Due to construction, many classes were transferred into out-of-the-way crevices in the main building. Mr. Duecker's classes met in the auto shop, civics and American history were put in the cafeteria and audi- torium, and band practice rooms were offices. Mr. Aagard prepares an American history lec- ture in his compact office. Using lapboards for desks American history students take notes while Mr. Aagard lectures in the auditorium. Four civics classes meet together each period in the cafeteria. Civics is taught by team teaching. 22 Construction Progresses During Summer The new addition hides the main building from the parking lot. Additions to the gym reach to the edge of Daylis Stadium. Billings Senior High will soon have additions with facilities for a new li- brary, science labs, and 25 classrooms. Work on these additions is expected to be finished in January, 1967. Glass walls enclose the stairways from the main building to the addition. 23 Loendorf Wins Two Offices Delegates to the 1966 Girls State convention were Judy Howard, Lorna Veraldi, Sheila Loendorf, and Sandra West. BHS’s Girls’ Staters were Sandra West, Sheila Loendorf, Judy Howard, and Lorna Veraldi. They spent the week of June 23 to July 1 on the campus of Montana State Uni- versity. By running for politi- cal offices in mock elections the girls learned how de- mocracy works in our state government. Judy Howard was elected Fire Chief. Sheila Loendorf gained a double victory by being named Justice of the Peace and Chairman of the Fish and Game Depart- ment. Sandra West was Speak- er of the House. Girls’ State delegates participated in a mock court trial, elections, talent and fashion shows, and a graduation ceremony. Girls' Staters model their ribboned hats, souvenirs of a hectic week on the MSU campus. Sandi West won the election for Speaker of the House at Girls' State--a statewide honor for BHS. 2a Mr. Collins congratulates Fred Urbaska on being elected to Boys' Nation. Dave Gorton and Bruce Moerer pose in hats they borrowed from Girls' State delegates Judy Howard and Lorna Veraldi. BHS’s Fred Urbaska Goes to Boys’ Nation Boys' State representatives and alternates were Richard Sigman, Dan Farmer, Jim Balestra, Dan Kosich, Jeff Madsen, Dave Gorton, Bruce Litwin, Carl Berger, Fred Urbaska, Dick Morrow, Richard Wilson, Bruce Moerer, Kirby Reed, Barry McDonald, Mark Randak, and Jim Crawford. BHS’ Boys’ State dele- gates met boys from all over Montana in Dillon dur- ing the summer of 1966. The delegates were chosen from a list of nominees submitted by the teachers to the junior boys. At Boys’ State the boys ran for of- fices in mock elections for state and city governments. Boys’ State gives boys a chance to learn about and understand our state gov- ernment , commented Fred Urbaska. Bruce Litwin was elected treas- urer of Bannack City. Fred was elected mayor of Colter City and was named a delegate to Boys’ Nation. 25 Jorge poses for Kyote photographers with his two sisters, brother, and parents in the Balestra home where he lived during his year at BHS. BHS Welcomes Jorge Fidalgo I want to thank all the school, who by their kindness and hospitality have given me in Senior High a fantastic year which I will always remem- ber. The whole student body has changed the rather bad idea I had about the American people into a fabulous one, which I hope to get around in Spain. Again, thank you very much indeed to every- one of you. Jorge and Jim practice their song for AFS Follies. Jorge forms the center man in a pyramid structure made up of ’’Ralph s Rangers.” Jorge studies during class in one of the new rooms in the annex. 26 Barb Returns From Australia Barbara, wearing her school uniform from Australia, tells Mrs. Barbara Grainger Hutton about her years as an AFS student. In January of 1967, after a year in Australia as a foreign exchange student, Barbara Grainger returned to BHS. In Australia Barbara lived with the Don Phillips family in Sydney, a city of 2 1 2 million people, which was quite a change from Billings. Barbara attended the Jannali Girls School with her sister , Cathy. Barbara visited a mining town in the sheep country of Australia, the capital city, Camberra, and Kingscl iff, where the Phillips rented a beach house for three weeks. Cathy, Linda, Jenny, Joann, and Mrs. Phillips look on as Barbara feeds a baby kangaroo. Barbara’s sister, Cathy, models her school uniform. 