The foreign languages available at Senior High are French, Spanish, German, Latin, and Russian. First-year students of a foreign language learn the basic verb con- jugations and sentence structure. Later, they concentrate on vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. During the second and third year, students study the more complex verbs and grammar, and review previous learning. BHS OPENS DOORS AUGUST 31 Senior High was officially opened on August 31, 1965. The new Sophomores came at 8:30 a.m., while the Juniors and Seniors came later at 1:00 p.m. The Sophomores went through their classes and then went to an assembly given by the Senior Counselors, where the school’s uniforms were modeled in a style show. The narrators were Ken Davidson and Nancy Doherty. John Pulasky gave the main speech on the challenge of being a Sophomore. The assembly was a success with the Sophomores. There must be a mistake. It works. Now I know what they mean by multiple-guess. I told you school started on Tuesday, not Monday. Kim Hart tells a sophomore where to go. 102 Mr. Kaser gives an electronics lecture. During the 1965-1966 school year, five new subjects were introduced: geology, public speaking, Russian history, art ap- preciation, and crafts and design. Geology, a science course open to any student, is the only full credit course. The remainder are 1 2 credit, semester courses. Both crafts and design and art appreciation are open to any student with an interest in art and art history. These courses have been offered to the student as a solid background in the field of art. The purpose of public speaking is to give students the opportunity to increase their speaking ability. The last, Russian history, is offered both as a separate course and as an extension of the Russian language courses. Mr. Duecker displayes a Greek Orthodox icon. 103 BHS TRIES A BICAMERAL SYSTEM STUDENT EXECUTIVE BOARD—LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Thorson, senior president; Jim Balestra, junior president; Mark Foos, vice- advisor; Don Jung, treasurer; Randy Korber, senior vice-president; president; Dave Gorton, junior vice-president; Bob Story, sophomore Nancy Doherty, secretary; John Pulasky, president; Mark Noennig, vice-president; Paul Jakab, sophomore president. The school year of 1965-66 is BHSfs first venture into bic- ameral government. Now, besides the Student Council, there is a Student Executive Board, which meets in the teachers1 lunchroom with Mr. Thorson every third period. The ten students on this board are the president and vice-president of each class and the president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer of the Student Council. Al- though the Student Council has the final word on all legislation and recommendations, the board is delegated the authority to carry on the day-by-day activities of student government. It also acts as a sounding board for student and administrative opinions. The money raised by the candy and pop machines and the Jukebox is used for projects that will benefit the entire student body. In addition to their regular work, the members of the Board head permanent committees of Student Council representatives. The Student Council consists of one representative from each second period class. They meet at least once a month in the chorus room, where they act on the suggestions of the board, bring up new business, and hear committee reports. The Executive Board patronizes one of its projects. Nancy Doherty reads the minutes of the last meeting. Tammy Feldner makes a suggestion during a Student Council meeting. 104 BHS BOASTS FOUR CHORUSES Butterflies, girls? One of the nicest customs at BHS is the carolling done by the chorus classes on the day before the Christmas holidays. However the car- olling is a very small part of the program planned by the musical department. Led by Mr. Brandvold, the major choruses-Varsity, A Cappella, and Concert-put on at least three concerts annu- ally and provide the talent needed for any musi- cal production. In addition, small groups of these students, such as the Madrigals or the Folksingers, spread the name of BHS across the state by singing for dinners or luncheons, and conventions. Each year the program ia climaxed by human Christmas trees, complete with evergreen bough and Christmas lights. 105 Campaign headquarters is the busiest place on campus. Chris Henrickson, Tammy Feldner, Peggy Gountanis, and Kay Martin represent BHS. 4 REPRESENT BHS AT GIRLS’ STATE The Bozeman campus was the center for the 1965 Girls State. Luggage stacked, the girls get ready to head for home. Four Senior girls were given the chance to attend Girls State last summer from June 25 to July 2 at Bozeman. Sixteen girls were originally nominated by the faculty. The girls of the Junior Class chose four delegates and four alternates from these sixteen. The delegates were Sandy Lazetich, Chris Henrickson, Peggy Gountanis and Tammy Feldner. The alternates were Kay Martin, Elaine Kaufman, Kathy Eide, and Bonnie Ay re. Because Sandy was unable to attend Kay took her place. At Girls State, delegates from all parts of the state formed a mock government. They used a two party system; the parties were the Gold and the Blue parties. Through these parties, girls were nominated to offices on city, county, and state levels. In addition to these activities, the girls took a tour of the Moat Court trial, studied parliamentary procedure and etiquette, and presented a graduation ceremony. Governor Tim Babcock was among the guests at the graduation. Chris Henrickson presents a skit as part of her campaign. 