This Is Billerica Memorial High School Billerica Memorial High School . . . education in many forms ... students and teachers and hooks . . . green and white Indians . . . a beacon guiding us safely onward . . . friendship and leadership . . . a symbol of spirit and democracy . . . opening doors for all who wish to enter . . . guidance for those gone astray . . . a sprinkling of hard work and pleasure . . . our high school. The Class of 1966 at Billerica Memorial High School in Billerica, Massachusetts, is pleased and proud to present its yearbook, the WARRIOR. 16 1966 Warrior Staff Clubs and Activities Photography Typists Literary Sports 18 One member of the faculty has given more than her share of service to the Senior Class. This teacher has supervised the production of our yearbook, the 1966 Warrior. The teacher of whom we speak is Miss Jahnle. She has spent much of her free time unselfishly helping us, the Yearbook Staff, to put together this book; and without her help and guid- ance, the task would have been insur- mountable. So, in our own small way, we of the Yearbook Staff offer on behalf of the entire Class of 1966 our heartfelt gratitude to Miss Jahnle. 19 In Appreciation Billerica Memorial High School has been fortu- nate in having among its faculty “Chuck” Lamp- son. One of the best-known and most-respected teachers in our school, he, in his many years of teaching, has contributed to our class and to many others like us countless hours of service. For twenty-five years he has spent many long and tedious hours coaching our varsity football team. In this and in other smaller, but no less impor- tant, ways “Chuck” has exhibited his concern for the future of our class. In return, we, the Class of 1966, join former graduating classes in expressing our gratitude to him. We, the Class of 1966, thank our Principal, Mr. Chester D. Ingraham, for his devotion in leading us, guiding us, helping us, and inspiring us. He has neither refused to lend a “helping hand” nor refused to show interest in our problems and in our activities. We shall never forget his patient, untiring efforts. The Class of 1966 wishes to extend to Mrs. Patri- cia Cain, adviser to both the Senior Class play and to the Cheerleaders, a most sincere “thank you” for her untiring efforts on our behalf. The Senior Class play, one of the highlights of our Senior year, is an enormous task. Laborious hours and patience are but two of the ingredients which have made not only our play but also our Cheerleaders highly successful and outstanding. Any person who has devoted as many years of her life to the teaching profession as has Miss E. Ruth Belcher must be called a “dedicated teacher.” She has shown a sincere interest in all her students and has devoted innumerable hours to preparing students for college. We deeply ap- preciate Miss Belcher’s assistance and wish her to accept our sincere “thank you.” 21 OUR FACULTY . . .the leaders of our world . . . they are helpful . . . interesting . . . uplifting . . . and fun . . . always appearing when mischief is brewing . . . always maintaining their poise in times of mass hysteria . . . personally always urging us onward to higher, more successful goals . . . stern and smiling . . . serious in lecture and lovable at heart . . . yes, they are our leaders . . . so to them, ' ' Thank you. ' ' You have now completed a giant step toward success. You have been trained to make sound judgments. However, knowing what is right does not lead you to pursue what is right. The fact that man knows right from wrong proves his intellec- tual superiority to other creatures; but the fact that he can do wrong proves his moral inferiority. Lack of courage is the cause of our moral inferi- ority. Have the courage of your convictions and live up to your ideals. Frederick C. Riel Superintendent of Schools To the Class of 1966: First let me offer my congratulations to the graduat- ing class of 1966. The successful completion of your high school education is a mark of which you may be justly proud. But more than the pride you feel, the challenge you now face is so exciting as to cause envy within me. The spirit of American youth, which was torched by our late martyred President John F. Kennedy and contin- ues to glow throughout the night at Arlington National Cemetery as a constant reminder, has been asked to better the world. No greater challenge has ever been issued. No greater response has ever been given. Yes, the invitation extended to our youth and ac- cepted by so many causes me envy. As youth fades, the realization comes fast that the world belongs to the young. I have envy but my confidence is great. William H. Flaherty, Jr. Assistant Superintendent of Schools 24 Superintendent and Staff Mrs. Lyons Miss Dole 25 SCHOOL — a time of joy; a period of inaccessible goals, often attained but in the imagination dreaded and feared; hopes and ambitions flashing across the screen of the mind ever changing, ever altering, ever varying to the emotional framework in its reaction to the multiple stimuli of such indefinable conditions as success, security, ideals, and affluence. PRESSURES — ever mounting; seldom ceasing; yet in the interim time out for football, baseball, basketball, hockey, track, cross country with their thrills for the school spirit minded student; the dances, the clubs, the social functions with their important part in the pattern of every day school life; and the vacillation that all students experience in preparing for the future, for positions, for further education. EPILOGUE — graduation, the commencement of true education; the realization of the inestimable value of a general knowledge that cannot be measured by dollars and cents; the backward look; the vow that if school, this entire experience, were to be repeated in retro- spect, what a different result, what a regrouping of resources, to encounter all these