Biglerville High School Biglerville, PA 17307 THE 1985 MIRROR PRESENTS ON THE RISE IN '85 TABLE OF CONTENTS Fabulous Faculty 12 Crazy Clubs 24 Amazing Activites 44 Super Sports 60 Unique Underclassmen 108 Sensational Seniors 132 ADMINISTRATION ON THE RISE IN '85 is the theme selected by the class of '85 for their Mirror. The challenge placed before the Upper Adams Schools is to prepare each student for post-secondary school life . . . whether that be continuing their education, entering the armed forces, enter- ing the work world, or being a homemaker. The district has identified and adopted twelve goals as their main thrust for educating each student in preparing them for the adult world. These goals that the district believes will best prepare each student are: help each student — acquire communication skills of understanding, speaking, reading and writing — acquire skills in mathematics — develop self-understanding and a feeling of self-worth — develop analytical thinking skills — acquire knowledge of different cultures and an expression of the worth of all people — learn the history of the nation, understand its systems of govern- ment and economics and acquire the values and attitudes neces- sary for responsible citizenship — acquire knowledge, appreciation and skills in the arts and human- ities — acquire knowledge, understanding and appreciation of science and technology — acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to become a self-supporting member of society — acquire the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for successful personal and family living — acquire the knowledge and develop practices necessary to main- tain physical and emotional well-being — acquire knowledge and develop practices necessary to maintain the quality of life in a balanced environment. With these goals firmly in mind and well integrated into the curricu- lum, every student who passes through the Upper Adams schools has been given the tools for success and control of their lives. A poem by an anonymous author possibly sums up what each will do with their tools. Isn't it strange that princes and kings And clowns that caper in sawdust rings And common folk like you and me Are builders for eternity! To each has been given a bag of tools A shapeless mass, and a book of rules And each must make before life has flown A stumbling block or a stepping stone. Seniors ... it will now be your choice for the future! Dr. Robert G. Witten Superintendent of Schools au%cjjt rj 3 Mr. Kenneth M. Cassell, Jr. High School Principal As we look ahead to the future of our students, we cannot successfully set our goals until we examine our past. One of the greatest assets we experience in life is the ability to see our mistakes, correct what we can, and press on. No day starts better than the one that begins with the thought: “Today is the day I will begin ' Tomorrow is the hour of hope, yesterday is the hour of experience, but, today, is the hour of beginning. With these thoughts tucked inside of our consciousness, we can face each day with the feeling of facing new challenges that no one before us has had to face. We can see our uniqueness in the 1980's as never before. Here in this decade, we have seen the introduction of computers into our learning experiences that can reach unlimited heights, and, with the space-age satellites, we can communicate with other areas of our world as never before. Who, in our nation's historical past would have believed that all this technology would become reality in just two centuries? With these thoughts in mind, we can examine our past as individuals, also, and commit ourselves to a better future. We can, and must, remember that now is when dreams are realized and now is where our future is formed. Let us all have the insight it takes within us, and the commitment to ourselves, our students, our teachers, our families and our community to truly say: “We are on the rise in '85! Larry Kennedy, Richard G. Boyce, Gayle Griffie, Dr. Robert Witten, Helen D. Rex, Kenneth M. Cassell, Jr., Ronald Ebbert 4 Mr. Richard Boyce Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Are you willing to work hard to find room at the top? Too often we want to start at the top and are not willing to work up to that loftier position from the so-called bottom of the ladder. Some of us are too “proud to accept a lesser step that would eventually lead to the higher paying and more prestigious level. Very few of us ever take advantage or utilize but a small portion of the God-given talents and abilities with which we were born. What a terrible waste that can never be redeemed! If we are not ready to make a commitment, we can find many excuses and alibies to justify our existence in life! What we fail to realize is that if we make a commitment in our life's work there will be room at the top for any and all who strive for this quality of excellence. A Note From The Editors We, the editors of the 1985 Mirror would like to thank all the members of the staff for their participation and cooperation. Although we had a late start and were faced with many conflicts, we stuck together and got the job done. We offer our special thanks to Al Oussoren, our Herff-Jones representative, Larry Kinneman, our photogra- pher from Ziegler Studio, Mr. Frey, and Miss Mulligan, our advisor who struggled with us from the beginning and for all her very hard work. Most of all however, we, the editors, would like to show our special thanks to those staff members who were dedicated enough to miss their Saturday cartoons. We hope that the 1985 Mirror has captured the special moments of the '84-85 school year that you will always remember. 3l t dtrdj 4Uma K Biglerville High School we are bringing Our gifts of homage due.
