season a re- warding and successful one. Majorette Managers Patty Klimper and Debbie Reiter are the little known part of the majorettes' performances. 53 Girls Choose Bill We only just begun to live White lace and promises A kiss for luck and we're on our way Before the rising sun we fly So many roads to choose We start out walking and learn to run And yes, we've just begun. The anticipation of what the future has in store presents a challenge and is exciting. On the other hand, leaving a place that I have been very close to entails a feeling of sadness. Teaching is a rewarding profession because of the many moments of satisfaction it provides. These moments are shared between teacher and students since both are directly involved. As a classroom teacher, I am grateful to have worked with such an excellent staff and been associated with fine young men and women. The highlight for me in this area would be, as it would for every teacher, every time a mean- ingful learning experience was achieved. Coaching is also teaching. It was my good fortune to have worked with dedicated, loyal coaches, and as fine a caliber of young athletes as I have known. The shared mo- ment came in 1969, standing in the Daylis Stadium locker room amid near hysterical shouting and some tears. The Broncs had just upset Butte, 18-6, to put the second loss in three years on their record. The anticlimax was the second place finish the same year. One of the most rewarding moments I have experienced here came after our final game last fall. A young man whom I had coached for three years stuck out his hand, and with a trace of wetness around the eyes said, ’’Thanks. I say to the faculty of Senior High, who made my stay here pleasant and meaningful, Thanks. That one word expresses my deepest feel- ings of gratitude. Senior High has great days ahead of it. Second Row: Marc and Jim. Dear Students: I can remember so clearly when I first arrived at Logan Field. There was my family: Mom, Dad, Jim, and Marc Swanson, and of course, Mrs. Hutton. Like other AFS'ers, I was so anxious about everything. But such an idea went away as time passed. Yes, I found everything just the same as it had been in Japan. The difficulty for me has been language. But when- ever I go down to Mrs. Hutton's office, she en- courages me so much. After all, what can I say than Thank you ? Thank you for giving me a chance to visit your country and to stay in your school and with a new family. My dream was to go abroad. Now I've got new dreams, one is to come back here to Billings, Montana, to go hunting with my family and the other, a peaceful world. IKuo Okuda, AFS student from Tsu, Japan. I don't want to say good-bye so I simply say. . . I'll see you someday, somewhere on the earth! 64 Dear Students, In this little letter, I want to thank you for giving me such a great year; for accepting me in your clubs. It is hard to put into words how great it is to find friendship and acceptance so far away from home. Although I will never forget you, we probably won’t see each other again after this year is over. There- fore, I want to wish you the best of luck in whatever you are going to do and wherever you go. Dick Far Left: Dick and Ikuo sing This is your Land during AFS FoUies. If you were to ask me what the most fun I ever had in my whole life was, I would probably say that my visit to Germany was, without a doubt, one of the four or five most fun things I have ever done in my life up to now. Perpetually, it was not all fun and games as you might expect; in fact, it was not only fun but also games. Gee, well—in conclusion I would surely say that not only did I have fun in Germany but also I learned something somewhere and came back to be a much more learned person than before I went. Tritely yours, Tim Jacox 66 Have you seen any kiwis about? Dear People of Senior High, Thinking back over my year spent in the country ’’down under, New Zealand, I find it difficult to express the extent of the enlightening and enriching experience I have had. It is waking at seven-thirty to see froth on the beach far below; it is attending an all girl’s school in the same uniform every day; it is skiing high above a frozen lake. How- ever, it is mainly meeting people, living as they do, that makes the year so rewarding. My family, the Cowans, has three boys, ages seventeen, nineteen, and twenty-two, and a little girl, age five; Dad was a national manager of a large clothing firm. Throughout the year, we traveled through the two main islands of New Zealand a good deal, meeting a wide range of people from farmers to accountants to fishermen. As one encounters more and more people, tolerance for other beliefs expands and human understanding greatly increases. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to you for your participa- tion in AFS International, for the enthusiasm and help that is so essen- tial to the program and is so evident in Senior. In my mind, the scheme is one of the best methods of achieving greater world understanding and sympathy, and I am proud to have represented the organization and Senior High. Arnold, Larry Sichelstiel; Back row: manager Les Aldrich, Bill Spencer, Dave Cooper. When the Broncs opened their 1970-1971 football season, there was little doubt that the Broncs had another fine football team as the 4-5-1 record por- trays. All-Staters were announced; Bob Drinkwalter, Chris Card, Ron McKenna, and junior Bill Crowley. Orange and Yellow Share Berth With the football season coming to an end, the finale seemed to be the Senior-West game. For the last three consecutive years, the Broncs have dominated the event. This year, the Bears managed to hold the Broncs to a 14-14 tie. Statistic wise, the Senior High Broncs dominated the game. Bulldogs Shake Broncs' Second Place Ranking Fullback Bill Crowley out distances a Heligate Knight in a first down effort. W ith little time left, Bill Crowley concen- trates on gaining a few yards. The 1970 Bronc football team was led by many outstanding athletes. The tri-captains Bob Drinkwalter, Jack Gorton, and Byron Chamberlain were key athletes who made the team function. When the Broncs were low on ego, these three team members put forth their best to put spirit into the Bronc team. Win or loose, the Broncs always came out in fine style. 150 Broncs Settle for Fourth Place BRONCS OPPONENT 0 7 Kalispell 27 6 Missoula Sentinel 13 7 Missoula Hellgate 20 13 Great Falls Public 17 2 Great Falls Russell 6 13 Butte 10 14 Great Falls Central 0 13 Kalispell 6 15 Helena 14 14 Billings West First row: Doug Mcshane, Leo Litwin, Bill Berg, Gary Pogue, Dan Haman, Tim Lachenmeir, Dave Route, George Brush; Second row: Steve Barber, Dan Cox, Greg Cambell, Marty Brinkema, Steve Pryor, Tom Gomez, Tom Hauptman, Sylvester Booth, Mark Dahlberg; Third row: Marion Ackerman, Howard Johnson, Chuck Reilly, Brad Hossman, Jerry Drinkwalter, Dan Robbennolt, Ken Craft, Steve Kimbel. Roger Martin, Randy Hightower, Dave Reichenbach, Dave Ehresman, Tim Schuman, Tom Barry, Mark Kerbel, Joe Martinezj Vince Stephens, Coach Myers. The Bronc Harriers were short on upper-class experience with only three seniors occupying spots on the junior dominated team. For Ray Gibbons, Randy Hightower, and Scott Leckie this is their final season as Harriers. Promising athletes were dispersed throughout the junior and sophomore team- mates. Juniors Steve Hilde and Mike Layman were the most domi- nant of this group. 154 Cross Country Experiences Disappointing Year 155 Broncettes Show Promising Year Front row: Charlene vail, Laurie Sullivan, Jenny Lynn and Holly Brown. Back row: Coach Phyl Miller, Cathy Kurre, Julie Brown, Susan Pearson and Lyla Brehm. Lacking the depth needed for a team victory, the Broncettes launched a promising season of interscholastic cross country by placing runners at the top in all meets. The Broncettes finished the season with the champion and runner- up in the Billings Invitational and Southern Division Meets in sophomore Julie Brown and senior Lyla Brehm respectively, who lead the team throughout the season. This year's intramurals seemed to go over quite well. Many men turned out to take part in such intramural sports as football, volleyball, and basketball. The latter seemed to come on the strongest, with almost 20 teams com- posed of anywhere from 5 to 10 young men who competed for a championship team that would meet West High. 158 Intramurals Influence Boys Athletic Ability 1971 Broncs First Row: Mike Jerhoff, Bob Murphy, Bill Crowley, Doug Dewald; Second Row: Chris Card, Mike Michunovich, Mike Miller, Dick Carstensen, Alan Prill, Jerry Bertelson, Steve Strutz; Third Row: Daves Eames, Byron Chamberlain, Mike Miller, Mike Mading. 160 Broncs Powerhouse: Bertelson, Murphy, Michunovich, Prill.