106 8 PARTICIPATE US BOYS’ STATE Alternates to Boys' State: Tom White, Doug Aden, Tom Kirk, Stan Wax. The eight boys form BHS were John Pulasky, Don Jung, Jack Buck, Bill Wolfe, Ken Ehresman, Terry Jones, Dave Brickley, and Ken Davidson. They were chosen by the boys of their junior class from a list of nominees submitted by the teachers. At Boys' State, the delegates ran a mock state government con- sisting of twelve cities in four counties. Through two political parties, the Pioneer and the Frontier, boys were elected to offices identical to those actually held in our state government. The boys also at- tended three schools entitled Law Enforcement, Legislative Pro- cedures, and Law. Governor Tim Babcock, Mr. Frank Murray, Mr. Orvin Fjare, Miss Harriet Miller, and Mr. Frank Hazelbaker were among the important people who spoke at the two general assemblies. John Pulasky described Boys'State as primarily a course in practical government. The 1965 Christmas Formal was the combined effort of AK and Kinetic Club. To promote the ’Winter Wonderland” theme chosen by Cathy Clayton’s decoration com- mittee, a cookie shop with life-size Christmas cookies was set up at one end of the gym and large cardboard Christmas Cards were hung on the opposite end. Streamers of red and white, large cellophane wreaths, and tiny stars hanging from the false ceiling completed the decorations. Steve Berger and Linda Boyd work diligently. Larry Woodward, Linda Schartz, Karen Olson, and Scott Balsam chat during a break in the music. Students wait for the music to begin. 118 The Christmas formal was jointly sponsored by AK and Kinetic. Humanities took on new meaning for BHS students in the form of weekly lectures. These lectures were to acquaint the juniors and seniors with the humanitarian aspects of art, lit- erature, philosophy, and music. During their civics and junior honor English classes, students reported to the auditorium where a lecture was given by either a BHA teacher or a guest speaker who was an expert in his field. Ideally the lectures were arranged in series of four with one guest speaker in each series. Mr. Nesbit refers to his chart on William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury during his lecture. 128 1966 NATIONAL MERIT FINALISTS Lynn Adams, Dennis Skovgaard, and David Bick were the 1966 National Merit Finalists from Billings Senior High School. In their junior year, several thousand students in the United States took the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Eyes left EVERYBODY! The 1965-1966 school year marked the be- ginning of an entirely new concept of student govern- ment at Billings Senior High School. The traditional student council system employed at Senior High for many years was completely revamped by a Consti- tutional revision in the spring of 1965. A new governmental organization, the Student Executive Board, emerged in September 1965 to assume its place of leadership in student affairs. The ten-member Student Executive Board consists of the president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer of the Student Council, plus the president and vice-president of each of the three classes. This group was delegated the authority to carry out the day-to-day business of student govern- ment. The Student Council, consisting of homeroom Representatives from each classroom, meets reg- ularly as needed to establish broad areas of policy. The actual details of government are handled by the Student Executive Board. The Student Council retains the veto privilege as a means of controlling the activities of the Executive Board. Each day, during third period, the Executive Board meets in the faculty lunchroom to carry out its functions. These daily meetings prove to be a much more efficient system of getting things done. When trying to conduct business under the com- mittee system, it was always difficult to get the committee members together at one time or place for meetings. With the Student Executive Board meeting daily, this problem has been solved. 10% CHOSEN AS HONOR STUDENTS NATIONAL HONOR-FIRST ROW: Mr. Myers, Ken Davidson, Kim Hart, Chris Hendrickson. The forty some young men pictured on this page represent, as I am sure many know, the Billings Key Club of Billings Senior High. As Key Clubbers, these young men also represent leadership, service, and fellowship. To a Key Clubber, leadership carries many respon- sibilities. To an individual, leadership is the ability to get one's Job done and done well, and at the same time, cooperate with others. To an officer, leadership is the ability to coord- inate and thus guide an effective and efficient club. Finally, to an organization, leadership is the ability to keep our title as First in Montana. Service, to any Key Club, is of equal importance with leadership, for service is the purpose of Key Club, while leadership is its means. Billings Key Club serves not only our school but our community as well. To the Key Clubber selling hot dogs at a Bronc home game, to the one ushering at a school play, to the one helping kids at the Friendship House, the purpose of Key Club is the same-service. Key Club is not, however, all give, for each Key Clubber, if he wishes, may take something very important from Key Club——fellowship. To a Key, fellowship is not a trite word in some dictionary. It is the guy standing next to him: his finger, just as bloody from stuffing napkins; his feet, just as cold from selling in the stands; his head, bowed just the same before each meeting. A Key Clubber must represent leadership, service, and fellowship. I must confess to being very proud of the young on this page. Kim Hart President, BKC 154 B.K.C. BUILDS A WINNER At first the results of the work on the float seem fruitless. The football player on the float was one of the most complex structures in the parade. Key Club workers apply finishing touches to the animated football player. Even girls, such as MJim Ennis, want to work on the winning float. Key Clubbers could note with pride a fine replica of their emblem. The float with the animated sawmill won first prize in the annual B-Day Parade, 155 B.K.C. SERVES SCHOOL Russ Jones and Tom Kirk