advantages to the full. Chester D. Ingraham Principal Much has been expected of you young men and of you young women during your four years as students at Billerica Memorial High School. During these years you have been a part of a proper educational environ- ment at school and you have benefited by the wisdom and the guidance of your parents at home. Your teach- ers and your parents have earnestly endeavored to guide, instruct, and prepare you for the day when you must form your own judgments, unreservedly and fear- lessly, without friendly counsel. Soon you will transcend the security of home and of school and embark upon a new course in which you alone will be required to ponder and select those con- cepts which represent what is best for you and for humanity. Do not be influenced by imprudent opinion, relativism of thought, or unsubstantiated theories how- ever popular. Cling tenaciously to your principles, base your assents upon evidence, and accept nothing with- out a reason. You have a future which many young people in many lands may dream of but can never attain. Enter it confidently and strive in your every action to make it even better for those who will follow you. Class Advisers As the Class of 1966, you have completed four years of high school education — formal, in the classroom; informal, from your association with the Billerica Memorial High School faculty and student body. Your education (learning, if you wish) is just beginning, although some of you are now leaving the routine of formal education. No learning is ever completed. May your future be successful and rewarding in the continuing search for truth and right. John Lalumiere Elma J. Sarkisian Class Advisers Did you enjoy the Junior and Senior Proms and the Class trip? Behind each of these and all our other events and activities which were so im- portant to us during our high school years, were two persons — Mrs. Sarkisian and Mr. Lalumiere. By the many self-sacrificing hours which they spent in behalf of our class, they have exhibited their concern for the youth of our country. They have contributed to the building of our characters and have given us our most enjoyable experiences in B.M.H.S. We offer our gratitude and thanks to our Class Advisers. GAA Past, Present, and Future It is the year 2,000. The setting is a high school se nior talking with her grandmother about high school in the years 1962-1966. “Grandma, what was high school like when you went to school? Was it as it is now? Tell me.” “Oh — I remember when I was a Freshman. I was so frightened of my new environment that I was ready to turn tail and run. I can re- member how the Seniors teased my friends and me, sending us on wild goose chases around the building. “It didn’t take long for the newness to wear off. Soon, it was as if I had been there all along. Time flew that year — the Christmas semi- formal (my first), the Valentine Hop, midyears, finals — then the year was over. “Summer passed, and I was a Sophomore. Oh, the trials. I remember the changes in so many of my friends and classmates. You should have seen our cafeteria that year at Christmas. The preparations for our semi-formal had transformed it thoroughly from the everyday rows of tables to scenic enchantment. Then, again, before I knew it, another year had flown by and with it, a thousand and one memories. “The year 1964-65 brought my Junior year and the formation of the Student Council in Billerica Memorial High School. That was a big year. Most of all, I remember the beauty of my Junior Prom. All the last-minute preparations — classmates scurrying, toting palm trees and flowers. Our “Hawaiian Sunset” took us from our usual, everyday rou- tine and placed us on the steps of Heaven. “When I finally received my class ring, I was so proud; and it made me begin to realize just how close graduation was. Then, all of a sud- den . . . “I was a Senior! I thought I would never make it. I thought it was a million years away. Our Senior officers were: President, Charles Gerossie; Vice-President, Jack Yarnell; Secretary, Pauline DeBenedic- tis; Treasurer, MaryAnn Meehan (otherwise known as Charlie). Next we made efforts to present a Spaghetti Supper. I remember, too, the collection of pictures I made. Time flew on the wings of an eagle. Christmas and midyears passed before my weary brain. Before I could take a second breath, our Senior Class Play was here and then gone. It seems that we worked endlessly before it was ready for the ‘public,’ and, yes, it passed as did everything before it and everything yet to come. “Next, before our dizzy heads could clear, we were looking back on it all — the Senior Prom, the Alumnae Banquet, Graduation — all of it.” ‘‘You know, Grandma, wish had lived back in the ‘Old Days: ” Valorie Bruyere 97 Cutest Smile Linda Ritz and Mike Cloutier Most Sophisticated Steve Knowles and Valorie Bruyere Most Talkative Gerry Polli, Bill McGowan Harry Wright Cutest Janice Young and Gordon Kinsman 1 1 ! m Most Studious Brenda Rogers and Ronald Thresher Class Athletes Alan Martell, MaryAnn Meehan Ray Demers BMHS Spotlighters Class Flirts Fred Latham and Linda Sullivan Class Dancers Jack Yarnell and Marjie Tajima 99 Most Fun to Be with Joe Sacoco and Sandy O’Connor Class Couple Tom Conners and Joma Lavery Class Artists Marilee Brown and Jack Yarnell Most Talented Tom Bolz and Kathy O’Connor Most School Spirit Mike Hastings and Pauline Wright 100 Most Likely to Succeed Arthur MacDonald and Phyllis Salowsky Class Workers Charles Gerossie and Pat Mascianica Friendliest Arthur Fowler and Linda Mcdams Best Dressed Beverly Wallin and Gordon Kinsman Class Clowns Sara Iverson and Fred Fraize Diane Cormier Pauline Wright and Charron Pelletier, Co-Captains Carol Stewart Cheerleaders Nancy Wholly 102 103 Football Mike Cloutier Ray Demers DEFENSE — Front Row: Dave SchofF; Mike Cloutier; Butch D’Errico; Ray Demers; Steve Battcock.
