Bob lived with the Bolviken family during his stay in Norway. Students: There is no way to stuff into one or two neat phrases an AFS experience, even a summer one, I won't try. Even now it is hard to appreciate the full extent of that one summer. Suffice it to say that I will forever be indebted to you fellow students for the chance to be your ambassador1' (as it were) to the country and people of Norway. Bob Meismer Norway, Germany Host Summer AFS Students Bob Meismer: Our man in Norway last summer. 26 Fellow students: Judy Witherspoon went to Germany as part of the Volkswagon exchange program. Judy and Bob discuss their rewarding experiences as exchange students. Although my trip to Germany was not sponsored by the school, I am grateful to those who selected me and made such a wonderful experience possible. I was one of thirty-nine students chosen from around the United States to participate in the 1969 Volkswagon Exchange Program. I lived for seven weeks with the Wohrl family in Hannover. Neither my German father nor my German mother could speak a word of English, but my brother Hans Georg, could speak it almost fluently. The only other member of the family was Gisela, the Wohrl niece. However, since she was living with my family in America most of the time I was in Germany, I did not get to know her very well. 1 feel very fortunate and grateful to have had such a meaningful experience. Not only did I get to meet many new and fascinating people from all over the world, but I also developed greater insight into myself. I think most of all, however, I learned never to take for granted my wonderful family, friends, and country. Judy Witherspoon The Wohrl family hosted Judy during her AFS month in Germany. Stella's American family: First Row: Mari, John, Mrs. Wold. Mr. Paul Wold. Second Row: Joy. Stella, Lou. Stella Risi, AFS student from Johannsburg, South Africa. Hi Students and staff! My experience in the United States and especially at Senior has meant such a lot to me that I shall never forget what you have individually contributed in order to make my year a truly happy one. I thank you all, singly and collec- tively, for being so open and so much yourselves. My sojourn here would not and could not conceivably have been rewarding and pleasurable to me had each one of you not played a major role in making me feel one of the group . I particularily wish to thank my American family. The thanks I bestow on Dad Wold down to little John Wold is pathetically inadequate to express how much I really appreciate their overwhelming kindness and love and their inclusion of me in their family. They received a young, frightened stranger and are sending me back more mature (I hope), but most certainly more confident and tolerant. As a South African and yet a Montanan I have come to realize the truth of the AFS motto: Walk together, talk together, all ye peoples of the Earth. Then and only then will we have peace. Yours A. F.S. ly Stella Stella and Toni talk to Pete Weggers on Get It On. Stella Risi, a freshman law student at the University of the Witwatersrand in the Republic of South Africa, was the girl AFS student to BSHS this year. She was a member of many clubs including Drama, Elphadonk, and Forensics. She also belonged to Senior Council, Senior Counselors, and track. She stayed with Joy Wold, a Bronc cheerleader, and her family. Much of her year was spent speaking of South Africa to various clubs. Stella will be warmly remembered for her friendly warm-heartedness. Antonio Neto, a senior going to school at Belo Horizonte, Brazil, was the boy AFS student this year. While here, he stayed with Hugh Kilbourne and family. He was active in several activities, including gymnastics. Student Council, and band. He was also a member of Yellowstone Key Club. Tony will be studying for entrance college exams when he returns to Brazil. He hopes to go into the field of medicine. Walk Together, Talk Together All Ye Peoples of the Earth Dear Students, When I was asked to put down a few lines for the KYOTE, I confess I had the feeling I was running into trouble. I knew it would be too hard for me to condense everything I would like to say. Since I first arrived here I was impressed by the way I was received by the community, by the kindness of the students and teachers, and by my host family. This was an accomplishment essential to my success here. I was used to stopping at Mrs. Hutton's office, just to say hello. Generally those brief stops lasted for hours when I received her wise advice and opinion. My involvement in activities such as key club, band, gymnastics, and student council provided new insights and acquaintances with the students. The new knowledge acquired through the classes which I attended will be of the utmost use for they broadened my knowledge. 