ADMINISTRATION Dr. Robert G. Witten Superintendent of Schools “DO NOT FOLLOW WHERE THE PATH MAY LEAD GO INSTEAD WHERE THERE IS NO PATH AND LEAVE A TRAIL is the theme chosen by the Class of 86 for their MIRROR The preparatory years have provided each student in the senior class with the opportunity to explore, to learn, and to develop leadership skills which they will need in order to venture where others have not been Leadership comes in many coats It is not just the President of the United States and the corporate board chairman, but the everyday worker who can and should demonstrate his leadership skills. To do this, it lakes some unique characteristics of the individual For instance, a leader needs to be a risk laker — one who is willing to try new methods or ideas where the possibility of failure could occur Many believe that failure at something is the end of the world and that it should be avoided rather than to make the attempt Author John W Gardner in his writing. NO EASY VICTORIES, stated “One of the reasons mature people stop learning a that they become less and less willing to risk failure “ Failure can be instructive The person who really thinks, learns quite as much from his failures as from his successes The only people who never fail arc those who never try Willingness to try and try again is characteristic of the leader and of the winner This in turn takes belief in one's self It takes courage to face the uncertainty of success or failure It takes courage to believe in yourself so strongly that others will also believe in you as a leader and in what you want to accomplish Those who have the courage to try and to solve new problems of life arc the ones who raise society to greatness Those who merely live according to the standards do not advance society, but only carry it along Carrying society along a bo has its importance in maintaining stability, but to continue to reach out for the betterment of mankind is critical for growth and progress Reaching out takes vision, being able to sec what others are unable to see. It's true that people see things very much in terms of what others have seen It's simply a question of the originality of a person's vision All can see the Picasso, but not all can sec new designs of art. Leadership is situational, but there arc five basic rules that all should remember They arc: 1. Always give people the credit that is rightfully theirs Todo otherwise is both morally and ethically dishonest 2. Be courteous Have genuine consideration for other people s feelings, wishes and situations. J. Never tamper with the truth Never rationalize What you might like to believe n not necessarily the truth 4 Be concise in your wnting and talking, especially when giving instructions to others 5. Be generous Remember, it is the productivity of others that makes possible your leadership position CLASS OF 1986 in simplest terms, be one who knows where you want to go in life Get up and go Best of luck to you in pursuing your dreams, your desires, and your future. TO EVERYONE A CHANCE. REGARDLESS OF BIRTH. A GOLDEN OPPORTUNI- TY. THE RIGHT TO LIVE. TO WORK. TO BE ONESELF THIS IS THE PROMISE OF AMERICA % 2 Blazing a trail for others to follow is of little value if others do not “follow.” Often as individuals mature and begin to climb the lad- der of success or as he she strives to attain a goal, they find themselves alone. The “way” must justify the “means” because what good is a new path without “new followers”? Let each one keep in mind the equal importance placed upon achieving our own goals and helping others to achieve theirs. Going where there is no path takes courage and perseverance while leaving a trail takes caution and concern for others. Follow- ing someone else’s pathway is not wrong if your desire to achieve is marked with your own creativity. How wrong can it be to follow the pathway of the great men in our nations history? On the other hand, it is not wrong to desire to be an example. The important thing to remember is that whether following a pathway or blazing a trail we remain sensitive to the people who will follow us. In doing that we will be individuals with not only a purpose but a plan for life; so that whatever we desire will be balanced with the maturity necessary in accepting responsibility for others. This will make our endeavors a pleasant journey and our destination a community reward. Mr. Kenneth M. Cassell Jr. High School Principal Dare to be different. Dare to glimpse the beautiful picture of life and choose a different path. Do not follow the crowds; look careful- ly at each pathway before choosing. Prepare yourself with learn- ing, compassion for your fellowman, honesty, and self confidence; then make a choice. With