are only two of the B.K.C. members B.K.C. members discuss club plans at a meeting, who spent many hours at the Air Fair Concession Stand. B.K.C. conducts weekly board meetings to plan school and Dave Bick applies the finishing touches to the paint job at community service projects. Somewhere Else. The year 1965-66 was a year of action for Billings Key Club. Under the leadership of Kim Hart, many projects serving both the school and the community were under- taken. B.K.C. sponsored a boys' group at Friendship House throughout the year. The sign in front of the school would have been bare if B.K.C. had not changed the announcements from day to day. During the summer vacation, ambitious members gave the B a fresh, new look with a new coat of paint. Nearly every weekend during the summer, members picked trash from a historic site in Billings. What would Fire Prevention Week have been without the B.K.C.-Y.K.C. Water Fight? B.K.C. members spent two months in the blazing summer heat repainting the then drab exterior of Teen Town. Bronc football games just wouldn't have been the same with- out the B. K. C. concession stand. B. K. C. placed cakes in the teachers' lounge before Christmas and pumpkin pies before Thanksgiving. B.K.C. members showed their zeal by building the winning float in the B-W Day Parade. B. K. C. sponsored a car safety check and a safe driving trophy to promote highway safety. B. K. C. 's school service and community service projects helped to make 1965-66 successful. Mr. Dimich, Billings Kiwanis member, confers with several B.K.C. board members to coordinate plans of the two groups. 156 B.K.C. SERVES COMMUNITY Mr. Wrightson, BKC sponsor, contributes to J.O. Bill Tumquist presents magazines to Mr. Nesbit as a Christmas present to the faculty. Gary Johnson and Ted LaBard promote good school relations by attending a Y.K.C. meeting. John Weber serves his time in changing the school marquee. Ted LaBard sells goodies to two Bronc boosters at a football game. The Broncs opened their season with an impressive 41-12 victory over Sheridan. Dan Crowley, who converted from the fullback position to take the quarterback role, led the Broncs on the offense as he passed and kicked the visiting Broncs to victory. After dropping a hard fought game to Butte, the Broncs came back and romped to a 27-7 victory over Helena. Perry Lyles pushed and ploughed his way through the Helena defense scoring a pair of touchdowns. The Broncs followed by bowing 34-14 to undefeated Great Falls Senior and dropping a 19-9 loss to Missoula Sentinel. On their next trip, the Broncs crushed Missoula Hellgate in a game where the Bronc defense held Hellgate scoreless and the Bronc offense ran and passed for 34 points. In their finest showing of the year the Broncs handed the pre- viously undefeated Great Falls Central a 7-6 upset. Punches and Schultz sparked the Bronc defense, plaguing Central with pass interceptions and fumble recoveries and holding the opponents to 64 rushing yards. Threatening all the way, the Broncs lost to Great Falls Russell by 12-6, but homecoming brought a welcomed 13-6 victory over Kalispell. The West-Senior game was a sour note for the Broncs in their final game of the season as the Bears passed to a 13-2 victory over the determined Broncs. Move it, you guysl Brenda and Bonnie in action. The grid men, splitting 5 wins and 5 losses, had a fairly successful year considering they were one of the smallest teams in the Big 10. ’’The boys did pretty well this year,” said head coach Jerry Walker. ”We always would like to do a little better. Our team, even though small, gave 110% effort at all games.” The best team effort of the year was in the Great Falls Central game. The Bronc defensive team did a fine job in stopping the Mustang offense. The Mustangs, up to that point, had been atop contender for the Big 32 title. The 7-6 Bronc upset ended any Mustang hope for the championship. Outstanding players for the Broncs this season included Dan Crowley, who acted as both co-captain and quarterback; Dave Jennison, who also doubled as co-captain and tackle; Gary Schmidt, who did a great job as a lineman; and Perry Lyles, who led the Broncs on offense. 183 VETERAN SENIORS PROVIDE STRENGTH Punches prepares to hurdle the line Tony Blanco Dave Jennison Steve Berger Perry Lyles 184 Cliff McCluskle Dave Brickley Bob Punches Gary Schmidt Crowley and Skovgard close the trap. K BRONCS TAKE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP Running in an outstanding display of team effort, this year’s cross-country team ran undefeated in regular meets, and topped off the season by taking the State championship at the Lake Hills Country Club. Under the able coaching of Coach Myers, the Broncs began their training early in the school year. While most students were on their way home from school, the cross-country team was puffing and panting on the many hills of Pioneer Park. By the first meet in late October, the team was in good shape, and ready for the competition. In the opening meet against Helena, Laurel, and West, the Broncs took a solid first with 33 points, while Helena, who had 51 points, was the closest opponent. The team followed with four more solid victories in regular meets to take a clean sweep of all their races. The State champs ran strongly in the meet with the qualifying runners including Ken Ehresman-who placed fifth- Dan Margrave, Gary Schiedecker, Bill Ehresman, and Jim Ashcraft. Coach Myers, in commenting on this year’s successes, stated, ’’The most outstanding feature of the team was that all the members worked together as a body. There were no individual stars, but we did have several top runners. The State Champs gather around their trophy Emotions before the big race. Although the team did not compete in any competion, as a highlight to the season the team put on a half-time performance at the last home basketball game.
