I APPRECIATIO 51' 3 Miss Baker Miss Belcher It is often said today that dedicated teachers are diilicult to End, but at B. M. H. S. We have many. The patience and understanding you have shown us have placed you above the others. We, therefore, wish to express our gratitude for the inspira- tion you have given us. We respect your judgmentsg we admire your leadershipg and we proudly hail you as teachers and friends. Class of 1963 Mr. Lampson Mrs. Messer 2 As teachers we have endeavored to make available to you those experiences which would stimulate you to devel- op your potential to its fullest, and to meet your intellectual, esthetic, vocational, and social needs as an individual, as an American citizen, and a member of the world community. The degree to which you put into practice these high ideals is the degree to which you will be of true value to yourself, to your family, to your community, and to the betterment of mankind. E. E. Splaine Behind every production stands an unseen sponsor - an ever present help which few see and fewer fully appreciate. Yet without this aid no project can be carried out, no great deed done. To the Class of 1963 you were this invisible hand. You have spent long hours on the details we had forgotten and have given in- valuable advice without which we would have floundered helplessly. To you, our advisors, we say a simple but sincere thank you for your unselfish contribution to each individual, to our class, and to the school of which we are so proud. As you leave the portals of your Alma Mater, your train- ing ground for leadership, and enter into that field of activ- ity you have chosen to become leaders, you have the sin- cere wishes and eamest hopes of your teachers, that the principles of leadership, fine.character and good conduct which you have pursued while at school will serve as a con- stant source of strength in the life ahead for each one of you. Frank j. Luciano Senior Class Advisor, 1963 3 SENIOR MESSAGE Congratulations on a job well done. Your teachers have tried to foster in you the growth of aptitude, desire, and oppor- tunity. They have given you scholarship, problem-solving power, and discrimination. My sincere hope is that you now use these tools for your ultimate success and happiness. Mr. Riel OUR MESSAGE TO YOU VVe, the graduating class of 1963, would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the invaluable examples of leadership, integrity, and self-determination you have set for us to follow. We appreciate the association we have had with you and hope to become a credit to you and Billerica Memorial High School. Class of 1963 Miss Do Miss Lyons Mrs. Houlne YEARBOOK MESSAGE High school offers every student many responsibilities and privileges. VVhen each pupil receives his diploma, his education will figuratively begin. In each case, however, every boy and girl will have left something of himself or herself to enhance the success of Billerica Memorial High School. The members of the Class of 1963 upon encounter- ing life, through their experiences and great values derived from their attendance at Billerica Memorial High School, by necessity, will and must assume an ever intensifying re- sponsibility to their school and society for the progress of this great country in which they live. It is only through a highly informative population to which each and every young adult must contribute unstintingly that the level of education can be raised to a degree so that progress can truly be established. The loyalties, behavior pattems and scholastic demands made upon all students of the Class of 1963 should encourage them to reach high for their goals, to never waiver in their ideals, and to ascertain swiftly the good from the evil in any situation. Those of us who remain at Billerica Memorial High School as teachers and administrators encourage all to re- tum when it is necessary for guidance and assistance so that no opportunity is lost to assure each and every mem- ber of the Class of 1963 our continued loyalty. Mr. Ingraham OUR MESSAGE TO YOU VVhen duty calls, the brave in heart and strong in character answer. In all that you have ever accomplished, justice and humility have tempered the steel of your decisions. Your unyielding sense of righteousness has ever impressed us and helped us to govem ourselves. For your part in molding our future we express our heartfelt appreciation. May we bring credit to you, to our school, and to the community of which we are so justly proud. Because of her health, Mrs. Cassin, our class ad- visor for three years, was unable to continue in her work for us this year. We would like to