27 28 Jeri Drum Queen of B-Day Festivities Pep Club Sponsors Dance and Assembly B-Day festivities began on Thursday, November 10, 1966, with the assembly. The theme was MHow the West Was Won 1 Queen candidates were Linda Price, Jeanne Cox, Carolyn Flynn, Jeri Drum, and Kay Witherspoon. At the dance Thursday night, Jeri Drum was crowned B-Day queen. Her escort was AFS student Jorge Fidalgo. Because of the snow and low temper- atures, the parade was cancelled. The floats were judged in front of BHS. Although the Broncs lost the football game to the West High Bears 13-6 school spirit at the game, dance, and assembly made homecoming a success. Jeri Drum, escorted by Jorge Fidalgo, was crowned queen at the homecoming dance. Other queen candidates were Jeanne Cox, Kay Witherspoon, Linda Price, and Carolyn Flynn Candidates and their escorts dance to the queen’s dance. The band begins to play as Jeri Drum is announced queen. 29 BKC's winning float sits proudly in front of BHS. There was no parade due to snow so the floats were judged in front of the school. B-W Day School Spirit Is Snowbound John Darling attentively leads the BHS drummers. Drum Majorette Sherry Cox leads the band onto the field for the B-W Day halftime. Cheerleaders Maude Lyles, Donna Clark, and Sheila Loendorf await a ref’s deci- sion. 30 BKC Finally Drowns YKC Key Clubbers fight to win the water fight while they try to stay dry. At the front of the hose there is always a struggle to hold the nozzle. Drenched Key Clubbers on puddled tennis courts discuss the fight. 31 Fidalgo, Lyles Chosen Ice Royalty Under the direction of club sponsors Mrs. Schummer and Mrs. Woolsky, and club pres- idents Marilyn Barrow and Gini Hill, AK and Kinetic joined forces for the Christmas Formal. On December 9 couples entered The Land of the Pink Snow and danced to the music of the Happy Four. Surrounded by decorations, the Happy Four played dance music. Glittering gates marked the entrance to the Winter Ball. Members of AK and Kinetic clubs worked together in decorating the gym, supplying refreshments, and planning the formal. Sharon Rimestad and Dennis West seem to be enjoying the Christmas formal. 32 Candidates for Ice King and Queen climbed up on sleigh thrones when they were announced at the assembly. Candidates for Ice Royalty were Sandra West, Susan Jacobson, Sherry Cox, Maude Lyles, Margie Hanson, Bruce Litwin, Jorge Fidalgo, Jim Balestra, Jeff Madsen, and Mark Randak. The student body voted twice in determining the king and queen, who were crowned at the dance. King Jorge and Queen Maude pose at their castle-like throne. The decorations theme. The Land of the Pink Snow, was carried out with miniature pink trees, silver stars, and a haze of angel hair which covered the gym dance floor. Couples took the silver stars home as souvenirs of the good time they had. Because the dance floor was very crowded, some couples headed for the outskirts of the floor to dance. 33 AK Sponsors “This Is Your School' Escort Irv Hanson helps Miss Broncette put on the bracelet awarded her by AK Club. Irv Hanson adjusts Rosalyn s crown while Sheila presents her with a bouquet. On February 17 AK sponsored a This is Your School assembly in which all clubs helped to show Miss Broncette the school she repre- sented. AK also sponsored an after game dance. The student body nominated Kris Nybo, Sheila Loendorf, Norma At the dance on Friday nl5ht, February 17, Rosalyn was crowned Tirrell, Barbara Grainger, and Rosalyn Russell on February 16. Miss Broncette for 1967. 35 Rosalyn Russell Voted Miss Broncette BHS Presents Christinas in Song Accappella singers, with their eyes on Mr. Brandvold, begin a medley of Christmas carols. Four carolers await their cue. Chorus students prepare for Christmas performance on December 19 and 20. 36 Angels, Clown Entertain BHS Art Jennings, a former clown, performs magic and clown stunts at BHS. BKC's Mel's Angels seem to be having a little engine trouble on their cycles. Mr. Jennings included his ideas on teen-agers in his act. BHS cheerleaders lead students in the B-R-O-N-C-S cheer. BKC's cheerboys, Fred Urbaska, Jorge, and Dave Gorton inspire the boys to cheer. 