1 am sure you can see why I felt that inevitably there will always be a Senior High memory among my best ones. It is hard for me to express my gratitude to those who I got to know and to those who helped me because it means more than these two words: Thank you! Toni Neto, AFS student from Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Yours Sincerely, Tony Tony's American family: First Row: Mr. James Kilboume, Tony, Mrs. Kilbourne. The play by Mr. John Baber, a music teacher at Lewis and Clark Junior High, is an un- published verson of The Emperor's New Clothes. Mr. Baber put much more humor into his edition than the original. The lead performers were Mark Burdick as Tom, Karen Hummel as the Queen, Jim Swanson as the King, and Todd Yeager and Russ Jessee as the evil weavers. B-W Day was a crushing defeat for West. B-W Day was sponsored jointly by both West and Senior Highs' student Councils. The parade which travelled downtown streets was carried locally on KOOK T. V. The theme was Orange Power. BKC won first place with its float of a clenched fist. YKC took second with its theme, Creme of Bear Soup. Z Club placed third with Stir ’em up Broncs. This was the first B-W Day parade with floats in three years and it consisted of nearly 32 floats from West and Senior combined. Homecoming dance was sponsored by Pep Club and its theme was Orange Power. 32 One old sheet makes the outfit complete. m Senior flames with school spirit. ? The annual Christmas Concert at Senior High was presented on December 16-17. The main part of the program was the choruses under Mr. Brandvold's direction. Various ensembles, such as the Madrigals, Chamber Singers, Akzents, Key- notes, De Havens, Motifs, Var- settes, and Tempos provided enter- tainment. Solos by Bill Haver land, Colleen Huber, and Debbie Schott were very popular with the audience. The String Quartet performed and provided accompaniment for some of the songs. Much time was put in by the chorus students both in prac- ticing and painting the Nativity scenes which were used as back- ground. The finale of the concert was the combined choruses singing the traditional hymn Silent Night . A Sidelong Glance at Senior A school is many things besides class- rooms. It is the service provided by clubs such as making posters before games and a calendar of events. A daily part of the school is the second period announcements. For a large number of students, the parking lot is an important part of school life. The smoke stack plays a major roll as it provides a scenic outlook and pollutes the air. An enjoy- able and profitable innovation are the candy machines in the cafeteria. In less than a year they have become an established tradition at Senior High. Delegates Learn of Political System Boys' State, held August 16-24 at Western Montana College in Dillon proved to be a valu- able learning experience for all involved. The American Legion sponsors Boys' State in order to acquaint the boys with government on the local, county and state levels. BSHS was repre- sented by ten boys chosen from 24 candidates. These delegates were Terry Ashcraft, mayor; Gary Brese; Jim Dana, mayor and Associate Justice; Kim Johnson, City councilman; Kyle Litwin, Chief of police; Mike Moses, city attorney; Fred Nelson, mayor; Tom Powers; Gary Sherman, city councilman, State Party chairman; Tom Stone, state central committee. Gary Sherman was one of the two boys chosen to represent Montana at Boys' Nation. Five girls from Billings Senior High were sent as delegates to the 1969 Girls' State at Montana State University in Bozeman. They were Marilyn Morledge, Bonne Morledge, Barb Balock, Kris Ellingson and Janie Turner. Offices captured by Senior Higher's were: Mayor of Court City, Barb Balock; County Superintendent of Schools, Kris Ellingson; Associate Supreme Court Justices Marilyn Morledge and Bonne Morledge. Oliver is sold to an undertaker and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Sowerberry, played by Mike Stratford and Lynda Loff. Oliver runs away to London where he meets the Artful Dodger, Wally Kurth and Alan Hill. Dodger takes Oliver to Fagin, Steve Holmes, who teaches boys to steal. While at Gagin’s, Oliver meets Nancy, Karen Hummel, a barmaid and Bill Sykes, Jay Dudik, a thief and Nancy's boyfriend. One day, Dodger takes Oliver out to be a pickpocket. Oliver is caught and his intended victim, Mr. Brownlow, Bob Meismer, taJces him home. Bill Sykes forces Nancy to help him kidnap Oliver so he can not tell the police about them. Nancy later regrets her part in the kidnapping and tries to take Oliver back to Mr. Brownlow who has found out that Oliver is his grandson. Bill kills Nancy and then is killed himself. Oliver is returned to his grandfather and finally finds the love he has been looking for. I'd Do Anything For You Be back soon. Mr. Branvold The play, Oliver”, was presented February 10 to 18. Cross Country Provides Fall Sport for Girls Girls Cross Country proved very success- ful in its first competitive year at Billings Senior. A large turnout of participants was due mainly to the fact that there were previously no fall sports for girls. Under the coaching of Miss Phil Miller, the team finished the season in fine style. Val Thompson was the standout for the Broncettes. We are all looking for a fine show again next year. G.A.A. Combines Work, Play for Fitness Girls Athletic Association is one of the most active groups at Senior. The girls meet each Monday and engage in the sport of the season. Basketball, field hockey, volley- ball, crab soccer, and softball are but a few of the sports. G A A. Football and basketball halftimes were the scene for most of the performances. Majorette leaders were from bottom to top, Margaret Jenkins, Vicki Fiala, and Kris Ellingsen. 