wish her the best of health and once again say thank you for all her efforts in our be- half. 11 As those before us, we, the Class of 1963, acknowledge your outstanding leadership in the field of education. Your prodigious efforts on behalf of the youth of our town have had far-reaching results. You have sought to mold generations of students in a pattern desirable to God and men. You have so strongly exemplified the qualities you sought to instill that it is to you that the Class of 1963 extends both congratulations and thanks. Sloper january 11, 1946 - june 10, 1962 Lord, make me an instnunent of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love, Where there is injury pardon, where there is doubt, faith, where there is despair, hope, where there is darkness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to under- stand, to be loved as to love, for it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to etemal life. At that time we held the distinction of being the largest class to enter B.M.H.S., but soon this was lost. Behind us lay two memorable years at Howe Junior High. Ahead we knew not whatl Somewhat bewildered but eager, we set to the task of making our mark at B.M.H.S. Chosen to guide our path as advisors were Mrs. Messer, Mrs. Cassin, and Mr. Luciano. Our oflicers for 1959-60 were Paul Pickovvicz, Presi- dent, Karen McDewell, Vice-President, Donna Taylor, Secretary, and Barbara McGinness, Treasurer. Football highlighted the fall season as our var- sity and jayvees captured the Lowell Suburban League Championships. Many found need for their talents in Circus Carousel, sponsored by the Dramatic Club. As Christmas rolled around, so did the annual G.A.A. dance, Snow Queenf' MaryAnn Cambale represented us as attendant. With the arrival of Spring came our long awaited Freshman Dance. After much considera- tion we chose the theme of Bunny Hop. Will we ever forget the multitude of bunnies that adorned the cafeteria posts? As quickly as the school year had passed, so too did the summer, and once again we roamed the corridors of B.M.H.S. A vote of confidence for another term was won by each of our four officers. October was a busy month planning for Fall-Time Fiesta, our Sophomore Dance. Snow Queen attendant this round went to Barbara McGinness. The girls' basketball team captivated the scene during the winter months, Hrst claiming the' Suburban League Championship and then going on to win first place in the Ashby Tournament. Anticipation reached fever pitch as spring dawned on the horizon. Who were to represent our class as members of the cheering squad? The four coveted positions were earned by Donna Taylor, MaryAnn Cambale, Judy Nyhan and Joanne Wilson. September 1961l Back againl G-floor tenants! At last had come the dayl We entered upon a new role, that of upperclassmen. Only one change on the political scene. Sandra Bavis re- placed Donna Taylor as Secretary. Highlight of the fall season concerned our class ring. The contract was up for renewal or cancellation. After much thought, we decided to keep the traditional pattem of emerald green. Although our football season was not too suc- cessful, laurels were won by other sports. Our Cross Country Team claimed the Lowell Subur- ban Charnpionship for the second consecutive year. This was also the second undefeated season for our field hockey team. Curtain Time initiated the holiday season. This was followed by the excitement of the Thanksgiving rally, game, and dance at which Donna Taylor and MaryAnn Cambale were chosen co-captains of the cheering squad for 61-62. Candy Cane Coronation closed the holiday season with MaryAnn Cambale serving for the second time as attendant in the queen's comt. The greatest event of our high school days thus far came in May, our Junior Prom, En- chanted Eveningf' An atmosphere of enchant- ment enhanced all of us as Queen, Janice Went- worth, and King, Larry Alting, mounted the throne amidst a sea of radiant flowers and cherry blossoms. Starry-eyed attendants, Janet Troiano, Iudy Bacon, Beverly Bates, Ruth Paradise, Kay- leen Johnson, and jane Dempsey, added lustre to the grandeur of the occasion. Cheering tryouts stole the scene next, with Patti Valentino, Rose Sergi, and Kayleen John- son joining the squad. Election of Editors for the Yearbook was held with the following elected: Ellen Brown, Susan Rotellini, Rose Sergi, Ediors-in-Chief, Marsha Coombs, Art Editor, Margaret Currie, Rosemary Callahan, Business Editors, Frieda Parsons, Ray Detucci, Typing Editors, Beverley Bates, Photog- raphy Editor, Ruth Paradise, Girls Sports, and David Scott, Boys Sports. The end of the year