ADMINISTRATION ON THE RISE IN '85 is the theme selected by the class of '85 for their Mirror. The challenge placed before the Upper Adams Schools is to prepare each student for post-secondary school life . . . whether that be continuing their education, entering the armed forces, enter- ing the work world, or being a homemaker. The district has identified and adopted twelve goals as their main thrust for educating each student in preparing them for the adult world. These goals that the district believes will best prepare each student are: help each student — acquire communication skills of understanding, speaking, reading and writing — acquire skills in mathematics — develop self-understanding and a feeling of self-worth — develop analytical thinking skills — acquire knowledge of different cultures and an expression of the worth of all people — learn the history of the nation, understand its systems of govern- ment and economics and acquire the values and attitudes neces- sary for responsible citizenship — acquire knowledge, appreciation and skills in the arts and human- ities — acquire knowledge, understanding and appreciation of science and technology — acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to become a self-supporting member of society — acquire the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for successful personal and family living — acquire the knowledge and develop practices necessary to main- tain physical and emotional well-being — acquire knowledge and develop practices necessary to maintain the quality of life in a balanced environment. With these goals firmly in mind and well integrated into the curricu- lum, every student who passes through the Upper Adams schools has been given the tools for success and control of their lives. A poem by an anonymous author possibly sums up what each will do with their tools. Isn't it strange that princes and kings And clowns that caper in sawdust rings And common folk like you and me Are builders for eternity! To each has been given a bag of tools A shapeless mass, and a book of rules And each must make before life has flown A stumbling block or a stepping stone.
