You will never again have the opportunity to compete mentally and physically or to gather socially with your peers at the secondary school level. Some have employed the past four years well and have aptly demon- strated purpose and achievement in every facet of their total effort. There are also those who have not used these years to demonstrate the achievement of which they are capable. All of you, however, comprise the class of 1969 and all of you will assume new responsibilities, meet different challenges, and follow var- ied paths leading to selected goals common to your interests. It is my fervent hope that you acquire the attitude that you need for your per- sonal success, that you contribute positively toward the solution of the problems of society, and that you strive to gather and constantly im- prove an empathic awareness of your fellow men. J. David Nuttall, Prifwipul . 1 . IT Congratulations class of l969 for having successfully completed your high school education. Best of luck, good health, and success in whatever endeavor you may undertake in the future. These are troubled times and the heart of our nation depends on the guidance it will receive from our new generation. l hope the training you have received here at Bil- lerica Memorial High School has succeeded in accom- plishing its primary goal, of assisting you in becoming a good citizen. William V. Archambault, Vice-Principal Congratulations to you the class of 1969. Now that you have completed your high school education and are about to step out into the mainstream of life, may I wish you success, health, and happiness. For those of you who may be called upon to serve your country, may you fulfill your obligations in an honorable way. John D. O'Brien, Vice-Principal Mysterious Voices of the P. A. -ev ,.- 5 .l N. :QS-. I appreciate very much this opportunity to congratulate the class of 1969 and to leave a brief message with you. America needs the new ideas of its young people. It needs their idealism. It needs their beliefs. Beliefs make a man or a woman-belief in God, yourself and your country. Hold on to them and protect them. They are what make us infinitely more important than a machine. They are what make us men and women. Frederick C. Riel Superintendent of Schools 6 -all 411' Congratulations on obtaining your first major aca- demic goal and best wishes for continued success in your chosen fields, be it an immediate position in busi- ness or industry or further academic endeavors. David L. MacKenzie Assistant Superintendent of Schools My sincere congratulations and best wishes to each graduate. The attainment of a high school diploma to- day represents many more demands and much greater efforts than ever before. Your response to such de- mands gives clear evidence of your fitness for the chal- lenges ahead. I feel a special relationship with the class of 1969. Four years ago I came as a freshman to the Billerica School Department. My years have been the most re- warding. I hope that you also feel the same. William H. Every year, graduating classes are inundated with advice and praise, memories are invoked, futures are alluded to, advisers heap fond wishes of success upon their soon-to-depart classes. All of it, really, is too standard to mean anything to anyone. I do, however, wish you to leave with this thought in your minds: You are done with high school, and you cannot return to high school age again, physically or emotionally-you are no longer school children. For down the darkened lonely skies Sweet winged spirits swiftly sped On that unique and awesome flight Which takes them far from this, our love Beyond all faulty earthly joy Above all petty human foils Their airy path does swiftly lead To joys eternally secure. Beyond the lands of human bond Beyond the ken of Adam's toil They soar into that purer air Of blissful peace and joyful rest. Soar on O Souls! O Valiant Ones! ' This year's team had only three runners returning from last year's top ten runners. The team was also the smallest in number since the sport was initiated in 1959-due to the split sessions at the Junior High. The seventeen runners who did come out for the team were the most dedicated runners that I have ever coached in my nine years of coaching Cross Country. The team was led during the season by Captain Joe Bradford who won eight of the twelve races in which he competed. He is a good college prospect and plans to go to Bates in Lewiston, Maine, to major in English. Junior Co-captain Robert Cormier was our second man during most of the season. He set a new course record on our home course which he hopes to break again next year. We were very fortunate to receive a transfer student from New York-Wayne Hall-arriving in Bil- lerica the first week of school. He was a great asset to the team alternating between second and third man for us. He plans to attend the University of Massachusetts and major in Social Studies. Bob Cummings, a Na- tional Honor Society student, having been out for only two years on the team, did an excellent job alternating between the fourth and fifth place position. Bob intends to major in Math or Science at Lowell Tech. The only other senior on the club also with only two years of experience is Charlie McClure, who was our sixth and seventh man on the team. He plans to attend Brigham Young University. A 1 JEL Returning next year will be Junior C0-captain Rob- ert Cormier, Stephen Muse, and Andy Micozzig return- ing sophomores will be David Mitchell, Peter Ander- son, Harold