approached, and many Juniors were honored by their selection to the Beacon Light Chapter of National Honor So- ciety. They were: Pamela Baughman, Thomas Bindas, Rosemary Callahan, Paul Conway, Mar- garet Currie, Kathleen Donovan, Peggy Grant, Dorothy Hynes, Kathleen Johnson, Rebecca Little, Carlene Messina, Judy Nyhan, Kathy O'Brien, John Re, Jannette Reader, Susan Ro- tellini, Rose Sergi, Donna Taylor, Arnold Trevett and Joanne Wilson. A project to reward our champion basketball teams was undertaken by coaches Barbara Hood and George Gracie along with their players. Operation Broadwayn will not be soon forgotten by all those who worked together to make it a truly theatrical spectacular. Last minute get-togethers were numerous in June, our final summer vacation close at hand. Summer sped by rapidly, bringing September and our Senior year. School reopened, greeting us with many changes. One of which found us again on the G-floor. But, there was a difference. Now we were seniors, rating at the top of the Totem Pole. We were sad to lose Mrs. Messer as a class advisor after all her work and devotion to our class. We will always remember her and be thankful to her. Mrs. Splaine assumed the duties of one of our class advisors, and our year got underway with the election of the following class officers: Mike McLaughlin, President, Janis Wentworth, Vice- President, Donna Taylor, Secretary, and Barbara McGinness, Treasurer. Sports headed the list of activities during the fall months. Tom Bindas and Frannie Bowie faithfully captained our football team even though they did not shine, The Held hockey team, captained by Jean Doherty, and the Cross Coun- try Team also worked hard for achievements in their fields. The National Honor Society elected Dorothy Hynes, President, Rosemary Callahan, Vice- President, Judy Nyhan, Secretary, and Peggy Grant, Treasurer to conduct their special activi- ties. The Thanksgiving Holiday was celebrated by our annual Dramatic Club show, Show Time, U.S.A. as well as our Turkey Day rally, game, and dance. Lovely MaryAnn Gambale reigned as the Christmas Queen surrounded by her attendants: Seniors, Barbara McGinness, Karen McDewel1, and Jeanettee Jette, Junior, Jolean De Pasquale, Sophomore, Peggy Heck, and Freshman, Dorothy Columbus. Basketball season has recently begun with a successful start. The boys are captained by Glenn Sennett and the girls by Ruth Paradise and Marsha Coombs. Now we look forward to the remainder of our big year. Our Senior Prom, Class Trip, and Graduation which still lie ahead will never be forgotten. As we write this, plans for them are uncertain, but we have every confidence that our determination will make them possible and the best thus far. After June - on into the future, into a world of fascination, we will always re- member the four wonderful years we spent to- gether at Billerica Memorial High School. We have tried to capture the spirit of the students and the highlights of the year, essential to fond memories. This Warrior,' is the product of days of work, and the result of combined effort from the faculty and student body Whom We sincerely wish to thank. Without their co-operation, the publication of this book would not have been possible. Above all, we wish to thank our advisors, Mrs. McNeil, Miss jahnle, and Mr. Kelley. They have incessantly given their time and effort and deserve exception- al praise for their most important contributions. Our team was dominated by underclassmen and first-year varsity seniors. These factors, coupled together, brought about a losing season. However, our boys never lost hope, and were always out there, during practice and games, giving it their best. Along with the enjoyment we got, the guidance, ability, and leadership which was bestowed upon us by Chuck Lamson, this yeafs football team was not a loss, but a total success! xv is fi - 4. 71 Hey, let's Twist! lump Ball. Kenneth Baronie, a junior, captained the team during the season. He placed tenth in the state meet out of a Held of 206 competitors. The most encouraging part is that out of 22 runners only three are graduating. r Chris McKay Dave Gladdmg George Rose 77 TRACK TEAM Including all sports, the Billerica Track Team has been, perhaps, themost successful team in the history of our school. This team has dominated the Subur- ban Track League over the last three years. We won the title twice and placed third last year. Chris McKay and Kenny Baroni are co-captains for the ensuing year. The members of the track team are, for the most part juniors, with the exception of co-captain, Chris McKay, George Rose, Iim DeMarino, and Tom Witham.
