Superintendent's Office Q The free man, when ignorant, is a dangerous man. Our society demands certain learnings and competency. May you make the best of your opportunities and achieve success in whatever vocation you choose. I have great confidence in you. Frederick C. Riel Superintendent of Schools fb 1 I. ,gp Sf Q gfL . -.Q P., ,Q .fviy A f N. .f -- V 1ll ' Miss Dole. Svcrvmry. Superintendenfs Office Lady ,O ,J,. 9 o Superior instruction has been equated to the possession of a degree of immortality, since the efforts of the superior teacher to hone the intel- lect of his students, in the appreciation of true knowledge through mental excellence, is trans- mitted, partially, to succeeding generations of students. This degree of immortality should be the quest of the enlightened graduate as he ap- plies his talents to the challenges of his particular vocation in a manner calculated to improve the present status of humanity. Hopefully, our young men and our young women, possessed of culti- vated and probing intellects acquired through education, will discover and employ a unique alternative to the methods ineffectually practiced during the present time in the solution of the problems of mankind. John D. Nuttall, Vice-Principal o Education to a nation is like a tree to the earth. It is through students well trained in the humanities, sciences, and the values of self-denial that the forces of democracy are strengthenedg just as it is through the many compounds of the soil that a tree flourishes to maturity. Used wisely and delicately education will ever contribute to and foster the democratic ideals reproducing them in new forms and types. Accordingly a tree will husband its resources to the same ends-to endure and continue ever stronger, ever mightier. Neither needs miiltary weapons nor political machinations, both need nature, the one the soil, the other students. Education like the soil is the cheapest commodity in the defense of the demo- cratic way of life or the preservation of a tree. Chester D. 'Iliff 121 The Memory BOX I have no doubt that about the year 2500 archaeologists will leave their plastic, glass, and chrome cities to search the rubble of ancient Billerica seeking new knowledge of a primitive sub-culture that once flourished there during the latter part of century XX. If they are meticulous enough, they might find a large battered box in the basement of what was once a suburban home. In that box will be assorted artifacts dating from the period 1960-1964. But for the time being, this box contains not artifacts, but a living chronicle of four long, yet short, dull, yet interesting, gone, yet not forgotten years. Come! Let's empty the contents and relive four years at B.M.H.S. Here on top are some of my freshmen mementos. Remember the first day of high school and that sign over the door that said Welcome Freshmen ? Well, there's a piece of it over yonder. Here is one of the socks I wore to the Sock Hop and a G- cleft from the Romance-in-Rhythmi' dance. Here's my old wallet with my first locker combination scrawled across the front. Look! A freshman class ballot-Let me see: Ronald Bernarducci, Presidentg Jane Knowles, Vice-President, Eileen Buchanan, Secrefaryg John Grady, Treasurer. On the back is a list of the NINE different people we had for English I. Next we find fragments of a sophomore year spent wrestling with Algebra II, Civics, and Latin II. I-Iere's my favorite copy of Julius Caesar autographed Reggie '62. ' Remember Mrs. Drescheris geraniums? Well, there's a piece of her plant pot over there by an old Nixon for Presidenti' button. And underneath that is a souvenir from Candy Cane Coronation. 122 A year later the big things were class rings and 890 slide rules. There's an animal I made during one of our fabulous glass bending labs, along with a broken thistle tube from Chem and my 296 compass and straightedge. I even have the last record played over the P.A. at lunchtime. I-Iere are my memories from Rhapsody in Blue : Seven strips of crepe paper-one for the queen, Patti lnnisg and one for each attendant-Cheryl Ahola, Jan Hagerty, and Patti Columbus, Donna Patterson, Diane Carlton, Sandy Melendy. Further on in the pile we have a napkin from Blinstrub's, a teasing comb, a menu from Skip's, a U.N. button, a screwdriver from the shop, a bent fork, a string from a basketball net, a steno pad, and a menu from Monticello's. Around the edge of the menu is written, Sullivan for President, Rosey Loranger for V. P., Jolean for Secretary, and Lavery for Treasurer. On top, just below the ketchup smears, is written Victory.l' And now comes the final year. Bills! Bills! Bills! Look-bills for class pictures, class dues, college boards, yearbooks, reservations to the Old Coach lnn-and still more bills! But if this is the most expensive year, it is the richest in memories. Don't forget! This is the year of the Beatles, elbow patches, Colangelo and Lavery for Secretary and Treasurer, stretch slacks, no prayers in school, the Monkey, college applications, Cheaper by the Dozen, the N.H.S. horse show tand dog- burgers. J, B. Z. for President, yearbook meetings, Senior Week, Nadeau for V. P. , interviews, Senior parties, and Bon Voyage. ln a few weeks we can add a tassel and a diploma to the heap. Then we can put a lid on our memories, store them in the obscurity of attic or cellar, but we will never forget them. 123 Mr. Gill Industrial Arts S' l 124 Woodworking Machine Shop Automotive Hum Mr. Samson ,D 5v 51121 ,- 5:1-AV, I, K-. ,jg Oh, I dOn't know about that! This is especially true of year- book publishing, in which mass production methods have the tendency to force one to buy just what the other fellow buys. Making of soap or soup or salad dress- ing by mass methods is one thing. But it is quite another to attempt to produce a creative yearbook by trying to squeeze it into some pre-conceived mold. It just can't be done that way. The Wm. J. Keller firm brings together highly trained craftsmen, the very finest papers and ink of superlative quality. Add to these a unique service plan built around the individual school, and, finally, produc- tion by the Velvatone process, which Keller perfected especially for the printing of yearbooks, and you have a truly distin- guished performance. Q a yearbook with singular character and individuality . . . we call it THE LOOK OF THE BOOK. The yearbook you are presently Ieafing through is the product of the Keller custom program.