85 Cheerleaders Boost Broncs Varsity Cheerleaders Allyson Baldwin, Karen Lazetich, Sharon Cunningham, Joy Wold, Mary Carstensen, Betsy Carlson, Pam Zeigler, and Lonnie Cassady kept Bronc Spirit at an all time high. Their under study sopho- mores were Jeri Walker, Stacie Bolme, Diane Pekich, and Karla Weidrick. The system of cheer- leader selection by student election proved to be effective this year, so it will be used in the future. 1970 Broncs Front Row: Dave Eames, Kyle Litwin, Dan Pekich, Mike Jerhoff, Paul Schmaltz, Mike Moses, Byron Chamberlain; Back Row: Jerry Bertelson, Gary Sherman, Alan Prill, Mike Miller, Terry Ashcraft, Darryl Timnicliff, Mike Michunovich 1970 Colts Front Row: Paul Larsen, Bob Brown, Tim Sherman, Mike Mading, Mike Miller, Steve Strutz, Dan Drum, Gilbery Lopez, Brad Zeigler, Bill Shipp. Back Row: Mr. Scheidt, Mark Wagner, Doug Dewald, Don Nagel, Tim Herst, Richard Carstensen, Darold Lund, Richard O'Leary, Tim Lawson, Bob Wasalaski, Dennis Huss, manager Kyle Litwin was the Bronc standout in the scoring department this season. As can be seen by the pictures above and below, he had his ups and downs this season. Dan had a very good season this year. Not only was he second in the scoring department, but tops on de- fense. Here you can see him up for short shots after he has driven for the shot. 89 Pekich Leads Broncs in Bear Upset Ashcraft and Tunnicliff: Tough on the Boards Darrell Tunnicliff was acclaimed by radio broadcasters to be one of the roughest basket- ball players this season. A strong rebounder, Darrell has a compelling urge to win as can be seen in the pictures. Terry Ashcraft got off to a slow start this year but finished the season in fine style. Terry believes when the going gets tough, the tough get going. The Bronc team spirit was kept high through his constant efforts when needed. As can be seen above, Terry not only plays basketball well but teaches ballet in his spare time. Prill: Big Man on the Floor Big A1 the kiddies pal Prill was about all BSHS had in the height department this year. Often the six foot six figure was seen picking off rebounds off the top of the twelve foot high backboard. Allen was not only tops in defense but played a very fine offensive game as well. A1 finished the season fourth in scoring for the Broncs. 92 Bronc Starters Have Five Back-Ups Mike Michunovich, Dave Eames, Gary Sherman, Mike Moses, and Jerry Bertleson played very well as backup players for the starting five. Coach Lazetich played almost everybody each game. Broncs Split Even With Cross-Town Rivals In regular season play this year, the Broncs broke even with the Bears. After being shocked for a nine point loss in the first part of the season, the Broncs bucked back for a decisive thirteen point victory. The win was due to the superb defense and Bronc spirit which kept up the Bronc momentum. It Was a Tough Year Although not lacking in potential and material to work with, the Senior High Broncs took a turn for the bad this season as shown in their record. However, when the team was up, the score showed it with several wins over higher rated squads. Often times in vital situations, Coach Laz resorted to using his bench. Sophomores Dave Eames and Jerry Bertleson proved useful in tight circumstances, filling in for the senior starters. First row: Gary Brese, Steve Clark, Chuck Weldon, George Anderson, Tony Ketterling, Dave Childers, Mark Skeie, Rod Michael, Jeff Michotte. Second row: Henry Martin, Mike Meyer, Steve Porter, Randy Beckers. 1970 Gymnastics Gymnastics Become a Major Sport at Senior The Senior High Gymnastics squad under the coaching of Mr. Neil, finished the season in fine style. Despite many injuries, the gymnasts performed with the usual Bronc determination. Far left, Mark Skeie performs on the rings. Upper left and above, Gary Brese reveals his style. Young Grapplers Show Promise for Future The 1969-70 wrestling season was just a warm-up year for the 1970-71 class AA state champions. Paced by senior Pete Olson, Juniors Scott Leckie (pictured at left), Larry Sichelstiel, Frank Pollari, Steve Gerber, Steve Smart, and sophomores Dave Richenbach, Terry Vail, and Ken McMillan, the Bronc's tallied a 4-12 overall record but were coming on strong at the end of the season. 101 Young Wrestlers Show Promise for Future Coached by Mr. Olson, the 1970 wrestling squad composed of mostly sophomores and juniors gained much needed experience. Although they didn’t place high in the State, prospects look very good for next season as most of the entire varsity will be returning. Pete Olsen was the lone senior on the varsity squad. Boys Intramurals Plan An Important Role at Senior Boys' Intramurals, headed by Mr. Aagard, Mr. Glynn, and Mr. Jimison, are an important part of the Senior High Athletic Program. Flag football, volley- ball, and basketball are the main sports. At the end of the season for each sport, the championship team challenges the West High championship team. This enables boys who aren't involved in varsity com- petition to participate in the sport of their choice.