37 r Peanuts” cast members Mr. Wrightson, Jan Carlson, Leroy Griffing, Jane Baker, Stuart Jackson, and Sheila Loendorf as Snoopy, add a touch of humor to the 1967 AFS Follies. Z-Clubbers, disguised as Charlie Brown and his All-Stars, presented the AFS Follies on February 7 and 8. During inter- missions the Peanuts cast performed. Billings Key Club’s band, the Tijuana Trash, played their versions of popular songs. Talent like Barbara Marsh singing ’’Summertime , Nancy Morris twirl- ing a baton routine, and folksinger Paul Hudgens singing ’’Kathy Song’’ made the Follies a success. To conclude the program, Barbara Grainger and Jorge Fidalgo explained the goals of the American Field Service. Z-Club members sell tickets to the AFS Follies to two sophomores outside the doors to the cafeteria. In a monologue Beck Clark becomes The Mad Woman of Chaillot. 38 Peanuts Cast Presents Follies Bill Jackson gives advice and pointers on how to get to heaven in Captain Stormfleld’s Visit to Heaven. Nancy Morris, aided by BKC's Tijuana Trash, performs a baton routine to So What's New? Z-Club sponsor, Mrs. Roe, Jorge Fidalgo, and Barb Grainger enjoy the fund-raising AFS Follies. Other acts in the 1967 Follies included Becky Clark’s presentation of ’’The Mad Woman of Chaillot” and Jorge Fidalgo’s and Jim Balestra’s interpretation of a Spanish love song. One of the most popular acts of the Follies was Barbara Marsh's version of Summertime. 39 BHS Presents the Sound of Music Jack Casey, as Captain Von Trapp, reaches for the hand of Maria, Linda Schneider, in the wedding scene of The Sound Of Music. Mr. Brandvold gives last minute instructions to the Mother Abbess, played by Georgianna Reich, before she goes on stage. Calm actors and actresses play cards in the cafeteria while they wait for their cues. Much work was done to produce The Sound of Music. Preparation was involved not only in memorizing lines, but also in making sets, planning dances and songs, and sewing costumes. The directors for the musical were: Music-Mr. Arthur Brandvold, Ann Salsbury, and Karen Cranston; Dramatics-Mr. Lloyd Mickelson and Marcia Ennis; Costumes-Mrs. Arthur Brandvold and Diann Hammerstrom; Orchestra-Mr. Robert Roper; Choreography-Mr. John Barber, Marilyn Barrow, and Vicki Smith; Staging-Mr. Lester Heins and Stan Putnam. Without the help of directors, committee members, and Billings’ businessmen the musical could never have been produced. Make-up girls keep the actors in order, but leave the dressing room in a mess. 40 At the end of the musical, after the Von Trapp family has escaped over the mountains to Switzerland, all of the actors and actresses join in saying farewell to the audience. Nervous and excited, the nuns wait for their turn to go on stage. 41 Gerdes, Schneider Star As Maria After five scheduled performances, and one extra performance by popular demand, The Sound of Music came to a close, but work continued. All the sets were taken down, destroyed, or stored. The backstage area was cleaned. The stage floor was scrubbed. Programs, carelessly tossed in the auditorium aisles by the week’s audiences were gathered. Signs announcing The Sound of Music were removed from Billings’ store windows. But a part of the musical is kept — the memories of the good times backstage, the fears on stage, and the success of both of these feelings will not be forgotten. A member of the stage crew starts the big job of taking down sets. Maria (Susan Gerdes), the new governess, is received by Captain von Trapp. Susan Gerdes and Linda Schneider, the two Marias, flee the audito- rium after a long week. The school sign announces the musical's production dates. Because of overwhelming success, the musical made an extra performance on November 27. 42 12 Senior Scholars Honored Jim Balestra and Sandi West look first places in the Elks Youth D.A.R. award winner for 1967 was Jane Baker. Civics Students Observe Legislature On February 9 students set out for Helena to see the state legislature in action. Civics classes raised money for the trip by bake sales and with the aid of service clubs. Everyone in bi-annual legislature is involved in the sale’s tax battle. Students receive tourist information about the Capital. -i 44 BHS Adds 18 New Classrooms Modern architecture and open skies connect the old with the new. In February of 1967 the annex was opened for classes. The bright, wide halls lined with pastel lockers gave a new look to BHS. Teachers and students were glad to be relieved of the crowded conditions of 1965 and 1966. Students and teachers join forces to complete the moving process. The sunlit floors, white walls, and pastel colored lockers make the annex contrast with the old building. 45 Efficient Staff Produces Annual Kyote Annual Staff-FIRST ROW: April Clark, Stephanie Zirko, Sharon Rimestad, Mr. Voorhis.
