Class H1 tory lt was a beautiful September morning in l9hl when sixteen shy little boys and girls took their places 1n Room I of the Billing's Grade School Those ans werlng the roll call for Mrs Ruth Cloud were Wayne Batson, Freddie Brashers Henry McCollon, Donald Harp Ronald Harp, James Lee Mayfield, Rob Roy Miller, Dale Rohlman, Jerry Salchow, Celly Joe Wise, Shlrley Demanche, Ruby Brown, Lorna Reese, Ellzabeth Spears, and Betty Lou Gardner At the beginning of the second year, we gained Gerald Wayne Raga1n, Fayne Rohl man, and V1rg1e Marle Fllbeck Under the years of our elementary work was completed sponsorship of Mrs Ruth Cloud two Garbee Wagemann was our teacher The next year as we entered Room II, Mrs Donald Harp, Ronald Haro, James Lee By thls t1me we had lost Henry McCollon Mayfleld, Celly Joe Wlse, Rob Roy Diller, Jerry Salchow, Shirley Demanche, and Ruby Brown Durlng the two years ln this room we galned Beulah Lane, Betty June Skaggs Harold Bengsch, Darrel Johnston Eugene Harp, Dale Mooneyham, Myrna Robson, Donald Harp, Ronald Harp, and Marjorie Fern Smlth In the year of l9L5 we were quite proud to enter Room III We remember the day when Miss Gladys had to leave us 1n charge of a h1gh school girl We were all pun1shed for d1sobey1ng Mlss Gladys' orders not to talk Over the two Vear perlod we had galned John Crabtree, Max Maples, Marlene Maples, Jlmmie Starbuck Marlene Holderby, Jesse Mooneyham, Pat Myers, Dearl Lane and Owen Lee Slavens By the end of the slxth grade we had lost John Crabtree, Marlene Maples, Max Maples, Jimmie Starbuck, Myrna Robson, and Lorna Reese As we had completed the first s1x years of our elementary work, we were ready to move across the hall to Room IV Mrs Willa Mae Polly was our seventh grade teacher We prepared for our first year lh h1gh school under the spon sorship of Mrs Alice Pearce The following received diplomas and enjoyed a Lane, Ellzabeth Spears, Ann Wllson, Harold Bengsch, Darrel Johnston, Dale Rohl man and Betty Gardner When we trooped up to h1gh school we were jolned by Rose Harter, Joan Kitten, Marvln Donaldson, Richard Garbee Barbara Ebert, Rob Roy Miller, and Wayne Batson Llke most youngsters durlng their flrst year of high school we were called 'green freshmen W Miss Faye Andrews was glven the Job of sponsoring us Durlng our sophomore year we thought we were higher than the class thathad gust entered as freshmen Mlss Faye Andrews was again our sponsor By this time we had lost Marlene Holderby and Wayne Batson We had gained James Schatz V1rgin1a Verfurth, Ray McConnell, and Myrna Robson Of our JUn1OP year we have many happy memories We presented the play 'Gallop1ng Ghosts' under the leadershlp of Mrs Clara Welch By presentlngchig play and doing other adventurous thlngs, we were able to sponsor a Junior Senior Banquet at Heer's Garden Room 1n Sprlngfield, followed by a line party at the G11l1OZ theatre to see 'Quo Vadis Durlng this year we had lost Ann Wilson, Dale Rohlman, Rob Roy M1l1er, Myrna Robson, and Ray McConnell Now we are SGHIOFS, sorry but proud, to leave dear old Billings High School We would l1ke to express our gratltude to each of our teachers during the past who have been so klnd and conslderate of us They have had some very fantastic experlences during the years that have helped us to gain the knowledge that we now have We would l1ke to g1ve Mrs Clara Welch and Mr Dean Dobbins spec1al recognltion as our senlor sponsors For the senlor party we all enjoyed the wrestling matches at the Shrlne Mosque Those fraduating are the following Rose Harter, Jim Schatz, Barbara Ebert, Marvin Donaldson, Virginla Verfurth, Harold Bengsch, Joan Kitten, Darrel Johnston, Beulah Lane, Richard Garbee, and Betty Lou Gardner The only member of the class completing all twelve years of work in Billlngs Publ1c Schools is Betty Lou Gardner o ' . : , , . . a , . . I4 'W QOL It was a cold winter day, December 31 1987 when our car stalled in front of a blg stone pile that called 1tself a house which was located Just off ma1n street in Billings After going to the door to see if we could use thelr telephone to call a garage, we found the house be longed to Mr and Mrs Marvln Donaldson, the former Barbara Ebert They now have seven chlldren Marv1n will be runn1ng for Presldent of the United States in the next electlon They told us that Darrel Johnston owned the town garage, and he was doing good business His wlfe fthe former Martha Ann Brown! takes care of their three children As we talked w1th Mr and Mrs Donaldson they declded to show us the town, and we ate dinner at the Sunset Cafe wh1ch is owned and operated by Rlchard Garbee Yes, T'was the same old Richard, ha1r parted ln the center, and h1s Jeans gust as t1ght as ever H1s hair is sprinkled w1th gray now That merry twinkle in his eyes is st1ll there though Wh1le we were talklng over old tlmes, a new good looklng car rolled up A sophistlcated young woman got out Her hair was p1led hlgh on her head and she was expensively dressed On second look we d1scovered it was Virg1n1a Verfurth She 1S a dress buyer for the large firm tween them showed lt m1ght lead to a great romance While on our tour through B1ll1ngs we went for a dr1ve 1n the country and VlS1ted the turkey farm wh1ch was owned and operated by the old maids of our class of '53 Betty Gardner and Beulah Lane They have about 250,00 turkeys They are dr1v1ng a new up to date L1ncoln automobile On our way back to town we stopped at the Green Meadow Farm, owned and operated by Harold Bengsch He now has 30 head of Grade A Guernsey cows He has qulte a large income from them I was terribly surprlsed to learn that he, too, was a bachelor and out on the farm by hlmself Marvln and Barbara told us that the former Rose Harter was a verygoodstenographer for Mercury Auto Supply in St Louis Her employer 15 also ner husband They now have s1x pa1r of patterlng feet around the house J1m Schatz has a good income from his DOSlt1OD as the town phYSiC1am If anybody has an ache or pain they are sure to v1sit his office I was not sur prlsed that he became a doctor but I always expected h1m to be pulllng peoples teeth I, the former Joan Kitten and my husband Robert being On our vacatlon were en route from Denver to St Louls We are the owners of the Jo and Bob Furnlture Store in Denver After we had con tacted all our former classmates we were notifled that Mr Johnston had our car ready for travel again So we started on our way to St Lou1s where we were to V1S1t the former Rose Harter and her family X f :QW xl' W . , . f of lu! rfl.
