The Circle Game Yesterday a child came out to wonder Caught a dragon-fly inside a jar. g . Fearful when the sky was full of thunder, And tearful at the falling of a star. And the seasons, they go round and round W And the painted ponies go up and down. We're captive on the Carousel of time. We can't return, we can only look behind From where we came and go Round and round in the circle game. Then the Child moved ten times round the seasons, Skated over ten clear frozen streams, Words like, when you're older, must ap- pease him, And promises of someday make his dreams. We Can't return, we can only look behind From where we came and go Round and round in the circle game. Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now. Cartwheels turn to car wheels thru the town. We look with pride upon your accomplishments and we feel a stronger sense of security as we face the future. As children of turbulent sixties and young adults of the backlash seventies you have been on the rollercoaster ride of American thought. You have experienced both the strong liberal and conservative thrusts of the American people, You can only be vviser and better for this experience. So, as the number of young people in this country decreases and we become a nation of older citizens, your generation may receive the mantle of leadership at an earlier age and keep it for a longer period of time If that is to happen, I look with confidence upon the days to come, Again, my congratulations and best wishes!