Baroni, David Cooke, James Burke, David Bradford, and Ken Vittumg the two freshmen compet- ing were Richard Mayberry and James Foster. The boys said that their biggest pleasure this year during the Cross Country season was defeating Chelms- ford by one point on their own home course and giving Billerica the championship. M. H. S. . . These were the opening words of the speech by Bill Gamble, the Senior Class President, on Graduation Day in June, 1969. As I sat amid 380 of my classmates waiting patiently to be graduated from B. M. H. S., I finally faced the realization that today would be my last day as a high school student. Slowly drifting away from the speech and the graduation ceremony, my thoughts wandered back to my first day at Billerica High. . . Bewilderment and confusion dominated those first few days as a Freshman four years ago, but it didn't take long to adjust to the new atmosphere. As soon as the new school year got under way, Mr. Jahnle, our class adviser, held class elections. We elected Joanne Tilton as President, Laurel Canty as Vice-President, Jeanne Fogarty as Secretary, and Madeline Meehan as Treasurer. Class projects and social events were begun immediately in order to start our class treasury. Christ- mas and the semi-formal dance passed, and soon mid- years were over. The second half of the year was high- lighted by the Granny Dance, co-sponsored with the Seniors, and the Freshman-Sophomore Dance. Both were highly successful as many students turned out to enjoy Dave Maynard, a disc jockey from WBZ radio, at the Granny Dance and to hear a local band at the latter dance. Before I knew it, the year had flown by and the summer vacation arrived. My first year of mak- ing new friends and creating long-lasting memories had come to a close. In a few short months we were back in school, but much less scared and puzzled than before. All our Freshman officers were re-elected with the exception of the Secretary's position which Margaret Wheaton ac- quired. In addition to studying, the year was full of fun and excitement including dances, parties, class trips, cupcake sales, football, basketball, and hockey games, as well as wrestling meets. Our major project of the year was a basketball game in which our faculty played the WMEX Good Guys. The event was well patronized, and everyone involved was pleased with the great results. After sponsoring our second Freshman- Sophomore Dance, soon another year came to a close- and with it, a thousand remembrances. I couldn't believe I was finally an upperclassman when my Junior year began. A new group of officers was elected. The results were Billy Gamble as President, Chris Graham as Vice-President, Linda Finethy as Sec- retary, and Madeline Meehan as Treasurer. We proudly received our class rings and watched Christmas and mid-years fiy by. Before we knew it, Prom time arrived. I'll never forget the excitement of buying a gown, pick- ing out flowers, and rushing at the last minute to get everything ready. Love Is Blue, held at the Montvale Plaza, was an enchanting change from the too familiar school halls for all who attended. Who can forget the following day at the beaches and the tremendous fun everyone had together? The weekend produced a great many memories and was the perfect climax of another completed school year. My Senior year had always seemed so far away, but suddenly there I was-a SENIOR! This year held so many wonderful times for everyone in the class. After re-electing all our Junior officers, we started immedi- ately on the task of organizing our activities. The an- nual spaghetti supper was first, followed by the candy sales and Class Play. Everyone worked together on all our projects, all the while enjoying themselves. No one could forget the cafeteria and Senior lunch and the crazy things we all did or finally beating Chelmsford 24 to 6 on Thanksgiving after nine years. Prom time came again, and another memorable event was added to my list. None of the excitement was lost the second time around . . . with a start, I noticed the first row of my classmates was going up to receive their diplomas. Soon it would be my turn. Unknowingly, my thoughts had drifted to encompass my four memorable years of high school. As I rose to proceed to the front of the stage, I realized that they were the best years of my life. uv. 3 'Tm ,SLP i 5 . if A e q .- sv I y-,,. 5 ,7 I 1. Wild in the Streets .... .... Q? Spirit, enthusiasm, and co-operation have all been associated with the Class of 1969, but these qualities would have been useless without the con- stant guidance and interest of our Adviser, Mr. Jahnle. Continually, through four years of high school, no one has exhibited such an abundance of cease- less devotion and untiring effort for the benefit of a B. M. H. S. class. We consider ourselves very fortunate to be the class which has received such profound assistance and never-ending patience. We have so many distinct and pleasant memories of our high school years due to your unselfish dedication that it becomes difficult to express our sin- cere thanks for everything you have done. By helping to mold our personali- ties and characters, you have helped us to mature in numerous ways, and by organizing all our activities, you have made these past four years enjoyable and memorable. Few classes can boast of such a leader. Now that we have completed our high school years, we know that the knowledge, enjoyment, and success acquired by a class depends on the good inspiration of its Adviser.