confidence in your own worth, choose a path of challenge. Select a way that will help you grow and achieve your goals of life. Meet each path of life as a new beginning, learning from the past, growing, maturing, and making the path of life a better place for those who will follow you. “I shall pass through this world but once. If, therefore, there be any kindness I can do, let me do it now; let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” Etienne DeGrellet Mr. Richard Boyce Assistant High School Principal Athletic Director School Board: Row 1: Hobart Benchoff, Barbara Garretson, Lucy Lott, Gene Motter, Row 2: Helen Rex, O. As the threat of nuclear war and the threat of acid rain continue to plague our lives, we also find ourselves bombarded with dangers from all sides. Air tragedies claimed the lives of some of America’s newest heroes and heroines. Child peacemaker Samantha Smith lost her life in a tragic commuter flight crash. In December. 248 American servicemen, who were returning from a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, lost their lives in a plane crash in Gander, Newfoundland. Perhaps the most devastating tragedy came on the cold morning in January as millions witnessed the space shuttle Challenger explode into a fiery ball, killing the astronauts and the first teacher in space, Christa McAullife. Consumers had to be on the lookout once again as cya- nide in Tylenol capsules claimed two lives. This was quick- ly followed by another scare as an extortionist claimed to have tampered with Contac capsules and other over the counter medicines in capsule form. Consumers also had a scare from glass found in jars of Gerber baby food. Terrorists continued the increasing reign of power as they hijacked a cruise ship, the Achille Lauro, and killed a helpless American passenger who was confined to a wheel- chair. Airliners were hijacked, hostages were taken and attacks on world leaders were still prevalent. The prime minister of Sweden, Olaf Palme, fell to an assassin’s bul- let. Perhaps the biggest fear sweeping the country came from the disease Aids. Americans became more aware of its threat as a major motion picture star. Rock Hudson, lost his life in a battle with the incurable, mysterious disease. What was once thought to be a killer only in the gay community, began claiming other victims through contaminated blood transfusions. Panic among communi- ties spread nationwide as we found students entering the public schools with the disease. While it has been a time of fear, it has also been one of hope. The Geneva Summit brought alive new hopes for peace and agreement between the Soviet Union and our country. In the Phillipines, Ferdinand Marcos and his corrupt government was replaced by the rebel leader Cor- azon Aquino. Perhaps the biggest source of hope came from the music world. Performers world-wide rallied for worthy causes. Band Aid, USA for Africa, Live Aid and other benefits were organized to aid starving children in drought strick- en Ethiopia and other parts of the world. Our nation’s struggling farmers were given a hand by Willie Nelson and others in the Farm Aid concert. Efforts continued from these organizations such as USA for Africa’s effort to link hands across America to feed the hungry. On a lighter side, the sports world had the usual ups and downs. In baseball, Pete Rose became the all-time hit leader. In what was dubbed the ’’1-70” World Series, the Kansas City Royals defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games. Headbands and the Refrigerator became all the rage in football as the Chicago Bears won big in Super Bowl XX. Almost every sport was marred by athletes’ involvement in drugs. The United States prepared to celebrate the 100th anni- versary of the Statue of Liberty by giving the lady a much needed face lift. In this same time as we are celebrating Lady Liberty, we arc also celebrating the first national holiday ever honoring a black man. January 20, Martin Luther King's birthday, has officially become our most recent national holiday. As always we have enjoyed being entertained by the movie and television industries. Among the top movies this year have been Beverly Hills Cop. Rambo. Back to the Future. Rocky IV. The Color Purple. Out of Africa, and Down and Out in Beverly Hills. The hottest shows on television include The Cosby Show and Miami Vice. Fads, present now as ever, involved all areas. Stirrup pants and Reebocks were a must for clothing. Watches were exchanged for Swatches and Dr. Ruth gave out lots of advice. Jams were very hot in the hot weather especially as students celebrated a “miracle of being allowed to wear shorts to school in the sweltering early days of this school year. 59 A m__ .
